    1. Man coached on one leg after having his toes amputated.
    2. He donated part of his salary and collaborated with Walmart to get them a new stadium. (They previously had to play on local HS fields some games because their field was so bad)
    3. He leveraged his relationship with Under Armour and now JSU has as many uniform variants as any team not named Oregon.
    4. His son de-committed from FAU to play at JSU.
    5. He got Travis Hunter, who was a top 2 recruit, to choose JSU over FSU (Deion's Alma mater btw). Travis Hunter and Shadeur are likely going to Colorado.
    6. He's the first coach to go straight from a HBCU job to a power 5 gig.
    7. He coached their first undefeated season.

If WE don’t continue to show the same exact energy to JSU and HBCUs in general after Primes departure that’s on US not him! He laid EXCELLENT foundation! Don’t stop telling your kids to go to HBCUs! Make donations go to the games! Because if we were doing it long before he got there he wouldn’t have thought about leaving to make 25 times his current contract because JSU or another HBCU could’ve attempted to match it or at least get close!

Nothing he did was sustainable. ESPN isnt coming back
The top players just left and the ones who were coming next year just said they are going to Colorado. He left before the job was done on a way it can last. This whole JSU thing was self serving NOT for the culture. He COULDN'T get a job at a PWI, they had just passed him over for three jobs before JSU took a chance on him. One of the reasons he couldn't get a job was because he didnt have a college degree and guess who fast tracked his college credits? The HBCU! He claimed to want to help Blsck kids then went to a school with 2 percent black students. NO ONE thought he would be there for a decade, they did expect him to be around for a full recruiting cycle and see at least ONE kid graduate. Also the bigger institutions saw the HBCU schools taking "their " talent so what did the do? They took the biggest influence of that switch and removed it by doing what they always do..give him a job and some "status". Its so many layers than just oh he wanted to get a new job Coaching.

I think the argument is more about the realization that with resources HBCUs can clearly be included in the conversation with the best of them. As we are consistently and intentionally underfunded, the idea that attendance (in all cases) across HBCUs was growing exponentially wasn't accepted well amongst larger institutions. I don't believe anyone thought he would stay forever, we just want to make sure this isn't just a trend. He absolutely went above and beyond, but let's just keep that same energy and keep our HBCUs growing and flourishing!

Yes, Deion shined a light on HBCUs! The issue for most is the disconnect in the messaging- his message was HBCU schools can at some point become competitive programs if top athletes and people of color support the schools. The best talent should come to HBCUs …..
Now he is leaving the HBCU and taking the top talent he recruited with him.

So while everybody's jumping on the "I'm not hatin", "oh I support Deion" bandwagon I'm just gone be honest. I understand why some black people feel a way. As some one who attended an HBCU our institutions are viewed as 2nd tier and we don't have/get as many resources as PWIs. So when Deion entered the HBCU circle and brought attention that I've never seen in my life time we were thrilled! The future looked promising. Maybe other retired athletes would seek coaching jobs at HBCUs ...maybe other HBCUs would be able to recruit 5 and 4a athletes ...therefore providing revenue for our own institutions... building up our own schools. ..and then this happens. I think theres disappointment for what couldve been. No body was expecting him to stay forever but it still feels like the beginning and we're disappointed. I think black people feel like we get used to build/form something and then when something comes along that's "better" it's peice out ✌🏾. I don't think all the attention/coverage will continue now that he's gone. Proud of him because I know he'll do well but what about HBCUs. Just being honest

They sell out every games like 80k to 100k. Only time we may sell out a stadium is homecoming and the classics. Just saying. Instead of getting upset and complaining how about getting together to support our schools. I was in the band for a school in the SWAC have donated to the band because I understand the struggles but honestly never thought about the athletics side.

For me it's a wait and see on the Sanders move: of course he's his own man and he can do what he wants when he wants.
However, him moving on isn't as simple as if Kevin got a big movie role and had to step away. It's more akin to if Kevin, after pitching his dream "for us" to Stage Krew and getting community investment recruting all of this new to believe in this dream; recruiting talent to KevonStage Studios based on what he can do with his personal power, influence, and access; those ppl had to sign commitments to the studio/LLC that may not be severable; and then Kevin announces that he and his top team (e.g., Kev, Josh, Melissa, head of production, etc) are pulling out of KevonStage studios. The company remains, but with a lot less juice and safety net to grow.
It's more akin to if a showrunner or executive producer and her core team role out from a smaller network (after hyping up ppl with less $$/access to bet on them), then hops to NBC/Peacock or Sony. It's of course great for him, and could open up doors for a few others, but it would be false to pretend that his leaving will not materially hurt Jackson State University (community, athletic dept, individual student athletes that he promised grammamma he'd take care of).

    - During the trophy presentation He literally snatches Tracy his girlfriend as she is hugging someone ( there is Tik Tok video) and he is yelling Let’s go! Let’s hurry up.
    - yea he did have a talk to HIS players after the game with cameras rolling 👀
    - WE simply wanted the players a to have their recognition but he made the moment all about him!
    - YES coach’s leave abruptly all the time. This Deion PRIMETIME Sanders, IF he wanted to, he could have told CO, let my players have Saturday, I’ll be in CO 1st thing Sunday. What was pertinent about him flying out that night immediately after a championship?!🤷🏽‍♀️
    - Us MS folks simply wanted to send him out better than how Saturday went down & we weren’t given that opportunity. period!

    - We truly wish him the best and hope he open doors for other Black Coaches.

My question is what were the Jackson State Alumni doing before Coach Prime showed up??? Did any of the Alumni care about the status of their football facilities??? Did any of the Alumni pull money together to make sure the staff was paid better?? It feels as if the Alumni showed up when it was convenient and looked around and said "Oh well. It's an HBCU, this is the way it's supposed to be." Then you have someone come in, not from an HBCU, and say "We can do better." and he made it happen with his own salary. So it seems like the indictment is on the Alumni for not uplifting the program.
You can't say he left dirty when the man showed up renovated the house. Added 2 bedrooms with an extended patio, cultivated the lawn and up'd the value of your home 200k. He left it better than when he first got there. Sounds like folks just don't want to take responsibility for their lack of responsibility. It hurts when someone shows you the problem by turning the mirror around and you see yourself. It hard to admit it.

There have been plenty of legendary coaches with winning records at HBCUs that never made it to a power 5 school let alone head coaching role in the FBS. Coach Prime God given talents are making room for him to continue to elevate. He’s been coaching at lower levels before JSU. He could have applied to be a position coach at a power 5 school (and made more money) and never came to JSU.

As an HBCU grad, I don't think he is a sellout. However, I think there is disappointment in the HBCU community about when and how he left. I think most HBCU supporters knew that he was not going to be there forever, however, his "rhetoric" made most hopeful that his efforts were more of a MOVEMENT rather than a MOMENT for him. Especially, since he talked so much about how this was a mission for him and it was bigger than money. I would have appreciated if he would've at least stayed for his entire contract and saw at least one recruitment class through. He was only there for 2 calendar years (Dec 2020 - Dec 2022) which I don't think is long enough for sustainable change. He promoted that top recruits could come to HBCUs and still get into the NFL - but he didn't stay long enough to show them that it can be done. His top recruits will now go with him to Colorado.
It was also disappointing how he left. The JSU players didn't have any opportunity to celebrate their championship win and their historic season. Immediately after the game they had to have a team meeting to discuss his departure and Deion was immediately on a plane to Colorado. Now the team can't even focus on their upcoming bowl game because all the talk is about Deion leaving and who is going to the portal to be with him.
However, I do believe that these 2 years were mutually beneficial for both parties. Two things can be true at the same time - we can appreciate what Deion did while he was at JSU and still be disappointed that he is leaving. I wish Deion well at his new school, and I wish JSU well as they try to continue to build on the exposure that they received during his tenure.

The students can’t just up and leave without penalty so if a degree is four years, and being coached by Deion was the promotion for making the decision, then Deion should also have the same commitment. However, he should have really said I won’t be here forever but I will stay for the four years it should take you to get your degree from this date to this date. You might not care for Colorado, but because Deion is now the head coach, he can help players specifically from Colorado get ready for the league. Whereas before, the players that wanted to play under him at JSU weren't getting as much recognition because it was at an hbcu, so the level of competition wasn't there. Now players that he recruits and the players that he will bring with him has the potential to get NFL attention because they would now be playing at a larger Major D1 school. Now to address the criticism of white coaches, they are criticized for losing, but they are hated by the fans for leaving the school to coach somewhere different. There's a huge distinction between being hated by the fans for coaching at a rival school and having your character called into question for leaving a school. The question of the past week and the title of the video has to do with Deion being a sellout. This is a personal character attack, which is worlds different than being criticized for losing or even hated for taking a position at a rival school.

And no Coach actually gets mad when a player graduates! They may tease but they know they will be doing better and bigger things.
And Kev the Lord may have told him to go there and now the lord has told him “Well done, your work is done here”. So just because he left doesn’t mean the lord didn’t send him. C’Mon Kev

It's unfortunate that people are calling Coach Prime a sellout. People leave jobs all the time for more money. They are upset because their feelings are hurt because of their expectations for him. I don't like the way he handled the situation. He could have allowed the team to enjoy their SWAC Championship & not make it about him. He could have easily waited until after the ATL game. Yes, I'm a Jackson resident & a JSU Alumni. JSU & HBCUs were relevant in our community before him & will be relevant after him. Yes he gave us more national exposure, but we will be alright! I still wish him well even though I'm disappointed in the way he did things. But he's just being Prime Time (it's always been about him). So let's keep it moving.

Last point: WE was #THEE before he came & will continue to be #THEE!
Both the school & Prime benefited from this 3yr relationship. Prior to 2020 No school was checking for him as a coach. He was coaching high school. No other school would give him a head coach job. Likewise JSU got more exposure, sponsors etc. and we are grateful! Again we just in our feelings, not mad , not hating, because of how he chose to leave. It could have been handled better.

As a recent JSU alum, I feel like I've heard every angle of this conversation 😂. But for real though, he sold the players and fans a dream. Deion did a lot for JSU FOOTBALL and HBCU FOOTBALL; that was the extent of what he did for JSU and I think most people appreciate him for that. I don't believe he was ever invested in HBCU's and what they stand for... he cared about football and becoming a coach. People have a right to be upset. What I don't like is snide comments being made about JSU, Jackson, and HBCU's in general. And Deion has made several of these comments since coming to Jackson State but people chose to ignore it. With that being said, I don't think he's a sellout. He's a millionaire. The rich get richer. He did what he had to do to get to where he wanted to be.

  • @jae6506

My opinion is that Deion should’ve stayed or went to another HBCU. Let’s be clear tho, anyone who knows a teensy bit about Primetime knows that he will always put himself before all else. All that talk about Black Pride and support of HBCUs might have been his real feelings; but he did it with a calculated agenda for him not the community. He has the extremely unique luxury to not just be a Black coach (which isn’t the norm) but to be an already wealthy Black coach. Most ppl make career moves based on necessity and the financial betterment of their family. A rich person making a move to only get richer just doesn’t do it for me. His positive impact at JSU is undeniable but make no mistake his absence will have a negative impact. All he showed PWIs is that as long as the check is fat enough, they can keep HBCUs under their thumb. Talent goes where the coaching staff is best…PERIOD. Ppl buy tickets more so to see good talent than to support their team. Sooo, when the talent leaves, the money leaves with it. The only way this changes is if someone like Deion carries out the mission he started. I won’t say Deion is a sellout bcuz it’s his life to do as he chooses. What I will say is he helped HBCUs win a few battles; but he could’ve helped them win “the war”. Who knows, maybe one day he might just finish what he started🤷🏽‍♀️
    Wow, this comment is longggg😆

Hey, former HBCU athlete here……..Y’all are missing the point with Deion Sanders……they all lie…….here is the difference, when Nick Saban comes and sits in my living and talks to me/my kid, we know what it is, this is a mutual partnership between two entities, I provide wins for you and I get to possibly play at the next level, I know you don’t really care about me no matter what you say…..but when a black man sits and sells you a dream, it hit different, you tend to pull the heart strings mor but YET AGAIN the point is missed because no one is actually for the betterment of black people today……this is about marketing, building a brand, and getting a bag…….it’s on you if you believe the sales pitch, stop thing everyone has good intentions, and stop using black people as a stepping stone…….ain’t nobody mad about him leaving, they mad that he came and sold a dream, HE made HIMSELF a martyr, nobody asked this man to be a savior HE DID THAT, y’all don’t realize that all these stuff that was done for that HBCU was don’t through relationships that HE had and when he leaves ALL THAT SHIT LEAVES WITH HIM, that means no more sponsorships, no more TV time slots, no more Michael Strahan, it’s back to the abyss that they think we are, black people been fighting for shit for 400 years and y’all talking about a impact he had in 3 years????, GTFOH…….but yet again, black people cant see the bigger picture, white man don’t even really mess with us that much now, we imploding at this point, and y’all making jokes about it shows why we don’t enjoy success together as a community anymore……..but s/o to Miles College, my HBCU, golden bears milean all love

But after hearing more of the entire story, I was disappointed (as a HBCU grad) but in my real ADULT world, the same choices wouldve been made. .

I thought he would at least stay long enough to graduate his biological kids and his recruits from JSU before moving on to a PWI. We knew he was leaving at some point but I thought he would stay a little longer. As an HBCU grad (Howard, C/O 2005) I do believe that this may hurt the possibility of top recruits going to HBCUs as kids are easily influenced so with Deion going to Colorado, top recruits will surely re-evaluate going to HBCUs where they will not receive the same attention.

When I heard about Dion's decision my thoughts went to the trauma this may reinforce in the players. These players are all AA and they looked at Dion as a father figure (not saying they are all fatherless but...). Dion stepped into the position of a bonus dad and left when it was beneficial to him. If any of those young men grew up w/o a dad...they experienced the loss of a father figure all over again.
Dion convinced some of those young men to forgo going to a PWI, only to turn around and do the same thing... for money. I understand the business move but once again this goes to show why our community is so detached from one another. Because the 'others' know all they have to do is dangle money and our 'leaders' will switch their positions.
