Resident Coho Salmon Kayak Fishing in Winter in Washington

- I got way too excited about catching this fish. We took the Hobie kayaks out to go fishing for resident coho salmon in Puget Sound, Washington. We used terminal gear. Sometimes casting works for these guys, but today trolling was more effective. It’s one of the few winter fisheries for salmon (hatchery mark-selective). It’s a weird salmon fishery though. Just found your channel used to live in wa just move to California last December. I’m more bass fishermen but used to fish for salmon.

Thanks so much! While you can find some squid year-round, the best timing for peak squid fishing is usually in the fall. It usually gets good up north first so Seattle is often a couple weeks before Tacoma. Last year, the peak squidding in the Tacoma area was early November to mid December. It was good/decent from mid October to early January. Some years it will be decent until February and could start getting good as early as late September. If you check out the Washington Squid Fishing page on Facebook you'll see people posting updates throughout the fall about whether it's good or dead at specific piers/areas to give you a better idea of when to head for that particular year.

Hi Jonnie, this is a good question.
The answer is that Area 13 is situated at the bottom of Puget Sound outside the migration path of nearly all 'constraining stocks.' Take the largest constraining Chinook stock currently, the fish returning to the Stillaguamish (these stocks can change depending on how each individual stock is doing each year). Because there is a need to allow these fish to return to river to rebuild their numbers, closures in fishing need to take place wherever and whenever they migrate through an area in Puget Sound. If you were to trace a path from the ocean to the Stilliguamish river through Puget Sound you would get an approximation of what areas would need to close or be shortened, allowing those fish to swim through. It just so happens that Area 13, being near the bottom of Puget Sound doesn't have many of those lines going through it. Now, if the Nisqually became a 'constraining stock' you would see a major loss of opportunity in Area 13, and probably major closures for the entire Puget Sound because Nisqually fish have to swim through almost all the marine areas.
The downside of this relative increased opportunity is that since there are few stocks going through Area 13, well, there are less fish. Area 13 is slow fishing, and often it being so far South the fish aren't nearly as bright or willing to bite as a fish caught in the more Northern areas.

If you're asking about Squaxin Island where the net pens are that I talk about in the video, it's near Olympia, but the fish end up all over Area 13, so most of the islands, beaches, inlets have decent fishing. But it depends on the day, and we usually just check around until we find where they are that day.

Thanks! It is a super fun fishery. Not trying to spot burn, sorry! You can find them pretty much anywhere in the south sound though around beaches, islands, inlets in the deep South Sound area. Hope that helps some :)
