Bathory Campaign, Dracula Reloaded, the seven sisters, the drymarian codex, keepers of the prophecies, a night in rocksbourg, and the scarlet cascabel, some of my favorite missions-
and our newest one that was 7-8 years in the making ( the Black Parade ) i'm now starting this one-, but i still recommend God Breaker, Dracula Reloaded, Ruins of Originia, Bathory, etc. some of the fan missions are as big and long as the main game itself!
Good selection. I may add that BBB's city missions are very accessible to beginners. There are no tricky puzzles, it's just progressing from one area to another. Nigel's Hidden Treasure is a nice blend of different FM styles too.
Great presentation on Thief fan missions! I've discovered Thief fan missions in 2004 after playing the T2 OG missions several times. Thief 2 Fan Missions are pretty much all I've streamed on Twitch since 2016 and I can't get enough of it. For me, the Bathory Campaign was one of the very first high end FMs I've played, and I've been hooked even since.
Totally agree with you. A great list. Also one reason the older missions aren't that highly rated on Thief Guild is simply because the site is much newer than those missions and that's why newer missions have much more ratings. Also I would say outright that yes, you should play the simpler missions before "you are allowed" to play the best ones. The best missions are chosen to be best, because they are the pinnacle of fan missions, and are much more complex and flavored than your usual FM. So someone not used to FMs might be thrown off, not just by the difficulty.
Well what a pleasant surprise this was! Nice work, and interesting theory. While I don't share all of your experiences, I do understand your reasoning. I even got a few new recommendations. Into the Maelstrom looks especially interesting. I was planning on mentioning nicked's new FM guide website in my next video also, but you beat me to it. Thanks!
I wish Maria made more missions. Into the Maelstrom by Morrgan and Vigil is just great. But I'm a fan boy of hers and have a soft spot for Careless little fly. Enjoy playing Maelstrom.
I fully agree with marblemen in recommending to avoid the highest rated missions *as starters*. More than 20 years ago, I did the same mistake, and proceeded straight with what was at the time the very top of "thief - the circle" ranking list. Needless to say, I bloodied my nose pretty quickly, and that kept me away from FMs for quite a while (I still hate The Inverted Manse, which I never finished, and never intend to...). And it happened that Thief 2X brought me back on the righteous path...
Thank you for the list! Until recently, T2X was the only fan mission I had played, and I just finished Black Parade. I'm hungry for more, so this list is very helpful.
Morrgans missions are so good, if you enjoyed all for a night's sleep and Into the Maelstrom, I recommend Greyfeather Gems pt 1 and 2. They are quite a bit more challenging though.
Another excellent video I'd generally agree with your recommendations. I'd tell any newbie to play all missions from Morrgan. All 8 of her missions should hook a Thief fan forever.
A newcomer to the Thief series, only recently ran through the trilogy on normal difficulty, trying not to kill anyone, but still stunned almost everyone on the way, except for rare missions. Before the start of the walkthroughs, I knew about FM and only after completion decided to dive at least a little, but looking at the lists of missions on the sites, was really don't know where to start because of the lack of familiarity with the types. So thanks for the video and the work, although I'm not a fan of pure puzzles and pure horror, but all the listed missions are still well done, although I skipped the "T2X" for now, leaving it for later. But of the proposed FM, the one left for the late night final and just was completed - "A Better Tomorrow", even at Normal difficulty, was able to immerse in the atmosphere of a despair horror situation. But continuing about those FM where it was interesting for me to Taffin' around: "Heist Society" - great mansion mission with solid details in rooms. "All For A Night's Sleep" - fun small street mission but pretty good designed. and of course "Endless Rain" - wonderful mission, a honed series of small challenges with short paths of Guards, between which you breathe in the expanses of a smartly made Stonemarket, which was very pleasant to pass as a Ghost on Expert even for a beginner like me who did not typically do this (despite abusing of F5-F9 :) ), not to mention the Level Design itself when you only wonder how the author could to connect locations and transitions like that. Thanks again for the video and the selection of missions, it was fun and I was glad to get acquainted even superficially with of the creativity of Looking Glass fans who continue to carry the legacy of the studio.
Thanks for the advice, I'll try these missions now. Recently I was remembering Thief, and it always seemed to me that I was going through all the parts. BUT! It turned out that I didn't play the first part (dark project) only since the second (metal age). And so, having put the mod on HD graphics, running on a 4k TV, I went through the first part of the thief with my son and had a lot of fun. How good the game is, against the background of all the garbage that is being released now!
Thank you for this video! I've played some well rated levels and while they were fun I always got either lost or couldn't find the necessary amount of loot to finish the level, perhaps as I am not quite up to the skill check yet. I shall check some of these later.
My first missions were Dark Walls, Endless Rain, Dim Valley and Burrick in a Room. All were good in terms of game design, but I felt they lacked in storytelling. Rowena's Curse fixed that. Looking forward to playing more missions from the author.
Honestly, I'd have to say Turning of the Leaves and The Perdurance are also pretty beginner-friendly. Actually, now that I think about it, a lot of the FMs from the One Million Units Contest are pretty easy.
Thank you for this video. I am on my very first playthrough of the Thief series, and was wondering which fan missions should I start with after I finish it. This was very helpful!
I actually considered including it into the list but ultimately decided that All for a Night's Sleep is more accessible. The Tower would be a good choice to play after that.
Im wanting to play a massive Mansion Mission like downton Abbey manor. but with included small village around the manor, sewers, crypts, dungeon, secret hammer temple below mannor but the size of ownton abbey manor with no mock doors etc.
I've been playing fan missions since Gathering at the Inn and Lord Edmund Entertains. I have a ttlg account from 2002. I never actually played a Deadly Shadows FM. What are your top 3?
Depends. If someone has just played Thief Gold and Thief 2 and wants more, TBP should be fine to play, though I'd still recommend starting with T2X. But if the last time you played Thief was some 20-25 years ago, jumping straight into TBP is a bad idea.
We miss you marble man :(. Hope your doing well

Glad to see someone highlighting Kfort's work, always found their missions very creative, though a bit overlooked by the community

Any recommendations for beginner? I just finished the thief trilogy and want more. Gotta scratch the itch
@@hishamjalal9078 That's what this video is for dude. Its for beginners. I echo marbleman and say T2X, then you're set for a while.

Playing Geller's Pride right now. Thanks for the recommendation. Hope you keep making these videos.
Fabulous video - can't argue with your selections.
The FM's made by SlipTip were so far ahead of wheat everyone else was making at the time, they were just mind blowing !

Hey Marble awesome video keep doing more content on Thief Fan Missions. I am a bit obsessed atm.
this video was brilliant! i really liked @deceptive perception 1 and 2, they were soooo scary!
The mansion missions are my all time favorite.
The absolute best FM to start with for me is without a doubt The Tower by Lady Rowena.
I actually considered including it into the list but ultimately decided that All for a Night's Sleep is more accessible. The Tower would be a good choice to play after that.

Thanks for this!!
Thank you so much!
My favorite fan missions is Nostalgia and Vega bond.
Hi, I noticed you might be the creator of Cracks in the Glass, fantastic mission, was there ever a sequel to it?
Thanks! There wasn't. There might be, but I haven't been actively working on it for quite a while.
Mission X and The Seven Shades of Mercury are also good FMs for beginners
I have to disagree, especially regarding Mission X, which is one of the most complex and challenging FMs ever made.
@@marblemanghosting i played it as a beginner, i didn't had any problems, but it took a while before i could complete the mission

I remember long time ago Back in my country, I borrow calendra legacy CD from my friend.
Why are your mouse movements so jerky? Great video btw
Is there any timeline to the missions?
Can someone advise a mission with interesting plot for a newbie? I like mansion missions, without any horror elements
I am currently downloading all the missions and only keeping the ones I personally deem to be fun. This may take some time.
Bloodstone Prison is a good horror mission
3 words: The Black Parade.

Maybe. I can't record anything right now, and when I'm back I thought of doing original games.

I'd play more of thief mods, if they were compatibile with the no-spiders patch. I'm too arachnophobic for this..
