You may have actually covered this later in the video, but on the topic of armor weight: At the extreme upper end of armor weight, your dodge roll degenerate to simply flopping onto the ground, and gradually picking yourself back up. Hilariously, this actually does some pretty decent damage to enemies, and there are builds where you'll sprint up to enemies and flop onto them to cause damage.

Wouldn't call it a surprise tbh, body flop build has been around since the base game (before dlc-exclusive items even existed). It was broken enough that it actually got directly targeted for a nerf iirc

The combat felt great, but the worlds and the story and pretty much everything else felt very drab and sterile to me. This was compounded by the fact that you are expected to see these envinronments over and over and over again to make your builds. That said i did finish the game multiple times with multiple builds, so it wasn't a bad game. I just hope they improved these aspects in the sequel.

Swamps of Corsus also added a lot more content to the Swamp biome itself. The version in the base game is quite noticeably unfinished. If you play the game for the first time with the dlc installed you likely wouldn't notice what was added. Great review as always.

It's funny that you mention the bosses on the bridge, Ixillis? As a boss more designed for coop, I usually play alone but in Souls-like I like the option to help people and in Remnant I also do it even with specific support builds , and this boss is much easier for me alone than in coop. 🤔
As you say, if they clean up the small flaws of the first game, the second can become a great game 🤞

The only thing about classes is that you will be locked out of a specific traits for that class which doesn't really affect play style or anything else. (but I think you can find those traits later and unlock them with a specific situation).
The boss on the bridge is Ixillis, that boss is a huge nightmare even in co-op but you can try to focs quickly on the one behind you to prevents him to spawn. This is something the game does really well: scaling bosses with the number of players so it always feels challenging.
One of the thing I love the most about Remnant is it's procedural level generation done well for once. Maybe you'll finish the game in 10hours but you can start another playthrough and get a totally different experience... Also, with friends, we really enjoyed this because we did multiple playthrough to be sure to see all bosses and biomes. It never felt exhausting... I think you start get that feeling because you play alone and need to finish the game ASAP 100% for your review.
The sequel promise to emphasize even more on this aspect and on the build diversity, if you play with the same character for hours and hours like me, you will get a maxed out character who is really powerful and can do pretty much anything so the sequel is taking another route with a dual class choice and more active powers to use (also, more rings to equip and armor bonusses will just be removed to be replaced with a system where you can chose your own bonus which really scares me because it will make the armors feel less unique, you will just equip the best possible one with the right weight without caring too much about what you're actually wearing.

The gunplay and gameplay were great but there was always something "budget" that turned me off, even after completing the campaign. I think I finally know what it is though; everything in the game is so *still*. They designed all these cool environments but vines and shrubs don't sway in the wind or react to gunshots, everything is so static except for you and enemies. It's fun to play but boring to watch someone else play.
Without movement and life, the environments -- while unique and lovingly crafted -- feel little better than a PUBG game, where all the assets were purchased from an online shop and slapped in.

there is something I feel like I have to add as someone who maxed out every trait to max level and got every single item and bested all difficulties including Hell with From Hell mod, 99% of the playerbase will ignore the story because its delivered kinda poorly but if you look for it, the computers mostly, find all the notes and written lore, its remarkably good, its actually really amazing in my opinion, this isnt for most people but just wanted to let everyone who read this know that if you look for good world building and lore there is in this game, is just all written, the characters are legendary on writing but when you encounter them they will let you down and its kinda a bummer, I hope the sequel does right for the characters in writing because they are actually very well written in the lore side of things

Good combat, bosses, and visuals. But the weaponry isn't very varied, new/useful weapons are slow to gain. Areas look neat but are generally boring slogs to gain crafting mats from breakables. The enemy types can be a little interesting but the "in between boss" areas are just boring places to do so. Every character has access to all the skill so it makes that choice pointless. Skills being tied to weapons is also silly since you have to switch weapons just to pop off an ability, then switch back to whats actually useful to shoot in the moment.
Nice lore but its presented in text logs just laying around. That is EASILY the MOST boring thing in gaming. What a waste here.
It's definitely a 'lite' game co-op and a bit of an annoying Souls game solo. Boss difficulty is usually tied to adds and not much else.
I hope they build on all of this to make something a bit meatier and interactive for the sequel. From the Ashes somehow just lacks meaningful depth.

You know I remember I launched it once or twice back then when the game became an EGS freebie. I got it, downloaded it, played less than an hour in total, and was so confused. On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals, the setting, and the overall package seemed solid - but not to my taste, strangely. On the other hand I just didn't get everything else - the mobs felt imbalanced, the combat felt rushed and impossible to enjoy solo (yup, I'm a lone wolf), and the focus on shooting over melee didnt' click with me at all. Fast forward to a week ago, and holy hell, now it just occupies my thoughts completely, and I'm so happy that I can't get it outta my head.
Everything now just feels so good - the traits system, the weapon impact, the melee & ranged combat, the level design (which is FANTASTIC!), and above all else - the game features an extremely addicting mix of things that I like so much: Lovecraftian horror, body horror, soulslike mechanics, impactful combat & shooting, roguelite traits system, and truly, deeply, terryfiying lore. Having watched Gemini Home Entertainment ARG beforehand added a ton of interest & satisfaction to my experience, and for me it was an extremely powerful hook when I saw some similarities to it in Remnant. The game immediately skyrocketed into one of my all-time favorites in the genre, and now I eagerly await for the sequel.

    • @BmikroB
      @BmikroB Год назад +1

@@arthurdent9281 Well, it most certainly is a better (and more comfortable) experience when played in co-op, because, say, mobs' aggroing at you in solo can be quite overwhelming at times. I assume people playing in co-op can just easily run-and-gun through most of the levels, while solo players like me have to much more carefully manage resources when slowly, methodically exploring the levels, dispatching mobs while trying not to aggro too much of them at once. This slower approach surely does increase the time to clear the area, but 'tis not a big trouble for me tbh.
Speaking of bosses, I haven't beat many bosses myself yet, but all the bosses I encountered are accompanied by constantly spawning mobs, so it is never a 1v1 (or at least 1v2) fight. But with enough (upgraded) firepower, dodging, and memorizing patterns, they all are doable (in fact, some are extremely satisfying to beat - even in these 'unfair' conditions).
So, I would say it really does look like a greater challenge in solo, indeed. But personally that doesn't stop me from playing it, and enjoying it when overcoming the odds.

I personally had a lot of fun with this game. I played it with two other players and by doing so it essentially cranked the difficulty by quite a bit, especially with bosses. Fun game but I recommend co-op.

This is a game I've wanted to play practically since it came out, but whenever someone leads with "coop" I'm immediately out. It's on sale right now and I thought about buying it, but... coop. Based on your review (and they normally fall pretty in line with how I feel about games), I'll get stuck on a boss and never get past it.

Quite enjoyed the game, played it coop with my girlfriend. But what soured my experience were some of the bosses. I'm not sure if they fixed some things but when I played them, some were absolutely HORRIBLE, especially the last one. I have rarely seen such a badly designed boss in all my years of gaming. I hope they changed something with that one.

I installed it after seeing it on the game pass. I’m not going to lie. I’m having a blast playing it. I noticed the new game and thought, Why not give the original a play….
I like the simplicity of the controls.
    It’s really user friendly.
(Says the 36 year old, dad of 5!) 😂
I thought this was a great review. & seeing as I’m by no means near 100% yet. I found this really helpful! 🤜🤛 Thank you!

Been playing this for the first time over the last month-ish and have had largely the same reaction. What does NOT feel great is the constant feeling that you are slogging through mud, even when "sprinting", which (to me) feels more like actual movement. That, combined with the stagger mechanic that is generated by contact with almost every enemy character, means you spend MOST of your time mindlessly dodging - which isn't practical with the heavier armor sets - until your Stamina is drained and then you're essentially at the mercy of the painfully slow reload mechanics, the agonizingly slow Dragonheart "heal" function, during which one is usually killed while trying to self-heal or revive a teammate, because of the 'mob' combat design the devs have chosen. I'm aware that there are traits and mods that can alleviate some of this, but IMHO, the ones I've maxed out so far do precious little to make the actual movement / combat / gunplay feel as smooth as something as "clumsy" as even S.T.A.L.K.E.R., let alone The Division or Destiny, which pretty much set the standard for movement / gunplay in FPS and 3PS games. If all this isn't changed significantly in the sequel, I can't see spending full price on it, as it makes the game feel more like a chore than entertainment.

Agreed with basically everything. I hate the amount of minions in certain boss fights, save for the ones where the minions only spawn when the boss is out of the arena. The DLC bosses are much better in that regard, with some of them not even having any minions. The final boss of the DLC was top notch in my book.

I really dislike the enemy scaling system, it's annoying and confusing. Basically makes upgrading your gear pointless.

This game at this pricing is definitely a steal. When in Souls i see a bunch of enemies im always annoyed (even when with friends) but in remnant i see a group im rushing in.
Dunno how I could describe this, but me noticing an enemy and shoot it first (staggering it), then immediately followed by coop friend's shot (finishing it off) with no word exchange between us... or seeing my friend handling the enemies in front, so I turn back as precaution and shoot a monster that's right behind my friend ready to attack.... god damn it feels so satisfying.

Fully agree on the bosses all just spamming adds on you. However one other complaint I'd add is that the melee weapons feel very shallow and undeveloped. They feel rigid and inflexible and their moves way too limited. It'd be nice if the melee weapons felt a bit more souls-like even though this game emphasizes more, doesn't mean it shouldn't do other aspects well too.

  • @rationaldemon195
    @rationaldemon195 4 месяца назад

For the coop aspect i could only attest that they infact didn't really did balanced the coop aspect, you either did nothing the whole time managing adds then wait because you can pull the aggro of the boss and mess up the tempo or burst down the boss so fast that the adds or any form of the bosses attack pattern has a chance to do anything as you skipped phases entirely, lack of build options and potential synergy builds wasn't really planned really well and the constant lack of ammo sharing made it hard for somebody to be efficient with their ammo which made adds as a defence for obtaining bullets pointless in a coop setting as you are more likely then not gonna lose more ammo then getting it back.
Traits were good but at the same time felt unimpactful on a coop setting as its hard to differiente from one build to another on what they excel at as they share practicly the same stats.
The random generation can be more annoying in coop setting as getting any form of differianting build style is met with re-rolls or finishing the game first, simply put if you want to get a set of armor you would have to pray to rng that it rolls in your first run or you would be stuck with the same type of build as your partner making it no point at all to have a coop partner.

The only thing I dont like about the game is the procedural generated worlds, makes it bland and repetitive. Games like this dont need procedural generated worlds keep that for survival games such as minecraft.

For new players do not start on hard mode. The first boss minions one shot you and the defend objective is almost impossible as you cant deal enough damage fast enough to stip the enemies from destroying the obj. Theres also way too many enemies for starting builds
