Senegal is fucking beautiful country. Went there in 2016 and 2018. The best places with the coolest set of folks. Hands down best spot I have travelled to in West Africa.
This video was well presented, well narrated and well edited. Very short and informative. I enjoyed every bit of the history. I would like to believe that one day this city will come to life, it may not happen now but as long as Akon has this dream, then nothing is impossible. Senegal is indeed a beautiful country!!
Akon city would be a great place. I pray it becomes realistic soon. And the thought of how it felt walking through the door of no return.😢my heart sank!
I love how the African Renaissance Monument reminds us about the importance of a family - a strong and loving man, a supportive and feminine woman, and an enthusiastic offspring aspiring collectively towards one goal.
For $30mil. Lol. Wow. When people like you become leaders in Africa, neo colonialism will never stop. Senegal lost $30mil to Korea, and you like it? Awesome. Lol.
Hi Steven, I loved your video 💪 I have been following this project for a while. To the best of my knowledge I think the following is going on: I believe Akon has trouble with SAPCO, the Senegal ministry of tourism. They are claiming Akon did not follow up on the land lease agreement where Akon City is supposed to be built. Also, SAPCO has offered a piece of the same land to a hotel company which has got nothing to do with the Akon City project. The situation is upsetting to Akon and to some Senegal citizens, claiming that it is typical Senegalese bureaucracy & corruption which is holding Senegal back from a better economic future. Personally I hope Akon can do some damage control and get the project back on track again. Ghana supposedly also showed some interest in the Akon City project and is presumably willing to offer Akon some land to setup a similar project. The only one who can shed some light on the current situation is Akon himself. I hope he does an interview again soon to give us an update. It's true that the crypto token Akoin is not listed anywhere on crypto trading sites anymore. However you can get ahold of the token in a Stellar DEX like LOBSTR using the swap function.
What a great video, Steven. So much shown and said in so little time! I'm just coming from Cote D'ivoire and I definitely look forward to a visit to Senegal soon 💛
This video right here provided more context and I loved the cultural confusion to it. Thank you for the clarity and helping us understand the current status of Akon City.
people don’t understand how hard it is to open up a single legal business/ franchise in a lot of places in Africa let alone create an entire city. I think Alon should have kept the city simple and developed it over the years. That has worked in many African countries.
Steven has spectacular discovery videos with regards African entrepreneurship, more importantly I'm impressed with his humble approach. I appreciate you lil bro
I was looking forward to visiting the city. It is such a beautiful project all Africans are excited about this. I hope they have updates every quarter or so, that might encourage them to produce results knowing that everyone is watching.
With what I saw in this short video, I'm impressed by how things are in Senegal. Things generally look decent, and people seem to be generally well-educated and living relatively comfortably. Really happy for the Senegalese people and wish them prosperity.

No wonder people see this as a scam, no basic infrastucture to support any city development. How do you even start to build a city without a basic infrastructure. I think the guys should have done some basic research and taken note of many city developments in South Africa. In SA development such as Waterfall City, Steyn City, New City, Balwin Smart City and other many mega city projects are created with backup of government institutions, local government, financial institutions, development finances and investment banks. If you dont have a stable financial market and government infrastucture programme then such projects will never happen.

5:07 They're bragging that North Korea helped build the statue with slave labour in a absolute authoritarian country with no human rights. That's not something to brag about. They should have built it in their own country not just design it and let North Koreans actually built it.
Telling the reality of the situation is not bragging. Secondly, I think you need to understand that not every country in the world is opposed to working with countries you personally don't work with. It's simple. They wanted NK to build it and they got NK to do it. Simple. Every country in the world outsource certain tasks. Thirdly, Senegal can do whatever the fuck it wants. You have no authority to tell them what they should or shouldn't build. Thanks.

Dubai was a small fishing village in the 19th century. It took till the 21st century to get where the city of Dubai is at now. Now obviously engineering has significantly improved since the 19th century so technically it shouldn't take nowhere near as long to build Akon City but Dubai was funded by the state with unlimited funds. Akon doesn't have that kind of backing behind him for this project. I think people just need to have patience. Also have to bear in mind, the world came to a stand still in 2020 and the world economy is still suffering from it.
@@HM-ls5eg This is all obtainable information if you simply just research. Dubai was a fishing village. It was backed by a state. Akon is backed by investors nowhere near the level of an actual state. It's really not that hard to comprehend. It's not a rumour that you hear on the streets or a bedtime story. It's facts.
No you're getting it wrong. The Senegal rail news was all over the news when it was commissioned and this led to a debate on social media. Perhaps you were in your cave at the time. Firstly, go and find out about Nigeria's first light rail in Abuja that is the first in West Africa in 2016. Secondly the SGR. The kilometers of the Lagos to Ibadan and Warri Itakpe SGR projects and the kilometers covered. Thirdly, Lagos light rail was funded by a state in Nigeria not a federal government project like Senegal. Again Blue light project is way bigger because of the kilometers covered and the money spent is more because it's over the Marina waterway and the Phase 2 of the blue rail has commenced. Should I continue, the red line Metro has been completed and is far bigger than the Senegal project, again funded by Lagos state not Federal Government. The kilometers covered for the red line is way bigger. Please get your facts tight and stop talking on a topic you know nothing about. If you're so pained about the achievement of Lagos state, get your governor or President to do the same without IMF or Chinese loan.

What about the people who were ousted from their homes and other places of business. This project was initiated on 2018 and now the first phase was pushed forward to 2023?! Senseless!

This video was well presented, well narrated and well edited. Very short and informative. I enjoyed every bit of the history. I would like to believe that one day this city will come to life, it may not happen now but as long as Akon has this dream, then nothing is impossible. Senegal is indeed a beautiful country!!
30 million for that statue, RIDICULOUS. Then they had no plans on how to make the money back, insane.
Typical African logic 😆

Thanks for the information. I truly respect Akon and support him in this project. I wish he had more help but there is always hope!
Hi Steven, I loved your video 💪
I have been following this project for a while.
To the best of my knowledge I think the following is going on:
I believe Akon has trouble with SAPCO, the Senegal ministry of tourism.

Your creativity in content creating is simply best.
people don’t understand how hard it is to open up a single legal business/ franchise in a lot of places in Africa let alone create an entire city. I think Alon should have kept the city simple and developed it over the years. That has worked in many African countries.

If you dont have a stable financial market and government infrastucture programme then such projects will never happen.
akon is an idiot that’s why. he has no civil engineering or construction experience whatsoever
Who said no basic infrastructure? This place has two major cities right next to it

Thanks.

Hello Gambia 🇬🇲
I like how you put it “Akon was unrealistically ambitious” but it doesn't warrant the unprintable names hurled at him. He brought light to millions of people for God’s sake. Just one misstep and he's being crucified like this?
His major problem is funding and the location of the project
@@StevenNdukwu He is Senegalese and can't get the government or the people to help him. He made enough money to built his city himself. I know he has helped Africa. He still need to keep his word.
@@wb1738 You are clearly not the smartest person out there, to stay polite. I wonder why people feel owed anything. As if he couldn't have decided to just keep his money to himself and not help anyone. Now that there are complications (as with everything in life, let alone a project of this magnitude), you think you are making sense when you sit in your broke ass reality and say "He NeEdS tO kEeP hIs WoRd"... like stfu please.
He hasn't made anywhere close to building the city with his own funds he will go broke, that's billions of dollars
@wb1738 you sound entitled
Im shocked about what I saw after so many years of hype. I don't see half of the project coming to reality in the next thirty years. Thanks for the exposé, Steve.
And that was what you heard?... Or who told you that? 🤔
It's facts.
That statue is amazing
Great video. Very inspirational !
9:47 I love how seeing that made you tear up for our people. I’ll visit the island one day for sure.
Senegal got this train and never make noise about it,. But we no go hear word from Lagosian about their small blue rail. Smh
Omo, my guy say Na small😂
