- 2023 BMW X1 review by The Straight Pipes. The BMW X1 xDrive 28i is putting down 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2L 4 cylinder turbo. At $54,235 CAD, would you take it over the Mercedes GLA, Mini Countryman, Mini Countryman JCW, Audi Q3?

The price in Canada is quite low. Here in Germany we are pretty fooled by the manufacturers, because here the same model costs the equivalent of 68900 Canadian dollars (47550 €)
Can't put a Canadian postal code into the link. Is there one where we can find the price for canadian vehicles?
Trying some new thumbnail ideas. Showing the time so you know not waste 30 mins on an X1 video. Hope you like Jakubs face in there. Still got the 3/4 rolling shot and logo
I like it. Keep it up!
Doesn't make much sense to put the video length in the thumbnail because it's already displayed in the bottom right corner
Ya but l wanna emphasize that you’re getting an all killer no filler From us
Thumbnail not so good 😆 great work on the video.
I think that the simplicity of the 2018-2019 thumbnails were perfection. For example look at the first gen GLA45 review.
They chose the dual clutch because the ZF is only for longitudinal use and not transverse use like this X1. However I do think they should've stuck on the 8 speed Aisin AW8F35 since that is meant for FWD Transverse use.
This was in the last gen x1 and it was completely fine. We had one for a bit but it's too small for a family.
@@cwx8 The Aisin was really good in the previous generation. I still have no idea why it’s not in this generation. My thought is maybe cost cutting.
That's what I was thinking, the reasoning why no ZF in this car. If they release an X1 m35i it will be a waste without the ZF.
the q3 has an 8 speed, but the gas mileage is not as good. BMW probbably wanted the best fuel economy because that’s what people in this segment want. They don’t care how the car drives.
@@running_rich The Aisin AW8F35 is the only option since it’s the only one for transverse use and the ZF is only meant for longitudinal use and not transverse for this X1 and other FWD BMWs have it but not this. The M135i and M235i Gran Coupe uses the Aisin 8 speed and its really good in those.
I got lost in virtual reality. I’ll see you all next week ruclips.net/video/-Ygk6B0XsaE/видео.html 0:51
hi
I've had my BMW X1 for two weeks now. I came from a 2015 GTI and wanted something a little larger. I looked at the X3 30i and M40i. Finally decided on this because of the size and handling, and loved the new design. I got a portimao blue with M-Sport package, Premium and Shadowline (US). In Personal mode, very sluggish and slow off the line. In Sport mode however, I love to drive this thing. It's night and day between the two. Hoping they do a M35i in this.
Coming from a VW hatch too. Mine should be here in two weeks!
I used to have 2014 X1. That was an awesome rear wheel biased suv. Really fun to drive. Not much after they switched to front wheel biased.
I own 14 now and I love it. Have no plans on switching.
@@IvanLitus You should try the X1 2023. You will not regret it. Some reviews are biased.
Fawk!!!!!!!
Even happier with my 2018 X1 after seeing this. Tried driving a dual clutch Hyundai once in daily suburban traffic and it drove me crazy. My transmission is great, power is fine, excellent hard buttons for basic functions, and combo iDrive wheel plus decent sized touch screen for various settings. I've even got power lumbar support! Best of all, the car has given me zero problems in 4+ years. No way I am changing to the new X1.
you guys are the best!!! I previously had an Alfa Romeo Stelvio on 20s. would you recommend 20s for this? will it significantly affect the ride quality you mentioned at the end of the vid?
You can hear a clear difference between a person talking about the X1 in America and Europe, sounds like two different cars. Tried the car in Sweden and it’s definitely the best small SUV out there.
aren't all bmw x1 made in the same location?
Do we get a rebate for buying the tuxmat with your link ? Thanks
You mentioned you had it in sport mode while testing the gearbox, however did you have the gearbox in S as well, did you pull the gear lever twice? First into drive and a second time to get it into S?
My X3 M40 lease is coming and had this one on the radar. But after your and savage geese review just going to buy out the X3. Good review.
Why would you even consider that over your X3m40i? It's like going from an m340i to a 230i. Less power less space.
Wise choice
@@avis1978 probably american
I have been considering this car, an upgrade to my 2014 Nissan, one of the main reason is the lag in acceleration after stopping. Guess I might be going with the Mercedes GLA instead. Where the lag isn’t an issue
Where’s Yuri man left him at grocery shop ?😂😂
watch the video before you comment bro
@@lemonone314 its a joke bro calm down
RUclips comment police showed up 😂
He clearly didn't watch the intro, how disrespectful 😂😂😂
@@exoticolors9953 I was joking you clam down 😂
Interesting, because the competitor, the GLA 250, also has a dual clutch transmission.
I drove this car for a week. It was cool! So high tech and nice looking car! Amazing experience. Didn't expect that from starting model
Try an older X1 and your opinión on this one will be that it is horrible
The los one drives way worse!
@@MrWhatauchever old X1s where great. I dont know what you mean, the old NA + torque converter 6 speed X1s where fast and sporty yet Quiet and smooth.
@@514aam Are you Talking about the E84? The F48 Never had an 6 Speed. The FWD Models already had the same DCT and the AWD an 8 Speed.
@@MrWhatauchever yep, the E84
I have a dct Skoda and I love it 👍 it can be jerky pulling off but if you're careful it's fine and smooth most of the time. But it excels at making the car feel relaxing to drive most of the time, and gets very good mpg on longer runs. Also I have no flappy paddles , you can just use the gear stick to bump up and down if you want. It's not a sports car like this it's just a chilled drive.
DCTs from Volkswagen are actually way worst then the BMW ones
Guys, your channel is fine without the stupid looking thumbnails being surprised and stuff. It's the quality of content that I and many people tune in for, not silly looking shocked face thumbnails that just makes it look a bit forced and grabby from your end.
You listened. Good on you guys. Keep up the great work!
Always listening to our subscribers
The 8 speed ZF is for longitudinal engined cars. The X1 is a transverse engined car so the ZF wouldn't work. They used to use an 8 Speed Aisin box in the previous X1, 1 series, etc but it's plagued with issues so they binned it
I wish manufacturers could make dual clutch transmissions less clunky! I had a Mercedes CLA and regretted buying solely because of how laggy and clunky the trans was. :(
Honestly, the new X1 looks fantastic! However, it is still a mini and the dual clutch thing is mind-boggling
My thoughts exactly! Front, side, back, everything looks perfect. Nice proportions, beautifully sculpted surfaces, no gimmicks. But the transmission and the front-biased setup make this a nonstarter. What a missed opportunity.
@@sojabub Drive it yourself…
@@sojabub I have one and I can also say this review can be biased. Go try one yourself. Even the X3 looks outdated in front of this one.
I think it's the best-looking SUV makes. The proportions are great and the interior is upscale considering its pricepoint. Give me one in Alpine White with a red interior
When's the M35i review coming!?
I saw this in a parking lot and thought it was the new CRV
This comment just made my morning hahahahahaha!!!
I thought the same thing too 😂
this
Oh looks like I’m not the only one😂
They’re all starting to look like that
Definitely the size of older x3’s now.
Why is this a 28i? I thought they went to 30i and 40i in like 2016. Is it now going back for some reason?
Would be nice if in your reviews you guys showed the rear cargo space with the seats up as well as the rear leg room.
We need to bring back the BOX TEST!!😂👏👏
I’ve a 36” leg seam on my trousers. With the front seat jamming my knees on the dash, sitting behind me my knees jam into the chair back. So there is the outer limit on leg room.
the dct isn't that slow in my a4. that is super slow off the line and very clunky for a act. my a4 is butter smooth and the off the line clutch slip isn't even half that bad.
just bought the x3 after the x1 launched in japan.
X3 has older platform but it's better than the new xdrive and looks. Same price -_-
My wife's 2022 Audi Q3 also has a 2.0 turbo 4 banger and 7 speed dual clutch S tronic gearbox. It's perfectly fine and smooth at low speeds and very quick in sport mode. Must be the box BMW chose.
The Volkswagen DCT is way worse then the BMW one
@@MrWhatauchever ok... we've had no issues at all. And I have a DCT in my S4 as well.
I have the previous gen x1 and it's great as a daily driver. It's the last of the 'analog' bmws. If you want lumbar support you have to go with the sport seats. The basic seats are no bueno.
Even Yuri was like “man I don’t wanna drive that shit”.
Always have the best intro music
I can understand why Yuri is sick because it looks very cold in Toronto ive been watching y'all for 4 years now so I hope you feel better soon
It’s really pretty, I work at bmw and it appears to be almost an identical size to the x3, just maybe an inch or two shorter
almost 9 inches shorter than current x3
How did you get this X1 with an all black rim? I know it wasn’t an option in the USA
Some sort of Winter Tire Pkg that the US doesnt get... I too liked the black rims
How long before BMW adds a subscription for paddle shifting?
I went with the Volvo XC40 instead. Thanks for the mention of Tuxmats!
There’s a lot of hesistation when flooring the car. I noticed that too. It’s like my CX 5 it doesn’t automatically go
that bass is hitting real nice in the intro music
Did you forget about the XC40 you reviewed? How do they compare?
Is that an American version ? Because the suspension and dampening sucks in the European version, it is super stiff and uncomfortable.
For anyone with this, it definitely needs a tune. Very different driving style even with a basic stage 1. Or get a X3.
Yeah a tune is not about power with this car but more of a general feel of driving! I got the 1.5L 3 cylinder B38 version of the previous generation. Its about 220-230 and drives amazingly well. Can keep up with new 330e's easily.
Needs a transmission tune more than anything
true and real. its not a sports car BUT that torque steer you get with a stage 2 tune is super fun and crazy nice to mess around with
A BMW shouldn't *need* a tune. Tunes should be for enhancement, not for correcting deficiencies from the factory, especially on a BMW.
@@DeuceDeuceBravo just don't buy it LAWL DUDE
I think the transmission may be better on the hybrid versions (i know, not an excuse for it succing in the normal version)
I love this transmission in the 120i sold in Europe. Fast af. It’s not clunky. If it’s in sportiest mode you fill that kick in the back. This is how it is programmed. No such effect when driving in comfort or eco pro mode. ZF is for longitudinal engines. No chance to get ZF for front based BMWs.
Did a test drive with this in a snow day in Ottawa, the interior is the best part. Doesn’t feel like an SUV but the older version of the 2 series wagon, I would say it is agile car to drive with plenty of room inside which really close to a X3. Speaking of the back seat room, the Chinese manufacture version will even all offer in long wheel-based. The worse part I can think of is the tail-light are really look like the new CRV since this model presented.
All of the negative comments….you all just sound like haters. Why take the time to leave a negative comment as if it brings any value??? I ordered mine in January and I can’t wait!
Because this is a car review not an advertisement
@@TheStraightPipes 🙄🙄🥱
This is my favourite colour 😍
Will get my x1 next week
Thank you. I'm sticking with my CX30 Turbo
I could be wrong, but a lot of cars with the 8-speed ZFs tend to have longitudinallly mounted engines. Maybe the transmission's packaging doesn't lend itself to transversely mounted engines.
With this new X1 i really hate they have removed the iDrive wheel in this one... even if I won't buy an X1 it still buggers me, because I do not want to see it happening to the other models in the future.
I do not need one and I do not miss it. I love that huge screen and HUD. So futuristic and so spacious.
Awesome review as always Jakub (and Yuri, even though he’s not in this video)!
It sucks that BMW totally screwed up the transmission of this X1. They may not be known for their reliability, but with that trade off they’re know for they’re excellent driving dynamics. Although, I have always loved the way their steering wheels are very thickly bolstered. I can’t stand when a car’s steering wheel is thin haha!
Who is Jake?
@@callebest sorry, I have a friend, Jacob, who I’ve always just referred to as jake lol. I typed it out of habit 🤦🏼♂️
I’ll accept Jakub and Jake and The Hammer. Don’t you dare call me Jacob though
Looks like the XM from the side and rear, you can def see the design language
Feel better Yuri!
Awesome fantabulous 😍 love from India
Could you please suggest whether bmw x7 40i m sports is better in subject of top speed and acceleration or the bmw x7 40d m sports
It's using the mini Cooper FWD drivetrain so no ZF which is rear drive based.
Excellent exterior color.
Washer fluid lasts a lot longer in Cali, where there's no salt.
does it have a console shift?
I went with the JCW Countryman. For $50K, it’s hard to beat if looking for hatchbacks/small SUVs that are fun to drive. X1 is still a decent choice, but that throttle lag is concerning. My JCW doesn’t have that at all, especially if in sport mode.
nice, countryman is the underrated winner
The gearbox issue might be a software fix to sort it, rather than anything physical?
They'll probably fix it over time probably. BMWs good about software updates for stuff like this.
They choose the dual clutch to show their customers the ZF 8 speed is a step above for the higher end models. The engine is already a detuned same engine as the one in X3 so if the driving characteristics are the same then it'll steal the sale away. Also, the new X3 is about 1-2 years away so they need to save some room to distinguish the difference. The dual clutch does offer superior gas mileage which a lot of reviewers out there missed, consider it has no mild hybrid, does 0-60 in 6 seconds, sporty drive, and still achieve over 30mpg on the highway. Overall, it accomplish what BMW wants: draw in the younger crowds and folks who never owned a BMW into the brand while still make the higher end models worthwhile for the enthusiasts.
That cut to Yuri stabbing at bad guys in VR 🤣
U r viewer again here in South Africa, with so slow response from LC its like u are launching it from EcoMode
Can you get a subscription for the paddles?
It seems cheaper in Ontario? They are selling 64k for similar option here in Edmonton
Dct without paddles what's the point
Everyone commenting how this looks like a CRV. I don't see it. CRV looks like a mix of the new CX-5 and trailblazer. None of which have kidney grills.
This is better than you guys doing together !!!
We bought a 2023 X1 and love it. Looks and drives amazingly. Haven't had any dual clutch/transmission issues he whines about.
Hope Yuri is feeling better.
Good review Jacob.
Oh, can't you get the X1 as electric in Canada? I assume if the iX1 was available it would've been worth a mention.
in the US and Canada, the 28i is the ONLY available engine... for now.
They can’t use the zf8 speed because it’s a REAR wheel drive transmission only. They had to use a front wheel drive transmission for this car. They could have used the zf9 speed or Toyotas 8 speed that everyone uses
Might want to try out the safety equipment. You know rear cross traffic alert, front emergency braking, etc. BMW decided that a quiet “thunk, thunk, …” was sufficient warning for immanent catastrophe.
By way of contrast, the car makes a high pitched “eek” when you leave and it automatically locks (whether you like it or not, carry your keys into the garage or you’re not getting into the car). If you do have your keys, the car will “eek” your approach as it automatically unlocks. Unnecessary in my view.
BTW, these safety features on the Toyota products really do warn you and include a display on the info screen that is unmistakable.
So BMW doesn't provide a spare tire to this car. Some of their other models did get a BMW air compressor. But now, by getting rid of auxiliary power outlets just to turn them into USB-C only outlets, means now you can't even plug in that air compressor to help you out when you need air up the tires. Maybe they have an air up tire subscription service now.
Does bmw mix brand with Landmark cinema?
On the cutaway to the continental tyre it shows a M0 marking on the tyre, that's normally a mercedes OEM fitment!
Is the ev version better ?
I kind of dont understand this segment. With how it looks and its driving feel, why not just get a well optioned out RAV4 or CRV. It honestly kind of looks like those anyways.
2:41 well the ZF 8HP is meant for vehicles with a longitudinal engine layout, which the X1 does not have
I was waiting for you to review this
So glad you finally received this car. I'm looking to buy one and I love the SP reviews. You guys are amazing!
Be sure to add the extra service and parts warranties. It sucks up front but any time you buy a BMW (or any luxury brand car) they very very quickly pay for themselves. I own an X2 so speaking from experience 😂
@@jonlaukeman1791 yeah I have a 2018 x1. Leaking Engine mount, brake rotor vibration, etc. maintenance program has paid for itself (I think). Also this thing chews through front tires. Hopefully the new one is better. That transmission would be a deal breaker for me, and I love the old version idrive system. The all-touchscreen controls in the new x1, hard pass
Worth my CTS-V3 trade in?
No lol
No way.
Thanks for the replies.....im approaching that mileage for a trade in
Is it required by law in Canada to always hold a Tim Hortons while talking to the camera ?😂
Wow, I didn't think I'd ever see flush door handles like that again on a brand new car these days (especially on a BMW). I haven't had a car like that since our 2001 Corolla 🤣
lol exactly 90s Corolla vibe
@thestraightpipes. Looks like the X1 is a big ball of meh.
I need purchase advice: X3 m40i with that sweet engine, or genesis gv70 3.5TT with gorgeous interior and stunning looks? Cannot decide.
Either one is great all around. I might go for the gv70 for a different experience - Jakub
We traded up from a 15' x1 to a 18' x3m40i in the summer and its been fantastic. Definitely a bigger car but the m package tightens everything up so much that it actually feels more agile. The engine is great, the sound never gets old and all the tech works well.
I Hope Your Partner Gets Well, Good Show. Keep Up the Good Works.
need to do a 2024 mustang gt review
My 2021 X1 is silky smooth. BTW it’s an AISIN transmission.
Yuri and Jakub - definitely greater than the sum of their parts.
good review thanks
the version we get in India is a whole different car
the Petrol is 137 bhp
and its front wheel drive
I think this compares more to the glb without the 3rd row and I think this is better.
Have the previous model, zf8 speed. M sport. And with a tune over 300hp. Hilariously good fun when it puts down power
Last one was a lot better some of the appearances of the new one are nice but still...
Nice and sweet! Good show!
I had an X1...I love my Mazda CX-30 Turbo way more.
Damn, when he said that he’s not use to not having Yuri during the continental tires but, I teared up😢
after owning manual cars for years and knowing where i am in the torque band, automatic cars scare me.. the lag in automatic/cvt transmissions is dangerous.
great review
how BMW gonna put a longitudinal transmisson in a transverse car? As far as i know they stuck with MINI dualclutch just because BMW don't have any transverse hydro.
Ya so the new intro music ... 👌🏾
