(in my opinion) The care amendment is band-aid measure to absolve the government's responsibility to financial and legally support carers in Ireland. A government which don't forget has still yet to agree to the optional protocol to apply the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

The text in Bunreacht could have indirect consequences on care, beyond a revision of wording. Durable Relationships should be defined in the constitution as we cannot predict how the courts will handle future legal cases. Governments change, but the constitution should be clear to cover all carergivers and care recipients.

The government was recommending the removal of the life in the home article because they took away €85 from a needy woman who is caring full time for her disabled child and the government said she can ask her male partner for the money. She took the government to court and based her legal argument to recover the €85 on the life in the home article. The case is due before the court in April and the government were trying to cut her legal argument from under her legs and so save 85 euros. Now the government will say it was for other reasons but as a former insider in government that is sometimes how government work or not work depending on your view point. Hopefully the lady will get her carers allowance restored

Also the article does not impede women from choosing to work… that’s misinformation. Most women I know work outside the home. This article has no real implication on their lives at all. It does not state a woman’s place is in the home, it says a woman provides a great service to the state with the work she does in the home. Which is true…? It does not mention working women or anywhere say EVERY woman in the state should work from home. A lot of people are projecting their own inferences and ideas onto this.

There is hige misinformation on both sides, including from your guest in this video.
This referendum represents a huge missed opportunity to take a big leap towards equality and the wording chosen is poor. If the national womens council genuinely cared about equality they would advicate for equal custodial rights for unmarried dads. In Ireland unmarried mums are automatically awarded sole custody while dads are forced to go through the courts to get even basic guardianship rights. Thus, unmarried mums will by default be assumed to be in a durable relationship with their children but dads will not. In fact, u married dads will still have zero automatic rights to care for their own children.
Yet the womens council seem to be perfectly happy with this inequality because it benefits women.
If this referendum passes, we will likely not get a chance at true equality for decades. I'm confident if theres a no vote the referendum will be re-run. I'll be voting No with the hopes that the wording is addressed to be more gender inclusive where unmarried dads aren't treated as an afterthought.

I'm from a single parent home, what the hell is she talking about saying that people are telling children "Your family isn't a real family?". Where I grew up there were lots of single parent families and I know they didn't get less benefits than the two parent ones. Seems like the gov are trying to score some social brownie points pre GE to use in their debates.
I haven't decided what I am going to vote, this is why I am watching these videos, the more I watch, the less I feel I know what the point of this is and where its going.

I’m so conflicted on the care amendment because it sounds great in a way but I just feel like it isn’t worded well and it’s confusing. I would love the language to have more foundation because ‘strive to support’ doesn’t personally sound reassuring. Why not ‘will’? Maybe I don’t know enough about constitutional law ? I also don’t love mother being completely taken out because they are the back bone of this country. I agree with the point of wanting inclusivity but is it not alienating for mothers? Could it not be specific in who the care givers are because they aren’t just parents through marriage or otherwise or guardians there are many other kinds even though they might not be considered a ‘durable relationship’? Idk man it’s confusing to me hahahah.
I do agree with the family amendment though.

Totally agree the family amendment was an easy yes for me. FLAC have concerns for the new wording for the care amendment here: www.flac.ie/news/2023/12/12/flac-highlights-concerns-with-the-proposed-care-re/
And Dr.Maeve O’Rourke has concerns you can read here maeveorourke.medium.com/a-right-to-care-and-the-care-referendum-on-8-march-9d6bdc7834ba
I have absolutely no idea about law, I needed to gather so much info and ask so many people questions and I’m still confused on how this will affect us. We still have a week to figure it out 😭

‘The State recognises that care within and outside the home and Family gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved. The State shall, therefore, take reasonable measures to support care within and outside the home and Family.’

Is it possible to vote with no voter id? As it’s saying online it is too late for me to register but I can vote if I bring ID and proof of address. Also with this vote do people know if it’s a “yes” or “no” or 1 and 2 etc. apologies I’ve never voted so I’m curious

If you’re not registered it’s too late, the last day for registration was 21st of Feb. You can check if you are on www.checktheregister.ie/en-IE/ sometimes it automatically registered you. For this it would be a ballot paper with the family amendment which you vote YES or NO and then it would be a separate one for the care amendment with YES or NO. hope this helps!

You will be voting yes to remove the word mother from the constitution, this article protects mothers who choose not to work and be the main care provider - why would we want to remove this? Im on the side of thinking it should be changed to include father/parent, but not removed.
"Durable relationship" is also open to interpretation, this is dangerous. Just like the hate speech laws can be open to interpretation. Who defines what a durable relationship is? We are living through very interesting times, there is so much misinformation. There is a war on consciousness and an anti human agenda. Just be cautious
