I feel like this is going to be an Omori situation. It will probably take a long time to make and people will be asking for their money back and when it releases, everyone will like it.
The vanilla game is pretty much dead but the mod community is still thriving. I'm really not a fan of the game (anymore) but seeing the community still doing well is nice.
I was so surprised as a backer of this project to see that 99% of the updates are about merch, literally nothing about the game, I think they are overwhelmed by the number of backers and it is getting difficult to send the stuff to all the people, which is a bit sad because it has changed their focus from the game to art and merch. I do not believe we will see the game release anytime soon
No they did not switch from the game to merch. They are completely remaking the game engine, improving other stuff, and adding new content on top of that. They said the next update will be a V-Slice
Huh what a sight , mostly the game keeps being popularized by mods so i guess they can dip the idea of actually making the game... for now. Still , it's easily getting more hate so the developers should step up their game already before its too late.
I hope the team doesn't fault on the 'mental health' epidemic thing that is being pushed so much in social media. That team better be ready to let that $2 Million go back to their rightful owners and accept the backlash they would deserve as a result. Or get their asses in gear cause you can't just fault 'mental health' on their inabilities not when you are messing with $2 Million dollars that don't belong to you. Let alone, you can't 'mental health' you way out of this when you mess with the money of others in general.
I don't think it's entirely fair to write the game off as a failure just yet, as the devs are still actively working on it (they provide occasional updates on Twitter), but I fully agree that they're in way over their heads. This is a team of four people, and what they've promised on their kickstarter is incredibly ambitious. I'm not sure if they'll be able to finish the game and deliver on their promises, but I'd like to think that they can and will.
20 months with 2 million and multiple people to be working on the game. Sure maybe it's like Duke Nukem Forever development hell. That would be a good excuse if it wasn't for the fact modders were able to do more with less.
Tbf thats a dumb excuse, they knew how popular the game was and how small and slow the development was going and still kept those ambitious ass promises for the game while not even being able to maintain 1 week per year (tankman)
It reminds me of when Martin (the creator of The Walten Files) reacted to the kickstarter goals and basically said it was ridiculously overambitious and impossible from a dev standpoint and he got loads of hate because of it.
Tbf he wasn't, and likely still isn't in a position to talk. Martin has also overpromised with his WF series and hasn't put out any content other than merch promo in a year and so (the merch being of questionable quality too), and arguably his project isn't as difficult as this one, not to undermine his work, but definitely not as complicated as a videogame. I'm not defending the FNF team at all, they set the bar for themselves way too high and are reaping the consequences of it (rightfully so, I'm as disappointed as the next person), but Martin not only threw the first punch, he punched his own reflection
@@mariacamilavega1720 of course! not trying to bring up any drama or anything. i couldn't remember exactly what martin said and it is true he's been pretty silent on TWF. i would think martin would have the same progress as Alex with the Mandela catalogue series with videos and things but yeh it was a surprise that nothing has come out. Watching this video reminded me of that little moment in time where he did make a comment on the games development. and i just thought it was an interesting creator to creator mindset
@@TheNinetailes he basically said the whole list of things looked like "development hell", which is true. People started to take issue when he couldn't keep his mouth shut. He kept making snarky remarks and subtweeting the FNF team for a while until Kawai Sprite responded rightfully annoyed telling him to mind his business and to focus on his own series. He's a hypocrite, that's for sure
@@mariacamilavega1720 yeh I remember that and a few bits and pieces, tbh it was just a little thought. Agree that he's a hypocrite tho, as a fan of TWF I'm still waiting for the new video but personally aren't itching to get it.
I think the scariest part of Friday Night Funkin is how hard the game might flop. It feels like the modding community for Friday Night Funkin is going to continue cherry picking every possible feature that could exist within the game, add it within their own individual mods and then when the game drops, you'll be like, "Oh, these are the exploding arrows from the Tricky mod!" "This is the timing space bar taps from Lullaby!" "This is the dodge mechanic that was in Indie Cross!" "This is the life decay mechanic from Sonic.Exe! (Black Sun)" All of the gameplay mechanics and wonder that they could've put in the game will have been exhausted by the modding community, so when you play the full game, it'll probably just feel like a homage to all of the mods that have been made during the development of FNF and nothing original.
there have been many games and fnf mods that use the same mechanics they continue to feel fresh because they do it right if they can do it right then it won't feel dry
Personally I don’t care about the mechanics. They already have something people enjoy in terms of those. Their biggest selling point will be the songs imo and no modded can create those the same as they can.
Honestly, their biggest problem is promising too much content, this is a really common mistake indie developers make, so if any upcoming indie developer sees this, only promise stuff you can actually see yourself doing.
Looking back through their awards as well, yeah they in BIG. I mean even their smallest reward of Custom Songs/Character Sharing Network Hub is a HUGE task to add on top of the already planned existed game. Fully animated cutscenes, new difficult with new music arrangements, 15 additional weeks (45 songs), and a 10 week epilogue with 30 extra songs is going to be insanely difficult and back crushing. Not to mention that their already existing goal to get funded was 20 additional weeks (60 songs), unsure if that was ontop of already existing weeks or if it included the 7 weeks that already exist. Lets just say that it's already included. So they still have 38 Weeks to work on. Meaning 114 songs. Meaning 342 charts to make for the Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulties. Throwing in the Erect difficulties they now have an additional 45 songs and charts to make as well. Adding to a total of 159 songs and 387 charts. That's the base line of what they have to deliver. But that's everything. On top of everything I just mentioned. They also have to do a mobile build, Custom Character Creator, Custom Song/Custom Character Sharing Hub, Fully animated cutscenes, and Online Multiplayer. This is an insane amount to add to your plate and might not even be enough to be funded for 2 million dollars. Not even sure how much taxes took away. Potentially across 10 people right now included musicians.
Don't forget Console Releases, which can contradict modding support, as they will need additional approval from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo regarding User Generated Content. This would mean that mods like Mario's Madness will never be approved for Consoles.
Quick update: On February 11th, we finally got our first Kickstarter update in over 6 months. Pins haven't started manufacturing yet, and are still another 2 months out.
These 4 dudes were trying to stop the moon from crashing down to earth with a tennis racket, saying they bit off more than they could chew is such a complete and wild understatement
It is like being bullied by 4 delinquents back when you were 7 years old and several years later, come back to get revenge by dropping a whole nuke onto their country
This reminds me soooo much of the Omori kickstarter. Omocat also was promising the world without realizing how much work this would actually amount to. That and her team really poorly handling communication with the backers, led to a severe downwards spiral that left backers feeling like they got scammed and some even trying to take legal actions. The game did come out in the end and was pretty good, but its kickstarter clearly showed how overambition and miscommunication can quickly escalate. Especially when the devs bit off more than they could chew
Yeah, I also immediately thought of the Omori kickstarter. Thank goodness Omori turned out to be one of my favorite games ever but I agree, Omocat was very unprepared.
I really hope this ends up being a situation like Omori where the game might take forever to release, but at least ends up being a really great game at the point it comes out.
@@16016__tartOmori, Apparently they were involved in some pretty nonce-like shenanigans in the past? Idk the whole story though so take it with a grain
This seems to be the same story behind many hyped up, overfunded, and overpromised kickstarter games that don't meet deadlines and struggle with fulfilment, and certainly won't be the last. I haven't played it, but Omori seems to be one of the more famous examples alongside FNF.
@@RolandTheJabberwocky Yes? (I think you may have misunderstood my comment. Omori had the same struggle with meeting deadlines and fulfilment as FNF, along with poor communication leading to people claiming it was a scam until the game finally came out. I fully expect that FNF will be highly rated and popular if/when it comes out, just like Omori).
crowdfunding can definitely be a double-edged sword if your game gets overhyped, it ends up putting a lot more pressure on the devs to deliver on the fan's expectations this can lead to delays as the scope of the game increases to meet their audience's increasing demands and when the game does eventually come out, even if its received really positively, there will inevitably be people who are left disappointed by the final product due to having higher expectations
@@erasaesvaranrajkumar2017 I stopped keeping up with the Fandom but this is nice to hear kinda I am getting tired of searching for fnaf and then getting fnf
I agree that they bit off more than can chew. However, the game is still being developed, so I wouldn't say they actually failed at all. There were even livestreams recently that are talking about the development while sketching stuff. The only thing they failed on imo was communication. Saying FNF failed is like saying that OMORI failed (which they also failed on communication), and that eventually came out. So I am confident that we all just need to be very... very... very... patient. And eventually FNF will come out.
this game is the perfect example of getting too popular for its own good, there was zero chance of the kickstarter not having some kind of disaster happen.
@@mcduck9458 it's so cute how you try to sound condescending and smart but you couldn't actually refute nothing that he said, nor give an example on how is wrong lmao
Honestly if it wasn't for the fan mods this game would have lost relevancy a year or so ago. The base game hasn't received an update in nearly two years and most recent fanmods completely blow the base game out of the water. If the modding scene dies, which it very well may by the time fnf actually releases, nobody will care about the project anymore. I've noticed the modding scene has been slowing down recently from its hayday of 2021 - early/mid 2022 as well, so the devs are running out of time...
They clearly weren't expecting 2 MILLION dollars of goals met. They were all underestimating how big their community was, and now they've basically promised a bunch of stuff that a team of four can't really do in this short of a time frame. Give them time and I'm sure it'll come out some day, ideally like Omori or both Hollow Knights. Let's just hope it won't be like Yandere Simulator. Edit: I'd like everyone to keep out of the replies now. They're super toxic on both sides on the argument and I'd really prefer that not ALL of my notifications come from this single comment. Edit 2: go play pizza tower instead of commenting on this
hopefully not hollow knight lmao that game is ass, fnf in its current state is the most mediocre indie game in existance but if they can actually make it something good that would be cool. it's totally a scam though lmao
I came here to say this. I’m not a fan of FNF but it hasn’t even been two years since the Kickstarter reached its goal. I can plainly see that with the scope of what they want and the size of their team it’s gonna take at least several more years, that does not mean they are not working on it. People need to chill and stop assuming the worst of the devs.
I feel the biggest problem with Friday night funkin is that mods have shown how fast people can pump out content and bangers of songs with just mere months or sometimes weeks. So it’s making everyone just give up on them and want a refund. (Btw I am just pointing out the majority folks)
There are mods made within days, some even within hours. Obviously, the talent of the people working and the time put on the mods are what define their quality, as no mod is equal to the rest, but the timeframe is still crazy.
From standpoint of the devs, creating the ideal FNF for the final release is hard, literally. FNF community is *truly* thriving, starting from Original Mods & songs, HD Fanmade remaster sprites, and even Something such as improved Source code made by fan which has better input speed, ETC&ETC. If the devs creates a full FNF game that doesn't reach Playerbase expectations, you know what mess they will faced against. Meanwhile the game got Ridiculous Support, and now the devs put under pressure as well. The reason why they don't put any progress showcase on any social media, is possibly to keep the people expectations stagnant, low possibly. Hyping player expectations by giving leaks and updates will result in similar case of "No man sky"
A modder also had stole week 8 stuff that had been show in streams before, and made a mod of it claiming they made the assets, which is even more reason to not show too much content.
As someone who has spent money on the kickstarter and has not received my rewards for the enamel pin tier, I just wish they would give us more updates. The fact that it's consistently dead news for months at a time seriously kills my patience since I'm not being told what's going on behind the scenes. If they're working hard, I would like to know. I understand that the project is bigger than they ever imagined, but I'm sure they would get much less hate if they actually took the time to update people often.
They have been apparently consistently updating elsewhere, but oops, they literally told nobody where these updates were being made and in fact seem to not give a shit about making sure people know and then being shocked when people are mad at them.
@@papingosstudios161 I liked what they were doing, liked the music, and it was a simple rhythm game that I could play. If it's something I would end up enjoying, $35 is a pretty normal amount to drop on a game these days. I did happen to get perks alongside it so not a bad deal. My main issue is simply just a lack of communication.
in my opinion, this game was supposed to go in a completely different direction, but due to the outburst of the too-young community, they changed their plans and started all over again
@@edencest with how much money they received, it wouldn't be understandable, if they just dropped it It will obviously just take a while longer. I'd rather have a good game with longer development time, than a rushed game
I can see that, but I sincerely hope not. I feel like much of Funkin's original appeal lies in its crass "old-internet" nostalgia, something that newgrounds has always had in spades. I really hope they don't compromise on that original theme. And while I don't personally think they will based on what little we have to go on right now, I wouldn't be surprised if they did, and that'd make me a little sad.
@@whodistoodis considering the amount of money and support the project got from, an admittedly younger audience, i wouldn't be surprised if they changed the "old-internet" appeal, the same way fnaf abandoned it's creepier undertones after it got so many young fans.
The typos and swearing and laid-back approach to updates for their backers makes this feel like a cartoon where the characters are doing something professional in a stupid way and still succeeding at it somehow. That's the vibe I get from it.
@@TheSearchForTruth88 - I can see a couple of your other comments on here, and honestly I think you’re interpreting the actions of the devs in the worst light possible. This behavior doesn’t read as “blatant scammer”, it reads as “inexperienced edgelords trying to be funny”. I didn’t fund it (I suck at rhythm games) but I checked the Kickstarter because of this video. They promised 60 new songs, meaning programming, assets, and animations for 20 new levels and more original songs than most Triple A games have. This is also not including all the other random bells and whistles they tacked on. It’s gonna take a lot longer than a year with the size of their team and it was severely naive of anyone to assume that would be possible. As someone who’s brushed up against a lot of different Kickstarter game scams, people who are intentionally trying to scam others out of their money compose themselves in a way that’s completely different than a team going through production hell. FNF honestly reads as the latter to me. They made promises that they couldn’t fulfill in a timely manner due to being too young and inexperienced. I don’t think they’re actively malicious.
@floobix It is. Conspiratorial thinking requires mental gymnastics to think this wasn't a scam. They promised a game, one wasn't delivered. Very simple.
I want to at least wish the Funkin' dev team a good luck. It's gonna be hard managing a successful kickstarter, and a full game. Even though I hate it's toxic fandom, the base game is what I think is truly the main course. I think this video actually summarizes when a game concept is successful, and it leaves people with so much ambition. Epic video! New Sub!
I loved the funny little rap battle simulator when it first came out. People quickly forgot that it was supposed to be a rap battle simulator. Next thing you know, people have spent almost 2.25 million dollars on something and they haven't gotten an update to the status of the game (not even a little bit of gameplay) in almost two years.
Honestly, while the community is partially absolutely terrible and doesn't seem to be getting much better,at this point i'd much rather give my money to any of the fantastic teams behind even more fantastic mods than the og game.
I love and hate this game for it's fandom. The fandom created Whitty, but then they destroyed him Also the fandom wouldn't be nearly as bad if more than one out every 3 devs weren't secretly creepy pedophiles.
@@skinwalker69420 I’m pretty sure there’s been some leaks if you search for it. Things like the assets for Nene and Darnell for instance you can find on twitter or here on RUclips. There’s also Phantom Arcades streams, like the one where he was animating the intro for the game and some other things. The devs also clearly still do acknowledge the game and show care for it. As there are plenty of official comics on it that have been released fairly recently. Also keep in mind absolutely no one had any clue what was gonna happen for Week 7 until PA accidentally slipped up and revealed an image of it. So they’re clearly trying to hide this stuff, hence the lack of teasers.
I am a backer, I backed quite a bit so I've been pretty disgruntled. Game development takes time, but that leaves no excuse for the lack of communication from the devs. Obviously, it's on me for backing in the first place, but how things have been going has left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I'm glad that there are fans who are able to enjoy it and mod for it. I play several rhythm games, so I'm hoping things do end up in a better place, but I don't want to get my hopes up. Have yet to get any of the items promised as well.
with a lot of people pointing out how omori had a similar process, i think people should be more patient with game development omocat had a much larger team working on omori after she found out that rpgmaker development wasn't as easy as she expected, while there's only like 4 people on fnf
Scapper, omocat redid the game multiple times, but she scrapped the first years of development after people called her out for being a shotacon citing posts she made, which uh the game was worryingly close to at that time with omori jacking off and stuff. FNF has defined goals and a defined purpose
@@allseeingirene Undertale literally took 4 years to release from the kickstarter if i remember right, not to mention most company games tend to take 4-5 years to be made, and this is with a huge corporation behind it. Asking for them to literally just say they're still working on it every few months at the very least is NOT being entitled. Radio silence for over 6 months is completely unreasonable if people gave you money.
The team should've definitely waited to release physical media until all the songs are ready. It's hard to update those discs and vinyl with new songs after the fact.
Honestly I never in any way expected timeliness or seriousness from their updates, I grew up following newgrounds creators and I learned that they always deliver, just never when they say or when you want.
Most Newgrounds creators also don't make Kickstarters for their projects or ask any money for them though. Once you create a kickstarter that receives 2 million dollars from 60,000 backers you have an obligation to fulfill the Kickstarter in a reasonable amount of time and keep people updated on the project. Not be utterly silent and make promises that continue to go unfulfilled. Genuinely if the devs recieved no money for fnf I wouldn't be complaining right now, and I doubt most people would be as well.
@@flandrescarlet506 You're high if you think no newgrounds dev has ever asked for money before hand, or has a patreon. This is a small team making a massive rhythm game that will be twice as long and feature full than AAA rhythm games, so its going to take a long while.
FNF is gonna be one of those situations where the mods will live on longer then the game. Before minecraft had another sudden just boost with updates, it kinda had this mellow phase where it just sorta was popular because of all the cool mods people made.
u sure ppl came back to minecraft only bc of those updates? ever since 1.9 (combat update) it's been getting worse, but it's especially worse now because of the new textures and 1.16.5 modding changing from forge to fabric or whatever. Wish we had the Warden before all of this new stuff.

I want someone here in the comments to notify me when the game comes out in the future, or when something terrible happens that involves the game in the future.
I just wanna see the game come out. Personally, I would LOVE for mechanics from mods to pop up, it would show just how supportive ninjamuffin is of the modding community, especially since the entire game as of week 7 is completely open source to the public.
Adding mod mechanics is a right rope between,”showing support and appreciation for the community” and “stealing ideas from fans with no credit or payment”
@appleslat9928 I think it really depends on the personality of the devs, but yeah I’d like to see some mod mechanics as well and the devs don’t seem scummy
The game is still being developed, so I don't think we've seen the end of FnF, not by a long shot. From the tidbits of what we've seen such as the cutscenes and the new "Erect" songs for each week, I think FnF can make a comeback if the news update is worth all the waiting time.
The developers have clearly moved on (as noted by them seeming to start new projects, look at ninjamuffin's newgrounds page), and the GitHub (where the code for the project goes whenever a change has been made to the game) hasn't received an update in six months, and that update was to fix a spelling mistake in the readme. The project is dead and the fact that people are still holding onto hope that it's not dead is honestly hilarious.
I think the recent release of the Vs. Impostor V4 mod is a good reference point. It took THEM over a year to get this update out, working with Innersloth themselves on a mod that has over 50 songs, a currency system, SOME animated cutscenes (some even got scrapped), etc. So depending on the team size, I think it makes sense that it's taking so long, and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if GTA VI releases before this game does. And I'd also like to praise for the community for keeping this otherwise dead game alive. Although I also find it funny that there are two fully functional Online VS. mods out there XD
The dev team recieved two million dollars which they could have used to hire more people once the Kickstarter ended. It's sad that large fanmods like V4 are being made in less time than the base game... without any money involved.
Just a quick side point, Innersloth only really gave them chromatics for the characters in Henry's week, a lot of the mod's work was done within their own team
I do hope that they start to give us more serious development updates in the future. As someone who pledged 15$ for the early bird deal, I don’t have a huge problem if this project falls through. Despite that, I do wish the developers my best and hope they can exceed with their goals. I have not played fnf in a long while, but I still really enjoy the game and I’m excited to see more official content.
As a fan who is part of the community and got the vinyl- it is really sad to see how little info we're getting. On the plus side- I recently got my record earlier this month!
Well the creators stated that they wanted to keep development a secret till launch because they didn’t want to be pressured into launching the game or something like that
@@rinka7114 I know, but this current system isnt working, give us a % of how much they believe they've completed, or tease an instrumental to a song here n' there, or have polls held on kickstarter exclusively on things to be included
I feel like this could be an OMORI/Silk Song situation, well very little updates then a masterpiece. They did bite a lot more than they could've ever expected
Look at Omori's Kickstarter. They had detailed updates every 1-4 months that showed off game progress, transparency regarding what might be holding back progress (such as the engine needing to be upgraded of making things difficult), concepts for the game in the works (such as updated battle systems), new characters, things going on behind the scenes with the team, and much more. There was one ten months break between updates for Omori in 2018/2019, but that's it. Omori had communication issues but their Kickstarter updates look like a masterpiece in comparison to fnf updates, which are just about merch and share little info with backers about what's going on with the game that's been in the works for two years.
Good video. I didn't really realize until just how ambitious the goals are. 75 weeks that probably all have 3 songs in them, with remixes of every song, AND cutscenes is insane for a group of 4 people. I just like fnf for the mods since the vanilla game is almost nonexistent in comparison
well, since the 7 weeks are basically a demo, the mods are basically the full game. If you just play through the 7 main weeks, you haven't even come close to understanding fnf and it's seemingly infinite well of banger songs, fun mechanics/charting, and interesting stories.
And I’m starting to remember when one of my friends on discord advised us to not back this kickstarter. She was saying it was over ambitious and with everything being promised it sounded like it could collapse on itself and be a scam. To be fair, she wasn’t saying don’t support them, just that the kickstarter was getting so blown out of the water it might not be able to make a landing

On one hand I tottaly understand how hard it is to deliver all the perks AND make the game. But if they're not even trying to be a little serious about it I can't help but be annoyed by it. If I had spent my hard earned money on this just to be hit with 1 and a half YEAR delay on just the physical music I'd be extremely bitter.
I personally think the people saying this will be like the OMORI situation and that it will be fine when the end product releases are excusing the absolutely poor communication on the games progress, it should not be the standard that backers have to sit and not know if the game they funded their hard earned money into is actually being worked on in a productive manner or not.
I definitely think it doesn’t excuse it, I don’t think it was good the Omori developers did that either, but you can’t really deny the fact it’s awfully similar. The main thing I don’t understand is why the developers can’t give more proper updates, I mean in the Omori case it was because of orders given by Omocat but idk what the reason is with FNF
Yeah, I agree. It's kind of unfortunate we're in an era where creators could have a lot more direct communication with their community, but a lot decide not to, or do it on other platforms rather than the ones their backers gravitated toward.
It’s so weird looking back on this fandom after being out of it for at least a year. I was really into it back in its heyday, and thought that I’d still enjoy it when it fully released in a few years. Well, those years have come and gone and now I barely care about the game anymore. The fandom got so toxic that I just left. It died before it even fully released. Pretty darn sad…
I honestly wonder how they felt once they realized what a massive magnitude this passion project brought upon the Internet The feeling was prob even more overwhelming than they anticipated
This is a good example of why scope is so important in making a game. A creator has 48 hours to make a game, so they make sure it isn't too big. If you have a year, make sure you don't try to make that big of a game, because though that might seem like a lot of time, it really goes by quickly.
@Resean Yeah, as a backer it's pretty frustrating. For the most part they just share merch updates on the kickstsrter, and when they do share info pertaining to the game it's small and insultingly vague. The kickstarter last recieved an update in July still, which is frustrating because Ninjamuffin promised to update the kickstarter on New Year's... and he didn't.
@@flandrescarlet506 Why do you think they didn't? They update something, and the fanbase decides to make a mod out of it, which is why we are only getting vague updates about the game.

There was an update that just dropped today on this Kickstarter. It's still not much, but it basically announced that there is a solid pipeline for updates and a blog to help with communicating with the community
As soemone who sometimes watches WickedWiz's "What went wrong?" series, I immediately felt that this is not going to be a story where fans get what they want, not easily anyways.
As a person working on animated series by myself, I don't blame them for taking so long. Putting up high expectations can put a lot on people. It sure as hell is putting a lot of pressure on me and it doesn't help that there's no people who want to voice act. :"< So it's taking even longer. So I don't blame them.
This video and what I've seen so far of the "angered" fans has to be the second worst case of horribly spoiled and extremely entitled gamers I've ever seen.
I am a big backer of this project, I backed 200 bucks for some tasteful merchandise, and am pretty upset I haven't gotten it yet. Though I personally think that everything promised will be provided... eventually... and I fully agree with that last statement; once the dust settled, all that was left was 4 young adults, a big promise, and 58 thousand people to please.
Honestly same. While I'm not mad with the lack of updates, I do chuckle since by the time I backed the Kickstarter I have moved twice since then. Crazy how the time flew. And besides I did manage to grab a copy of the official soundtrack on minidisc. So I think that can satisfy me for a bit longer.
The issue I see is that a lot of indie creators (and it's horribly prevalent with the ones that started on Flash websites) is that they lack management skills and understanding. The result is that when their work go from "passion project" to "actual business", they fail to properly plan their resource spending, and they treat their "financial backers" as "fans" who'll perfectly understand if they goof off.
I'm sure the full game will do extraordinarily well if they focus on the game they want to make, and not what fans push onto them. Though, accepting some fan feedback on how to make the game better wouldn't hurt, as long as it's not overboard. Though, I will say that it's a shame that they don't pay attention to mods of the game. Because there are some really good ideas that would be amazing to see in the full game. But like I said, we like the game because of what THEY made. So I'm excited to see what they come up with.
This is why subcontractors exist. If the FNF crew was a bit more savvy, they'd contact a game development studio that works with publishers to assist with development and marketing and even organization. With that kind of money, they can and should hire more help.
@@jackxsonz I read their blog and read that they hired people. They promised an update to Kickstarter backers on January 1st and failed to deliver, and have still yet to share substantial game progress. The blog says they're thinking about updating the input system and have an in-progress mod loader, that's great... but how far along is the game? When can we expect a demo? It's been two years and we've yet to receive any substantial information about the game's progress.
I used to play this game all the time in my Sophomore year of HS (2020-2021 school year), but I stopped playing like during 2021 Summer because the game was getting old. Thank god the mod community is around to make the game more FUN
I think Kickstarter's stretch goals are a problem. They cause creators to overpromise so they can secure more funding. And the stretch goals are usually neglected or forgotten entirely
You know, this is one of the fandoms that made me realize I shouldn't ask for much and should enjoy the current things we have. The mods were great but I wanted to see more (original) mods and game mechanics. I wanted this game to get popular. And it happened, but at what prize?
I think they just made the stretch goals insane thinking in their heads "yeah no way we are ever gonna reach this so who cares what we put" then suddenly their goal of 60k is destroyed by the raised 2 million and now they are left panicking as they have to deliver on the product they technically promised but never actually meant to ship out.
Honestly the way they’ve handled the project reminds me of a middle schooler trying to do homework. Making excuses and saying it’s almost done while doing absolutely nothing. Video aside, it took me until the end of it to realize this was TheRealSullyG! Great work making this Sully!
A lot of people in the comments don’t understand clearly what’s been going on in the backgrounds for the funkin crew. The truth is that they had to actually make a company and had to do a FUCK TON of legal shit that’s not been fully getting in the way but still getting in the way of developing the game. They want to focus on delivering the backer stuff first before focusing on the game. Also, check their accounts y’all. That’s where you can get more updates about this stuff. They have been also hiring people for game dev, including a modder in the community. So,needless to say,the guys have been busy. Also, that date for the game’s release on kickstarter was for the game if it only hit 60k. I get people want to see stuff but Phantom Arcade said they actually want to surprise people with the stuff they have been cookin and not deal with people making mods using their assets, like what happened with week 8. People need to learn to be patient and look in other places for info. Also, the actual release date is probably gonna be in the late 2020’s.
Takes me a whole year to create a 10min episode with 20 straight lines imagine the amount of time it take to make a whole company produce 72 songs create 72 cuts energy and code all of that and all of the new features of the game bro and robtop is currently working on 2.2 of gd which haven't released yet in 3+ years, coding takes a lot of time especially to make a whole game people must realize this
@@PlutoNonary Again, the thing is,they have communicated to the community up until December last year on Twitter. It’s just that people have been focusing more on the kickstarter and not checking their Twitter. Also, they don’t want to mention anything about content for the game because they don’t want people to mod it in countless times and ruin the surprise for people.
Once this whole ordeal has reached the five year mark, one of two things should happen. Problems are fixed, real work is being put in, no more "I lied," "Sorry for the delay but," and we can see real progress being made. Or, the biggest and saddest apology to the community will be made along side broken promises and refunded money.
It’s weird to me. The biggest issue with FNF development is that I feel it’s a never ending race. How can you make the best version of the game, when the fandom is doing it 1000 times better & innovated. At first it blown the waters in the first few weeks. Then the community caught up the same time week 7 dropped. Now it’s been a long time since then, and you see this game’s fandom doing all sorts of insane things and mechanics we never expected from base game. So the devs have to innovate to too that so it don’t seem underwhelming, but at the same time not give into what the fandom wants. Rather what they want. As for the kickstarter stuff, yeah. I feel like they set themselves up for too much, and couldn’t live up to it right now. At the same time, this game could take ages to finish with what they had originally planned. So who knows the outcome of this.
in defense of the physical media part, it has been shipping since like, november or december, which is when i got my stuff. also phantom arcades streams, newgrounds posts, and various twitter threads werent taken into account
The physical media could have been released much sooner if not for the utter incompetence of Ninjamuffin somehow giving Needlejuice records the wrong customer information. Kickstarter backers should also not have to leave Kickstarter in order to find out information about the project they backed. The point of Kickstarter updates is to inform backers about progress on the project, which for whatever reason is not being utilized. The devs never told Kickstarter backers that they must watch streams, look at Twitter, and ect. for updates. It is assumed all game updates will be posted to Kickstarter, as that's how Kickstarters work.
FNF was something a lot of my friends use to play in 2021 and I am someone who really misses 2021 and through 2022 I cried thinking about 2021 multiple times and I’ve always wondered what happened to it and I really hope it gains popularity again
I’ve always thought this could happen what was promised in the kickstarter seemed to be overwhelming for a small game dev team and now it’s been more than a year and we still have nothing 😐
I mean they're very obviously working on it and we don't see much gameplay because they said they want to surprise us Take VS Impostor V4 as an example They took over a year to make the update, with a giant team and even innersloth themselves helping them. Now image VS Impostor V4 but made by an WAY smaller team with WAY more work to do, 1 year isn't that big when you realize how hard it is to develop a game, regardless of it being a 40 hour long fps or a goofy rhythm game. yes it is their fault for making promises without actually thinking if they could fufill it in time, but still, people expect a little too much from this small group of friends
a good way too develop a game is too keep the scope manageable during the development cycle so that the devs dont get overburdened i think hollow knight is a masterclass on game development in this regard the devs design philosophy was too always focus on expanding the size of the game, but making sure to focus on the most important, fundamental areas before delving into any additions/side content. this allowed them to add as much extra content as they wanted, but without worrying as much about being overwhelmed by their work; they could basically stop development of the game at any time, and have a complete product on their hands. in addition to this, a lot of the kickstarter rewards were added in free post-release expansion packs, so they wouldnt have to worry about those additions while developing the base game. smart decisions like this is how team cherry was able to craft one of the largest, well-crafted metroidvanias in history with only a three-person development team.
@@suspiciousamogus The FNF devs recieved 2 million dollars though. Seriously what is stopping the FNF dev team from hiring more people to make the team as large as some of the teams behind fan mods? If V4 could make 50 tracks, a currency system, art and animations in a year... what is stopping the FNF team from hiring more people to make FNF happen in a shorter, more reasonable amount of time? They received 2 million dollars and have an obligation to 60,000 kickstarter backers. Modders work for free (sometimes slight pay if art or something is commissioned) and have no obligations to make anything.
@@flandrescarlet506 well seeing as ninja muffin is currently “talking with their lawyers” over funky Friday ( Roblox game ) getting sponsored by sonic prime I think they are just making excuses at this point
@@flandrescarlet506 $2 mil worth of employees can easily be drained in a year or two. And for comparing V4 to the actual game, there is a huge gap, with a minimum of 60 songs confirmed and along with those songs and previous songs, there will be erect difficulty remixes for all of them. This is not including the new gameplay mechanics, online leaderboards (which cost to run), cutscenes, a 2 player system, their own art and animation, collabs, and more, this is not a project that can be resolved just by throwing money at it. With Kawaii Sprite and his music, FNF has always been first and foremost about its beats and art, so you can't bumrush the creative direction the team has in mind for FNF development. Just like Omori, this is a project that will need time to get right.
And people complained about Omori. At least Omocat was taking it seriously and trying to get the game out. These people are just like “oh well” or “oh yeah it’ll be out but we were lying lol get rekt”
I’m still glad to be part of the community. The mods are just getting better and better with high-effort projects from the community such as FNF: Lullaby, and Indie Cross.
Funnily enough this is similar to what happened to another Kicksatarter that I backed. I backed an indie game called Renaine at Pax 2018, they had a very small 5k goal but ended up hitting 22k. This included 9/10 of their stretch goals, as of today, the game still hasn't shipped and isn't finished, it had an estimated delivery time of January 2019, four full years ago. Luckily they have kept a constant string of updates through out the years and have been very professional. But I think FNF will come out, just maybe it will come out in 2030, I think they greatly under estimated how much money they would have and how long it would take to make. Hopefully they start using some of that money to hire more team members and a pr/update guy lmao.
as a game developer myself, i can empathise with the team. ambition is a double edge sword. yes they could have handled things better, but having it go from a silly passion project to a full time job that quickly would shake anyone up i actually sank some money into the kickstarter, not a lot though (im not made on money haha)
When the situation gets so out of control... you just have to pull yourself together. Make something like a "road map", painting when you should expect this or that level, and do everything gradually. First, just port the game and make it a normal version, then hire more people so that someone will deal with the merch, someone with the version for phones, invite the authors of modifications, and just do what they already know how to do at their own pace. These guys were drowned by disorganization. Always think about the organization of the work process before sitting down for any of the projects.
I do hope they manage to get all this out. I never even thought about it, but this tiny team of new devs promised a LOT of cool stuff... They were definitely not prepared. Once the game comes out, i hope itll be good
I payed $40 and I did get the CD. They’re not scammers, I think they weren’t expecting how many backers and how much money they were going to get and kind of panicked and “fumbled the bag”. I think they’re trying to focus on the kickstarter rewards so the supporters don’t feel ripped off which unfortunately is drawing them away from the game.
It makes sense that the game is going to take much longer than expected with the amount of extra stuff they promised however they really should keep people updated more often
I honestly can't hate the FNF team for how they responded to this. FNF skyrocketed in popularity nearly instantly and I can understand that they wanted to create a project but clearly overestimated their ability and underestimated how much people were willing to support them. I do genuinely hope the team manages to get their shit together and get the ball rolling.
FNF seems to be going through what I call the 'Minecraft cycle' - it was very popular, then kids started to like the game so it was associated with cringe, and it will eventually become popular again and the cycle continues.
Honestly I think they could pull most of what they promised off, if they hire more people, a lot of this is four people with a lot of over ambition (trust me I know trying to make an fnf mod with more than one week takes more than One lone animator, one composer, one coder and one director). It’s an indie game with a small team it’s gonna take a while. We’ve seen things like this happen with omori and a hat in time, taking way longer to make than originally intended, but turning out amazing in the end.
I got my father into Friday night Funkin and for my birthday he was going to donate so I could get the benefits. I kinda glad he missed the closing date for the kickstarter.
Just found this channel, i like your straight forwardness, non-biased attitude towards them. understanding they bit off more than they could chew. Thanks, man!
To be fair, I think it would be more professional and would look good on their behalf to take a more serious approach. However, It’s not entirely their fault that it’s taking so long. They asked what the people wanted, and now, they have to make it!
It actually IS, their fault for taking so long, they made the kickstarts with WAYYY too many ambitious and unrealistic promises, they new how popular the game was and new how slow development was, not to mention, people always say “it’s only a 5 man team” then why don’t they just…hire more people? Like genuinely what is stopping them from hiring more people, more art designers, more coders, like seriously what’s their excuse? Not to mention, by the time they “finish” the game, even its modding community will have died by then, it will be all for nothing, and they made a bag and people STILL haven’t gotten their kickstarter rewards like the games soundtrack CD’s for example
@@Fillr_ The last part i can agree with, that is a load of bullshit and i am personally pissed off about that even though i didn’t contribute to the rewards and shit. However, when you said, “they knew how popular the game was”, think. Why would they take so long to add a bunch of shit that NO ONE WOULD’VE THOUGHT TO ADD with a game being SO POPULAR… that it’s mod community is more known than the original game? No offense but… Isn’t it obvious? They added this stuff because they are basically getting their game MADE FOR THEM! There are some people making monstrous creations out there and all the base game does is use the same bf skin for 4 weeks straight and has a few absolute bangers! (FEW!) My point is, They are doing this to keep their game alive, to remind people that THEY are going to add SOO MANY THINGS to give these modders MOOORRRE things! Once that “mobile port” is made, ANYONE CAN MAKE A MOD! Could you imagine how much people will buy that game the moment their eyes see the text that states they can do that? And the reason for the 5 team people thing is because fnf’s original charm is made through this style, they don’t wanna fuck it up, which, i agree, but disagree with.
this just sounds like a big ol' lesson in "don't make promises you can't keep." sometimes it feels like people making kickstarters add super high goals that they don't expect to achieve to incentivise more backers, and don't have any plans on how they would actually fulfill the promise they put in place
Omori had a 5 years time gap between the kickstarter and release date, undertale had a 3 years time gap between the kickstarter and release date, meanwhile fnf is still on fucking 2 years (kickstarter was made on 2021), game development take time, people expecting them to release the entire game out of nowhere in the middle of 2023 don't understand a thing about game development, and no mods aren't the same thing as creating a original game.

I'd say the community is doing far from well
But hey at least we got steady content
its still being worked on but its meant to be a full game so of coarse game hell etc they've been planning a update and such but it got leaked
also phantom has confirmed that cutscenes are being worked on
The community of this game makes me cry in pure, paralyzing, despair...
I think they really should of tried harder to hire people to help work on the game and get it out faster and to get the physical media done
Nu mă așteptam ca Rafael sa fie aici:))

(Black Sun)"
All of the gameplay mechanics and wonder that they could've put in the game will have been exhausted by the modding community, so when you play the full game, it'll probably just feel like a homage to all of the mods that have been made during the development of FNF and nothing original.
This
not really, except for the final boss maybe.
When I think dodge mechanic my first thought is the QT mod… is that one too old now? 😔
there have been many games and fnf mods that use the same mechanics
they continue to feel fresh because they do it right
if they can do it right then it won't feel dry
Personally I don’t care about the mechanics. They already have something people enjoy in terms of those. Their biggest selling point will be the songs imo and no modded can create those the same as they can.
Honestly, their biggest problem is promising too much content, this is a really common mistake indie developers make, so if any upcoming indie developer sees this, only promise stuff you can actually see yourself doing.
exactly. They aren't scammers. But they are very unprepared in making games
@@X2011racer i think that the console version will be some sort of "legacy edition" with less content. I just have this feeling

A modder also had stole week 8 stuff that had been show in streams before, and made a mod of it claiming they made the assets, which is even more reason to not show too much content.
exactly, and as much as it was to build up hype for the new week, that was still a pretty ass thing for the modder to do
As someone who has spent money on the kickstarter and has not received my rewards for the enamel pin tier, I just wish they would give us more updates. I can see that, but I sincerely hope not. I feel like much of Funkin's original appeal lies in its crass "old-internet" nostalgia, something that newgrounds has always had in spades.

Thank god the mod community is around to make the game more FUN
i like how all of the yt chapters have images Sully talking mid sentence with his hand up
I think Kickstarter's stretch goals are a problem.
Takes me a whole year to create a 10min episode with 20 straight lines imagine the amount of time it take to make a whole company produce 72 songs create 72 cuts energy and code all of that and all of the new features of the game bro and robtop is currently working on 2.2 of gd which haven't released yet in 3+ years, coding takes a lot of time especially to make a whole game people must realize this
The more effort people put into projects the more time it takes miners need patience to find gold so we should be patient
@@kuronblue
2.2 has taken over 6 years so far
The problem is that they dont understand BECAUSE the crew has been radio silent and has not communicated with the community
Honestly I want them to take their time, mostly for the music’s sake. I love the music and can’t wait for more
It’s weird to me.
They should hire some of the developers that made FNF mods to be a part of the development team so they can get some helping hands.
they actually have!
in defense of the physical media part, it has been shipping since like, november or december, which is when i got my stuff. also phantom arcades streams, newgrounds posts, and various twitter threads werent taken into account
Well, ever since I found out about a mod that literally was about somebody suicide I don’t know about the popularity coming back
Hearing "back in 2021" just made me feel like a relic. I'm not even that old, at all.
I’ve always thought this could happen what was promised in the kickstarter seemed to be overwhelming for a small game dev team and now it’s been more than a year and we still have nothing 😐
I mean they're very obviously working on it and we don't see much gameplay because they said they want to surprise us
Take VS Impostor V4 as an example
They took over a year to make the update, with a giant team and even innersloth themselves helping them.
Now image VS Impostor V4 but made by an WAY smaller team with WAY more work to do, 1 year isn't that big when you realize how hard it is to develop a game, regardless of it being a 40 hour long fps or a goofy rhythm game.
yes it is their fault for making promises without actually thinking if they could fufill it in time, but still, people expect a little too much from this small group of friends
a good way too develop a game is too keep the scope manageable during the development cycle so that the devs dont get overburdened
i think hollow knight is a masterclass on game development in this regard
the devs design philosophy was too always focus on expanding the size of the game, but making sure to focus on the most important, fundamental areas before delving into any additions/side content. this allowed them to add as much extra content as they wanted, but without worrying as much about being overwhelmed by their work; they could basically stop development of the game at any time, and have a complete product on their hands.
in addition to this, a lot of the kickstarter rewards were added in free post-release expansion packs, so they wouldnt have to worry about those additions while developing the base game.
smart decisions like this is how team cherry was able to craft one of the largest, well-crafted metroidvanias in history with only a three-person development team.
These people are just like “oh well” or “oh yeah it’ll be out but we were lying lol get rekt”
i hope they are still working on this game, and are actually going to put out the content they promised
Ha! *_HAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAA!_* You won't get one drop of content. *_BAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA_*
They won’t
you will see it, it's just gonna be a loooooong while.
Press X to doubt
I’m still glad to be part of the community. The mods are just getting better and better with high-effort projects from the community such as FNF: Lullaby, and Indie Cross.
Lullaby is cancelled
@@numbuh1507 Yeah I know. We still got a lot of good content out of the build.
underfunkin too
don't forget Hotline 024 and Among Us v4
Anyone know the name of the song at the end of the video?
Hopefully they start using some of that money to hire more team members and a pr/update guy lmao.
as a game developer myself, i can empathise with the team. ambition is a double edge sword.
yes they could have handled things better, but having it go from a silly passion project to a full time job that quickly would shake anyone up
i actually sank some money into the kickstarter, not a lot though (im not made on money haha)
Once the game comes out, i hope itll be good
And here i thought Friday Night Funkin' was a complete game with a lot of mods made by fans. But wow, the full game isn't even out.
And now that the game is dead I just want a refund
@@mattgroening8872 If the game doesn't get made in the next like 5 years I think all of the backers are entitled to some form of a refund.
@@SpagettiSpeltWronga full on game is being made?
@@RaphielShiraha64 what people are expecting is to either do things by the time THEY set OR have proper and consistent updates on the progress.
