3:37 Tesla completely redesigned the Model S/X air suspension with the “Raven” update in 2019. This has significantly reduced road noise compared to earlier models. Still not “e-tron quiet”, though.
Ah the sweetness of a properly told story. The players (cars), the side stories (houses, insurance, rentals), the clues (noise, mileage, comfort, perceptions), and of course the protagonist and adversaries... nicely done. Recently got a 2017 model x 75D. Absolutely love it. We also have a model y. I actually prefer the x. But u can't beat the permanent magnetic motors that newer Tesla's had over the older induction motors.
It uses a permanent magnet motor up front to either power the car or regenerate energy under braking, with an induction electric motor in the back that engages when extra power is needed
Interesting comments about regen on the Audi. I’ve just bought a Ford Puma mild hybrid and the regen is very inconsistent. You might start on full regen but when the battery becomes full, the regen backs off and you find yourself suddenly having to go for the brakes. It’s a bit sketchy. Same thing if you want to overtake, you might or might not get electric assistance depending on the state of charge.
I think the comment about the Audi being a really Audi but that essentially it does not take advantage of the read capabilities of an EV I bang on...When I get in the eTron it feels like a good Audi but not amazing like I would expect an expensive EV to be.
I hate the Tesla drive assistance. In the ICE A7 if you set adaptive cruise control you can accelerate and then when you stop accelerating it drops back to the speed you set, the Tesla drops out if you accelerate. The Audi lane guidance steers the car but allows you to adjust the steering, if you adjust the line with a Tesla it drops out.

Good job James, pretty decent review for a Tesla fan boy. I think it must have felt good letting that out. I drove an e-tron about a year ago and was quite impressed, a very solid feel and not as huge or gimmicky as an X, thought that is certainly an impressive beast no doubt. I drove the etron right after I drove the I-pace, which was a kick. I felt that the e-tron was the nicest and most practical of the three but still too rich for my blood. Now the Y is on the scene, maybe just maybe the Goldilocks car. But stiff probably have to wait four or five years for a used one to hit my range of affordability if I want to retire at a young enough age to enjoy it. Its a hard luck life. I know a number of E-tron owners, and the one thing they all have in common is that their previous two cars (at least) were Audi's. So for them, they are just buying another high-end Audi that just happens to be electric. It's also a lot more efficient than whatever Audi they had before. Props to Audi for inspiring the brand loyalty though.
Thank you for the video, James - a very decisive and important advantage of the E-Tron compared to the EVs currently is the efficient fast charging at a high level (150kwh). No idea in which area you live, but even in Switzerland, where everything takes a little longer than usual, there are numerous fast CCS charging stations where you can recharge the E-Tron (like no other EV) in such a short time at a consistently high level to 80% - what a shame you don't mention this important point. Otherwise clear: to change a Tesla fanboy's mind/preferences (regardless of which EV) is practically an impossibility... haha
So I feel different than you on the Regen. I feel like when I'm on the highway, I would rather coast instead of instant slowdown, and then in town driving I'd rather have the instant braking. Great review tho
Indeed, which is why I think the ultimate driver's regen is one where the initial start regen value is set by the driver in the settings and then during a drive you can increase it or decrease it using paddles.

I LOVE auto regenerative braking in my Kona, although it's not as intelligent as the Audi's. If you let go of the accelerator and nothing is in front of you, it keeps rolling. makes sense. If there is a car in front of you or you're driving up to an intersection (in case of the Audi) it will regen. Makes perfect sense. I also think it's much more comfortable for the passengers. I hate Tesla's solution. Makes you not wanting to touch the brake. The e-Tro can also regen much stronger than any Tesla because if you hit the brake hard, you expect it to regen hard, but Teslas can only regen when you let go the accelerator and you wouldn't expect that it slams 'the brake' (with strong regen) in that case.
Not sure I follow your logic. It regens more because you expect it to? Why expect? I expect my car to do 0-60 in 2 seconds but it doesn’t happen. The whole point of 1 pedal driving is that you shouldn’t need to touch the brakes unless slowing down faster than normal.
@@SirHackaL0t. well, if a car is in front of you and you're going faster than it is, do you want to ram it? No. So auto regen adds regen when it detects a car in front of you. If there's no car, it assumes you don't want to lose speed if you're on 'no regen/sail' mode. Audi is cleverer, it looks at the map, i.E. if there's an intersection or a roundabout it will regen.
EVPaddy So when you lifting your foot off the accelerator you have no idea how much regen you might get depending on what the car decides? I’d rather have consistency. It doesn’t take long to adjust to one pedal driving.
@@SirHackaL0t. It just feels natural. If you lift your foot and you'd run into a car, you won't because the car regens... of course you can also use stronger regen but, as I said, I don't like that anymore. Passangers got sick.
EVPaddy You need to learn how to use an accelerator pedal? When you drive an olde ICE car and are following another vehicle do you modulate your right foot or abruptly take your foot off every time you need to slow slightly? It’s the same with an EV with regen. Just learn how to drive it properly.
James you didnt mention charging speed? I have had over 13 EV's since 2007 and including 3 Teslas- two model s and one model 3. I have just got a ETRON 55 and the charging speed is insane, close to 155kW to over 80% and even at 95% it still charges at 70kW- althoughEtron has 95kWh battery the useable is 85kWh and so it has a big top buffer and also very good thermal management- Richard Symonds of RSEV recently did a charging race with a tesla M3 LR at a non tesla charger and etron was quicker as Tesla have a lower charing curve. As the infrastructure hopefully improves and maybe tesla opens up all superchargers then this will be a great EV as you dont need to charge like ost EV's when battery at low SOC to get the high charging speeds.
Umm, that's a hard question. I prefer MY Model S, but in general I think the X is a fantastic vehicle, if you can afford it. I guess if I could have either to the same spec, I'd rather have the X... But then the S does look so good... Hard question
@@JamesCookeVlogs thanks James. I like the practicality of the X but I intend keeping my next car for maybe 10 years and the reliability of the X is a slight concern. There’s just more to go wrong which out of warranty could be very expensive.

Trying to think of something that is encouraging, but the emotional equivalent of "nothing to see here, just move along" If I can come up with something I'll let you know. Plans for the future?
Again, the Audi has only some 83.5 kWh usable. So if you charge it to 80% only, you're only using some 66 kWh… Also, regarding the slower acceleration… While EVs have instant torque and acceleration, just look how many driveshafts etc. Tesla has to replace under warranty. Probably Audi is trying to avoid that. Who told you you should only charge the Audi to 80% If you charge it to 100% you still have only some 85% real SOC. If you charge your Tesla to 90% of course you can charge the Audi to 100%! And another advantage to that approach (aside from faster charging) is that you will have NEDC range basically forever, whereas in your Tesla you only have NEDC range when it's brand new and only when you charge it to damaging 100% SOC.
The drive shaft issue was to do with rapid starts when the suspension is set to high which meant the angles were quite extreme. The firmware changed to auto lower the car if you are going to do a launch.
The overwhelming majority of squeaks and rattles in vehicles are due to the junk that people keep in their vehicles and have nothing whatsoever to do with the vehicle itself. Which is why mechanics can never find the source of the noise, because people tend to take their junk out of their vehicle before leaving it with the mechanic. Regarding tire noise, you can either have a good tire or a quiet tire, but you can't have both. My Model S is quieter than any ICE luxury car I've ever been in. People who say Teslas are noisy simply have no concept of how their brains process sound or the fact that the complete absence of most of the noises that ICE vehicles generate makes what small noises remain stand out much more. Even among EVs, the only other vehicle that is noticeably quieter than a Tesla (according to instrumented tests, not biased humans) is the Audi. There have been zero published handling tests of any Tesla other than the Model 3. Why? Because none of the traditional media want to lose the cash cow support of the ICE industry by admitting that they handle so much better than their ICE counterparts. There are definitely some things that Tesla needs to improve, incuding the issue with the Model S overheating during "spirited" driving and some of the controls that need to be instantly accessible such as headlights and air suspension ride height. But until other EVs come along that can actually compete with Teslas in every facet, there's no contest.
i’d have to say that my 60 plate BMW 320D ED was a lot quieter than my Model 3. The road noise is the issue. It just transmits into the cabin and the roads in Sussex are very rough as well as the concrete sections of the M25 which are very noisy.
Brexit means 'BREXIT'. It seems that you no longer have the privilege of a high-performance European car. AUDI is good for all its cars, except your car. 👯👯👯💃🕴💃👯👯👯

Anyone else think oh no another accident?
If you need advice about CSA contact me.
I bet that your mom loves having you so close by, but not as close as sharing the same house?
Yeah, we're still in the same house though, she is coming with me!
Luckily we are both fairly easy going 😁
@@JamesCookeVlogs That is really fantastic, James! I imagine that her house was pretty big for one person?
Engaging content as always. Obviously a bit of a change in situation for you, but you'll get through it and come out wiser and stronger 💪
@@SirHackaL0t. That's your perception, but instruments disagree.
Mark Haury Actually no, the BMW was quieter by a long way.
I could find one and test if that makes you feel better.
@@SirHackaL0t. I'll take science over anecdote any day.
Mark Haury Fair enough but I drove my BMW for 9 years before getting the Tesla.
I’ll find someone with a 320D ED and test the noise level.
So you are single now?
Brexit means 'BREXIT'.
It seems that you no longer have the privilege of a high-performance European car.
AUDI is good for all its cars, except your car. 👯👯👯💃🕴💃👯👯👯
Into is annoying with lame ass music. Also too long of an intro
Never trust a Tesla fan boy
