@@NicknLex I guess many just want those heavy guitar riffs, I get it. But the songwriting here is so strong, and they still rip through those complex bridges and changes, and the musicianship...stellar. Geddy sounds so good singing in his normal register instead of falsetto. If you haven't tried 90s stuff yet, some softer ballads there like Bravado feature a lot of great singing, less keyboards more guitar. Available Light is another interesting one, piano heavy ballad.

Pinnacle 80's Rush. They are absolutely at the top of their game here but it comes alive even more when you see them playing this live, if you can believe that. Quite possibly my all time favourite album from any band period. As much as I love early 70's Rush, it's the 80's synth fueled albums that brought the best out of them in my opinion.

[ I even have the original vinyl, but bought it again on cd ] This is a wonderful track which also needs to be heard live. Ironically, your back to back reactions matches my original Rush experience. After I caught the bug hearing a couple of their popular songs about 1989, I went out and bought two cassettes not knowing what to expect. I grabbed Fly By Night and Hold Your Fire because I like those album covers the best.
The listening sessions were just unbelievable. After absorbing the proto metal on Fly By Night and hearing how much they influenced the metal I was already into, I then moved to Holy Your Fire for this exquisite edgy pop immersion. This is the same band? I was NOT let down by Hold Your Fire, I was intrigued that they created a crypto-pop album sneaking in all of the prog and metal chops in between the cracks. Masters at work under all the synths. And lyrically more sublime and compelling than the typical love and breakup songs of pop. It was intense to me, nothing cheesy at all to my ears.

Force ten, Open secrets, Second nature, Prime mover, Lock & Key, Turn the page and Mission are great songs. I don't know how this album is so often at the bottom of people's album ranking. Take out the 2 last songs and remaster it and that is a great record. Vocals are on point, the song composition the musicianship is precise and cohesive and arrangements are stellar.... I don't get the hate.

I have always enjoyed the album. Not at the level of their 70's era, but it is still quite listenable. This one stood out right away.

I haven't listened to this song in a quite a while, I had forgotten that little prog section at 6:05-6:48 of this video. Great review as usual and I will always check out any Rush or Yes song you review and visit some of them repeatedly (like Gates of Delirium).

Wish you guys would visit more of Grace under pressure, Power windows, Hold tu our fire and Presto. There are some great pieces I. That era. One of my all time favourites is on Presto and it’s called Available light. Every reaction channel that has heard my request for that song has placed it in their top 10 Rush songs yet nobody reacts to it. Last song of the 80’s and they closed it with their absolute best !!! Check it out !!!

This is one of my favorite Rush songs. I love the lyrics and music! There is a great live version of this I recommend you watch, from 1988, Live in Birmingham. It's so fun to watch Geddy multi-task on keyboards, bass and vocals, and of course Alex's guitar solo is amazing.

For those of us who lived through the initial and progressive era of the band, it was a bit complex for us to adapt to the new sounds during the 80s, but we forgive everything to our favorite band.

Mission is an underrated gem. Definitely check out either "Fountain of Lamneth" or "The Necromancer" from their album Caress of Steel for a real deep dive. They're not the most popular songs but are fantastic journeys (inspired by Tolkien no less). #nicknlexrequest

Ok so I admitted I don’t revisit the album, but when they play these songs live I get a new appreciation for them. Was it the studio mix?! I dunno. PASTEL is the word people throw out there.
Remember I’m a huge Rush fan. Yay for echo = hold your fire part 2.

Nick & Lex I knew you would love this song. I Love it some much. Please react to Mission Live 1988. The song Chain Lightning on Presto 1989 album. Neil wrote this song after star gazing with his first daughter Selena in the beautiful Canadian skies. It has cool lyrics and a funky beat. ❤‍🔥

Actually, some of those "keyboard parts" are actually Alex's guitar. He's using a much cleaner tone on this album with active pickups. Combining that with piezo equipped acoustics ran direct and heavily processed being leyered with the clean electric parts make it nearly undecernible from the synths.

This album was the first NEW studio release from Rush after I had become a fan. I played the hell out of it when all other Rush fans were screaming for their career to just politely end. I stayed on. To this day , I never revisit this album. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
