      It's important to remember that Superman has 3 identities: "Superman", "Kal-el", and "Clark Kent". Of those 3, "Clark Kent" is unquestionably the most important because THAT IS WHO HE REALLY IS. He is Clark Kent, the son of Jonathan and Martha Kent who gave him his spiritual and moral groundings. The greatest loss Clark ever felt was the death of his father, Jonathan Kent. NOT Jor-el. Jor-el was "Kal-el's" young-adult mentor who could only build on the foundations that Martha and Jonathan had laid down, like a college professor or tradesman apprenticing a new student. And finally, "Superman" is the least important identity of the three, as it is a public alias given to him by Lois Lane. This is why the latest actors and producers who've tried to portray Superman have come up short; they keep trying to portray the grandeur that is "Superman", or the "Alien" identity that is "Kal-el" but have debased the American ideal that is "Clark Kent" (out of crass political correctness) who is the core of Superman's identity - because it is his TRUE identity. There is one important scene in the movie where Jonathan has a heart-to-heart with his son, Clark (played Jeff East and voiced over by Reeves). Jonathan alludes to a higher calling and even God, trying to give his son guidance right before a heart-attack suddenly takes him from a grieving Clark and Martha. This moment becomes the deciding factor in the final moments of the movie when "Superman" has to choose to either saving Lois, or obey Kal-el's dictate that he not interfere in human history (which Clark does literally, by turning back time to change history).

    •  6 лет назад +4

      Terry Kain umm, except in Donner movies Superman is showned to PRETEND to be that goofy and awkward Clark Kent, which was never a thing in comics or cartoons. There is no political correctness (really?) in that Zack Snyder portrayed Superman and Clark Kent way it was meant by his creators Siegel and Schuster. An assimilated immigrant.
      Also you call new Superman an "alien" (which is not true, as Superman in Man of Steel himself says "I grew up in Kansas, it's as American as it gets"). Meanwhile Donner movie (which is The Movie and II as it was originally meant to be one movie in two parts) portrays him as a God that puts up a weak human as disguise and later tries to abandon his powers to become human (and fails). A God that can control death itself if he wants it.

    • @7Seraphem7
      @7Seraphem7 6 лет назад +34

      The best description, from Supes himself, is "Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I can do."
      Yes the whole "Clark is Superman pretending to be 'human'" bit was how it was portrayed in the Silver Age, but since then, it's been the other way around, and often used to contrast Batman, where it's more often shown that Batman is the 'real' persona, while Bruce Wayne is the mask.

  • @NoAwesomeness
    @NoAwesomeness 9 лет назад +1702

    As well as the obvious difference shown in this scene (The changing voice, the straightened back, the change in language and assertiveness) if you compare pictures of reeve's clark kent with his superman, they actually do look different. When clark smiles, for example, the way he kinda raises only one side of his mouth shows that sense of awkwardness, while superman smiles with a sort of confidence in his expression. The glasses also do more than just cover the area around his eyes. They actually make the eyes look slightly bigger, which alters perception of facial structure between the two identities and distracts attention from other areas like his defined jawline. Now i doubt the original creators thought this much bout his identity but Reeve and the team behind the movies certainly did a fantastic job at making sure to clearly separate the identities

      One of the things about Superman is that he could have used actual vision-correcting lenses to alter the appearance of his eyes and further throw off his identity, because he could use his telescopic/microscopic vision powers to compensate for the distortion.

      Clark Kent is his real identity; the child raised by Martha and Jonathan, his spiritual parents who gave him the moral and virtuous groundings. It is the true identity of the "Man of Steel". The other parts of Clark's identity are "Kal-el" and "Superman". As Kal-el, he is the biological son of Jo-Rel, who became his senior mentor and built on the moral foundation laid by his American parents. "Superman", the third identity is just an alias (created by Lois Lane) - it's like a stage-name for an actor in public press releases (actually, that's exactly what the "Superman" moniker is) - and it's probably the least important identity of the three.

  • @ryancole3058

    I've always enjoyed the idea that Superman actually has three identities.
    A mild mannered reporter who keeps his nose down and awkwardly lugs from locale-to-locale, timid and vulnerable, and almost absurdly kind.
    a figure of heroic importance and incorruptible principles, more myth than man, a worldly ideal that inspires us all
    and I like to think that both of them are facades, or more acurately, the extreme ends of his true self, the third 'identity', the adopted son from Smallville who is certain of his conviction and dedication to good, aware of his power and influence in the world, but still timid and uncertain in his pursuit of happiness.
    I think, between 0:29 and 0:45 (right before he dons his second, more confident identity), we see that man. And he's the reason why I'll always love Superman.

    • @quillion3rdoption
      @quillion3rdoption 6 лет назад +98

      Agreed. I think too many adaptations fail to notice that both Superman and reporter Clark are just disguises for the real Clark/Kal-El. It's too bad MoS focused a little too much on him developing the "Superman" identity and too little on the development of real, genuine Clark. MoS had that "you are my son" scene; why couldn't we get more scenes like that?

It works as shorthand if you refer to Bruce as just the uncaring irresponsible playboy but in actuality there's more to him than obsession, vengeance or justice. The real Bruce Wayne is the man who took the Robins in, who fights to make sure no other child experiences the pain he did. He's also the one who funds free clinics, soup kitchens, orphanages and Arkham Asylum and does his best to reform criminals, even giving some of them jobs.

    I think this scene shows what the current franchise's films lack. Superman is not my favourite superhero, but Reeves manages to portray him as the hero of humanity, bright like the sun. Not sure if it's the current actor's fault or it's the directors, but in Man of Steel he looks like some sort of scary demigod with no human side.

    • @TheDeathmail

      To be fair... Man of Steel has Superman dealing with darker issues and putting on actual pressures...
      And the lighting of the movie is so freakin depressing...
      Snyder is just too focused on all the awesome bad ass parts.. that's the issue...
      Just a bunch of awesome things that could make a perfect movie... but it's just a bunch of awesome things that could make a perfect movie..... and in the end, it just lacks the essence of Superman himself...

    • @KingOfKingz819
      @KingOfKingz819 8 лет назад +45

      Gotta keep in mind that Man of Steel is happening at the same time that Clark Kent is just learning how to be a hero with powers. He doesn't know how to BE Superman quite yet.

    • @TheDeathmail
      @TheDeathmail 8 лет назад +79

      KingOfKingz819 That wasn't the problem though.
      It wasn't really the Superman character most people had issues with. Many people understood that he was just starting to be Superman.
      But he wasn't given good lines or any happy moments.
      How often did he even properly smile? Most dialogue between him and other people felt stale.
      He didn't really feel alive even when alone.

    • @KingOfKingz819
      @KingOfKingz819 8 лет назад +12

      +TheDeathmail in terms of the story the DCEU is telling, he was still finding that in himself. He's not the symbol of hope that he turns into yet in Man of Steel. In BvS, he's more established, but he's again facing an internal battle over whether he needs to be Superman and he has to go to Ma for guidance and then has the dream about Pa that also gives him advice. He eventually concludes that he does needs to be just that because Earth is his world now. It's all been a journey for Superman to actually grow into becoming Superman.
      He will be the Superman we all know and love when he returns in Justice League and the future DCEU films. That's where his story is heading.

    • @TheDeathmail
      @TheDeathmail 8 лет назад +34

      KingOfKingz819 Again, that wasn't the main problem.
      It was that the story wasn't told very well.
      Snyder is too focused on the awesome parts and not the story.
      Also, using the depressing coloring doesn't work. Yes, the issues he's dealing with are depressing, but that coloring of the films didn't fit very well.
      Also, the way the characters became. They were kinda stale and not very good. Clark's dad didn't often sound like a dad, and Lois... she started off interesting, but then became obsessed about how Superman was the hope of the world and what not.
      The back story in random order didn't work.
      Also, in BvS, they didn't even fight that often and the reason for the battle felt too forced. Also, Luther felt too much like a Joker.
      And the list could go on and on.
      DC had lots of awesome and beautiful scenes, but they didn't add that great of a movie. It felt incoherent and mashed together.
      In fact, BvS actually took a lot from multiple Superman and Batman stories, not just one or 2....

    This is a 60 second master class in acting. Margot Kidder is fumbling around the scene, but Christopher Reeve nails it. One second he's "Clark Kent" (the nerd he created to fool the world), then he straightens his back and becomes the real Clark Kent, then he breathes in and becomes Superman...before slipping back into his secret identity within another second. Brilliant.

    • @Circuitssmith
      @Circuitssmith 7 лет назад +6

      That is a brilliant take on things. Reeve understood the core of the Superman character, which meant knowing which of his 3 identities was acting through the other ones.

    • @bagg10101
      @bagg10101 7 лет назад +15

      I wouldn't say that Kidder was fumbling around in the scene. She was in a stupor as this scene took place just after her flight with Superman, hence why Clark initially motions to her if she has been on the sauce. This also explains why she didn't see 'him' when she reappeared moments later. But yes, Reeve was outstanding here.

    No one before or since has brought Superman to life as good as Christopher Reeve did. This scene represents some of the finest acting ever seen in a superhero role. Reeve shows why he is the greatest Superman of them all: he slides from Clark Kent to Superman and back with such wonderful skill and sincerity, making the performance BOTH a dual identity and different sides of the same identity. A super scene from a super film. God bless.

    I heard that the producers had narrowed down their choice for Superman to two big-name actors (Burt Reynolds and Warren Beatty) and two unknowns. Chris Reeve was one of those unknowns. In the end, they decided by having each actor put on the Clark Kent glasses. When they looked at Reeve, they said, "That's Clark Kent!". But, at the time, Reeve was too skinny so they were going to have him wear foam padding fake muscles. He worked out for the next 3 months to put on about 20 pounds of muscle and transformed himself into Superman.

    The main difference is that Christopher Reeve, his appearance, personality and most importantly, character was pretty much as close to Superman as anyone can be. Decent, honorable, righteous, humble and gentle. To me, Cavill just doesn't capture these values very well. And then on top of this the way the new movies try to make the character more complicated is just a huge mistake. In one of the early interviews Reeve gave about his portrayal of the role (you can find it on RUclips) he says something like "Superman, because of his powers, is able to see the world very very simply and be a force for good". This statement captures the essence of Superman perfectly - because of his powers he doesn't need to see the world in shades of grey like us mere mortals but he can see it in black and white... or in other words, he can pursue ideals. So, as a 20-something year old actor, he understood this and that is what makes his portrayal of Superman so genuine and great. Cavill and Snyder just don't understand this aspect of the character which is why their movies feel hollow.

Was sorry about the semi-creepy take on the character they gave him (hanging around Lois' pad, lonely and lovelorn, while Lois and Richard and THE KID had gone on without him). HATED that take on Lois. Didn't like Bosworth in the role at all, and Richard as a character is such a good, wonderful guy - Superman without the powers, really - that what chance does Clark ever have with Lois unless Richard dies (in which case he'll likely be a martyr and Lois will worship him forever)?
