- Recently, I have been thinking an unreasonable amount about Nintendo-related plushes, and specifically, how much they've been underwhelming me. Whether it be their lack of availability or their lack of legacy support, today I'd' like to dissect my problems with how Nintendo plushes have been handled recently.

The biggest sin Nintendo has ever committed is not making high quality Luma Plushies. Like COME ON, they're basically the poster child for most marketable plushie design!!!

Honestly at this point I'm convinced it was some inside joke at nintendo to make the most plushieable design and then not make plushies of it. I mean characters in sparks of hope OWN luma plushies
Splatoon merch anywhere outside of Japan is notoriously hard to get, which is really disappointing because you know there's a very dedicated fanbase even outside of Japan that would buy literally anything they could get

Yeah and they don't even have any Octoling in humanoid form plushes (not counting Shiver) that are official. I'd so want one as the designs on them are so cool.
All I could find to do with Splatoon near me is just one of the squids. It was half an hour away and in a tv, movie and game shop, so no chance for me.
To add to this, Nintendo is having it's most successful generation ever. I don't see why plushes coinciding with Wii U releases would do better than Switch

Welp, now I know about the deficiencies of Nintendo's plush partnership.
i love when plushies that look almost identical to other ones are 50 times the price because a company decided to just not make money for some reason

me when i'm trying to get a pokemon plush and they go for THREE TIMES AS MUCH AS THEIR UNIT PRICE BY EBAY SELLERS
the way some san-ei pokemon plush are fairly cheap but then others are sold for like, yknow, 3 more times.... its ridiculous!!!!
I usually head to pokemon center popup shops once a year to buy them. It’s expensive af there though.

I still don't know why they won't make luma plush! they are simply designed, super adorable and can be redone in all the different colors in the games.
Luma is the single most plushable character from any video game ever, I will never understand how they still have yet to make a plush of them
As someone who's made their own Luma plushies, my only guess in not doing so is the odd complexity of the design.. in order to have the star shape hold, the plush itself has to be in at least 3 pieces to give a round shape. The arms and little "hair" coil were surprisingly difficult to sew and keep accurate, which often led me to restitch the whole thing a couple of times in order to give some semblance of "support" for the individual shapes.
Maybe if they give the rights to Sanei or, hell, TOMY to make a limited life-size plush run, it could definitely work out. But as typically manufactured plushies given the difficulty of the shape, probably not. But that' just my two cents.
Sanei did make a Plush set for Super Mario Galaxy in 2007-2008 only including Normal Mario, Fire Mario, Boo Mario and Lastly Bee Mario
I have to COMPLETELY agree with your availability point. I live in Europe and getting my plushies is something that not everyone can do. I was lucky to find a Luigi one in my local videogame store, but for Marie and Callie from Splatoon I had to go to NY and buy them from the store… that’s a very big problem, even bigger when taking into account I had to get them on the last day of my trip due to the lack of stock.
I hope both Nintendo and SAN-EI can fix this in a future.

For Mario Kart: Why don't they simply make a default kart plushie that way we can another plushie in it.

The fact that they haven’t made thousand year door plushies is insane to me, those side characters are amazing in design and i would love to get my hands on real ones as a collector. But Nintendo being Nintendo. THEY DO HORRIABLE BUISNESS DECISIONS. AND JUST 1 NEW MARIO WONDER PLUSH IS INSANE! Not to mention i only have 4 Mario plushies since i have a hassell amount of fnaf, poppy playtime, Minecraft and Kirby plushies so I HOPE they re release those old plushies. 😭
I'd imagine it's something to do with the fact that they're very much designed _as_ 2D characters (could be wrong, though; I have no idea if they've done plushies for the other paper mario games).

IDK, maybe if nothing else bootlegs will eventually start showing up, lmao. I have one that's the old cartoon King Koopa design that I like quite a bit. The sad part is, more complex characters like Vivian are among the least likely to get bootlegs even because they're wholly original designs with no official plush to use as a starting point (IE Bowser -> King Koopa, Goomba -> Goombella, Yoshi -> Boshi, etc etc etc)

As a pokemon-fan I can confirm that we are drowning in New plush releases every other week. I have 23 Gengars and don't regret buying them. (My wallet certainly does, though)

Yeah, as someone who’s favorite pokemon is Bulbasaur (so a g1 starter) I own like 30+ different plushes, and there’s always new ones coming out… and I’ll prob still buy them lol
Forget Nintendo, Sanei needs to pick up the sonic licence again those plushies are getting scalped to hell and back
Edit: no Pauline plush is odd since odyssey made her incredibly popular, tho it took years for rosalina to get one after her debut in galaxy so maybe the same can happen for Pauline

I was never aware of their sonic plushes, but it sounds like they suffer from the exact same problems and then some, which is crazy! If there’s this much demand for the products you could still be selling, then not selling them is just you throwing away money.
Honestly, Im really annoyed they didnt do wedding bowser if they were to just add him to the set I think the set would have all we need. also I will never forgive good stufff for making cheap copies of these plushies man

My assumption is that it’s a demand issue - is there reallllly enough demand for an odd porcupuffer plush, bomb or any other niche character? Sadly no, meaning new sets are lackluster but safe.
Yeahhh I guess that’s probably what it comes down to. Although I will forever argue that if they made more of an effort with their plushes there would be a greater demand for them
I'm a rando who doesn't buy plushies and I saw a bobomb plush at goodwill and almost bought it just because it was in front of my eyes lol. I ended up not getting it cuz I figured a kid would probably find it and enjoy it more than me and also the idea of buying plushies from goodwill kind of makes me queasy due to... contamination concerns... I think a lot of people would buy niche Nintendo plushes if they were just in front of them just due to the sheer "whoa that's so niche..... I want it!" factor and also the poor impulse control most people have. The problem is Nintendo doesn't put them in front of most people, so the only people buying them are the diehards who are seeking them out.

Ironically, Nintendo used to be a toy company. Seems like they forgot how that works.
I pick and choose what plushies I like. I can’t afford most of them. I also enjoy collecting amiibo figures as they can be used in multiple different games.
Also, scalpers are not a company problem. They’re scammers but those horrible greedy people border on criminal activity with how obscenely overpriced their practices are.
Nintendo wants you to buy stuff with their comparatively more affordable prices but these scumbags make it harder to get stuff. Also, Sony and Microsoft have gone through the same thing with hardware and games.
I hope those scalpers are actually punished for this because it’s completely disgusting.
Paying for excessive shipping isn’t reasonable either. You should always look at the right places that will make it financially viable to get stuff without the seller screwing you over.
This video is one I didn't know I needed. I am still waiting for them to make an official Dixie Kong Plush. Also Pauline having no official plush is ridiculous. Sanei is not only behind but slacking.
For real! There are so many characters that are complete no brainers for plushes, but they just don’t bother to actually make them.

The fact that we don't have a (new) Mallow plush is baffling to me, the guy is perfect for a plushie imo. Would also be awesome to see Geno get one but I think he'd work better as a toy or even an Amiibo.

I completely agree with you here, I'm very passionate about plushies and I even made plush videos back in the early to mid 2010s. Something that's always been confusing to me specifically is how King Boo has never gotten an official plush. King Boo's round design is the most simple design that would work perfectly for a plush. But someone's made a good custom plush for both Luigi's Mansion and Mario Spinoff King Boo designs. Once again great video, you covered this topic very well!

I think the problem with Nintendo plush merch and in general is there’s so many options and it’s impossible to measure demand you don’t really see people go crazy for plushies of any characters unless they’re kids in a theme park or store but more likely as souvenirs at theme parks which is why I think Nintendo is missing the opportunity with Super Nintendo world for endless merch and stores especially online etc.
Yeah that’s a good point. In the grand scheme of things this is a fairly niche issue that really doesn’t affect that many people, but i feel like the appeal of owning certain characters in plush form is still pretty far reaching. I’d also argue if they made the plushes more easy to buy, they’d have a much more accurate measure of their demand, but I can understand to some extent why there’d be a hesitance on their part

Big Sanei/Little Buddy "Plushieholic" here! i agree about sanei kinda slacking on plush sets, now i agree the pikmin 3 captain's should 100% be plushies and maybe along with the pikmin 4 cast like shepherd and collin, And don't get me started on how much i spent on oatchi... Anyways! the availability for some plushies really suck *cough* pearl and marina *cough* but i'm really happy that they are re-releasing some older sets like the luigi's mansion set for the dark moon remake but i would have loved to see a plush set for the Super Mario RPG game i already know scalpers would take the geno and mallow plushies and i can't imagine the prices... aside from that thought, i hope you have a good day :]
when it comes to sanei plushes, i like the super mario line way more than the all star line, as i feel they better represent the characters. i think all star variants look significantly worse, too perfect. also, i bought my brother a mario plush from the all star line and its nose fell off 💀(im surprised you only mentioned the mario party 5 set once)

Honestly, I largely agree! There are a lot of all stars plushes that I prefer, or at the very least think are different enough to be cool in their own right, but for the most part I’d probably rather have the older variants

not sure if anyone mentioned this but from collector to collector, suruga-ya is a japan based store thats like a thrift store and they often host free shipping events internationally (including UK i believe) every month and u can get them for much cheaper compared to meccha japan and such. still a bit of a pain but definitely better than meccha japan. the quality is often really good, usually just like new (plushies are definitely on the safer side to buy). there is a 500 yen service fee but definitely better than the awful shipping prices. really good video btw, i definitely feel your pain 😭

Ideally it'd be all three of them, but Alph and Brittany would probably be easiest to make since they're similar in shape to Olimar and Louie, while Charlie's shape is more similar to the President of Hocotate Freight who (very understandably) didn't get a plush. Either way, I would KILL for Brittany merch other than some obscure eraser set-thing.

Yes, THIS! As someone who lives in a place where having access to these plushies is a luxury (I only own a Yoshi and a Fire Luigi by the lord's will and mercy), this video shows my sentiments exactly!! I'm also looking forward to getting my hands on that Elephant Mario plush, but there's a very VERY slim chance I will find him (Thank god Little Buddy already localized it for US consumers, making my search a bit easier...). Thanks for addressing this incredibly niche and specific issue, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way :')
Normally when a new Splatoon game comes out, San-Ei makes plushies of the characters on the cover of the game along with the game’s idols, so I was wondering where Splatoon 3’s cover character plushies were. Glad to have an explanation on what San-Ei is doing recently.

I just went on EBAY and, no joke, i saw anime plush at 110$ and 160$. For one character, not 2 or 3. That's so expensive 😮Thank god i also saw plushes who cost 20$ (40 with the shipping price) That's more reasonable!
As a Kirby fan it’s kinda shocking to see how good we get it as a lot of the important games and even some spinoffs like dream buffet get plushies, hell we got a Magolor plush variant based on an appearance he takes in a SIDE POST GAME MODE FOR A REMAKE of an older game which is cool but just makes me wish Mario had just as much love. We have plushies of nearly every dream friend from star Allies, even some obscure ones from older games like adeline ribbon and gooey while Mario wonder doesn’t even get prince florian
I’ve had this gripe for a while now with collecting plushes in general. I was interested in getting a plush of Koromaru from the persona series (he’s literally just a dog), and there are 3 actual plushes of him that I know of. The first one was released along side the movie from I think 2015-2016 that goes for $170 USD. The second one was released alongside the special edition of Persona Q2, a 3DS game that was released in 2019, so obviously it didn’t sell too well and the plush is hard to come by, I don’t even know how much one is, I haven’t found a listing from a site I trust. The third one was released for the remake of Persona 3, it looks very stupid and goes for $80 (also the plush maker already stopped selling them because it’s a “collectors” plush, it was released only in april of this year!)

Meanwhile I'm waiting for one of the plushies of one of my favorite Touhou characters to get restocked because I don't want to buy the plush from a scalper and I can't find any bootlegs of her at the moment ;-;

I remember even back then when Odyssey was releasing how there were barely any plushes for it and how baffling it was to me. Availability has always been an issue with me and their stuff especially back then where it seemed the only places you could purchase things from besides the Nintendo store and online importing were japanese import shops (from what I've heard) or stores that had a few Japanese imported items (like a barnes and noble from my experience). I live in North America and in recent years, I've started to see the all star mario plushes being sold at places like *target* which was incredibly baffling to me. I'm thankful for it, but at the same time confused as to why this hasn't been the case all along. And don't even get me started on tracking down stuff that's no longer available like you said; it's a nightmare. Great video : )

Y'know, I never quite noticed how San-Ei hadn't been handling some of their plush lines the best until I watched this. Very eye-opening!
To add onto the Super Mario 3D All-Stars idea, what if the Super Mario 64 portion of the set included a Wing Cap Mario plushie? Sure, it might be redundant with all the other Marios included, but they could easily make it more special by aiming to have it specifically based on Mario's in-game model, if you get what I'm saying.
Also, more non-Nintendo video game plush sets like the Sonic and Mega Man sets would be nice to see from San-Ei. I would've loved to see them do a set for Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series back when it came out, especially since the Klonoa series is sorely lacking in official plushies. I imagine this hypothetical set would include Klonoa in both his Door To Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil designs, as well as Huepow, Lolo, Popka and the ever iconic Moo. Just an idea for something they could've done!
what upsets me so much is how i have to pay HUNDREDS for plushies. as an avid splatoon fan, it is so difficult to get them. whilst i do have a couple, even merch in general is so expensive. we either need a nintendo store in the UK or having more accessibility to get these plushies for a way cheaper price.
Being in Japan I never thought about this... These things are so ubiquitous almost any character of a medium size is just a few bucks in most used toy or used game stores and not super expensive new either. I randomly stopped in a Toys R Us last weekend and remember seeing all the Wonder toys on clearance too. So many official Nintendo stores also make it an easy (if also the priciest) option to pick up anything that is being sold officially.
Man do I love everything and everyone being negative and "(insert something here) has a problem/issue."

I have a huge plush collection and I love Nintendo games. I would be very happy buy more Nintendo plushes but I don't want to spend 300x the retail price just because the company don't want my money.

So happy to see someone share similar enthusiasm as me about video game plushes! I had no idea the UK didn't sell Sanei plushes, that sucks man! Aside from the Nintendo Store, Sanei plushes here in the US are sold in Walmart, Gamestop, and Target. I also have a local game store that has some. This video really showed me how blessed I am when it comes to Sanei plushes. I hope that Sanei will cash in on these ideas cuz you read my desires like a book!
Here in the us we are lucky enough to have a company called little buddy llc realesed the sanei plushes here at gamestops and sometimes at other stores like best buy but they aren't as common as in japan
I believe little buddy also operates in the UK to some extent! But they have such a small sample of San-ei’s lineup available that it’s hard for me to really say they’re helping much over here

Oh interesting! I know very little about that series’ merchandise, so I’ll definitely have to give that video a watch when it comes out!
If I may speak up as a Pokemon and Kirby fan: Sanei’s handling of those series can be frustrating too. Sanei still hasn’t made several rather major Kirby characters: particularly Dark Meta Knight, Galacta Knight, Morpho Knight (all of whom would be an easy reskin) and The Mage Sisters (Who could be reskins of each other.) They also haven’t really touched on the villains which is a crying shame because I’d buy plushies of some of them (looking at you Sectonia and Elfilis) in an instant.
They’re… better with Pokemon, but there are still a lot of Pokemon who I wish got plushies at never have. In particular, there will be tons of cool new Pokemon who haven’t gotten any merch when the next gen releases, meaning those mons from the previous gen get left in the dirt as they move onto making merch of the new guys. But I guess that’s more of a complaint with how Pokemon’s atrocious release cycle in general not only damages the quality of the games but the merchandising as well LMAO

I think you explained some problems that Sanei have really well.
One problem I have is that some plushies can have the iron on or sticker like materials.
My example is the painter Kirby plush where on his face there’s a sticker like material to show the paint on his face. I doubt it’s that they don’t have the money for it to be embroidered.
I think Sanei is one of the best plush companies that cover Nintendo properties. Again what a good video from a small channel I hope you can get more people seeing your content.
Oh interesting! I’ve never really encountered a plush with that issue, probably because my collecting efforts have mostly remained focused on the Mario series, but yeah that’s a valid compliant! Their attention to detail and quality is what makes them so good in my eyes, so it’s disappointing to hear they can drop the ball on certain details like that.
@@Rawk__ they have that material on other plushies besides Kirby. They do that for some animal crossing characters as well. I’m not sure if any of the Mario all star plushies have that kind of material to them to my knowledge.

I have ordered an Ice and Glow pikmin plush from japan and they are coming *today* !!!
I was looking arround the Nintendo website a few days ago, the whole time feeling jealous of Japanese people. Why do they get 64 ENTIRE PAGES of JUST merch, not even including games, accesories and others things. Also, not related to plushies, why are a lot of shirt (like for example, the Navi Ocarina of time shirt) only available in "Womens cut"?
As a nintendo plush collector (mainly mario) for like 7 years this isn’t even something ive noticed, but im happy its been brought up. Mario Wonder keeps only staple enimies to the series and otherwise completely refreshes the catalogue of enemies. None of them are plushes? What the fuck?

Very true! Although they were made by different companies, and aren’t super easy to get your hands on these days unfortunately
The winged and rock pikmin plushes released in 2018-19 alongside new plushes of the original 3 Pikmin and Olimar after the release of Hey Pikmin. The Olimar and Louie plushies shown are from San-ei's Pikmin All Star Collection, not the Pikmin 1 or 2 sets.
I still remember when I got the Boo Mario plush from Amazon back in 2008. Good times.
The only plush I really want is the Animal Crossing Jingle from 2001. It's rarely on ebay and always gone before I can even bid.
It would be nice if Sanei made a new set with Jingle, Jack, and other holiday villagers.

I feel like Pokémon is SEVERELY Invested in making sure that every single one of their creatures has it's own plushie. They started the Sitting Cuties/ Pokémon Fit series a few years ago and now we have a plushie of every single Gen 1-6 Pokémon now. I'm predicting we'll be up to date with Gen 7,8 and 9 Sitting Cuties within 3/4 years
Edit: Also, HOLY SHIT I LOVE SAN-EI PLUSHIES. I have quite a few of them myself. I have Piplup, Torchic, Pachirisu, Alolan Vulpix, Kirby, Elfilin and Isabelle. I can vouch for them being really high quality plushies. The downside is that they're just flat out not sold in the UK. Aside from Kirby and Isabelle (which I bought in a GAME store) I had to get the rest of them ordered from another country :/
been a pokemon collector of stuff and often, san-ei has mainly been associated with pokemon for me (since i collect from pokemon way too much) , and i wont lie this is a VERY good video on it... ive never noticed how strange merchandise has been. wonder is such a creative game, so its strange that theres only one???
quick edit but its still strange to see companies not do more characters when i see those in a fanbase clearly want plushtoys of them. like just a me thing so far, but its been a year and theres hardly any tarountula merchandise!!!!!! its ridiculous!!!!
like i wont lie, having a plush of some of the more obscure characters is a cool brag to have, but it feels its always marketability first...

All of my frustrations of plush companies summarized into one complete video. You'd be suprised at how many good plush there are out there, that still haven't been rereleased to this day. Sanei had a great kirby plush set back in 2008-2011. Arguably the best King DeDeDe and Meta Knight plushies were released, and haven't been rereleased since 2014 or 2015. Plush can become so rare so fast, which makes it EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING trying to obtain them. There are still characters that haven't been released in plush form yet, considering their popularity. I've wanted a Funky Kong plush for a while, yet the last time one was made, was in the 90s. We really need more plush to be made or released. Amazing video!

They wouldn’t have the merchandising rights for all those games you mentioned… you’re assuming a lot in this video.
One; that plushes make a lot of money, and that these niche games need them.
And two; that this company is just automatically given the rights to these games.
If other companies are making pushes as well that should be a massive hint that they would have to bid/put in some sort of request for those rights….
There probably isn’t as much of a market as you think there is… from the looks the games that get the most support are Pokémon, animal crossing and Kirby. Kirby is a juggernaut in Japan in terms of this kind of merchandise, and animal crossing and Pokémon appeals to the target audience, cute and collectible.
What you describe doesn’t really fall into that audience. Wario would not be a “cute” plushy… Mario isn’t really either, I think it’s fair what you said about Mario Wonders Elephant plushies, but again that likely shows they don’t have much faith in this form of merchandise for these games…
Like why do you keep mentioning reskins?? I don’t know much about this but having plush’s with entirely different seams but of a same character makes it a different plush, those Mario bro U plushes are far more more then just a reskin you can see the toad has different seams just looking at it’s head…
As someone who makes pikmin plush videos, I would give a pinky for a new enemy plush. I jumped right on moss when she came out and the enemies are starving
