- Steven Moffat interview at the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration Weekend on filming in the US, whether he'd like to see a Doctor Who spin-off series for Paul McGann, keeping Paul McGann's Night of the Doctor a surprise and what he thinks Peter Capaldi will bring to the role of the new doctor. Steven Moffat also responds to claims that the classic doctors won't be in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, and says we can't belive anything he's been saying! Steven Moffat says he wants to surprise us the same way we were about Paul McGann's mini episode The Night of The Doctor.

I liked this interview. Especially what Moffat says about being surprised by Doctor Who. After Doctor Who and Sherlock, so few tv shows give me the giddiness of being surprised.
People criticize Moffat for all sorts. But when you see his utter passion and love for the show it's really hard to see why. Love him.
Let's all hope Moffat decides to do a Children In Need-type special like Time Crash where he gets the Eighth Doctor to cross paths with Capaldi's Doctor.

Would be nice if ***** would include do a captioned overlay for every of the questions asked, as the audio levels of the questions is significantly lower than that of Moffat's answers. Would make it easier to follow the interview.

Cryer24597 The "quiet scenes" argument isn't really bad influence. RTD as a writer was just average and his episodes were full of blank moments which he used to fill with those dialogues. Moffat himself did that with Miss Evangelista, except that was functional to the incoming death of the character. Plus, it made sense since the Library two-parter was really plot-heavy, whereas The End of the World had barely any plot at all.
Pause at 0:07, the guy on the left behind Steven, he looks like a young Patrick Troughton. It's a reincarnation of the Second Doctor.

Ha, Moffat basically disses how Captain Jack was brought back a decade before it happens.
"I'm back! Now what?"
It's funny because during the time they cancelled Doctor Who it had started to produce better stories.
When Eccleston refused to reprise his role as the 9th Doctor in the Time War, Steven Moffat still had the option of honoring the 8th Doctor with the part.
Two good reasons:
1- We had seen very little of the 8th Doctor: only one full-length episode.
2- The 8th Doctor was originally supposed to have a central part in the Time War, which cost his life and led to the 9th Doctor. This was clearly implied when the new series began in 2005.
Instead Moffat kept Paul McGann out of the 2013 movie by adding yet another incarnation between the 8th and 9th, an inherently confusing element that will haunt fans for generations to come.
I appreciate Moffat’s storytelling abilities, but as the leader of the show, he has caused unnecessary division and heartache among fans. I’d like to see a head writer who has more respect for the classic series and recognizes the two series as a whole.
i think he summed up the reason why not here, too excited at the idea of an unknown doctor not to do. i've mixed feelings on the matter myself
It was fan speculation that unfolded the 8th Doctor was involved. In the end he was involved. I do prefer the 'War' Doctor over the Ninth Doctor fighting the war. It was obvious he regenerated prior to the episode Rose, but how long he was involved in the Time War was left correctly vague. It was to have not everything explained away that gave it such potency. I loved that.
Look at the Star Wars prequel trilogy, it does rob some of the mystery of the characters. They're great films but explaining everything away took a bit of the character these characters had built up.
Now that's George Lucas's prerogative, and it's valid, but explaining everything away can stifle a lot of the viewer or readers enjoyment.
Such as is the new Doctor nice or not. I don't know yet, do I want to know yet? Yes... and No.
What matters is he IS the Doctor. That's what's exciting.

Watching this interview after finishing series 8 is very interesting, Stephen's basically dropping hints here and there all over the second half of this interview. We get the broom metaphor and of course the Paternoster gang in Deep Breath, and 12's dislike for soldiers throughout S8. I wonder if there's more I didn't pick up.
Also quite alarming he basically predicted the way Jack Harkness was brought back in 13's tenure (basically the "I'm back" moment and nothing else).
Would newly discovered 2nd Doctor episodes distract from the current series? An 8th Doctor mini series would serve a similar purpose in restoring something that was lost. We have a popular Doctor with only one full-length episode. We barely got to meet him.
We have 8th Doctor stories as audio dramas, featuring companions that we have not seen in live-action. Let’s SEE a selection of these stories adapted to video and released after the regular season as webisodes and direct to DVD. I’ve heard fans talk about the wait between seasons; here’s a win-win.
The problem itself is a distraction. The new series skipped the 8th Doctor and created a void that begs to be filled. Here’s an opportunity to find a common ground solution and restore harmony to the series as a whole.
