How to Play UNO
UNO is a card game based on the public domain card game Crazy Eights. It is a game that has lived on shelves and in the nostalgic memories for decades and decades. Many people who play UNO have often changed, adapted or house ruled the game over time.
In this video we examine some of the widely overlooked rules to this game and we explore how this game was meant to be played. Some of these rules you may be familiar with and others you may not even know. This video aims to shed some light over the official rules for the original intention of the game.
The aim in a game of UNO is for players to empty their entire hand of cards throughout each round of gameplay. The winner of each round then gains points equal to the face up value of the cards remaining in their opponent's hands. The first player over several rounds to accumulate 500 points wins the game.
The Board Game Sanctuary is a family friendly board game channel that aims to introduce the board gaming hobby to new and seasoned players in a light, fun and humourous way.

Yes i agree, i said to them many time they said, no ur wrong

No one I know that's played Uno actually likes using the official rules. Even if I explain them and they agree to try, they'll feel weird about it and we'd never finish a game because "that's how they've always played". And then one wonders why instruction manuals even exist in the first place.
you know what,
here are some rules my friends apply everytime we play uno:
-*you are allowed to stack up +2 cards and the next player can discard a reverse card and the player who played the +2 card the most recently must draw* *(number of +2 cards discarded multiplied by 2)* *cards.*
-*when someone plays a 7 card, all other players have to put their hand on the table. the last one to do it draws 2 cards.*
-*when a player plays a 0 card, all players must stay quiet until the color is changed. whoever speaks draw a number of cards as told by other players.*
their rules somewhat annoyed me -to death-
I've never played a game of UNO with any house rules but, I'm sure with played incorrectly without following all the official rules many times by mistake.
I've always wanted to play uno with one hood rule. If the person who has uno, doesn't say uno, they would have to pick up the entire deck.

For fifteen years, I only played Uno with my family. One day a school a group of my friends were playing I joined in, I was prepared for this moment. I play well and get down to my last two cards, a wild and a blue one. I play the blue and my friend shouts “Uno!” I looked at him as he started laughing and then he told me to draw seven cards. I asked why, and he told me I didn’t say uno. I just stared at him. He said you didn’t say uno when you were down to one card. I got angry because I couldn’t understand why my buddy since kindergarten would make up a rule just to keep me from winning. Apparently, in fifteen years of playing Uno, no one in my family ever knew that shouting “Uno” when you had your last card was even a rule
seems you never read the single piece of paper that comes with UNO pack

And the last one that is left loses
Same here hehe
stacking is what makes the game INTENSE
We play a bit different, we add up our remaining hand to our own score...first to 500 ends the game...lowest score is the winner.
That’s the only house rule we use as well. Of course we also shuffle multiple decks together and play with 10+ people
That's also an official rule. Both ways are legit. The one in the video is the preferred one tho
Me reading the original uno rules after playing the made up rules my whole life
If you actually follow the rules of Uno you're the weird one not your friends
I never play with points, my family just plays until someone is out of cards, which means they're the winner.
Classmate:Let's Make A Rule. If You Look At An Opponent's Cards,You will get +2.

Imagine that everyone was intentionally showing their cards so everyone would get +2 cards.
@@thanoof the absolute mad lad
Did you know...when i play this games. Its never ends
I love stacking +2s though, it adds strategy to using them. It's sometimes smarter to hold onto it as a defensive tool than play it
It’s in uno wild tho
Because you don't play with a point system, otherwise you'd be splashing them +2, boi
If another player plays a draw 2 card and has no more cards left (the +2 was the last card) and another player places a +2 card (this is a 2-player game) does the other player draw 2 cards or will nothing happen because they won?
Is there a grace period in yelling uno? A rule we made as kids was that a player has up until he places the card down to yell uno.
The only time you can stack plus 2 cards is if you are playing with the jump in rule
Thank god I knew it drawing million cards till u get a match is just a made up rule it's very annoying when my friends dont believe me or people use that rule
Rules are meant to be broken, each family to their own

Piss off you knob
My friends made up their own dumb rule
and call it "The Asian Rules"
if you have (for example) 3 cards in your hand that has the same numbers but just in different colors, you can play all those cards in whatever order you want. the color you last put in is the color though.
In my opinion, its dumb cause it ends the game too quick (especially when they got lucky)
My friends and I always debate on WHEN to call uno. Ex. It’s my friend’s turn and she has two cards, on this turn she is about to throw out one of those cards. Is it fair to call uno as she is throwing the card out or do I have to wait until she has finished putting the card down before I call uno?!? 🤔 because sometimes as ppl are throwing that second card out that’s when they call uno.
on number 1 how many points is the card that shuffles the whole deck when you play it?
Questions:
Do wild cards Stack?
Can I put a wild card on top of a wild draw card? Vice versa (if so, do I apply rule 4 in this case)?
Does the player that has to draw from wild draw skip their turn?
Lol I already knew all of this. If you have the official Uno online game you can see that there new rules that you can turn on that change the pace of the game like jump-in, stacking, 7-0, pain train, etc.
I know pretty much all of these rules, but nobody ever believes me, especially the one about stacking +2 cards. It's infuriating.
My family is very competitive and will exploit every rule to their favor..Don't come over for drinks and Uno and act surprised when your drunk, broke and bleeding hours later.

With uno jackpot or other variations of uno, if a player plays a unique action card as their final card. The effect is null since the player is now out of cards and the round is over. The only action cards are ones with an immediate effect on another player such as a pick up 2 or wild draw four, nothing else is supposed to happen and the person that is out cannot be forced to pick up cards after they have already played their last card.
What about 0-7, force play, or jump in?
Those are custom rules I believe
Uno is very accepting of custom house rules.
And they have added their favorites as house rule options to their rules over the years.
All those you mentioned started as just random shit people who played at home did to make it more fun.
And it grew in popularity so uno shared it with everyone.
They're cool like that.
SCREW THE 0-7 RULE
And DOS?
ヤマト宇宙戦艦 | I’ve never heard of those rules; can some one explain it to me? ((It’s probably because I live under a rock >.> ))
I actually searched for this.
Thanks thou. Now let's go destroy some friendships during Quarantine!
It confused me when is started playing with friends and people stacked +2 and +4 cards or insisted that you have to keep drawing cards until you had a playable one which is a dumb rule because you end up with too many cards to hold. I'd try to tell them thise weren't the rules but it seemed like everyone around me seemed to play that one. So now I'm always the one to bring the deck, my cards my rules.
On the ' keep drawing cards until you had a playable one which is a dumb rule ' part, is it like when u dont have a playable card and u need to pick up until u have a playable card?

My family have just got into UNO. This video was really helpful (I’ve never seen rules written in such a small font). Many thanks 👍
You are most welcome :D
O-O
Rule 4 is one of the most interesting rules that people refuse to accept in Uno. This completely changes the dynamic of the game because now you're not only playing Uno, you're also playing High Risk Poker.
Wait so if you are given a draw two but accidentally draw 3 cards from the pile, does the rule specify that you have to put your card back in the deck?
ALSO, with the points, can't you play elimination style if you want to play for longer? So when someone wins they get no points and everyone else's points go against them. So if you have 4 players, the first that has 500 points against them is the first one out and then you play with 3 players until the next one hits 500 and you play with 2 players to determine a winner until someone hits 500.
Holy shit. I had to RUclips this to believe it. I can’t believe I have been playing this game wrong for so long?!
Wow I didn't know that you cannot stack the +2 and +4 cards. Also, I didn't know there was a scoring system as I have never played it that way in my life. It was always the first person who finishes their hand first wins, then second, and so on.
Why? the game comes with a rule book.
@@DukeApples you think we listen to rules, especially when braking them make the game more torturous?
as you see. When someone throws a darw +4 we simply start throwing +2 no matter what the color was suppose to be
We *survive*
Rule 3 is incorrect. You are allowed to bluff in Uno about your cards, unless bluffing is barred specifically at the start of the game. Even when you bar bluffing, you are allowed to bluff, except people can challenge your draw 4 and make you draw the 4 instead if you have something you can play. I know its a bit confusing, but it's always been that way.
The point is, it would be impossible to moderate a game to bar bluffing, as not everybody is so well-versed in the rules. The "Challenging" rule is so people can potentially "get out of a sticky situation" or so it implies when you challenge and they were lying, kind of like being required to hold a poker face in poker.
I am leaving out other aspects of the rule of course such as being allowed to fully view their hand when they challenge and if it fails you need to draw 2 additional cards, but that is irrelevant to the point.
It’s more like for the legality of when you can play wild cards. You can disregard that rule, with the chance that you can get challenged and get +4.
Basically rules you ignore because they actively make the game less fun.
"Yay i won next round, no wait we have to add up every remaining card first"
Or by far the worst is non stacking +2's, the best part of the game is holding onto all of the +2 cards for as long as possible and then when you can't play anything some unlucky person (or someone who played theirs early) gets absolutely demolished, particularly hellish with +4's
1:44 we all know uno cards arent that clean when we play🤣🤣🤣
I know some people have their own rules that they like to use. Other than the official scoring method, the way that my family likes to play is called a Battle Royale. The winning hand for the round gets zero points for that round. The remaining hands get the point value of their own cards only (so if you were stuck with a skip and a 2, you get 22 points). Rounds continue and players get eliminated when they reach 300 (we sometimes play with higher thresholds, like 500 or whatnot, depending on how long we want this thing to last). Winner is the last person remaining under 300 points.
Battle Royale usually works better with bigger groups. And we usually up the threshold when playing Uno Attack, because it's not uncommon to be left with 300+ pt hands.
Great clarification video. You forgot one more, however:
By the official rules of UNO, you may *not* willingly draw more than 1 card per turn ("willingly" being without a Draw card forcing you to). So if you draw a card that cannot be played, instead of drawing more cards, you skip your turn entirely.
Thanks for clarifying this. I did not know this rule! I guess it should now be 8 rules I didin't know about Uno. :)
@@BoardGameSanctuary lol 😂
Well, the only thing I can say is: "never change a running system." Therefore I will continue playing with the rules all my friends know and enjoy my time with them instead of bickering about unnecessary rule changes.
I love this game partially because of all the house rules you can pick through.
I once made up a rule that states the next: you start the game only being able to put a even number card and each time a "special" card is used it switches to odd numbers and so on. It was a funny but looong play; it lasted at least 40 mins.
Would never do it again. 8/10

@@user-yl3ti8jb6j OMG, REALLY?
But i like the stacking of the +2 cause if there is one person on uno then the amount of the stack affects them making them draw the number that is stacked up
0:16 usually me when playing with my friends 😂😂
I host Uno tournaments and naw, our house rules override actual gameplay rules... We feel it brings about more competition and no one is safe from any other player.
Our “Skips” & “Draw two” cards can be played and stacked towards the next player, where the player without a “Skip” or “Draw two” will receive the penalty of those cards. Although several “Skips” may have been stacked, the player only skips one turn but the “Draw two’s” accumulates and the unlucky player draws the amount of draw two cards previously stacked.
“Reverse” cards remain as a change of direction card but can be stacked by the player playing them.
“Wild” cards remain the same
“Draw Four” cards are literally the wild cards. We stack our “Draw four” cards just like the “Draw two’s”, where the odd player out is penalized the number of previously stacked cards played but our twist is, is that “Draw four” cards can be played on ANY player in the game at any time. Basic rules still apply where you can’t place a “Draw four” on top of a “Draw two” if you don’t have a “Draw two” to play but if a player sitting two or more seats away from you has Uno and on your turn you wish to stop them in their tracks, you can select them to be the recipient of your “Draw four” card, just beware though, because they could have a “Draw four” as well, reverse it back on you (or any other player for that matter) to “Draw eight” and still go out as the winner, or possibly backfire and have it reversed again making them draw twelve total cards.
We’ve found these rules to make for an entertaining night of cut throat, back stabbing Uno contenders 🤣🤣
Rule 4, 6 and 7 are normally used in the digital version of UNO with rule 4 being able to be enabled or disabled which is kinda neat.
Rule 5 also takes place in the digital version of UNO in the form of "stacking" which is normally disabled but can also be enabled.
I dont get it on rule 6, he say after draw a card from pile is the card that i wanna keep, than i have draw "1 more card " from the pile and play with discard pile.
But what if the "1 more card" i draw still doesn't match with the DISCARD pile than how??
He says that if you don't have a card in your hand that you can play, you *must* draw 1 card from the draw deck. If that card that you drew can be played, you *may* do so.
Alternatively, if you do have a card in your hand that can be played, but you rather save it for later, you *may* instead draw 1 card from the draw deck. If that card that you drew can be played, you *may* do so.
thanks for your throughly explanation for the scoring of the winner!

Back in my country i did not know uno but we played similar game with regular cards called crazy.
#2 is drow 2 and it stacks
Ace is drow 4 and it stacks
#8 and J are used to change the suit.
#7 can be used to play all cards of similar suit in one go.
You have to call crazy when u have 1 card left before someone calls crazy or else you drow 5 cards
We make our rules when playing with friends or family like if someone uses a +2 card the next player can use a reverse or skip of the same color to avoid it or throw another +2 card of the same color to up the draw. Its a lot of fun when everyone is skipping, reversing going up the total to that last player that doesn't have how to defend them self & have to take all those +2 cards. Same with the +4 cards. Other rule is anyone can throw all the same card in color & number in one turn to speed up the game.
The thing is that half the fun is that everyone has different rules. I draw until I can play, even if that means taking 20 cards, and I stack +2s. My neighbour only draws once and swaps hands when 7s or 0s are placed.
7-0 is a house rule
"DRAW 2 cards DO NOT STACK"

It’s so good whenever you play 2 player game
Who TF would bother counting the points? no matter how you play it, while playing with family or when drinking with friends. Counting will suck all the fun out of the playing.
Uno really need it's own anime adaptations so people can actually play as it's intended rules
I agree lol
Someone should get to work on that show
Um. Where the hell did the 0 card come from?
I played a helluva lot of Uno when I was somewhat younger and don't remember it going to zero or the rule about swapping hands and we tried playing with the instructions rules a few times.
I think that everyone realizes that stacking +2 and +4 is not in the rules, but I prefer it because it puts an actual element of risk vs reward into playing an otherwise completely safe card.
So.. wait... u cant play +2 on +2? Or +4 on +4 !
Dear lord last night I was forced to hold 20cards in my hands!
you can’t say uno when you already put the second card down
This rules are usually called professional rules or tournament rules, playing uno casually is hard if there are many rules, except the rule 7 and rule 5

its official and original!
@@BoardGameSanctuary yeah, thanks for letting me know
I am only watching as I am not sure how I should put my Uno cards back in their box, please show me and others, may ask the same, thank you.
The way it's written in my game's rule book, at the end of the round the players with cards left in their hands gain minis points according to their leftover cards. After someone reaches -500 pts that player is the loser and the one with the least points wins. Also Draw 2 cards are -30pts, Wild is -40 and Draw 4 is -60. And Draw 2/4 cards stack.
Maybe there are different rules in different countries/editions.
ight imma need some pictures of that rule book cause that sounds like pure bs.
One time I played a Wild Draw 4 as my final card and my father said You couldn't do that and I was confused because I had read the rule book and it never mentioned that. He said that older versions that a rule against that, though I never found any sources if that was true. (I also got to play that Wild Draw 4 in the end too.)
You can play UNO however you want to. This is just try hard mode.
Sergio Alvizo explain why my family wants to play any way we want. You can make your own rules, unless its really hard to win. You dont even need to keep track of points! Just play until someone has no cards!
