The idea of the first protagonist becoming bitter and full of hate only for the current wide eyed protagonist to pull them back from the edge sounds like a VERY good idea. But alas.
Agree on your take with the story to an extent, but hurt by the fact AGE 2 and Asemu wasnt even addressed. Literally the best of AGE, even having the OVA movies featuring just his story arc lol
Only real thing I have to mention is that AGE did start as just plans to make a game but it was the president of Level 5 who, wanting to do more with the Gundam franchise, wrote out a full summary of a show which Bandai then saw and approved of. This ended up making the game be the secondary focus and it would even only be announced midway through the show airing, and release shortly before the show ended. Akihiro Hino (the president of Level 5) also ended up being the head writer for the show once it was underway.
Yeah the critique of “dUh De JuSt kEeP gEtTiNg In” makes no sense as this is a major plot point of every gundam. Not only that it’s the plot point of 79 and also occurred all over earth in 79 and 008th Ms. I mean war in the pocket is entirely predicated around a MS hidden on a colony? Is this guy just reading Wikipedia for his reviews?
When you have your plot predicated on the bad guys routinely coming in through the single screen door on the outside of the colony, it's a bad plot! In 0079 it happens only at the very beginning (and is built around the fact that the colony is supposedly innocuous), 0080 makes the smuggling part of the plot and very fraught, and in Zeta Quattro fights his way in. Mobile Suits emerging out of 10ft deep ponds in the middle of a city literally every episode because no one put a security cam on the single colony entrance is dumb as shit.
@@countpicula Do you know why we, for instance, make fun of the Colony Drop thing? It's not because it's dumb. It's because, for a time, they kept doing it. Over-reliance on a plot point no longer becomes surprising, and eventually, the audience starts asking questions -- like, "what the hell," for starters.
I know it's later into the series, but Vagans did infiltrate pretty high into the political ranks so who needs to sneak in when you can just have a few men let you in.
I think AGE needs to be seen by Gundam fans. Because it is both an example of 'good ideas, horrible execution' and a solid laundry list of problems, mistakes, to both avoid in the future and watch for in series. Plus, it's worth appreciating what other series get right where AGE stumbles on the same steps. In the end though, AGE needed to either be a game first, or be 3 full Seasons/Series unto themselves. It needed more time to develop properly.
I'm one of those people who like Gundam AGE. I think it's a nice alternative universe with some great suit designs. Yeah they sorta look like toys but past arc 1 they get really good imo. Asemu and Woolf are some of my favorite pilots of the gundam franchise. But I pretty much agree all your criticisms. The plot makes no sense what so ever and is ridiculous most of the time. But man I love those all out battle scenes between the EF and Vagans. It gives a really good sense of scale. Also the ova final battle between Asemu and Zeheardt is probably in my top 10 Gundam fights of all time.
Flit and Asuno were interesting to me, but Kio needed some work. I liked that Asuno wasn't an Xrounder like Flit, his motto was pretty much "effort can beat natural talent". I also liked the fact that Flit pretty much became a bitter man because of Yurin's death. Kio seemed incomplete like there wasn't anything special about him, hes pretty much fighting because war is bad, and gundam good. Maybe if he was turned into a young woman instead to remind Flit of what could have been if Yurin was alive, or better yet kill off one of the three protagonists. It would have made the show a bit better and more interesting towards the end.

My favorite thing about this was that one pilot (Obright?) who served on the ship through 2 of the generations. In his final sortie he absolutely wrecks one of the villain MS in his generic not-a-GM, getting to pass away and see his lost lover again. Straight up hero. And his wingman was named Jonathan like me, poor guy bought it in the same fight haha o7
Great video on AGE, ive never seen the series myself so this was a good intro for what the series is about. Seriously stoked to see what you have to say about the Build Fighters Series, considering it was an introduction to me for the Gundam Series!
I really should watch AGE again, I'm incredibly nostalgic towards it so my bias is immeasurable when it comes to gauging whether the series is good or not.
Gundam age has a concept that viewers would find trivial unless they take the time to think about Gundam wing -Endless waltz : war , peace and revolution all cycle in an endless waltz: this series had the same message but tried to show it in three different timelines constrained by 49 episodes ... Like the ambition but trying to tie three generations of war is going to need more than 49 episodes and the reality of the politics that caused war over three generations was left to be desired
I remember watching AGE as it was airing and disliking it. Now 10 years later I've mellowed out and accept it for what it is. Though i did like Asuno and his AG2/Darkhound are one of my favorite suits in general.
If AGE was a proper story game, it would make the most sense having 3 generations having their own game. Being an AGE trilogy game. I felt like then AGE would have delivered properly. Sigh...
I feel that Age was a condensed version of the UC Timeline (original Gundam -> zeta-> double zeta -> Char counterattack, Lead mobile suits show that). it could have worked but felt rushed and all over the place. The thing that bugged me the most was the disregard of the surviving side characters from the first two arcs, not even explain what happen to some of them between arcs, they just disappear!
I've not heard anything good about AGE, so not seen it and no plans to. BUT, I do find some of the mecha designs to be highly appealing. mostly the Vagen or w/e stuff, and I ADORE the Legilis, as it and the other units in it's line are nice looking suits. shame those designs, as well as the AGE 2 (and it's Dark Hound version) are wasted on this show.
Hearing that someone made a multi-generational timeline sci fi anime was incredible, that it was Gundam was even better, and that it managed to twist through a billion hoops to become bad was soul crushing.
I watched all of Age as it originally aired. I frequently forget that it ever existed. That pretty much sums up my opinion of it. It’s like how they say, the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. That’s pretty much how I feel about Age. It didn’t even leave enough of an impression for me to hate it. I remember things that I hate. Any time I’m reminded of Age, I’m just like, “oh yeah… that exists.”
"Sir wouldn't it make sense to organize a mass protest? Or if we result to terrorism, we could attack the Earth Militaries? Or make our plight known?" "Nah. Space Eugenics. Also pretend you're aliens and blow up some buildings."
Me and boy have only scratched the surface of gundam, but AGE along with build fighters try I think it was called were our favourites so far.... Nice and wholesome
Everyone does not hate this series I liked it come on lol but you have given me more insight. Actually this story sounds like chars counterattack I’m sorry my guy. Char literally wanted to do something very similar in chars counter attack. I guess I liked it because I played the game and didn’t watch the show lol
First 2 parts solid. 3rd part burn in hell it's somehow worse than SEED Destiny. Also the plot is a mix of Zone of the Enders and Martian Successor Nadesico plus Gundam.
Age has a pretty special place on my watch list. It was the anime that got me back into watching seasonal shows and I really enjoyed the generations concept it had. Too bad Age 3 and the ending were kinda wasted. Age 2 was flawed but it was still enjoyable.
That is the fastest I have ever gone from "wow that's an awesome concept I am super interested and would like to watch it" to "whoever made this needs to be physically prevented from creating media ever again", holy hell.
I kinda liked it. Premise was interesting and it was the first time I saw mobile suits and characters progress over a series in a continuous fashion. It was nice to see the interesting mobile suit designs used again in Gundam Build Divers and other series. They were pretty neat.
I wanted so bad to like AGE after I went back to watch it in its entirety, and the only part actually worth watching is the Part 2 movies, because Asemu is an actually compelling character who has realistic struggles in a series full of space Demi-gods
I gave this a like and recommended to my friends even though i liked age, and kio, and even tho you insulted my gundam honor >:( Jk thanks for the vids. You may have not liked age but I'm glad you still talked about it
Going with the built fighter theme: Built fighters aünd try have the best overall ost compared to all other series, including Unicorn, and that means something for a guy to say that who would die on the hill tha0t is unicorn. Fight me.
I agree with you about this series mate. This series have interesting idea the anime means well but the way it handle is different then normal . The reason the anime feels like a video game and the pacing is here and there. Is due to the director of Age is a Video game developer/designer if I remember correctly. So he'd uses the knowledge and techniques from video games to anime which of course it doesn't work. Also build fighters Yaaaaaaaaaaaa
I'll give AGE this, the mechanical design work is clean af. The Gundams in particular, I find to be a perfect marriage of the traditionally angular and and blocky aesthetic of older shows, merged with the contemporary sleeker modern design philosophy, without being overly... sharp, I'd say?
Yeah i can see that. But man the technology they put in MG Age1 is pretty nice. It's an MG made for play. Plus the Age gundam designs are great. That's why Age 1 Titus was in Build Divers.
I remember finding this series fairly enjoyable but listening to this summary of the show makes me think that it might have been cause I was watching it at like 4am after staying up all night.
This seems like something that would just be fun dumb candy to watch and enjoy without thinking about too much, but as soon as you actually critically consider it, it just all falls apart.
Thank you! You saved me an afternoon. How the heck to they justify a war going on for that long? Was it just a bunch of shorter wars just happening like a decade or so apart?
Gundam AGE is the series the got me into gundam in the first place me being 7 at the time really like the plot conpair to other animation for kids less predictable atleast .
While I haven't seen the series, I do own the bluray of Memories of Eden & I love that compilation film. I also enjoy the designs of the mobile suits & the Gundams, minus some of the upgrades. Maybe one day I'll get around to watching the series.
AGE and G-Reco are probably the most forgot GUNDAM after Gunam-X series for me. Like Wing, Seed, and 00 both carved out their own places in the Fandom. But i think ultimately it's because of a combination of these shows trying something new and not being spectacular at it along with the lack of real legal options to watch outside of forking over money for a bluray
I'll gladly rewatch Gundam AGE any day over trying to get past episode 6 or actually finishing G no Reconguista. I actually enjoyed Gundam AGE more than Gundam Wing, at least I can follow what is actually going on.
I finished watching both AGE and Reconguista and IMO AGE is definitely much more enjoyable than Reconguista. AGE has its flaws but Reconguista is another level of bad.
The saddest thing is that Level 5 can do better than this. The same company also made Danball Senki, which is functionally a grounded yet really good Super Robot anime that compares favorably to the stuff you'd see in G Gundam. The mechs in that show may be toys, but the show is dead serious all the way through and absolutely worth watching. Danball Senki shows the company can make a good and serious story even in the mecha genre, but their Gundam series was... this. The Gundam AGE game is actually pretty fun at least.
An under rated show. The gundams are amazing the mobile suits are pretty cool and the HG line of kits are the best HGs ever created. They screwed up the English dub with aweful VO acting. Watch subbed. It's way better
@@xnflg3074 the HG kits are awesome. I'd start with the Age 1 Normal HG than the Age 2 Normal than the Age 3 Normal. After that get their variants. Each main gundam has two variants. Age 1 Normal has: Age 1 Titus and Age 1 Spallow. Age 2 Normal has: Age 2 Double Bullet and Age 2 Dark Hound Age 3 Normal has: Age 3 Fortress and Age 3 Orbital. All 9 of these are amazing kits
Even though the story telling is quite terrible. I still love the gundam design. I mean come on? The age 2 look like exia + kyrios. Who doesn't love that?! I love it
The upgrade of Age 1 were the worst, you would think with something with as much potential as age-1 system they wouldn't come up with two suits that are just discount Ultraman modes thank god the final upgrade for it is better
As a long time gundam fan, I liked AGE. Sure, some questionable writing decisions were made but there were a whole bunch of 'I see what you did there' moments in the story that I thought were pretty smart call backs to other gundam shows. I appreciate AGE as Gundam's most self-indulgent self-referencing show. The only real issue I had with the story was Kio becoming Kira. I understood him defending Ezelcant as a "he's definitely still a kid" moment but becoming hypocrite Kira is a bit much. I would have preferred if he had a bit of that at the start but stuff happens to make him adjust his stance to being a practical pacifist. As for the whole Vagan Gear Sid thing, yeah, that could have been utilized better if it wasn't rushed. I saw what they were going for but the approach could have been better. On a slightly more LEVEL-5 bend, I am a bit let down that you didn't mention Little Battler's Xperience (LBX) or Professor Layton in that list of things LEVEL-5 is known for.
I really enjoyed age for what it is and since I played the psp game, my enjoyment for the series got better (Kio is still my least favorite protagonist). The series as a whole might be a bit rushed and doesn't have enough story development, but to me it still overall better than G-reco which I think a complete mess from start to finish.
This series was a WILD watch week to week when it first aired. And by wild i mean crap. I think i lost interest mid 2nd generation arc and had to force myself to finish it later. (Actually with your clips from the 'FINAL BOSS' I don't remember that at all, so maybe i never did finish it.)
G Reconguista was a rushed mess, but it had so many interesting plot ideas and mech designs. If it had been spread across more episodes I think it would have been one of the gundam golden boys.
I was looking for reviews to watch to decide if I wanted to buy this on Blu-ray. I really liked the Gundam designs. And I liked the idea of long lost colonists attacking Earth to get revenge for being left for dead as part of a cover up. But everything about the plot was super f*cking dumb.
For future reference... If you ever say hackneyed out loud again.... It's not pronounced "hack-an-eyed" (like the eyes in your head). It's pronounced "hack-kneed" (like your knees).
More Gundam talkin' by yours truly: ruclips.net/p/PLaVQYuFaXnsxcRry42NI-ZXJ-CsfPBo8c
Knowing that AGE was suppose to be a game explains so much.
And with Level-5 developing it, it probably would've been a great game. That's the real tragedy of this whole thing.
It has a game on psp
It’s based on a game. Game came first
The idea of the first protagonist becoming bitter and full of hate only for the current wide eyed protagonist to pull them back from the edge sounds like a VERY good idea. But alas.
It should've been given way way more episodes. 49 is nowhere near enough especially when so much is filled with filler.
alas...
good idea. poor execution.
It's a shame too, the MS designs in AGE are really solid, especially the titular Gundam AGE line and their variants
They look like a combination of 00 and UC to me
I agree. I like the MS design a lot in this series compared to others. not over complicated and full of bs
Advanced Generation is my favourite Pokémon anime.
That’s gundam, not pokemon
Who saying Pokémon in a gundam video
Overall I agree on your take; however I will defend Age-2 to my last, that Asemu/Zeheart plot is golden. Too bad they also fluffed that in Age-3.
I suppose that’s the reason Age-2 got the OVA treatment, over any other arc.
Yeah true
Agree on your take with the story to an extent, but hurt by the fact AGE 2 and Asemu wasnt even addressed.
Literally the best of AGE, even having the OVA movies featuring just his story arc lol

An under rated show. The gundams are amazing the mobile suits are pretty cool and the HG line of kits are the best HGs ever created. They screwed up the English dub with aweful VO acting. Watch subbed. It's way better
Been wondering if these kits are good since the designs are really sick. Will pick up a few some time.
Age 2 Normal has: Age 2 Double Bullet and Age 2 Dark Hound
Age 3 Normal has: Age 3 Fortress and Age 3 Orbital.
All 9 of these are amazing kits
You forgot to add LBX! It was also made by level 5!
I love gundam age!!!!!^^
Ooh, Mobile Suit Yugioh is next?
Even though the story telling is quite terrible. I still love the gundam design. I mean come on? The age 2 look like exia + kyrios. Who doesn't love that?! I love it
More like OO and kyrios having a baby. And that baby was the Age 2.
that's strange. it's my favorite with 00
The upgrade of Age 1 were the worst, you would think with something with as much potential as age-1 system they wouldn't come up with two suits that are just discount Ultraman modes thank god the final upgrade for it is better
the second arc I liked, but all the other arcs are a challenge.
Okay, havent seen Age, but as a Inazuma 11 fan, i can easy see EVERY PLOT TWIST in this and how it doesnt translate at all into a mecha show lmao
Inazuma Eleven fans are a thing...?
I really enjoyed age for what it is and since I played the psp game, my enjoyment for the series got better (Kio is still my least favorite protagonist). The series as a whole might be a bit rushed and doesn't have enough story development, but to me it still overall better than G-reco which I think a complete mess from start to finish.
This series was a WILD watch week to week when it first aired. And by wild i mean crap. I think i lost interest mid 2nd generation arc and had to force myself to finish it later. (Actually with your clips from the 'FINAL BOSS' I don't remember that at all, so maybe i never did finish it.)
imma watch this shit just cuz u made this shit sound hella fkn funny
Looking forward for IBO.
This sounds like a video game summary
Wonder why
I liked some of the episodes that I watched
Gundam age, don’t watch it , just get the models cuz these designs are actually pretty good and the kits are designed well.
It's not the best gundam series, but definately not the worst. It's rewatchable and it has some good simple ms designs.
Perhaps a rework might work for the anime
Basically Code geass: Gundam chronicles
Do a video about IBO
In due time.
g reconguista enters the chat.
The Series Could have been Good, If they just let Flit fire the Nuke
