  • The training was held at the Middlefork trailhead and organized as a series of mock missions performed with a training staff playing the role of the missing and or injured subjects. The Command post will comprise at least two communications vans and one tent to support the command staff and training staff. 5-6 ground teams comprised of at least 3 people each who will coordinate their positions and movements as well as patient care via VHF radio to the command vehicles.
The goal of this training is to help track and locate lost or injured hikers. To understand how radios are essential for emergency communication in “off-grid” areas or areas with no cellphone service. To observe and learn how KCSAR uses Icom Land Mobile radios to communicate between each team/unit. KCSAR mainly uses VHF analog because sometimes they are right on the edge of the signal coverage and digital communication, and they have P25 frequencies programmed in their radio as well.
There were 7010’s in the hands of some of the field teams, and many of the 4x4 logistics. There was also a wide range of F7510, F9511, F5061, F3161, A110, ID880H, and more scattered amongst the bunch.
