  • Rare, never seen before, vintage commercials are seen in this special program featuring the cast of Bewitched doing commercials for everything from Cereal, cars, syrup, cameras and hairspray. Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York, Alice Pearce, George Tobias, Agnes Moorehead, and others use their Bewitching characters to become pitchmen and pitch-women to even sell dog food! At times bizarre, at times endearing, these prices clips take us back to a time when Madison Avenue and Hollywood teamed up to sell us their products.

    Great job. All the commercial in one place. 👍
    P.S.: Look for other commercials and PSAs that Liz did. One commercial she did was for US Savings Bonds in the late 60s, I think. In the early 80s, Liz went to Japan and did commercials for a Japanese cookie company., which I understand she enjoyed.
    Liz also produced and voiced PSAs (Public Service Announcements). One was for the American Lung Association. and another for an organization that she worked with that produced audio books for visually impaired people. There's a vidieo of the book while Liz is reading it. I believe that organization is still around.
    Here's the link to her reading the book.

    These are all truly entertaining. Question: does anybody remember (or have access to) commercials that Marion Lorne did for Oxydol detergent c. 1967? They are not on RUclips, and they seem not to reside anywhere on the Internet, but they did exist, and they must be out there somewhere. Just wondering whether anybody has a lead on those 🙂

    Bewitched, with its product placements and ads for Chevrolet and so on, was about aspiration as much as it was about integration or acceptance. This is often forgotten. We all “aspired” to be like Samantha, to also dress like her and to also have access to the “modern” products which her husband Darrin and his boss Larry Tate sell to clients throughout the tenure of the show. It is also about the aspiration that comes with being clever and creative, whether through witchcraft or through human ingenuity. You will often see Samantha come up with an advertising copy line and save the day for Darrin, sometimes by her own merit. Samantha was also aspirational and wanted to play in the human space. Everyone in the show is “aspiring” or reaching for the marble constantly. Outdoing one another socially or outdoing one another via magic. It’s a show as much about middle class aspiration as it is about middle class morals and mores.

      She was a tv version of Grace Kelly in many ways. Often what studios used to do is cast “lesser” stars in roles that could be done by the big movie stars of time but wouldn’t (as stars if Grace Kelly’s caliber would never do TV series as it was beneath them) - so Liz was cast as a kind of TV Grace Kelly. Even her fashions and wavy blonde glam 50s hairstyles are similar. They also styled Liz very much on Veronica Lake in “I married a witch) from 1942. Even the hair is the same. The Veronica Lake stylistic references are hard to miss for tv and film aficionados.

    Why would they show dog food being cooked? Who cooks canned dog food?! Plus it wasn't very logical, since she was in character as Samantha and as far as I know Samantha and Darren never had a dog, except for maybe when somebody was turned unto a dog by Endora. The commercial with Gladys Kravitz is the only time I have seen her not obsessing over something that Samantha did using witchcraft. There were other TV shows in the 1950s & '60s where the actors did commercials for the products that sponsored their show, like Andy Griffith, The Flintstones, I Love Lucy and Burns & Allen. My guess it was probably in the actor's contract that they do these commercials. The Bonanza-Man From Uncle-Bewitched mash-up was probably an industrial promotional short made by Chevrolet that would have been shown at retail conventions since it was too long to be a TV ad and those shows were on different networks, Bonanza & Uncle were on NBC, Bewitched was on ABC. I can't imagine that either network would want to show an ad that featured actors from a rival network.

      Chevrolet had several new car introductions that ran on "Bonanza." There were commercials that featured the cast of My Three Sons...interesting that Martin Milner and George Maharis never appeared in those commercials...

    We have coffee mate here in the UK.. When I was a kid... Coffee was hardly drank here it was Tea all the way... My mother who only died just 3 months ago aged 92 never drank coffee in her life only tea... But things have turned around now in the UK.. Over the last 30 years or so coffee is the favoured drink.. I have only 1 friend that drinks tea the rest coffee and same with family. 1 sister drinks only tea the rest coffee.. I myself mostly drink coffee but occasionally I'll have a cup of tea.. But it's been a good many years since I had coffeemate but it's been around in the UK since I was a kid .

    • @lapislazuli7876
      @lapislazuli7876 8 месяцев назад

      Yes it was the same in Australia. It’s a British thing: We all drank tea back then and would be fascinated by how American stars on Shows like Bewitched always drank percolated or drip coffee from those machines in their kitchens. Now everyone drinks coffee everywhere.

    "Low quality, grainy?"" Network and ad agency standards were state of the art even in the "assumed" primitive analogue NTSC television standard. You cannot judge or rate image quality based on what are 16mm dupe prints that have circulated among collectors. Even legitimate 16mm prints were of high quality. The original network standard which went over the network feed was 35mm, the theatrical movie standard, with 16mm back ups in interlock in case of equipment failure. Anyone who has seen a movie will agree that the images on 35mm were definitely NOT low quality or grainy. Picture and sound quality were up to the standards of the day. So for the record, we need to put this information into proper context and representation. These looked far better than this in their original presentations. Take it from someone who saw them when they were first broadcast.
