Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
2. What are you studying? I'm a recent grad of Yokohama National University's "Masters of Business Administration" Program
3. How old are you?: Year of the dragon. :D The math is up to you.
4. How did you get into Japanese school?: tinyurl.com/yb8...
5. What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 10 (with some help from photoshop). Additional cameras include GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI Majic Air

Omg I was so confused because I was like "girlfriend? Isn't she married?" but then I remembered some straight women call their friends "girlfriends" lol
My Showa is showing!
All the girls back in the 90s used to say it. i think most black girls still do also. only recently has the meaning started to get confusing.
@@kemushichan NSMSMSJ I thought the same thing 💀
I think it is a regional thing. I say my girlfriend and its common in New York.
@@kemushichan Haha no hard feelings or anything, just thought it was funny :)
Fun fact about the Japanese proverb in 3:55: it also exists in Indonesian (my native language)!
"Seperti padi, kian berisi kian merunduk"
_Literal translation:_ Just like a rice plant; the fuller it gets, the more it bows
Saya sangat suka orang indonesia! Saya dari Amerika
I love this 😍❤️
Was gonna say the same thing, you beat me to it :(
Please do more of these! It's great listening practice
I agree with Heidi! As someone trying to get more listening practice in I think this is great, getting to listen to conversational Japanese from two of my favourites! (Of course I've just started the video, since it was only uploaded five minutes ago.)
Edit: And I really appreciate you having the subtitles optional, so then maybe we can watch it with EN subs once and JP subs again.
Yeah! I know with a few recent videos a lot of people really wanted the chance to test their ears, so I'm hoping we can do that with these chat-style videos :).
Quick question, is the music distracting?
@@kemushichan Oh, to be honest I didn't even notice it, so I guess that's a no!
I got so excited when she started speaking in portuguese!!
Continue praticando, Ryo!!
Also, thank you so much for these videos, Kemushi! You're really an inspiration for me, I hope one day to speak nearly as good as you!
Love from Brazil :)
We miss Ryo and hope she is doing well!
What happened? I can't find her channel.
@@Sonasic I'm not sure. Went to check the channel one day and all the videos except one were gone.
@@breakpack yeah i saw that. Maybe she got tired of it because her videos were mostly around covid start .
@@breakpack she privated them
Leaving a comment in case someone replies with any updates
What happened with Ryo? I realized one day that she hasn't been active for quite awhile. So I visited her channel, only to find that she removed all of her community posts and videos (except for one), and the one video she still has up has the comments section turned off.
She just disappeared without giving a heads up. Regardless of whatever the reason may be, I at least hope she's doing okay.
Me too! I'm so sad!
Exactly! She got covid in january last january but recovered. It's like she don't want us to know what happened.
I loved this kind of chat!! I'm still in the intermediate-advanced level when it comes to Japan, and listening to this kind of natural conversation is great practice! I wish you could do more of these for sure
I am subscribed to her channel and it seems she has deleted many videos and the comments are deactivated. Hope Ryo is doing well!
THESE casual chats are AMAZING!!!! so real and so useful ❤️ PLEASE do MORE!!!

I'm missing Ryo :( Her channel is pretty inactive and most videos are hidden too. (._. ) I hope she's doing fine.
Don't forget to hit "CC" for Japanese subs! Also Indonesian (thanks to Flavyium), Portuguese (thanks to Tatiana Ribiero), German (thanks to Manuel Lamprecht), Spanish (LuisOre, Diana Davidson) and French subs (thanks to Kamiyu and DienaTalks) are now live!
Yay a fellow tall Asian lady! I was so shocked when Ryo chan said she's 181cm! Always been self-conscious about my height, it's reaffirming to know that there ARE other tall Asian womena round!
OMG! This is listening practice done right! I like how it's just so smooth and natural, literally like watchibg two friends have a casual chat in a coffee shop, and like most fun conversations, just one question can open up a myriad of equally interesting topics ❤️ Please make more of this, or better yet, make a different podcast channel! Thank you for this quality content! 🙏
This was great! More of these talks would be very much appreciated.
Ryo is awesome, glad you guys are friends.
Like, is Ryo pulling those books down from another dimension or something?
She just stands up, turns around, stretches up, and a book appears!
Seriously though, this was an interesting interview. Could watch for an hour straight~
That's just ブックオフ
@@kemushichan So she has a Book Off in her room! I was consistently curious what book she's going to bring you every time you asked (and she seems to have many books in her apartment).
@@TheSeeking2know 😂😂😂
I am become...sponge. Absorber of words.
I can't get this level of listening practice on the current apps I'm using. I love this channel.
Man I am definitely going to steal that "sponge, absorber of words" line for when I get the chance 😂 Totally agreed though, this channel is such a gem for immersion!
Same as @gmv12345 , I subscribe to Ryo's channel but most of the videos are gone, and the comments are disabled. What has happened? BTW, this is a great video!
Loretta, I've just checked out your first videos on youtube which dated 2007. I'm actually shocked 'cuz I always thought that Japanese takes that long for studying only in my case, but I found out that it takes more than 10 years for many people to reach an advanced level. I recognized myself in your videos 日本語の難しさ and I remember how I wanted to give up so many times when I couldn't pass N2. I passed it on my fourth try. My third try's general score was okay but there weren't enough 2 points in 読解 section. I'm 25 now and preparing for N1 with my italki teacher. I still have some issues with reading and hate it so much, but do my best. You give me the inspiration to try my best!
Sorry if I have any mistakes above, I'm not a native English speaker as well((
I definitely enjoy these type of videos! Make more! Also super super thankful for a full 25 mins of subtitles, I know it takes so long to do but it's so good!
Thank you!!! It literally took 6 hours just to write and timecode in the new system 😭.
Omg 6 hours I knew it was long but not that long 😭 you're a champ!
This was a great video. I started it not expecting to make the whole 25 mins, but it flies by. Super casual but educational and great listening practice, while still being fun, can’t wait for the next one 😊
Off to check out Ryo’s channel 😄
Loved this! You guys are so cute and have such a cute vibe. More of these please!
I've loved this casual chat type thing. Firstly Ryo-chan seems soooo nice and interesting. Secondly it's nice to just hear Japanese and even tho I don't speak any yet, when I start learning it will be great to test my listening with 💕💕
I find my Japanese skill so weird xD i can listen to a conversation like this and not struggle (there are few words i don't understand, but the same happens in English sometimes so lol context~) but if i was to have a conversation in Japanese i would struggle with the speaking part! i haven't gotten past the stage of thinking what i want to say in English and then translating it into the easiest/quickest Japanese i can think of...
I need speaking Practice. but i live in UK lol
I recommend apps like Hello Talk and Tandem to find language partners!
Italki is a great app for exactly that
Same it's bc u focus more on input (listening/reading) than output (speaking/writing) i also have this problem
Very useful to practice and you two are very easy to listen to!
What happened to Ryo-chan?
So, I watched your channel first, then Ryo's separately and eventually saw the collab vids suggestions. You guys have GREAT chemistry and should do a lot more together, 'cause all the vids were great!
This is the kind of stuff I always look for in podcasts, some casual chatter for listening practise 😁
Hey I just realised I didn't get any notification from ryo :3 channel so after searching her RUclips channel is there but most of her videos has been deleted. I watched every video of her but after April there's no activity. She has turned off comments so can't comment and I know she doesn't has any social media. Is she okay? 🥺🥺 Miss those lovely vlogs of her
Same here. Hope she is ok 🥺
This was so much fun! You guys mesh so well! Please do more videos together!
I like these casual chats 🤗❤
This is awesome!! This fluid and fun conversation is so helpful; my listening skills are improving! Thank you so much :D
I really like these conversation type videos!
So excited for this ^^
How did it go?
@@kemushichan It was really good ^^ I really enjoyed it! :D You inspire me so much to work harder with my Japanese studies ^^
Yeah these kinds of conversations are good for me to practice immersion. Thank you. I'll search for more to save
Ryo and Kemushi, I subscribe to both your channels. Loved this type of video. I listened first without subtitles and I can hear how clear you both talk. My Japanese is barely beginner so it was mostly to try to make words out. Please, more vids like this. Thanks.
love love these casual chats!❤❤
There's a Book Off in NYC! I haven't been there in a long time but now I want to go back. This was a fun chat!
I LOVE the NYC Bookoff!!! I was there all the time when I lived there and used to have meet ups where we'd go and pick out books before sitting down to share and chat in Bryant Park 😭❤️
@@kemushichan Ahh no way!! I would have totally loved that!
I really liked this type of content! You can invest more time in this genre of videos :)
Regards from Portugal!
More chats please!!! Love your videos!
I miss you so much beautiful gorgeous lady Ryo! Please come back😭 hope you are doing well.
it's definitely a rarer idiom, but i feel that's pretty close to
"heavy/uneasy is the head that wears the crown"
it's super Shakespearean for sure, and i think refers more to the responsibility and moreso the burden of power, but politeness could easily be substituted
oooo!!!!
@@kemushichan 渋いですよね :)
A more modern version of that phrase...
“Cost to be the boss”
Not exactly the same though... as that is less to do with knowledge and more to do with power and responsibility and the burdens of leadership.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT ! thank you both for the fun time and books recommendation. Please make more of those in japanese they are sooo helpful !! You both have beautiful energy and it was such a pleasure to watch you both to study some japanese and chill
that extremely faint background music is making me go insane lol
💀💀💀💀
I can't even hear it lol
I've been told it's often too loud...now it's too quiet?! *Explodes* 😂
@richzero0 lol yes, I didn't notice. Didn't bother me at all.
@@kemushichan I love the music in the back!
I loved this so much. Thank you!
Natsukashii kensai-ben! I lived in Hyogo-ken ten years ago (and Osaka 12 years ago). So nice to hear the dialect again!❤️ I agree with the other Heidi 😂, more of these please!🙇♀️
Heidiception....
I loveee this video! It helps a lot just to listen to you two talk. And if there's sth I can't understand I can just switch the subs on. I would love more videos like this
Coming up!
Definitely feeling these kind of videos! Lowkey wish I could join in sometimes haha but definitely keep making more like this 🙏🏾👌🏾
22:55 Maybe my country is not in her radar but I would caution her of using “querida” in a conversation in the Philippines 😇
24:23 Love this kind of videos! Thanks!!!
Hahaha you two are awesome together in your videos :D
Thank you!!!
2 year update video for this coming October? We'd love to see Ryo again!
Loretta and Ryo are Muito Queridas! Adorei a conversa. Portuguese is really hard, but so is Japanese, don't give up! As always, great video!
I love hearing you speaking in Japanese because I try to see how much I can understand. I miss having someone to casually chat with in Japanese.
Ryo chan is too cute and super-knowledgeable, please have her on more often!
Querido/Querida is also a Spanish word but we used it a bit differently. It can be translated to how "Dear" is used in English. For example "My dear mom"/ " Mi querida madre".
i LOVE THIS CHANNEL
There are BookOffs in the US, too. They're my favorite chain of 2nd hand bookstores. NYC and SoCal have them. IDK about other places.
I used to LIVE in the Bryant Park one 😭
Great video as aways!!!!
Ryu's portuguese i amazing, congrats from Brazil S2 S2 S2
Both your and Ryo's videos are so interesting each time! ^^ I LOVE both your personalities, and simultaneously I can practice a bit my Japanese listening skills. :D
Your chemistry is great!
I miss ryoooo:) where's her channel not able to find her anymore
Did Ryo delete most of her videos? :C
I love videos like this!! They’re very entertaining! Also great watching you speak Japanese 憧れのレベル😂
It's good to see smiles on your faces . Enjoy life to the fullest in a wise way through god. Much love muah.
このカジュアルチャット めちゃ好き、是非続けて下さい。
めちゃ嬉しいやん、ほとんどの話し分かった😁
よかった🥳🎊🎉🎊🎉
so nice that she is learning portugese my native language and I'm learning hers
Ryo is a total rockstar
Ok...
Many thanks for including subtitles and when you write kanji you use the hiragana characters above... So helpful, subbed and Ill learn from your channel.
ありがとう^^
The bubble era must've been crazy to have been a part of. I'd like to talk with people that were young adults during those times.
16:50 Ryo and I would get along well. I LOVE umeboshi. I regularly order it at the izakaya I go to weekly.
I love these casual talks, so I can practice my listening skills. XD Especially, hearing girls talk. Since I usually listen to comments or interviews of my favorite bands, I hear more male speech, so I sometimes talk very male-ish which is totally weird for a girl. I mean, I don't mind that much but I want to learn how to talk properly.
Right now, I'm preparing for N3 in December, so having some fun practices in between helps a lot. ^^
Amazing video as always!
Where did @ryo go to? Only one video on her channel.
Informative and fun. Yes, more please.

"To much who has been given, much is expected"? And I have that book Bushido in English (though I haven't read it yet; my husband did though).
Fun and educational, so keep the convos coming. How about a complementary podcast, by the way?
Love this channel from Philippines😘
I got so excited when it said girlfriend, but then I realized she just meant friend... and is married.
geez, I don't understand the need to turn everyone gay now.
@@duacoss I mistook what she said, and was surprised. Calm down ❄
All good in the hood, Sydney 😍❤️
Her Portuguese sounds so good 😊
That was a fun convo ^_^
渋い I think of as 'restrained' in English. Elegant, controlled.
Wow .. This is so cool ☺️
The Duning-Kruger effect kind of captures the meaning of the idiom.
すごくいい!勉強になった。😍
You are awesome
Posted only a couple mins ago, also your gf is sooo cute we love girls that totally geek over something and get super happy just talking about it
Hah I thought she was also her gf but it’s actually just her friend, she’s actually married lmao

Well Kemushi-Chan, I took your 日本語 listening comprehension test........and was utterly annihilated........thanks, I guess😓😓. Back to Benkyo for me lol.
Kudos on your Super Saiyan level of speed proficiency though, really impressive and inspirational to us Gaijin learning 日本語.
