Marble Clock Saga: • MARBLE CLOCK
In my quest to build a marble clock that displays seconds I got to a point where none of the things that I've tried worked reliably so I went back to the drawing board and after internalizing that this marble clock is in itself an absurd machine and that no one can stop me I went all in and built a contraption that at the same time that makes no sense it also works reliably and will make the clock able to work 100% of the time.
This is just one fourth of the total assembly that I have planned for the mechanism required to show one of the two digits required to show seconds and I'll probably merge this clock with the original one so It can show at the same time the complete time with hours, minutes and seconds and make some marble "music" at the same time.
From what I've experienced and If I manage to build it entirely, this will be the first clock that can be detected by a seismograph.
    Marbles!!!

I think the next big project alongside this one will be a marble collector that’ll be able to separate black and white marbles for use again with the clock …and something tells me the white ones will be steel, and black ones ebony wood, and magnetism will separate the balls and send them back to the top of the clock to be used again … 😊

It is VERY HARD to see the DIFFERENCE between the BLACK 'marbles' and the "WHITE" 'marbles' .... I think it's because the BLACK ones still REFLECT a lot of light - There HAS TO be a way to create a BETTER CONTRAST between them... I have NO IDEA HOW tho... I just wanted you to know that it's pretty hard to tell the difference between them... :)

Just show them in time. With the swipe, you can put them away in an ordered fashion.

Apparently there is a Malign Force in the multiverse perversely attracted to either marbles, steel balls, European prodigies w fun accents, or perhaps all three. I believe this could be simplified a lot by removing the darker coloured marbles. They were needed in the original clock in order to serve as a placeholder, but in this design, they don't actually serve any purpose. If you removed them, you could remove the marble sorter.
You could also make a 5 x 3 display grid that was operated by gates driven by servos: one to allow a marble to roll into the display, and another that would allow the marble to leave the display. To adjust seconds, you would then only need to add or remove the individual marbles that differ between the digits. For example - to change an '8' into a '9', you only need to remove two marbles (bottom left corner): all the others can just remain in place. Making digits change this way would hugely cut down the number of marble each second you need to deal with. You'd also get quite a nice morphing effect between digits. Hard to explain without a diagram I'm sorry - but a total of 30 servo operated gates: two for each dot of the digit: one to allow a marble in, the other to allow it out, and only move marbles when necessary.

How about using only white marbles? by having a marble/no marble pixel, filling or leaving the spot empty on the refresh cycle by changing the speed at which the new marble impinges? (Faster marble = both marbles are displaced = black pixel; slower marble = new marble stops in place = white pixel; no marble dropped = no pixel change)

Such an imaginative waste of time! Are you sure you are not English? (Intended as a compliment)
I have to admit I'd cheat. Pick one colour to be the marbles that move, and the other colour likely glued to solenoids to function as gates. All the selection could then be done quickly and simply at the solenoid level...

The marbles used to be silver and got "painted" this way by chemical process, too much time in a tumbler might polish the coating off entirely, which is my guess as to why he hasn't tried that yet.

    • @infin1ty850
      @infin1ty850 3 месяца назад

@@PromptedHawk I completely forgot he had to turn the black marbles "black". It has been a long series.
If I recall, he hot blued the marbles at first but found a more effecient way to do it and they aren't painted. As long as he doesn't over polish them he should actually be fine. I would take a batch of of silver and black balls and use a micrometer on them to see if there if there is a noticeable difference between the two before doing anything though.

It’s fun to think about the “rules” of this kind of challenge. The marbles in this design are still rolling under gravity a bit, but they are getting brute force moved quite a bit more than in the previous design.
If you go too far in the brute force direction then you could have a big wheel with ten matrices of marbles glued to it. The wheel rotates 1/10 of a turn every second and shows the matrix with the marbles for the corresponding digit.
But then the design isn’t using the fact that they are marbles at all, so that’s definitely against the rules, whatever the rules are!

Of course, you're going to need two of these, aren't you? One for each digit in the seconds counter of a clock (00-59) then you can mount it to your huge marble clock and have minutes and hours on that, so you end up with a full clock of hours, minutes, and seconds.

    • @DanielLamando

It sounds like this single digit will be the most complicated one in the whole clock. The tens-of-seconds digit only needs to refresh every 10 seconds so it could use a simpler mechanism. We'll have to wait and see what route he goes with :)

If you code it right, you just need alternating colors of marbles in each lane and only swap a marble if the next number has a different color in that specific pixel. That would remove a ton of movement from the system and allow for extremely lower noise operation. In fact that's the primary benefit of loading these from the back instead of the side. Each lane is isolated. (this could be made even sillier if you just have each lane have a closed loop that pops the other color marble back behind the one that was just replaced)

feels like this thing might obviate the need for a marble selection mechanism. since you can now gain control of the marbles leaving, just keep them on separate chutes like how they come into the matrix. roll them into another matrix that goes up and down every two seconds (controlled by the same cam maybe? at least connected to the same main gear...) and then let them roll back out and merge back into the queue for the matrix. Then you only need 150 marbles total, set them up to display the digits in order once, and you're done. Yes there are some more problems to solve with this, but it seems like it would require less energy and have fewer components that could fail in the end. No sensing parts, no selecting parts. Just marbles moving.

I'm not a mechanical engineer but saw a few uses in animation videos of bar linkage mechanisms. Your solution may be better for this in many ways, but what about things like a "Crank Rocker Four bar Mechanism" which does this oscillating movement. When I saw your oscillating plane, it immediately reminded me of these 4 bar linkage mechanisms that turn desk fans back and forth in old designs. The linkage idea can be used to create other movements too such as a tool to pick up something and place it elsewhere all by 1 rotational body such as on an assembly line. Any thoughts on using arm links to create necessary movements of things?

    • @ivanmirandawastaken

I've looked at four bar linkages and those follow a similar path to the eccentric wheel. The display would never be stationary

You're making this complicated just for youtube right? The most obvious solution to me would be to build a closed loop system that rotates 10 sets of marbles representing the numers 0 to 9. Show the set of marbles that represent digit 0, flush them so that the marbles representing 1 take their place while the 0-marbles get moved to the back of the queue again.
