When I tightened the center on top it went snap then the entire shaft kept spinning with the bolt. Is that a problem or is it normal?

How were you able to locate that the noise was coming from the shock mounting?

Hi Douglas, thanks for supporting my channel with your visit, besides being a mechanic for 30+ years (relied on experience), I could hear a knocking sound coming from the front whenever I drove over a speed bump, I did the normal checks for tie rod end, cv joint, ball joint and lower control arm wear, but all was fine, only the top shock mountings were left to check and it turned out to be so.

I recently bought a high mileage volvo that makes a knocking sound when ever I start the engine or pull of from a stop. I'm thinking it could be one of the engine mountings. I have inspected suspension and all seems to be fine. What do you think?

According to your description, it sounds like the bottom brace bracket that is worn, it is attached to the lower part of the gearbox on one end and to the body on the other end it has rubber mouldings on each end which could be torn or worn, worth a visual inspection while jacked up in front. Gary
