  • We love the recent PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus - but tech details on the Bluepoint engine were somewhat thin on the ground. John decided to do something about it, hooking up with Bluepoint Games to discuss the technology behind the remake - and what's next for the studio. Oh, and how about a big bunch of 1080p60 video to back it all?

    This is probably the BEST remake/remaster I've ever seen. They really worked some magic here.

    • @Genkenaar
      @Genkenaar 6 лет назад +11

      It's basically also one of the first TRUE remakes released so far...
      Most of them are still just remasters where they try to pretend they're remakes. A remake is this, a completely new engine and built from the ground up. Not just a rehashed and slightly improved version, that's called a remaster, I wish developers would start using those terms correctly.
      I haven't touched my consoles in a while (basically turned into a 100% pc gamer), but I'm gonna be booting up my PS4 Pro again just for this game. :)

      Ratchet and Clank was a true remake. I don't think they used ANYTHING from the old game.

      microsoft put out the best collection of remakes ever with halo mcc. sony makes one remake and now they are looked at like big shit yet ms gears remake ,halo remake ,conker remake,halo 2 remake ,fable remake ,perfect dark remake etc etc all sony has ever done is half ass cash grab remasters but now they do one fucking remake and they are the shit lmfao

    • @TheHOOfan1
      @TheHOOfan1 6 лет назад +7

      The Gears remake was fantastic, but I wouldn't brag about the Halo remasters....the Master Chief Collection is considered pretty horrible by even Halo fans because of the multiplayer problems.

      Or better, a Remake of 1, and a Remaster of 2&3, sure, it would be better if they remake all of them, but that seems more reasonable. But Konami would never allocate the budget to something like that. They much rather continue with pachinko machines

      RAZKEN Nah, those game are perfect the way they are. Even the current PC versions of them don't feel right compared to PS2 even though they go up to 4K and look better.
      They were designed for the PS2, and even better if displayed on a CRT TV.
      I'd agree for the first one though.

    • @fenix_tx_1342
      @fenix_tx_1342 6 лет назад

      They are perfect the way they are, yes.... if you play them on a CRT TV using the PS2 version... It's not like a proper remaster using the PS2 version as a base would make every prior release disappear, you can always go back and play them.

    Bluepoint is truly a master of their trade. I've played hundreds of hours of their Titanfall "demake" on the Xbox 360. Their optimizations to get it up and running well on last gen hardware include pre-calculating visibility instead of raytracing, caching on hard disk so that the game can stream data in from both the hard disk cache and the game disc simultaneously, and baking the hundreds of different materials down to just a handful to simplify the render. They also had the great idea to optionally unlock the framerate, one of only a handful of 360 games I've seen that actually does this. All of this with no compromises on the number of players, Titans, or AI (with the exception of LTS minions).

      Yeah I must say it's pretty fucking amazing. PS3 remake was really lacking I thought, this is the real deal. It's all based upon the vision of the original PS2 game though, which has now been fully realized. It's fucking astonishing that they even attempted this on PS2 though and it turned out to be not only playable but was an instant classic.

    - God of War Ascension
    - God of War Chains of Olympus
    - God of War Ghost of Sparta

    - Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance
    - Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence
    - Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriot
    - Muramasa

    That's awesome to hear about compute shaders being used to render and even simulate the colossi fur. In reference to the base config current gen systems, Sony was really smart in making sure their GPU not only was more powerful but better equipped for compute & GPGPU, with extra ACUs. Horizon: Zero Dawn is still this gen's best example of GPGPU in action, and used creatively to boot.

      well today in an inteview with eurogamer it was stated that their next project(which they are already working on) will be a remastering project similar to SOTC in terms of graphical overhaul and engine work, but they are expanding their scale significantly from SOTC on this new project. I would wager that Demon's souls scale in terms of far more environments, enemies, assets, including server creation and network building would fit this to a T.
      I feel like it fits perfectly. Next year is the 10 year anniversary of Demon''s, they coincidentally cut off the servers to Demon's souls, which is not just any throw away game that is no longer being played, the huge amount of requests...
      Its really just me making assumptions, but i think their next project being Demon's Souls PS4 is probably the most likely project out of anything else they could do as an update to an already released game from years ago. Especially since Sony is the one that gives them the most work and they are the ones who own the IP, i'm sure they are looking to expand this partnership and make use of the segment of the Souls brand that they actually can make use of.

      Old comment I know but you're exactly right, I love how bluepoint does their remasters and remakes.
      Whatever project they do next (personally I hope it's Chrono Cross) I know it will almost certainly be fantastic.

      @@recklesflam1ngo968 dude a chrono cross remaster would be mental! Run the backgrounds through an AI upscaler and do some touchups to the 3D models.

    Interesting interview. Thank you for it.
    I wonder if Wander's lack of reactions and expressions as well as reduced hair physics might be related to performance. It's hard to believe though since they existed on PS2 and the remaster on PS3 too. I wish they'd say something about it and if they plan to reimplement it.

    I'm an huge of this studio, so much talented and passionate people! 😊
    I played and loved the HD versions of ICO & Shadow of the Colossus on PS3, then the Nathan Drake Collection on PS4, and this remake is next !!
    ... And i just can't wait to see a "personal" game from this guys 😁

    Now imagine what would they do to Metal Gear Solid 3, judging by the forest in SotC. Or maybe an horror game like Silent Hill 2, with photorealistic enviroments and characters, THAT would be scary

    I greatly appreciate everything Bluepoint games has done, ESPECIALLY for bringing Shadow Of The Colossus to PS4 in such an amazing way. They can remaster/remake every Playstation exclusive, ever, and I'll continue to buy them.

    Would be great I think if their follow up remaster was something like the Resistance trilogy. Since I doubt many played them, especially owners of 360's last gen

    Awesome interview! Just like the Horizon one, it lets you appreciate the dedication and hard work even more, than the stunning visuals by itself. And they always remind you, that optimization is key for a great product, not hyper mega hardware.

    This was a most interesting interview, even if I didn't understand most of the technicalities being discussed. This is definitely the best remaster/remake I've ever played, and that's saying a lot, because SOTC is one of my favourite games of all time, so the guys at Bluepoint had their work cut out for them, but it's safe to say they knocked it out of the park.
    The only nit I'd pick is that the default colour pallete is a little too saturated compared to the original game, but thankfully Bluepoint included a number of adjustable filters and I was able to tweak one in particular to make the games colour fit more in line with the original PS2's 'dustier' or 'subdued' visual tone. With that option available, it's a 10/10 without question.
    I have my fingers very tightly crossed that Bluepoint is working on a Demon's Souls remake as we speak.
