    Armament mentioned in the video is wrong, the Yak3 was never armed with 20mm canons in the wings : the russian doctrine for fighter aircrafts was to put all the armament in the nose in order to maximise precision by having all the armament focused on the same axis as the aircraft (this way you get rid of gun convergence problems). The yak3 had usually 2x12.7mm machine gun and one 20mm in the nose, but some russian pilots were known to have the 12.7mm removed from their aircraft in order to gain extra performance out of the plane.

    • @19Koty96
      @19Koty96 8 лет назад +6

      +Pvt. Garcia Exactly. Or their engineers could also fit a combination of three 20mm cannons in the nose (of the type B-20, not ShVAK). This combination was, afaik, used for the version P.

    I need to make a few comments...
    1. The Yak-3 was never armed with 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns. Early ones had a single 12.7 mm Berezin UBS in addition to the 20mm ShVAK. Later ones had one more Berezin MG added to that. The Yak-3P had 3 Berezin B-20 cannons, while the low volume VK-107 version could mount either two or three of these. The armament given in the video was put on the I-30, the forerunner of the Yak-3 series. No production Yak-1, 7, 9 or 3 that I know of had any sort of armament mounted in the wings from the factory.
    2. Stating that a given aircraft was 'better than plane X' is too generalised to be of any information value. I would prefer to hear that the Yak had a tighter turn radius than the Bf 109 and Fw 190, accelerated better, but had an inferior roll rate to the Focke Wulf, carried less armament and couldn't dive as well.
    3. The video footage is excellent!

      They were only 3 tactical rolls during ww2.
      ①Hit-and-run,②Dogfight,③LargeFormationTactics,
      ①was almost the only tactics Germans used.
      ThereFor, it's meaningless comparing other factors.
      "Me109, Bf110, Fw190, Me163, Me262, Ho229 they all hit-and-run"
      For①、Max.Speed and max.Altitude is the only important factor.
      The answer is, the Soviets didn't have any "Faster" fighters.
      (Excluding the Mig-3, which was a poor dogfighter)
      (The Yak was a poor fighter for this role)
      For②、"Weight/Power-Ratio" & "aspect ratio" is important
      So, both the Soviet La-5 & La-7 were better "dogfighters"
      than any German Fighters during ww2.
      Out-standing even in the world.
      For③、I'm lazy so you geeks should check ur self....lol
      Hayakubusa Ki43 Type1 fighter was the best for ③

      I know it's 7 years late, but you my friend are wrong, there were Yaks that had the 762,like the Yak 1 and other prototypes later given a proper name, also THERE WAS yaks with wing mounted 20s,but they were VERY rare and were not used by the Soviets, most were export to other countries which those countries put the additional 20mm on the wings
      And saying the plane is better at that alt is a fair thing to say, it literally means the plane is better at turning, climbing and energy retention

    What is missed in narration, is that Yak-3s were a lot lighter than most similar fighters of the time, around 2600 kilos fueled and armed.

      Well the Fw190 has only a few advantages over the Yak 3. Roll rate, dive speed/limit more firepower and ammo. Probably equal speed, maybe the Fw190 is slightly faster.

    • @VRichardsn
      @VRichardsn 9 лет назад

      *****
      Well, yes. You are quite correct when regarding the advantages of the Fw 190. My initial commented objected Mike´s one, because I found it rather harsh ("Fw 190 is nothing comparing to Yak-3"). Regarding the Fw 190 vs Yak-3 debate, the Yak-3 is truly a fearsome opponent at low altitude. From a personal perspective, I think I would prefer the Yakovlev´s fighter over the German one... However, if my Fw 190 is a D-9... then the edge is more noticeable and I would stick to Kurt Tank´s design.

    • @Burboss
      @Burboss 6 лет назад +2

      1 20 mm + 2 12.7 mm was more than enough to deal with any German aircraft on Eastern front. Yak-3s had nickname ""the Killer" for battle efficiency. La-5 variants had more robust airfames but were inferior to Yak 3 in turn fight.

    • @MDzmitry
      @MDzmitry 4 года назад +5

      Comparing them is problematic, since Yak-3 outperforms La-7 at 3 to 5km of altitude, but La-7 is basically faster = better for free hunters, meanwhile Yak-3 is an air superiority plane, made to fight and win in a certain square, saving ground units from attackers/bombers or protecting a squad of IL-2's. Veterans say Yaks were superior in defending attackers, what was the hardest and most important kind of task for a fighter

  • @DIREWOLFx75
    @DIREWOLFx75 Год назад +2

    No, the Yak 3 did NOT have two 7.62 machineguns.
    The PROTOTYPE for the plane did.
    The production aircraft started with one 12.7 UBS machinegun with a 2nd added from the 198th Yak-3 and onwards.
    It is also worth mentioning that having all its firepower concentrated in the nose made it far more effective, meaning that a 20mm+two UBS is a quite decent setup.
    Although the postwar P model switched those for a triplet of Berezin B20 20mm cannons, which was probably the most optimal weapon setup, especially as it was LIGHTER than the original, thanks to the B20s being almost absurdly light, while the previous standard 20mm cannon, the ShVAK was on the heavy side for a 20mm and yet still used the same ammo as the B20.
    And NO, it also did not have a 20mm in each wing, again, that was the prototype I-30.

Admittedly the aggregate deaths for the British / Commonwealth was much higher and much higher still for the French in WW1. That is why we tend to think WW1 was so much worse ; in Britain . In reality WW2 was much worse in terms of human life in general . Ironically forced out of fighting further wars ( and reluctant ) post war the German and Japanese economies have thrived .

    It would appear to me that if this Yak 3 were fitted with a special High Horse Power Rolls Royce Merlin Engine like the Reno Unlimited P 51 Mustangs it would win the Unlimited Gold Race every time it entered. I know they have a Yak 11 in the Unlimited division called Czech Mate. This plane has a radial engine in it. I believe it is a P&W R2800. The old Soviet engine doesn't have much in the way of parts. Plus the Rolls engine would be way more powerful! Can you imagine 3000 HP in this little airplane! I know the currently flying Yak 3's have 1240 Hp Allison engines in them but the bigger Rolls would be killer! The P 51's are small compared to Rare Bear and the Hawker Sea Fury's that race in Reno and this Yak 3 is tiny compared to the P 51! Must be a reason no one has tried this?? Anyone have any answers or ideas?

      @@majorrgeek I'll correct. First of all, Yak-9 wasn't a modificaton of Yak-3, rather than Yak-7B, having bigger take-off weight, but also being a great basis for all sorts of modifications (weaponry, fuel, basic purpose, even bomb bay behind the pilot). Basically, Yak line divides from Yak-1 between Yak-1B and Yak-3 (light air superiority fighters) and Yak-7B and Yak-9 (heavier multitask easy-to-midify fighters).
      Also altitude where Yaks could perform their best was up to 3km for earlier modifications and up to 5km for later (Yak-9U was an exception, having altitude-friendly VK-107 engine, so it barely had altitude limits in performance for Eastern front's standarts)

      It's a 50/50 true statement. There is a moment in E. Savitskiy's practice as a commander when his pilots asked to change from Yaks to P-39, which Savitskiy saw as inferior to Yak-1 (having flown both of them). So he asked for the best pilot in the regiment to duel him in a P-39, while Savitskiy was in Yak-1. In a duel Yak-1 won, using mainly vertical maneuvers (where pilots thought P-39 had an upper hand).
      Both aircrafts showed their best in the hands of soviet pilots and served their purpose, that's what matters.

Standard engine is a Rolls-Royce Merlin, possibly manufactured under licence in the USA by Packard. There was a real USAAC P-51D within 380th FS, 363rd FG named "Fools Paradise IV" which carried A9 ahead of its national insignia as this does, so this looks to be a P-51D dressed up as it in its 'warpaint'.

    • @Nimori
      @Nimori 4 года назад

      Dmitriy Makutsa The Yak series had shoddy copies of allied engines made with impure metals and for some reason used forced closed cycle lubrication systems, which caused the engine to seize just before takeoff, or initial climb.
      Yaks were more dependable than Lagg’s and I-15/16’s and even IL-2’s; but they still were mechanically inferior and had a engine lifespan of about 6 flight hours before the pistons misalign and destroy the engine.
      When the lend lease P39’s came into service, the soviet pilots (especially the aces) stayed with then until the end of the war and beyond; because they were so reliable and were great at low altitudes.
      Yes, all aircraft have had mechanical failures due to lack of service; but soviet engineering/design was the main cause for the deaths of many young aviators.
      Though the Yak-3 may be the best soviet fighter in ww2; it certainly was no where near as good as other countries.
      The only upside to the Yak was it’s ability to turn tight at low speeds.

    • @MDzmitry
      @MDzmitry 4 года назад +1

      @@Nimori you're either the Mastermind of all engine engineering of WW2 period or a person who read the first article he found. In terms of flight hours even if you compare P-39 to Yak, the difference was that to stay competitive against german planes soviet pilots used WEP as much as they needed in P-39, what led to engines hardly ever working intended 100-120 hours.
      Apart from that, the only soviet ace that STAYED with P-39 was A. Pokryshkin, mainly because the idea of rearmament appeared right before the Berlin Operation. It was easy to understand that a division flying planes they have flown since 1943 is better than no division at all.
      The only country fitting your "impure metal" logic is Japan, having DB copies made out of metal worse than german and thus lasting way less.
      And what about soviet engineering - these people did wonders with what they had, creating competitive and easy to produce fighters. And what about young pilots? Yak fighters were focused on standart soviet pilot, having easy response and great overall control. Lavochkin fighters were harder in terms of landing because of stronger engine torque and P-39 was harder to control in air. Compared to Bf.109 or Spitfire, Yak was the same in terms of controls and easier to land or take off.

      @@Nimori here I'll translate and add up moments from N. G. Golosnikov's interview (veteran pilot, flew both Yaks and Aircobras), give me some time to translate, source will be sent too: www.airforce.ru/history/ww2/golodnikov/part3.htm
      "The engine was Allison. Powerful, but ...
      The engines on the Cobras were unreliable, especially on the first. This is for those English versions - Q-1, Q-2. They had a weaker engine. After the first 3-4 fights, all ten "cobras" had their engines out of order.
      These first "Allison" didn't work out even half of the resource. 50 hours was its limit, often even less. Usually 10-15 flights if in combat. Wedge, melted bearings.
      "
      " *A.S.* And about the yak and la fighters, what can you say?
      *N.G.* Yes, normal. I have not experienced any complexes about Soviet fighters. We had very nice crafts. I flew them, so I could compare. No, ours were no worse than the "Cobra".
      I flew most of the yaks right after the war, in parallel with the cobra. So I could compare. I flew the Yak-1B (we had one, for the division commander), Yak-7B, Yak-9.
      It was a very light Yak-1B, it was the fastest in acceleration dynamics, only the Yak-3 surpassed it. He was generally a "devil".
      Yak-7B, that was a little heavier, but I really liked it.
      The Yak-9 is heavy.
      In terms of aerodynamics and thrust-to-weight ratio, the Yakovlev machines were at the highest level, however, at the verge of construction strength."
      Another part of the interview (part 4): www.airforce.ru/history/ww2/golodnikov/part4.htm
      A really interesting question from the interview which I guess can put an end to our debate.
      *A.S.* Nikolai Gerasimovich, do you know that now many people consider the "yak" a mistake of the Soviet "Aviaprom"? The arguments are as follows:
      1. At all stages of the war, in terms of maximum speed, all types of "yak" were inferior to "Messers".
      2. Armament in terms of power was also inferior to most types of Bf-109, well, maybe, except for "F".
      There were other shortcomings, it burned well, was fragile and much more.
      Nowadays there is a popular opinion that the yak was produced only because Yakovlev was “well-known” to Stalin, was his main consultant in aircraft construction, which he used, and his fighter was mediocre in itself.
      *N.G.* It’s not true, the yaks were beautiful machines.
      I myself flew on them, and I knew many excellent pilots on "yaks" who fought, they spoke very well of them.
      You see, the yaks are unique in this - they are fighters with a very high combat speed. Yakovlev originally made a fighter, not just with a high maximum speed (as the aircraft designers were striving to do then), but with a high combat speed. I don’t know if it was intentionally conceived or happened by accident, but the “yak” turned out just like that. And throughout the war, the "yak" improved, first of all, towards an increase in combat speed.
      You see, if you take German vehicles, there are "Messer" or "Fokker", then their combat speed was below the maximum by 80-100 km / h. As far as I know, then the British and American aircraft, this difference in speed was similar. And this ratio of speeds for Western aircrafts remained throughout the war. For "yaks", this difference was 60-70 kilometers, and in the second half of the war even less. The Yaks were the most dynamic and lightest fighters in the Soviet Air Force, and therefore very good at vertical. Throughout the war, an ordinary, average, well-trained pilot on "yaks" fought with the "Messers" on equal terms. And already at the beginning of the war, the "yak" was the dream of any pilot.
      I'm not even talking about the Yak-3, which appeared in 1944, which was a unique fighter in terms of acceleration dynamics and thrust-to-weight ratio, and therefore in terms of combat speed. His difference between combat and maximum speeds was 40-50 kilometers. Probably, at that time, no country in the world had a fighter that could compete with it in terms of combat speed. The throttle response of the Yak-3 was amazing, and its maximum speed was not small, although it was not the fastest fighter in the world. Not the fastest, but in battle he caught up with any enemy, in almost any type of maneuver.
      In addition, the yaks were simple and cheap to manufacture, allowing them to be produced in very large quantities. You see, if there is a good fighter, but it cannot be produced in the quantities required in the war, then this is no longer a very good fighter. The simplicity and low cost of a combat aircraft to manufacture is almost as important a quality for war as its speed or maneuverability.

As such neither the Russians or Germans had a strategic bomber force that needing escort .

      A couple of days ago, I read an interview with Nikolay Gerasimovitch Golodnikov, Major General (Ret.) He stated that they were able to make a better use of the P-40 and the P-39 because they always demanded the maximum of the engines; he even goes on to state that a P-40 engine lasted them 50 hours at most, with 35 hours being common.

      The Russians did the bulk of the fighting mid 1941 -43 . So they needed every plane they could get . We did send them Spitfires later when we could spare them . It's possible they were a little delicate for their weather and terrain conditions . But certainly after that they began to produce their own planes that were certainly superior to P39 and P40 Yak 3 And 9 LA5 and La7 . I was reading A Russian aces biography a while ago Popkov I think . He was far from happy with the Hurricane but he loved the Yak . I think the most valuable thing the other allies sent to USSR was food trucks and other consumable such as guns and ammunition and fuel . Certainly our tanks were inferior except regarding radios and gunsights .and our 17 pounder was an exceptionally effective anti tank gun .

      Wrong, in real life Yak-3 could catch up to basically every prop fighter Germany had, check Lipfert's work, where his first fight with a single Yak-3 is legit terrifying

      @@MDzmitry Yes the yak3 was really fast below 3k equal to a G14 with the Mw50. I mean yak vk105pf the vk107 was never used on maximum potencial
