The groceries at Fantu super market are expensive, even for us come back home with dollars 😅 because most items are imported and they are jntented for non-locals and tourists. My suggestion for you is to go to chain supermarkets like Queens and Shoa who are much cheaper and are catering for locals. Enjoy your stay and I am about binge watching your contents. 😊

They are called (directly translated into English): short-term travel insurance and continuous travel insurance. With or without "world coverage". Standard is coverage for Europe. And there are a lot of other extra options available (all the ones you mention). These insurances are being offered by all health insurance companies (your own health insurance company f.e.), but also by other insurance companies (car, life, home insurance etc).
It definitely is expensive, even by US standard. I think the reason for that is because most of the grocery items in that supermarket are imported. They local markets, where you will find fresh items for much cheaper.
Africa is a developing continent. And so when you go to any of the African nations, please don’t expect to receive what you are used to in America and in Europe. Go with the flow. Lower down your expectation
You got the banana from the street vendor with a local price, and not with a tourist price. I get a kilo of banana for 60ETB, just above 1USD. And yes, you guys arrived in Ethiopia while food prices have just settled burning through the roof that it's wildly crazy. Despite that, I hope you're enjoying your time.

Things used to be cheap in Ethiopia. but now the government devalue its currency to make local export cheaper. Ethiopia is following the Chinese approach to development.when you make local exports cheaper, imported goods will become expensive because your currency is devalued.Tourist usually consume imported goods. so it makes sense why it's expensive.
🙄I freaked out for a moment when you were describing about how the food is expensive which relatively speaking is true !but tricky situation in ETH. is that you can find exact same commodity like vegetable, fruits and cereals in good price ; So all you have to do is just look around you and do a little research it may not be a fancy place but you can find the most fresh food around the corner with a little effort ...we take this free market thing too seriously I guess 😉😀By the way around here we don't even segregate foods organic inorganic that much and for weird reasons organic ones are cheaper again relatively speaking may be because they smaller in size or I don't know the real reason ;the market is that way for now so in that way and I think we are benefited in that one at least ….. Unfortunately for those imported packed foods the reason why they are very expensive is that one - locals/We don't use them much and two came in to the country with the high foreign currency ... speaking of market I salute Chinese people who live in Addis they have these insane big market around specific place called " Bole -Ruanda "market; It almost looks like the local traditional food market that no body really pay that much attention but amazing amazing place ,they bring all the country's best commodities together that I didn't even explore yet and I don't think the price is that bad . It should be visited and explored for those of you who are crazy about the fresh food its for you !
😢I have to admit, my heart dropped hearing that white people are moving to a country that resembles black independence against Afrophobia, so I hope you respect the locals every second you are there, and give no Ethiopian children an inferiority complex by aggressing their unharmed beauty standards with rude Eurocentric comments. We are competing each other with inflation. Difference is minimum wage in Canada is $15. A full time worker can make $2,400 CAD monthly wage. Avg monthly wage in Ethiopia is $90-122 CAD. Imagine surviving on that with this type of inflation and a family to take care of. Ethio Gov who spent billions on war on civilians in Tigray and Oromia Region should be ashamed. I understand beggars may be annoying but look at it this way, you coming to their country on vacation are in a way better financial situation than they are. People may give you tips to ignore beggars but seeing children beg and work on the streets instead of being with family and in school broke my heart. If someone had a nice comfy home they wouldn't be on the street all day in the hot sun asking for change. Some are disabled and some are orphans and its their only form of income. Even people in better situations than them live in tin homes which is not ideal. I would make change at the small corner stores and make sure I had extra money to give those begging when I went out. You can even give some of your breakfast/lunch/dinner. The street kids go to restaurants to beg for left overs but they are often ignored. Even in hardship one thing you will see is Ethiopian people are always smiling, happy, positive, respectful because we are people of God whether Christian, Muslim, Waaqafenna, and we are family and community orientated. I hope that is one thing you can take away from your trip. Please enjoy❤
@@DaveMani My trick is to cut the given price to half and then go from there. That's when they realize that you mean business as much as the locals and fess up on the real selling price. Another tactic is to attempt to make them settle for your offer price by walking away. If they don't call you back, then the stated selling price before you walk away is the lowest they're willing to go. And if they call you back, they're capable of selling lower than their initial price to you. However, in order to get their lowest willing to sell price, you must cut their initial cost price to at least, half before walking away. And even when you come back right away because they didn't call you back, you may raise your offer by say 20% higher. You're using this as a leverage to make him believe that you really want to buy and he may meet in the middle. Welcome to to the international community of buying and selling outside of the United States 😂

🙄I freaked out for a moment when you were describing about how the food is expensive which relatively speaking is true !but tricky situation in ETH. is that you can find exact same commodity like vegetable, fruits and cereals in good price ; So all you have to do is just look around you and do a little research it may not be a fancy place but you can find the most fresh food around the corner with a little effort ...we take this free market thing too seriously I guess 😉😀By the way around here we don't even segregate foods organic inorganic that much and for weird reasons organic ones are cheaper again relatively speaking may be because they smaller in size or I don't know the real reason ;the market is that way for now so in that way and I think we are benefited in that one at least ….. Unfortunately for those imported packed foods the reason why they are very expensive is that one - locals/We don't use them much and two came in to the country with the high foreign currency ... speaking of market I salute Chinese people who live in Addis they have these insane big market around specific place called " Bole -Ruanda "market; It almost looks like the local traditional food market that no body really pay that much attention but amazing amazing place ,they bring all the country's best commodities together that I didn't even explore yet and I don't think the price is that bad .
It should be visited and explored for those of you who are crazy about the fresh food its for you !
The food prices we've paid was out fault. This was day one when we arrived and we just needed food now. We learned after that! Haha

We are competing each other with inflation.
Difference is minimum wage in Canada is $15. A full time worker can make $2,400 CAD monthly wage.
Avg monthly wage in Ethiopia is $90-122 CAD. Imagine surviving on that with this type of inflation and a family to take care of.
Ethio Gov who spent billions on war on civilians in Tigray and Oromia Region should be ashamed.
I understand beggars may be annoying but look at it this way, you coming to their country on vacation are in a way better financial situation than they are.
People may give you tips to ignore beggars but seeing children beg and work on the streets instead of being with family and in school broke my heart.
If someone had a nice comfy home they wouldn't be on the street all day in the hot sun asking for change. Some are disabled and some are orphans and its their only form of income.
Even people in better situations than them live in tin homes which is not ideal.
I would make change at the small corner stores and make sure I had extra money to give those begging when I went out.
You can even give some of your breakfast/lunch/dinner. The street kids go to restaurants to beg for left overs but they are often ignored.
Even in hardship one thing you will see is Ethiopian people are always smiling, happy, positive, respectful because we are people of God whether Christian, Muslim, Waaqafenna, and we are family and community orientated. I hope that is one thing you can take away from your trip. Please enjoy❤

My trick is to cut the given price to half and then go from there. That's when they realize that you mean business as much as the locals and fess up on the real selling price.
Another tactic is to attempt to make them settle for your offer price by walking away. If they don't call you back, then the stated selling price before you walk away is the lowest they're willing to go.
And if they call you back, they're capable of selling lower than their initial price to you. However, in order to get their lowest willing to sell price, you must cut their initial cost price to at least, half before walking away.
And even when you come back right away because they didn't call you back, you may raise your offer by say 20% higher. You're using this as a leverage to make him believe that you really want to buy and he may meet in the middle.
