The story I've always heard re: Eccleson leaving is: "the main issue he had on DW, one of the S1 directors (Keith Boak) treated people like sh*t, Chris confronted him, and later got into a fight with Phil Collinson over it because he thought Phil was brushing it under the carpet." Eccleston's always been unable to stand by while crew were maltreated, and to me, his concern makes his one year even more *fantastic*. Google CE and KB (with full names.) Also, CE wasn't fond of the Slitheen. I agree.

It always surprised me that Joe Ahearne never worked on the show after Series One, given he directed several of the best episodes.

Watching this in 2020, Phil Collinson sounds like he’s giving the typical textbook producer response about Eccleston leaving. I loved Eccleston as The Doctor and its a shame he left when he did but I doubt he was contracted for one. Also Collinson makes it sound like Eccleston only thought of his ‘ego’.

Yeah I was 8 too, I had no idea what regeneration was and just stumbled on Doctor Who with Rose and was hooked. The regeneration completely floored me and my 8 yr old mind was blown. :)

Astonishing dodging at the end by PC there, completely swerved the question!

Perhaps I'm naive enough to take what Eccleston himself has said over and over at face value: He was only ever interested in doing one series. RTD and the BBC knew that from the very start. That's the contract he signed.

A segment of it is but in its description there's a link to the full (20 minute) panel :)

The quote comes from one of the first three Google results, a site called DataLounge. But the first three tell the same story. The post goes on to say that Keith Boak wasn't invited back into the Whoniverse, which speaks volumes. (But even though he did the Slitheen episodes, he *did* direct "Rose", so props for that.) But as someone who works in TV and having seen that kind of rudeness, my hat's off to Chris for taking a principled stand, and being a marvelous Nine.

In the end, if you don't believe the million-and-one times Eccleston himself has said he was only ever interested in doing one series, what could Collinson have said to change your mind?

Why was Bruno Langhley there? He’s not in these episodes.

I think the internet is less at fault and more of people in the know needing to keep secrecy, as was said before. I recall that even in the 1980s, JNT suspect someone was leaking out info and used false titles like "The Doctor's Wife."

I consider your opinion incorrect, but I respect you for having it. Personally I think Moffat's "All explosions and sex all the time" is just as annoying as you found series one.

Whatever the faults of the moffat era, he did at least cast an actor capable of portraying an ancient time travelling alien;Matt is the most charismatic actor in the role since Tom Baker and I expect Peter Capaldi will also be captivating;Eccleston was awkward & unconvincing;he couldn't get a handle on the role and he no longer wants to be associated with the series which speaks volumes about his "integrity"
