Look back at Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan, and then at Clinton, Obama, and Biden. In many ways, Bernie Sanders would have been a moderate Republican 70 years ago. And yet, people don't seem to notice as the Republicans continue to... march to the right, which leaves the more sane REpublicans who do notice to leave and join the Democrats, which pushes the Democrats further to the right as well.

I took lunch with a group of gun lovers for several years. They talked as if convinced Obama would send agents to their homes to confiscate their guns. One day I offered the following bet to my lunch-mates: If they have to surrender any of their weapons to a federal agent before Obama's tenure in the White House ends I will pay them $100 and if that does not happen they pay me the same amount. Nobody took the bet. In fact they acted like they hadn't even heard me and went on talking about Obama taking their guns. Hypocrisy exists at every level of the right wing.

Nope they certainly aren't. I'm a US citizen and politically independent.
To them "socialist" means any time the government helps someone without expecting something in return, or any form of government regulation. That is a cardinal sin in the Republican playbook. So if the government provides someone a free vaccine, that's Socialism. If they suggest that new mine construction require an environmental impact study, Socialism. They use it to imply that such actions are moving us towards the soviet union model.
In the US, left/right is primarily divided based upon what you think the role of government should be. The "right" essentially wants anarchy (no government intervention) but will take offense to calling it that (anarchy). The "left" wants a strong central government providing for its citizen's needs similar to how most in Europe are (state provided medical care and the like).

My brother (almost 18 years younger) has always been a Trump supporter but when I previously visited them in Cyprus in 2019, I could still talk to him, even though we disagreed on politics. I wasn’t able to visit them during the pandemic, and made it back for the first time in March this year. My brother, in the meantime, has totally burrowed his way down the rabbit hole, talking about CRT being taught in schools, about grooming kids, etc. - the whole conspiracy theory insanity. We don’t get Fox News here, but he must’ve been watching online, because I heard Tucker Carlson’s voice coming from his PC speakers, along with some other RW podcast that kept talking about transgenderism being satanic. He talks to himself a lot, too, going on about these subjects, which shows that they are constantly on his mind. We got into a huge fight when he wagged his finger at me and accused me of being a p*** enabler and groomer because I’m politically on the left.
A Cypriot friend of my mother told me that her sister also believes in all of those conspiracy theories and that they don’t talk to each other anymore.

Our society treats many people as cogs in a machine, opportunities for wealth extraction, suckers to be manipulated into consumerism and/or harvested for their donations to megachurches and to political causes.

Poor white men have never benefited from this system and now see a black female vice president.
Rich white men cant relenquish their hegemony (financial, racial, societal, gender)
Yound black men absolutely refuse to launch and play the game [stay in their place] like thier grandfathers. Too much oppressiin has been exposed COINTELPRO, redlining etc
Rich black men finally have a voice and apparently wont shut up about it
Women in general are marrying less. Which means less reproductive access and more divorces for already unhappy men.
Inflation, dying currency, bank runs/closures, opiod epidemic, lack of housing,...

There are people that wake up and turn on Fox as they get ready for work, then they get in the car and listen to conservative talk radio, then they get to the office and they might have talk radio on while they work and they might even have Fox running in the break room. They get more talk radio on the drive home, and when they get home, they either watch more Fox or go online to the plethora of conservative news sites. I had an old high school friend who lives in Alberta, Canada (Canada's "Texas"), and she was a perfectly normal person on her social media who worked as a pharmacist. She was a healthcare worker (Well, I guess she probably still is) and lived a very normal appearing life for decades.
When Trump got into office, and later in the last couple of years when the whole "Convoy" debacle happened in Canada here, her social media SWIFTLY and SHARPLY changed. All her photos started showing her wearing SO much more makeup than she used to (The kind of makeup job you see on people like Tammy Fae Baker, and religious fundamentalists), she started wearing cowboy hats, and every post she put on her page wall was some whacked out conspiracy theory about the government coming after your savings, about some vast imaginary wave of Canadians that were fleeing to the safe haven of Florida to escape the 'rising fascism' in Canada..... she went full on bonkers.
She wept in posts on her wall about how her own family had cut her off, and boasted about how she would never cut ties with anyone over a difference of opinions. She saw herself as the more a virtuous person in that way...
I sat there, looking at month after month of insanity that she would post, until one day when she made a new post, citing her confusion over something or other (I can't remember at this point what it even was). In the post she made an active call for someone to explain it to her, if she was wrong, she wanted someone to prove it...... so normally while I would never jump on someone else's wall uninvited just to 'fact check'.... she 'did' put out an open invite to do so.
I wrote one of the most eloquent pieces that I have ever conceived, and backed every point up with links to data, on government, and other official websites, that backed up every point I made. She never responded to me, and the next day she disappeared from my friend's list.
These people can't be helped, and they alays turn out to be the exact person that they are accusing other people of becoming. It's sad that instead of decades of friendship, the only ay I ill ever see her now, is "that lunatic who was crying that she may have to sell her house and move to Florida because Canada was 'over'...". I feel sorry for her husband and kids. I blame the bubble of people she surrounded herself with.

But year after year, he has gotten more and more angry to the point that I told him last time I saw him that I fear for my life when I'm around him. That hurt his feelings a bit, because we love each other. But it's God's honest truth. When I go to visit, if I sense any anger rising, I make plans to sneak out of the house late at night. I've put a rooftop tent on my Jeep just so I can leave whenever I need to. I am scared to death of my parents.

I get it. My family is very conservative, and I’ve had to back away from them. They’re not total wingnuts thankfully, but they’ve done things like tested positive for COVID and taken their very young grandchildren (my niece and nephews) to Disney, refused vaccinations, and threatened to shoot anyone who tries to take their guns. Sadly, in today’s climate, that’s a pretty moderate view. A family friend believed that anyone who got the vaccine would die of AIDS within two years and refused to treat her husband’s diabetes with anything other than some miracle drops she bought off the Internet from a Christian faith healer. Her husband’s immune system tanked due to his out of control diabetes, and he died of COVID. And now the same Republicans that argued that they shouldn’t have to wear a mask because it was their body and their choice are systematically stripping women of their rights to abortion, even when it’s a matter of life or death.
