What is Reconguista in G? The Regild Century [Gundam Timelines]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 ноя 2024
- Gundam Reconguista in G is original Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino's likely final return to the director’s seat. G-Reco has an amazing style, and interesting ideas at its heart, but, as history has shown us, Tomino has a hard time balancing his vision with short run times. G-Reco has *issues*. Old Man Tomino's rickety last ride, this time on Gundam Timelines!

Really nice look into G reconguista, not on my favorites but it could certainly be a good watch if some things were fixed.
Btw are you checking the Post Disaster timeline any time soon?
What is your opinion on it now after the movies finished?
Watching G-Reco I never felt that any of the opposing sides really wanted to go to war. More like they were jockeying for power and influence, but kind of fell short of going full-blown war. Sure, there were some war mongers, but they felt more like they were pushing _existing_ conflicts instead of escalating into newer ones. G-Reco felt like a field trip where the main cast was going around trying to figure out everyone's problems and come up with a solution that could placate each faction in the best way possible with the resources and influence they had.
Felt the same way when the first few episodes came out which Kind of took me further out of the experience.
Yes, even the space cleaning scene is beautiful because even cumpa says seeing everyone working along gives him hope
I love fast Tomino, but that is because I understand Tominos writing well enough to fallow the intention of the writing. I can see the plotline even without the exposition because I have seen a bunch of Tomino stuff already. That is why I don't mind F91, my brain automatically fills in the blanks.
In other words, you know enough about his style that if handed a few paragraphs out outline, you'd fill in the blanks with a roughly 85%+ accurate portrayal of the results. Which is kind of cool, and kind of sad at the same time. (Cool you can do it, sad it's so predictable... or cool that it's consistent?)
I enjoyed G-Reco quite a lot, but it is worth acknowledging that while it does have a fair amount of depth if you look, it doesn't make looking particularly easy. I would say its biggest issue is conveyance, more than anything; it's not that there's nothing there, you just have to really go excavating to find it and it's never particularly clear how much is intended vs. accidental.
Could you offer some insight on the depth of the series? I think it could make my appreciate better the series
Ahhh, the Gundam series that everyone seemed like they're high all the time.
INCLUDING the writers.
The continuity is simple but there are two of them; For Tomino it's UC -> Turn A -> G-Reco but for Sunrise it's Everything -> Turn A. Tomino didn't watch G, Wing or X before making Turn A so the references to other shows in the Dark history are just references and nothing more. This is obviously doubly true for the other AU shows that came after Turn A. For Tomino the Dark History is metaphorical but for Sunrise it's literal.
Doesnt g reco make three?
I believed in Tomino's interpretation, really. It makes a lot more sense. Sunrise's interpretation is kinda too cheeky because they just throw in references from Gundam Multiverse.
Like seriously, there are references from Turn A, like the geography locations, sites, etc. Not to mention the technology, environment, rules, and circumstances of living in the G-Reco universe is kinda like a step up from Turn A. The development of weapons of mass destruction (Moonlight Butterfly and Photon Torpedo) were more likely stemmed from the research on the technology contained in the Turn A Gundam itself, considering the many feats it got.
I just wish they'd give the G-Reco suits the HGs they deserve instead of leaving them in the dust of 2014 kits that are engineered like 2008 kits. It was kinda cute that all of them had parts and/or decals that reacted to UV light, that was... cute, even though that thunder got stolen by almost every kit with any transparent pieces at all afterwards.
Would love a HG and a PG of em definitely
Bandai is sleeping on some many awesome suits because they can't mass replicate the inner frame. I would love an MG Asshimar but there's no way it would happen since they couldn't use part of the inner frame for other models.
@@RezaQin Here's my massive hot Gunpla take: inner frames in kits are overrated. As long as the finished kit is solid, posable, and featureful, what does it matter how much grey plastic is hidden under the armor plating?
As a result, I also think the RE/100 line is criminally underrated and the MG Age-1 is way better than people give it credit for
Can't speak on the narrative but the art design really is impeccable.
I genuinely think G Reco is a series that's worth giving a chance if you haven't already. But you have to know going in it's a show that gives you only as much as you put into it. It wants you to pay close attention, give it multiple viewings, and try to read between the lines. And this is intentional. Almost every character in G Reco is an irrational actor running on an incomplete picture of the situation, and acting in farcical ways because of it. And you are put in a similar spot, having to piece everything together with limited information, not entirely like trying to sort through the messes of real geo politics. But I genuinely believe it's absolutely worth it for the show's message, world building, and characters. It's not going to be for everybody but there's absolutely something there there that might be rewarding for you.
this is why it works so well for me. a lot of my favorite pieces of media are the ones that have a ton of room to think just think through them, and g-reco provides that more than maybe any other gundam due to the combination of solid worldbuilding but a ton of obfuscation of that solidity
Haven't seen G Reco but I do like how the G-Self is just kinda adorable?
Also regarding the Ivalicean timeline, since oyu did ask us about our thoughts on timeline shinanigans; FFTA's Ivalice happens after Vagrant story and is in the modernish day, with the magic book createing a false copy of the real ancient Ivalice over the world for all their benefit. FFTA2 is a slightly different magic book just straight up isekai'ing Luso into the past, roughly around the FF12 period but obviously after 12 itself. It does mean a LOT of supernatural races get extremely killed out as 12 transitions to FFT proper, and that's super fucked up, so I choose to believe they're just in hiding.
It's a quirk of the design I like a lot. In some shots it evokes a cute rabbit. In others, the horns can give off a more devilish vibe like the Barbatos. Just really depends on how it's being framed in the moment.
@@badwrongfun5541 Very charismatic little robot! It's great!
@@badwrongfun5541
I like to compare it to Kamen Rider Kuuga, with both giving off the perfect image of scrappy underdog kid characters. Big round eyes, thin frames, tons of charm.
I know I'm like a year late with this but I recall reading that the fantasy races started dying out as the result of an apocalypse or something? I like to think that it wasn't genocide, at the very least and that some of them did survive, and that some even left through the rift for greener pastures and made it to places like the 14 setting.
It's friggin gold, but like not like the 99.99% pure gold.
the fact that it takes place in a sequel timeline to uc is prolly the most interesting ground level aspect of it and i hope the movies add more to that part especially.
I think G-Reco is actually really beautiful, but much like Turn A I treat it sort of as a "congealing" point in timelines, and in a way separated from the other timelines in that fashion. G-Reco's strongest aspects in my humblest opinion is the STUNNING art work and animation. Like for all of its faults the art in this show is breath taking and worth the watch alone. The movies, as you said, have actually helped the story make a bit more sense.
Putting every other timeline that isn't Universal century timeline into the Correct century timeline is nearly impossible to do well and have it make sense without just saying the Turn-A kept disintegrating everything over and over again. But as a Turn A fan I have to say that I think if you did include G-Reco it would put the Universal century at the front because it has the closest technology to that of Turn A and that very first Turn-A would really kick start the other series.
reconguista in G is a strand-type anime
When G-reco came out, I remember the co-founder/former president of Gainax; Toshio Okada, after watching it, said something along the lines of: "G-reco is incomprehensible!" And, after watching the 1st & 2nd comp movies on gundaminfo, I wholeheartedly agree. Although the animation is fluid and the MS action is engaging. I can't wrap my head around how the nonsensical most of the characters are. Also, I always called the Rectens 'Simons' every time they appeared.
Huh, I think calling the movie compilation "incomprehensible" is a little bit much considering that there is many new scenes that is added to better explain the characters motivation and making the story flows better (the only thing that makes the movies close to being "incomprehensible" is the editing (and to a lesser extend pacing) which is a result of shoving five episodes worth of screen time into one movie, and even then it is still can be remedy by paying close attention.)
G reco does look very pretty, and I want to actually give it a watch myself.
The Build Divers episode....oh boy, when it gets to Re:Rise, that will be a trip.
I have never been able to get through G-Reco, primarily due to time but also due to a lack of investment. However, it has far and away my favorite mobile suit designs in the series. Really hope we get a MG G-Self one day.
cant believe has been almost 8 years, i had such hopes for this series, at least the old school vibes of the animation is nice i guess
Now I finally know why I had no idea what is going on in each episode, I keep getting more confused episode by episode. By the end of episode 26 it just left me daze and puzzled then just forgot all about it until now.
I love G-Reco. While it is alternately frustrating and confusing I enjoy the cast(and the absolutely gorgeous animation goes with saying) I always tell people that it will unfortunately require multiple watches to recognise where and when you're expected to intuit what and why people are doing that they're doing.
I don't think G-Reco is incomprehensible by any means on the first pass; the general motivations for the factions are generally grokkable if you pay attention. I just don't think those motivations tie super well to the actual events as they play out, or are especially interesting most of the time.
As an example: Megafauna going to Venus because they want to understand what's going on is understandable *in theory*- there's a connection between the Rayhuntons and Venus, there's a connection between the sudden taboo violations and Venus... but none of that really matters to or impacts the conflict itself. In practice, the plot needs them to go to Venus to meet the G-IT folks, rather than there being meaningful incentives for bailing to Venus.
Going to Venus doesn't accomplish anything other than 1. triggering the G-IT guys to go to Earth, something that they could have done at pretty much any point regardless of the Megafauna showing up, 2. let Tomino be fatalistic about Newtypes as a concept, and 3. explain who Cumpa is and why he broke the taboos, something that doesn't actually matter that much or impact the plot moving forward; he gets to get accidentally killed randomly after having very little bearing to the events that follow.
Different strokes for different folks!
@@ZorakGoesOn That's fair.
Still haven't watched this one. I'm finally getting around to after war Gundam X and have no clue when I'll start Reconguista...
I didn't even know there were compilation movies. Nice!
Gundam X is the best romance story in the series, enjoy.
Regardless of the worth of the series as a whole, I still love the majority of the mech designs and I think the Grimoire is my favorite grunt mech in all of Gundam.
So, I like G-Reco. Somehow, I managed to follow along enough to get was going on and why. I probably missed certain extremely small but important details but I got the gist of everything and I think that's good enough. Yes, it could have been better if say the number of episodes was larger but I enjoyed the show with what it had. I have yet to see the compilation movies but the things I really want to know is the actual technology the G-Self is based on because you know that each series there is some tech out there currently they decided to bring to the extreme logical point. The real life scientific underpinnings are what interests me the most in gundam and most of that is missing or just not available to english speakers which is a crying shame.
G-Reco always felt like a precursor to Turn A to me.
The uncle Gundam/Mobile Suit poster was amazing lol.
I'd have something to add if "it's kind of just a worse version of Turn A Gundam" wasn't a perfect summary of my thoughts.
The show is dizzying to watch, but definitely worth it for the visuals alone.
G-Reco has such a good soundtrack, it's a shame it doesn't get more love.
I think this being set in a future Universal Century makes more sense than the Black history of Turn-A.
My personal timeline headcanon is that G-Reco and Turn A are both prophecies received at some point during the Universal Century. Also, I really love Build Divers Re:Rise but hate the first show, kinda a reverse SEED situation.
Would G-Saviour be the third prophecy?
G-Reco units are one of my favourites, with G-Arcane fits the gundam stereotype more than G-Self. The story, however is a mess. There are sometimes some brilliant cutscenes. But trying to follow what is the story by itself without any exposition is rather hard
man I just want an MG of the G-Self
wait this video is out I saw you posting about it on twitter a bit ago and completely forgot LOL
Now I have to watch this show so I can watch this video. It is the ONLY Gundam series I have yet to see
Zorak posted another gundam vid, praise the Lord!
It's basically "you can't fight near or inside the church"
The very first scene of the very first episode, though... it's not even _in media res_ so much as throwing the viewer into the middle of an an attempted interception without so much as a two-second establishing shot. Who approved _that?!_
I remember this being the first gundam I tried after years of watching a gundam show and God damn I was so fucking lost that I dropped the series after episode 4.
I will watch the compilation movies .... :O
G-Reco is probably one of the most realistic anime I’ve ever seen, not because its story is grounded in reality but in that the whole thing genuinely feels like a real world political crisis with tons of red tape, wrangling with each other, different cultures clashing together, people discussing specific topics that they’re totally familiar with but you aren’t, etc. I can’t help but feel maybe the intent was to make the viewer feel just as lost and confused as someone who would step into this crazy world themselves, but who knows, this is Tomino after all
"Next time Build divers!"
oh god no... (Picard facepalm)
Well at least Re:Rise was good.
Idk About others opinions but as for me myself I grew up with the series of reconguista in g & builds
Reconguista is pretty entertaining and its good for teaching youngs
Instead of a Gundam series, we got a glance of a show it could be.
My personal experience with G-Reco. WTF IS GOING ON?!
"What the hell is going on?!" -- G-Reco in a nutshell 😂
I really like RecoG.
4:42 interesting... a portable toilet in a gundam
I really the design of g reco(it got the same designer fro eureka 7) but tomino probably was high on weed when he was writing the plot
G-Reco is an enigma
I think they already did a fantasy big robot anime I remember there was a cat girl in there 😂 but a modern Gundam Isekai sounds awesome
It was called the vision of escaflone
Also break blade was pretty good too I don't think the manga finished
Aura Battler Dubine is arguably the prototype for the modern Isekai and that’s a mecha series. It’s also made by Tomino
There should be a what if gundam where they just cut out the middle man and just make the mobile suit it's self sentient
@Power Alimin fuck
So basically do what Fate fans do, and treat the UC sequel series as branches of larger multiverse.
And this why my favorite version of G-Reco is the one in SRW X.
*Because the game made sense of this whole mess.*
As much as it could. But I've heard it said, and I agree, that Super Robot Wars makes most series more palatable. That being said even as a Gundam fanatic I STILL hated G-Recognista in X, with Buddy Complex coming in just a bit lower. All of their animations were just garbage, that stupid little pose the G does is just...ugh.
...rant off, sorry about that.
Ok I'm a bit lost in 5:50 where is the source of Tomino Stating that The Regild Century is a 1000 year Prequel to the Correct Century and Vise Versa? Because I want to know where did that quote from Tomino came from.
6:03 Doesn't light of life show that every series comes before u.c?
Me gusta Reconguista!
The second build diver gundam is a gundam mmo isekai anime.
What is your opinion on it now after the movies finished?
waiting for build divers soon
Hay alguna diferencia entre el anime y las peliculas ?
G-reco movies are much more better than TV series
I like G Reco
It has a muscle girl
10/10
Nice
i agree that its a worse version of turn A gundam, when i first watch G reco i can't help but thought "is tomino finally going senile?" cause the series is just totally weird with awful pacing that doesnt explain anything, but at least the girls are hot.
4:00 Who’s the muscle mommy?
Sounds like Moon Gundam
G Reco.
Animation: beautiful, breathtaking, best looking Gundam show ever made.
The writing, story, and characters….. not so much
Its so wierd to watch eureka 7 thats not eureka 7 😂
For the same experience with less Tomino and more body horror, try Xam'd.
G Reco was a better Turn A for me.
Unlike Turn A, it doesn't sound like Reco is anything worth hunting down. Also, much like with Age, it seems the problems with Reco are very similar to a lot of Seed's problems (stupid poorly thought out characters politicking around for equally poorly thought out reasons), though which one is the other turned to eleven remains to be seen.
...But forget all that, as here comes Build Divers! Here's kinda' hoping that you talk about Rerise separately, or at least give it its own section, as despite its _HUGE_ continuity umbilical cords to Divers, it's very much its own thing in terms of writing style and, frankly, quality.
Where is the next one
They said they will make a mg of the g self
gundam ghibli!
To hear that the movies somewhat fixed the pacing is surprising since I have watched the first 3 and am still lost. If I was asked about character motivations, I would not be able to explain.
Yo Zorak, do you still post in SA?
I think fans just skip g reco show to watch the g reco movies
>Preview for Divers
Oh boy. What a strangely bipolar series
all I remembered of this show was that damn big sis is hot
a Gunpla anime that combines mmos and isekais? so a gundam model hobbyist is isekaid into a mecha setting in a game, with a war going on and must use his model building skills to become a real mecha mechanic?
Space elevator? Amerian's? was Ace Combat inspired by this? 🤣
Does it have a dub ?
I can still tell you till now I dun understand whats the fight going on and just think they look cool only lol
So… what of the Post Disaster timeline?
Just saving my dessert for last. Besides, there's some tie-in stuff coming in early next year I'd like to get a sense of.
@@ZorakGoesOn
Personally, I’d like the see a sequel where Gjallarhorn has to deal with the consequence of letting Ride Mass live.
essencially a kid-friendly mechanicus form w40k
its turn A-gunadm with a little bit of eureka seven
i only learnt a bit about RG through Gundam & SRW games and it doesnt sound interesting. From SRX [i didnt finish the game], seems like the main guy Bellri betrayed his fraction because he is horny for pink hair princess and killed her boyfriend, and Mask really hates him. SPOILER: Later i learnt in Cross Rays pilot bios the guy and princess are blood related so that's weird. Bellri does have newtype potential though i'm not sure if he uses it in the show.
G-self seems more like newtype magic than tech. G-self Perfect Pack [in cross rays] is a very strong range unit but the way it attacks seems magical as well, it's Photon Torpedo & Omnidirectional Laser.
Can you talk about the alternative continuities within u.c? The original show, new translation, origins and thunderbolt are all their own things separate from the main u.c continuity
There's not much in the way of details on any distinctions between any UC spinoffs, and frankly, Sunrise keeps going back and forth on the topic. The original show vs the movies is an interesting point given that elements of both show up in later series, making them "both" canon despite their contradictions. Along like what I talked about with the Ivalice stuff, it's just all messy continuity, and Sunrise occasionally going "well we're not sure if IGLOO and Thunderbolt are main-line UC!" is pretty much whatever who cares.
@@ZorakGoesOn I think it’s that the Japanese have a different sense of continuity than the west. Remember the meaning of canon is Greek and it relates to the Bible, which is not really prevalent in Japan.
Do Gundam Build Fighter, Gundam Buikd Fighter Try, & Gundam Build Diver Timeline!
Idk of I should watch this one🤔
What's the wannabe unicorn in the cg ova?
I love Gundam very much. But Tomino's feels like a strange, strange man. I somehow feel disturb(or unease) watching his work. There is a lingering discomforting presence in every dialogue he wrote. Like even though it is thematically makes sense, no human would say it. A bizzare, strange style
The culprit that made me realize I felt this way is G-Reco. It is the distilled, pure, unsupervised and unchecked essence of Tomino. Now I cant even ignore the "Tomino-ness" moments in his other works and I hate it.
Does it means I am not a true Gundam connoisseur, who is here for the intricate space drama? Am I just a pleb who only wants to see giant robot fighting? Who fucking cares. I can like a concept without liking the original creator.s style. That's what I have done with Star Wars before and that's what i will do again.
Honestly Tomino lost me at CCA, or Chars Midlife Crisis as I call it. While his fatalism was abundantly clear in Zeta and from the points of ZZ that he joined up in, it just went off the rails in CCA, not to mention his weird justifications of turning Char back into a full villain with no real explanation ((Surprise! Now he has an army and a flagship! And a super advanced sports car...I mean mobile suit!)) just to force a fight between him and Amuro, something he'd largely moved past in Zeta.
The sad thing is, I think completely on its own and with no connection to the other Gundam series it would have been a fine real((Ish)) robot series. I think that coming directly off of the original MSG it would have made more sense as well, Char would have had more time to gather an army from the remnants and create his super suit and his motivations would have still largely been intact. Coming off of Zeta, however, it makes almost no sense, with the only thing potentially being Kamille being a vegetable which STILL doesn't really make sense, since he lost to Haman and her Zeonic forces at the same time. Its just...ugh...
But I think its okay to just like certain aspects or series or even just parts of a series. Its also okay to fall out of love with them as you delve deeper into the artists work, its understandable that gaining a deeper understanding could color how you view their earlier work.
A lot of it I would describe as characters talking "at" each other rather than with, and that it feels like they often shout in each others faces than actually talk.
@@palladiamorsdeus Because CCA wasn't supposed to coming off of Zeta, but it is an adaptation of a latter part of High-Streamer novel and Char's motivation and line of thought is explained in the first half (considering that the cross media storytelling is very common in Japan, it's not wrong in the slightest to consider High-Streamer to be a "true" sequel of Zeta.)
Even then, I think Zeta already gave plenty enough hints for viewer to draw a conclusion that by the latter half of Zeta Char's demon has already rear its ugly head (not to mention that if you pay close attention, Char's action in the first half doesn't always line up with what he's saying, suggesting that he's still can not completely overcome his demon like his word would suggest.)
And seriously, while I think Tomino has many faults calling his work "force" or "doesn't really make sense" without looking at the context of storytelling and production is very much unfair.
Does it a "Tomino-ness" though? When that kind of "weird" character interaction or dialogue is very much not out of place when compared to the anime in the late 70s to early 2000s.
@@kman2384 Actually it is. I have watched plenty of anime from the time period, and Tomino's shows are the only ones like this. The others, while different from how it is done nowadays, are till much more watchable and easy to listen to and follow than the way Tomino does it.
In fact, apart from the feeling, I also notice that Tomino's shows are much more exposition heavy than the contemporaries. While not JoJo levels, there is still a lot of Telling rather than Showing in his works. And given the popularity of his shows in the past, it might be a contributing factor to why modern anime dialogue is so full of exposition.
I feel most uc gundam would work better if they were their own continuity stop at counterattack and breack them off in their own time lines
A worse Turn-A... Ooof.
Divers isn't an Isaki. Re:raise is though, to an extent
It's almost as if I'm going to talk about both of them in the same video!
Yup still have no idea what this is about
I like to think of it like this:
the regild century is the culmination of the Universal century timeline
The correct century is a parallel dimension where everything merged in ways so weird that it became the black history
i kept hearing 'G-Reco gets good'
So I stuck with it hoping it would get better, instead all I got was a boring, not even half baked Gundam Plot that could have been good or least not boring, if it had been given more time. Ultimately I feel like this is gonna end up being one of those ones no one talks about, not cause it's a horrific shit show like SEED Destiny, but because the pacing is so fast that it ends up being 'inoffensively dull'.
G reco.. no care for me and is 1st gundam mc i do not care at all. but cool ms design..
Man this one was such a wet fart when it came out and it still stinks
To me this show was nothing but a giant slog to watch. It felt like I had to force myself through it.
I think one reason G-Reco can be such a chore is that it is very exposition heavy, constantly lobbing concepts and explanations at the viewer. Everything has to be described and characters state what they are doing or thinking, even during hectic scenes and even when it doesn't make sense to. There is simply a lot of telling and very little showing.
And then there is of course the dialogue where it feels like character are just talking at each other rather than with, on top of constant shifting of subjects and non sequiturs. And not helping matters is that it is trying to put focus on way too many characters all at once, causing none of them to really get enough.
And even with that crammed runtime so did it feel like the whole Venus arc was nothing but filler.
As for the G-Self, seriously that thing tanks any kind of engagement given how it seems to get new powers every other episode that is convenient at the moment only to be forgotten by the next. Hell, it takes until the final episode until it even get's scratched, let alone damaged. And speaking of engagement, a lot of conflict in the show feels like it is just there for the sake of of it. Just some random stuff to have some pretty beams to fill some episode quota.
And I feel like I don't even have to mention just how little sense the whole deal around the Kuntala makes.
When it comes to Tomino, I can see that he has decent ideas, but for whatever reasons the execution of those ideas rarely if ever work out. Most of his work I just find passable at the best of times. And boy, the dialogue in his works for some reason always tends to be horrendous. I don't know what it is with it, but characters always sound annoying, even when played by actors I know are good.
