Look back at Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan, and then at Clinton, Obama, and Biden. In many ways, Bernie Sanders would have been a moderate Republican 70 years ago. And yet, people don't seem to notice as the Republicans continue to... march to the right, which leaves the more sane REpublicans who do notice to leave and join the Democrats, which pushes the Democrats further to the right as well.
I almost spit my tea when she brought up Rush Limbaugh as a level headed conservative! That shows you just how far the insane right has moved the needle of what's considered the middle.
Well this woman thinks CNN and MSNBC are "the other side of the spectrum" from Fox. So if those are your only two poles, then you don't have much to work with in between. I mean Tucker worked for msnbc too. This woman just doesn't have a clue (to put it shortly, she's American)
My mother was a true independent who hated Rush Limbaugh and voted for Perot and Nader. After two years of spending not going out on her computer consuming propaganda she's now a full-on Tucker/Trump/anti-vax true believer. It's incredible
@@35mm21 I assume you mean she is "now" a Trump/antivax etc. Yeah the same goes for my mother. She hated Rush Limbaugh in the 90s when she was younger, but now in her late 60s she seems drawn to the anti-vax conspiracy theories. It's a shame because she used to love science and art and world events. She's not quite as bad as many of these people but they have definitely got to her.

I took lunch with a group of gun lovers for several years. They talked as if convinced Obama would send agents to their homes to confiscate their guns. One day I offered the following bet to my lunch-mates: If they have to surrender any of their weapons to a federal agent before Obama's tenure in the White House ends I will pay them $100 and if that does not happen they pay me the same amount. Nobody took the bet. In fact they acted like they hadn't even heard me and went on talking about Obama taking their guns. Hypocrisy exists at every level of the right wing.
Conspiracy theory culture requires a social contract between the members of that community. You agree to mindlessly believe and promote my BS if I agree to do the same for yours. I’d be surprised if those friends still spoke to you. Usually if you violate that contract they get angry.
I wish more folk understood this like you do. Too often I hear from Democrats or progressives about how the politicians on the right are so odious, but the people are great and should be respected and yada yada. That's why Clintons deplorables comment was so refreshing. She got it. They really are deplorable. It's like George Carlin said: The politicians don't fall from the sky. They ARE the people. It really is the best we (they) can do.
LBNLDC. That is absolutely appalling. It appears that your coworkers are actually aware that their own beliefs are complete BS... and they go ahead and believe them anyway. I'm not sure it is possible to overstate the damage that conservative media is doing to Americans' attachment to reality.
Yep, I know those blokes. As soon as those guys get down there and start running their big yappers we get down and take all their guns. All of them. We even take the safe. We even take the cookies.

Absolutely. He's been a plague to Western democracies like US, UK & Australia. Most continental Europeans see right through them, so they can't get a foothold.
As James said, it's the overton window. To people of the UK, Limbaugh would be seen as wildly right wing, whereas in the us where the window is skewed further right, he would be seen as merely right wing.
Twenty five years ago one of my friends said that FOX was the most dangerous thing facing the U.S. At that time I wasn’t familiar with the show but remembered her comment and over the decades culminating with the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol only proved how prescient her words were.

I had an old girlfriend that messaged me after her sister and husband passed away of covid. They moved to Florida because of the whole trumpian thing of denying covid. They both died. There were people dying of covid in hospitals that said it wasn't covid.
Because the thought was, if you don't test for COVID, then you can't prove they died of COVID. It was such a massively irresponsible method of dealing with it just to try to make the numbers match up to their ideology.
I dont remember Trump denying covid existed. He and even many liberals that are more centrist said it wasnt the pandemic others were pretending it was. People acting like its the end of the world. 1 million dead sounds horrendous over a period of 3 years but in a country of almost 400 million, 300k deaths a year is a drop in a bucket. Do I sound incensitive? Im not. Im realistic. I always find liberals I know who surprisingly are the only ones who know stories like this. Everytime a liberal wants to prove his point on COVID he drops the "my mom died, or i know 5 people who died'. Yet suspiciously I have a network of thousands of friends through my business and social media, I have not heard or known of one acquaintance even dying from COVID. Because thats how rare it is. And here you are claiming you know 2 of the 1 million. Give me a break!
Tucker loved using that dishonest rhetorical trick of putting his outlandish thoughts in the form of a question so he could say he was "just asking questions" (I call it JAQing off)
@@MattieBennett A proper cult trumper is almost impossible to interact with unless they agree to reel it in. Right now with my aunt I have to literally throw my hands up and say "no Trump" when she tries to steer the conversation down a My Pillow rabbit hole. Right now that works. It's not "just politics."
Oh im an American, ill help you with the translation. Our right wing is basically just missing the ss uniforms and a goose step to complete the transformation to being what everyone else can plainly see they are. So "right wing" is by and large "abiding disregard for humanity, liberty, and empathy". And "socialism" is when "any taxes help regular people"
Nope they certainly aren't. I'm a US citizen and politically independent. To them "socialist" means any time the government helps someone without expecting something in return, or any form of government regulation. That is a cardinal sin in the Republican playbook. So if the government provides someone a free vaccine, that's Socialism. If they suggest that new mine construction require an environmental impact study, Socialism. They use it to imply that such actions are moving us towards the soviet union model. In the US, left/right is primarily divided based upon what you think the role of government should be. The "right" essentially wants anarchy (no government intervention) but will take offense to calling it that (anarchy). The "left" wants a strong central government providing for its citizen's needs similar to how most in Europe are (state provided medical care and the like).
Also, generally speaking compared to most Europe nations, our "moderate left" is your "center". Your "far right" is our center. Our "far right" is more akin to the zealotry on display by folks like the Taliban or current Russia. Our "far left" would be your moderate left.
I have two adult children who haven’t spoken to me sense before the presidential election. They really took it to another level.. I MISS MY FAMILY! Trump , Fox and the lies. Destroyed our country and family bonds.
Same here, and we’re not even American. I’m a Brit living in Germany and my mum and younger brother live in Cyprus. My brother (almost 18 years younger) has always been a Trump supporter but when I previously visited them in Cyprus in 2019, I could still talk to him, even though we disagreed on politics. I wasn’t able to visit them during the pandemic, and made it back for the first time in March this year. My brother, in the meantime, has totally burrowed his way down the rabbit hole, talking about CRT being taught in schools, about grooming kids, etc. - the whole conspiracy theory insanity. We don’t get Fox News here, but he must’ve been watching online, because I heard Tucker Carlson’s voice coming from his PC speakers, along with some other RW podcast that kept talking about transgenderism being satanic. He talks to himself a lot, too, going on about these subjects, which shows that they are constantly on his mind. We got into a huge fight when he wagged his finger at me and accused me of being a p*** enabler and groomer because I’m politically on the left. A Cypriot friend of my mother told me that her sister also believes in all of those conspiracy theories and that they don’t talk to each other anymore. This insanity is dividing families around the world!
I’ve lost contact with my sister-in-law (my late brother’s widow) and my adult niece because of Trump and his terrible views. They went down the rabbit hole completely, attending rallies and what really upset me was my sister-in-law trying to tell us that my brother would be a Trumper when all of us know my brother would have hated Trump. My brother was quite liberal and was very much a live and let live kind of person. My sister-in-law, whom I would always have thought was quite intelligent and compassionate has shown a wide streak of racism and xenophobia. Has also become a science denier….anti masker, anti vaccine, believed that this was a one world order virus 🙄. Trump and his rhetoric really did huge damage to a large swathe of Americans.
@@patriciamillin-j3s Ironically it was the other way around for me...pre-pandemic I had started to avoid seeing my father because he had fallen down the AfD Rabbit hole. Thankfully the AfD's stance on Covid and later on the Ukraine mostly disenchanted him, and I guess he also was able to recognize that I was right about the danger Trump posed and the negative impact of Brexit (not that he would ever admit it). I am not quite sure where he stands by now exactly, because he is nowadays very keen on spending time with family and doesn't want to upset us, but at least it is possible to talk with him again.
As a British expat who left the UK in 1999, why is it that the only 'mainstream' news channels I feel comfortable with now are Al Jazeera and Deutsche Welle? Neither particularly mesh with my social democratic leanings, but they do at least seem refreshingly honest. Which is a rare trait these days.
english speaking media is a commodity that gets bought up fast these days. if you see something that seems fresh and honest its because they either have a genuine monetary backing with the idea to keep it honest or they just get paid more than the other competitors and put better quality content out there that makes you think these people are more honest than the other ones. you should be proud. your viewpoint and your actions that will be influenced by it are the most valuable for some reason these days, so people pay money to have an effect on it.
Sadly I have seen Al Jazeera become a little more like the more strident news channels and this is probably due to them catering to a large part of their viewership.
Do you ever watch MSNBC? Maddow? CNN is pretty bad with corporatism and fake centrism and turning right by the day but MSNBC is the best corporate news outlet for someone with social democratic leanings, al jazeera certainly doesn't jive with social democratic leanings.
I had a chat with a lady at my local supermarket in the UK who was convinced Corbyn wanted us all to be friends with ISIS. It's scary how propaganda, misinformation and buzzwords can convince people of something who don't pay much attention to the news.

As a behavior specialist, I've noticed that a lot of fox viewers are scared about something. Sort of like a get them before they get me mentality. It's like a fox fuels fear, that fear makes them do some crazy stuff, like shoot through a door instead of just saying hello. I wonder what they're scared of, it breaks my heart. People living in that type of anxiety, that type of fear that's not exactly living😢
There are many possible factors for that fear. I'd say two factors are "outcomes of neo-liberalism" and "late stage capitalism". Our society treats many people as cogs in a machine, opportunities for wealth extraction, suckers to be manipulated into consumerism and/or harvested for their donations to megachurches and to political causes. I dunno what life is like on Sentinel Island, but I'd bet long odds that it has nothing like Fox News.
In my experience, it boils down to few factors, depending on demographic. Poor white men have never benefited from this system and now see a black female vice president. Rich white men cant relenquish their hegemony (financial, racial, societal, gender) Yound black men absolutely refuse to launch and play the game [stay in their place] like thier grandfathers. Too much oppressiin has been exposed COINTELPRO, redlining etc Rich black men finally have a voice and apparently wont shut up about it Women in general are marrying less. Which means less reproductive access and more divorces for already unhappy men. Inflation, dying currency, bank runs/closures, opiod epidemic, lack of housing,... I mean with every economic downturn, there has always been race riots. Except now it all went super sayian lol
American here: I don't think people outside the US realize just how addicted a lot of people are to Fox and conservative news in general. There are people that wake up and turn on Fox as they get ready for work, then they get in the car and listen to conservative talk radio, then they get to the office and they might have talk radio on while they work and they might even have Fox running in the break room. They get more talk radio on the drive home, and when they get home, they either watch more Fox or go online to the plethora of conservative news sites. That's also not incliluding the clips that are on Facebook, Instagram, RUclips, etc. Some people have such a continuous stream of this stuff to the point that the only break is sleep and the bathroom.

The writing was on the wall for the Republican party when they had Sarah Palin as a running mate for McCain and then went birtherism and continued burrowing down the rabbit hole.
"...writing was on the wall..." Not sure how you got this. Republicans have INCREASED in power and influence ever since. They are running scared and using even more emotional appeals instead of facts, but that works for popular support. Democrats really need to step it up and start playing offense instead of letting Republicans lead the plays all the time.
I feel I have to believe that the GOP back then were basically 'just' a bit misogynistic; They wanted John McCain, an ancient white guy, but had to find someone who appealed to young people and women... and they found Palin, a young (by comparison) conservative governor from Alaska they imagined they could just ignore as VP. But reminded of Palin now... she was just illiterate, she didn't read anything called 'news'... now they have MTG and Boobie who only read things on Facebook while subscribing to Alex Jones and Tucker Carlson.
I had an old high school friend who lives in Alberta, Canada (Canada's "Texas"), and she was a perfectly normal person on her social media who worked as a pharmacist. She was a healthcare worker (Well, I guess she probably still is) and lived a very normal appearing life for decades. When Trump got into office, and later in the last couple of years when the whole "Convoy" debacle happened in Canada here, her social media SWIFTLY and SHARPLY changed. All her photos started showing her wearing SO much more makeup than she used to (The kind of makeup job you see on people like Tammy Fae Baker, and religious fundamentalists), she started wearing cowboy hats, and every post she put on her page wall was some whacked out conspiracy theory about the government coming after your savings, about some vast imaginary wave of Canadians that were fleeing to the safe haven of Florida to escape the 'rising fascism' in Canada..... she went full on bonkers. She wept in posts on her wall about how her own family had cut her off, and boasted about how she would never cut ties with anyone over a difference of opinions. She saw herself as the more a virtuous person in that way... I sat there, looking at month after month of insanity that she would post, until one day when she made a new post, citing her confusion over something or other (I can't remember at this point what it even was). In the post she made an active call for someone to explain it to her, if she was wrong, she wanted someone to prove it...... so normally while I would never jump on someone else's wall uninvited just to 'fact check'.... she 'did' put out an open invite to do so. I wrote one of the most eloquent pieces that I have ever conceived, and backed every point up with links to data, on government, and other official websites, that backed up every point I made. She never responded to me, and the next day she disappeared from my friend's list. These people can't be helped, and they alays turn out to be the exact person that they are accusing other people of becoming. It's sad that instead of decades of friendship, the only ay I ill ever see her now, is "that lunatic who was crying that she may have to sell her house and move to Florida because Canada was 'over'...". I feel sorry for her husband and kids. I blame the bubble of people she surrounded herself with.

Jordan Klepper described it pretty well recently. For a lot of people this has become "who they are." You can have a discussion about policies or data with someone who supports a party. If they consider it as their identity, you are attacking them and changing them and it won't work. I suspect the only way back is to talk to them about "who they are" right now and if that's who they want to be.

The Brits have Brexit tied around its neck. The tories are the equivalent of Republicans. At least we got rid of Trump and trying to claw back. Britain is buried for decades at minimum unless/until they return to the E.U.
I get it. My family is very conservative, and I’ve had to back away from them. They’re not total wingnuts thankfully, but they’ve done things like tested positive for COVID and taken their very young grandchildren (my niece and nephews) to Disney, refused vaccinations, and threatened to shoot anyone who tries to take their guns. Sadly, in today’s climate, that’s a pretty moderate view. A family friend believed that anyone who got the vaccine would die of AIDS within two years and refused to treat her husband’s diabetes with anything other than some miracle drops she bought off the Internet from a Christian faith healer. Her husband’s immune system tanked due to his out of control diabetes, and he died of COVID. And now the same Republicans that argued that they shouldn’t have to wear a mask because it was their body and their choice are systematically stripping women of their rights to abortion, even when it’s a matter of life or death.

When an American says ‘socialist’ or ‘on the right’, they don’t mean the same as our definitions, do they?
Oh im an American, ill help you with the translation. Our right wing is basically just missing the ss uniforms and a goose step to complete the transformation to being what everyone else can plainly see they are. So "right wing" is by and large "abiding disregard for humanity, liberty, and empathy". And "socialism" is when "any taxes help regular people"
No they absolutely don't. We have incorrect definitions because rich people create the dictionary.

I used to get AL Jazeera. I loved it. I'm so sorry they stopped broadcasting on American TV. I think they are still on RUclips.

You’re in the wrong era, Boomer. Perhaps you’ve been in a zinfandel coma for the past 20 years.
As an Albertan myself, I see this type of hysteria everywhere.
@Adam Zypsoul I'm confused. Do these people think the US government is coming for their guns? Or the Canadian government? As an American, it makes me feel bad that MAGAts have infected Canadians too. Sorry.
