Thank you to you and all the people behind the scenes making this all possible. It’s a ton of work I’m sure and I highly appreciate it.

You are my favorite emulation tutorial dude on the internet. Thanks for making every thing so clear and easy!

Wow, didnt even realized it got so easy. Thank you for the guide
This guide was so easy to follow, and the results are beautiful. Thank you so much dude!

False there’s no gamer13 app anywhere🤣🤣🤣
Thanks man this was so much easier than I had expected it to be. Appreciate the easy and informative tutorial.
Thank you so much for this guide. I’ve been having issues with my wireless Xbox controller on PC when using emulators, so this is much appreciated.
Thank you so much! Discord wasnt hard to get working! Its amazing how fast and quick you can be up and running with this!!
The fact I was able to play Time Crises 2 with my guncon again on the Xbox Series X is a dream come true... Retro Arch and the other emulators available is what keeps classic gaming alive. Thank you to all of you
Where do i download games from
Does this work with PC games as well???
How did you manage to get Guncon games to work when guncon only works on CRT screens?

The term keeping it alive is also illegal. Downloading ROMs is illegal. Emulation is illegal preservation for ROMs is not the same as being an archaeologist
Thanks ETA. Got it working flawlessly on the series s. Dev mode was a disaster for me.
Wow this is revolutionary. ETA does a great tutorial as usual, but this Gamer13 guy is a legend !!!
Hey dude I really appreciate this! I never thought it would be possible to emulate on the xbox, thank you so much!
Can't wait to try this out as I just scooped up the Holiday Deal Series S. I'm excited for further emulation potential. In particular Xemu or Cxbx would be amazing to have to get almost every Xbox game playable instead of just the much more limited Official Backwards Compatible titles, and have more games working than the original Xbox emulator on the 360.
everything was gone yesterday, the appstore said NOPE, but now it´s all available.
thx for your Work@Eta Prime👍👍
this is amazing, loved the capability to play all the emulators but switching back/forth between dev/retail mode took forever and so I never really dabbled in emulators on xbox much. This is PERFECT! love it, thanks for sharing

Man, this is awesome no need to mod your Xbox 😀. You we're going a little to fast when you was showing us how to setup RetroArch so i set the play back speed in 0.25x and tried to follow your instructions but i was laughing while setting up RetroArch 🤣
I've been using gamer13 and Doms builds for quite a while now. An absolute benifit to the community. Now we just need retro arch to support xemu and I'd be over the moon. Xbox is truly a great bit of kit. I've got moonlight running (also through gamer13) which means I can run my virtul pc and pc only title ls like Postal from my xbox... Even better connecting while I'm away via my android phone and a hotel screen was perfect. Beat that Ps5 ;)
You still need to DL ROMS correct to use them on the console?
Meh I'm still buying a laptop and installing steam is.
I get a free screen and it can be upgraded... Best of all..

Heads up retail status for Retro arch flycast and Doplpin are up and running in the discord.
No ps2 or psp, but you can just run those off Retroarch itself.
Great work good clean well explained work
I appreciate the guide with so much details.
Having played through all of Xenogears (60+ hours, Duckstation) on a Series X via retail retroarch, I can confirm Retroarch retail is totally worth more than just a novelty install or benchmark, since being able to play timeless classics on a modern system too often has its caveats otherwise. Even with a modern game in the same "series" coming out soon, the one modern console you can play the first game on is the one the most removed from its other games.
Hurry it won't last unfortunately 😔
@@heretotroll.9703 I will just play on PC so Microsoft isn't stopping anyone

And for those who don't like the Ozone user interface, go to settings, then scroll down to "user interface" and from there, go to "menu" then right click to "xmb" which mimics the PS3 xmb menu.

IMPORTANT Question: Have you been controlling your xbox internal space before and after playing Saturn and DC games from an usb drive?
When I tried retroarch on SS last year, I keep losing internal storage space and could never get that space back (even after deleting everything), I think it was some kind of bug with Retroarch when is loading the images from the usb.
Have you check before and after?
Thx in advance.
Wow that was really easy. I stopped what I was doing in my day to get this working and I'm so glad
Followed your instructions to the letter and surprisingly it was easy I got GC working. And i am only using. A 32gb flash drive it works well enough. But thankyou again
I did it! thanks for your tutorial.
Dude, you are AWESOME!!!
Thank you so much for this! I love emulation, I don't own a PC at the moment but I've managed to get my favorite GBA, NDS & 3DS emulators up and running on my android phone.
I recently picked up an Xbox series S & I will say this little console is a BEAST! I'm going to borrow a friend's laptop so I can get RetroArch up and running because I have quite a few GameCube games I've been dying to play again lol. The Xbox series S really is the best bang for you buck in gaming right now. Full access to the BEST Xbox games ever made from the last 20 years (when I signed into my Xbox live account I immediately had access to all the digital XB360 & XBOX ONE i'd purchased over the years) I will definitely be using this guide to install RetroArch ASAP 👍
youtube algorithm came though for once never knew this was a thing thanks for the video
worth noting that if you do not format the drive before doing this process you WILL NOT have access to the security tab LOL, trying it today though so excited!
I can't believe how ridiculously easy this is and it makes me wonder how long before this no longer works. Makes me want to run out and get a series X, but then the more I think about it; I already have many ways to play the games I wan't legitimately. Still; I am always happy to see these as it ensures game preservation at least from a user community level on official products.
you probably could add them to your account now and download them any time in the future.
It’s not the Apple ecosystem, you can chill
I have xbox insider and when I updated my system it disabled all of my emulators so whenever that build rolls out to public is prolly when they will no longer work. Hopefully someone figures out how to bypass when they do update. Edit***** I think @Gamr13 just updated it so U can access his app store again to redownload the apps because it was not working at the time of this post ans now it is. Horay!!!! The happiest i been in a while. 😆 Thank u so much Gamr13.
you don't need a Series X, the S performs just as good in terms of emulation and its available everywhere.
Any game that's 15 plus years old is fair game imo, that is a really long amount of time to make your money on a piece of software and it's kind of on you as a developer and publisher if you don't make it in that time frame.
I use the Xbox One for this, I enjoy playing the Dreamcast emulator on this, I can get it in a perfect 1080p30 with most of the games being supported with it and going back to the 32x I can get Star Wars Arcade running at a neat 60fps with some dips.
I love this content and I’m going to snag a Series S for my bigger and ambitious games as Dreamcast games with Windows CE do not run well and are incredibly choppy, even with frameskip.
How did you get the download app button to actually download app? I am stuck at a grey screen.

This is amazing! I installed the entire rom set for atomiswave, Naomi, and Cave using final burn neo. Games run flawlessly and generally up to 4K. I’m wondering if this works with the Sinden Lightgun? Would be awesome to play House of the dead on here
What size USB did you need
Lightguns generally don't work on modern (non-CRT) TVs unfortunately.
The Sinden Light guns are specifically designed for LCD TV's and work like a dream! If you have never used them, I would highly recommend picking up a pair. They work just as well as the guns on my Big Buck Hunter Pro arcade cab with a CRT in it.
Dont you get banned for this
Any tips for performance settings? I'm trying to play Wind Waker and the performance is a little jittery. Also, it set 16:9 but I'd rather play it in the original 4:3
You can open the menu in game and it will list core options for the running core, usually performance settings for cores are in there. Should be able to adjust resolution and ratio, as well as upscaling and other things. Be sure to save them after you find a good setup and they will auto load the next time you run that game/core.
When I click on "Download App" the Microsoft App Store opens but hangs on a blank screen, doing nothing. Is there a reason for this?
You gotta join the discord now
Installed this yesterday on my Xbox One S. It works very well although Gamecube games were quite laggy. Guess only a Series S or X would fix that. Still, I'm happy with what it does. Great video btw .
Need some help, I’ve plugged it in my Xbox but I can’t find drive d

Probably you have to configure some driver and core options to fix. Here I usually uses Directx 11 for nintendo emulators.

For gamecube games, change shaders to async ubershaders
Is there any notable difference in performance between the Series S and Series X with Retroarch? And is there a way to emulate the Sega Model 3 arcade games, or Sega Arcade Boards from later years (Especially the ones that never made it to consoles like Scud Race, Virtua Cop 3, Sega Race TV and Daytona USA 2)
If you're playing newer consoles then you can play at higher resolutions on Series X vs S. GameCube and Wii run at full 4K on the Series X
Unless you're trying to do 4k upscaling for wii games I doubt there will be any preformance impact
These emulator running on CPU, xbox series x and series s both have same CPU. So emulating performance should be same
I was thinking about getting a PS5, but nothing is backwards compatible except PS4. I think having retroarch on the Xbox Series S might make me want this console. I mean I can play new and old games in one spot. I know you can do this on PC, but I like the interface of consoles over going in folders to find stuff.
Hello this is fun to watch bro
That is cool this can be done very easily.
That permissions tips was huge I had issues with some chd not working on some cores and that little tip fixed it all! Don't know why it affects ISOs and CHDs more than zips but that permissions issue was causing me headaches all week.
This was a great tip! Can't believe none of the previous tutorials included this. I can finally run all my games off external storage.
@@romainkrtI know, I had a feeling it was permissions related. The logs all said permissions denied but I had permission set to everyone and full control. I had no clue about that all applications permission.
You can just use FAT32 and then you won’t have any permissions to set up at all. The only caveat with FAT32 is that individual files can’t be bigger than 4GB. Unless you have rom images larger than that, then you should be fine.
@@happyspaceinvader508 I have an 18 TB hard drive you have any idea how much space I would waste with Fat32? Besides Xbox uses NTFS by default, fat32 is slower and has tons of drawbacks like data corruption if not ejected correctly and limits on file sizes
@@teamgt1981 Yes… you would waste 16TB of space, as the maximum volume size supported by FAT32 is 2TB.
Awesome video! I was wondering where I would download the games files to play?
Great tutorial. This made it very easy for me to go through with Retroarch.
Do you think you would be able to make a PS2 setup tutorial? The whole thing with the bios is a mess, and it seems like nobody has done it via USB.
I second this! Would really appreciate a tutorial for a ps2 setup.
First you need to follow these instructions because the permissions instructions in this video are incomplete:
To setup your USB for RetroArch on Xbox you must first meet the following criteria:
- Your USB cannot be formatted for Xbox games
- You **must** have access to a Windows PC or Virtual Machine
==================================================
USB Setup Guide
1) Connect your USB drive to your PC, note that all data on the USB will be completely erased
2) Go to File Explorer and right click on your USB drive, click format and format your drive as NTFS, leave everything as default
3) When done, close the format box and right click your USB drive again in File Explorer and click Properties, after that, follow these steps:
Security Tab > Advanced > Add > Select Principal > Advanced > Find Now > All App Packages > Ok > Tick the Full Control box > Ok > Enable Inheritance.
Close all open windows, you're now ready to go and can use your USB for Xbox RetroArch.
Ps2:
Now make a folder on your usb called system, then make a pcsx2 folder inside of it. Then inside of the pcsx2 folder make a bios folder and put a ps2 bios in it. Lastly, in Retroarch’s directory settings, change system/bios to the system folder on your usb.
@@christianrosa2368 thank you for the instructions! I’ll try them out and let you know how I get on
@@christianrosa2368 Thanks, that might just work. However, won't that screw up other emulators (or even Retroarch itself) if I make that PCSX2 folder the sole system/bios directory for all of Retroarch?
No, as I stated above, you make a system folder first, then put the pcsx2 folder inside of it. Then set system/bios to the system folder you made. Any other bios you need (not all cores/consoles require them) will be put into the system folder as well.
Thanks for the video! Have you noticed any performance differences between running any games in dev mode versus retail mode? I thought I read when these emulators first were ported to the Xbox, that you get better performance in dev mode but wasn't sure how true that was.
No. Performance is the same.
@@christianrosa2368 awesome thanks!
Something I want to add, I own a series X and am on insiders program for console updates. I had a little bit of difficulty installing the store and retroarch. It would say installing but nothing would be downloading. I found if you go into your full library, find the store, press start, go down to manage game and add-ons, press A on the game and then click install it works.
I'm on the Series X and in the Alpha Skip Ahead program and when I click on download app, all I get is a gray screen. I've tried the suggestion @Talirar but no results.
@@theoriginaljrest did u solve the problem
@@nathfarnsworth9088 I did not. Would have been nice but I have a soft modded original xbox that has all my emulators on it. Would just have been nice to put it on the Series X.
Actually if the usb stick or disk is formatted from within the xbox as for "media usage" you can then connect it to the pc and load it with roms without having to change the permission principles. Also cause the xbox has gigabit Ethernet, you can easily transfer roms via network using durango ftp server on the xbox and any ftp client on the pc. Ok, but you don't mention some of the most essencial, important things ever created/implemented in the history of emulation: Runahead, Frame Delay and all the latency reduction tools found on RA.
I'd like to know how these tools perform on the XBSS/X compared to a PC, especially because they are heavily CPU dependant, but take advantage of GPU power when you consider GC, Wii, Dreamcast and PS2.
Valid points, but most people wont care or even know about these features and will just wanna play some classics on their series consoles :)

I set up my Series S yesterday ... watching today's vid showed me that I forgot the step of setting the permission for the thumb drive (~ 9:26) but I had no issues at all running the games.

I'm a bit lost on the windows part. Where do u download the games from? How?
The only question I have that wasn’t explained in the video was where did he get the games themselves to put them on his computer to put on the usb stick?
What I'd love is to be able to play certain PS2 games, and it would be especially cool if I could play by inserting the PS2 diskninto my Series X. Specifically, Ace Combat 4, 5, and Zero. Also, I have several Xbox 360 games that were never made back compatible that I'd love to play again.
Hey ETAPrime, what about installing themes for RetroArch, and which are the best themes to use on Xbox?
Was this video re-uploaded from yesterday?
I watched it yesterday and tried with my Xbox one (normal one) pretty Laggy, even PSP at 1x was terrible, I tried RA and PPSSPP
But it's weird I am using a 2012 Mac mini i7 quad core (Intel HD4000 GFX) with 16gb ram and stock 1TB HDD, and It plays all PSP at 2X, some PS2 at 2x, and some I have to adjust settings but really smooth most games, or at least a very playable experience at same or better than PS2 graphics.
But the XBOX was ABYSMAL, I used a 32 GB 3.0 USB, I don't know if it has low write speeds that resulted in this, could that be the issue?
No, the Jaguar CPU in the Xbox is Garbage!
Great video, will need to try this out soon. One question, does it also emulate PS3 and the original Xbox? There are some games I can no longer get ahold of for a reasonable price that I would like to play again.
hopefully someone figures out a way to run the OG xbox games this way, i know some OG xbox games can be played from the game pass or if you have certain disc, but this way will allow all OG xbox games to be ran especially for people with a series s without a disc drive

When I tried retroarch on SS last year, I keep losing internal storage space and could never get that space back (even after deleting everything), I think it was some kind of bug with Retroarch when is loading the images from the usb.
Have you check before and after?
Thx in advance
Brooooooooo this just make me want to get the series X even more. I was literally just telling my wife I want to get the GameCube, wii, Wii U , ps2 and ps3 and Xbox 360 to play all games I played as a child. I can’t wait!!!
This doesnt work. When I click the link on gamrs page, I see a store background and nothing happens. Seems like gamrs appstore is no longer there.
Wow this is great. Thanks to everyone involved.
Can’t seem to figure out how to get ps2 games to run. Followed everything step by step. GBA, GC,n64, ds all seem to run fine. But ps2 games don’t open when I try to use PSCX2. Any ideas?
Same problem here. Have bios, and rims. When I start game retroarch closes.
Same here
Same here PS2 doesn't work
Is this still working? For me it gets stuck at the App Store
Cool video ETA! I love my series x and I love retro gaming! This is the perfect combo! I do like to keep everything legit though so I’m wondering if there is any chance that Xbox would retaliate for someone installing this on their system🤔 I don’t wanna chance it considering how much series x is and how hard they are to get, unless there is like zero percent chance of anything happening by using this. Im not very tech savvy so I was hoping you could chime in and put my mind at ease lol. The only other thing I’d be concerned about is that somehow my account info could be hijacked by using this.
The emulators and their cores are completely legal and okay to have and use. When it comes to ROMs that's where it gets grey. If you have games that you used to make your own ROMs you're good to go, no copyright infringement there.
ETA PRIME YOU BEAUTIFUL PERSON, YOU. I just bought my wife a series s and have been looking for a way to mod it.
Unfortunately this has been blocked by Microsoft, the only way to do this now if with dev mode.
What if you already had it installed before they blocked it? Would I still work or did they remove the ability for those consoles to run it?
