    People make fun of the silly faces they make, but that is how they struck fear and hesitation into their enemies! Imagine being an enemy tribe and coming upon a bunch of huge beefy dudes screaming and making demonic faces like this at you. You'd think they were completely batshit crazy and it'd scare the piss out of you

    I absolutely LOVE The power and energy you feel from the video, the solidarity, no one cracks a mocking giggle or thinks this is stupid, the harmony of emotions really pulls a person in. It's aweing and so empowering just watching it.

    • @thephaneron3676
      @thephaneron3676 2 года назад +12

      @whizkidliz Well you see, that never happens in New Zealand. Because men and women ballsy enough to perform the Haka *would dare NOT mock it* as it takes Mana (yes from the video games it was originally a Māori word for spiritual prowess and might that can be inherited, gained or lost not unlike a symbolic health bar) to perform 😉 If you fail to take it seriously or have only mimicked it, you've *never* performed a Haka. It's that simple really.

    • @nmatavka
      @nmatavka 2 года назад +4

      Absolutely not. This is a primal moment, a celebration of the triumph of life over death, no matter whether you're doing it near-naked, in rugby shorts, or in suits and ties. I have seen it done at many occasions and as long as you understand the lyrics, keep them close to your heart, you're never going to crack a mocking giggle. This is unofficially the national haka of New Zealand, and the theme is one that will resonate as long as somewhere, somewhen, life continues to triumph over death. Immortal and timeless, in other words.

    If you're wondering why they 'poke their tongues out'... The action is called a 'whētero'' (Fair-Tear-Raw) - the extension of the the tongue to intimidate traditionally meant, literally, "I will eat your head". The whetero is only performed by males as it also represents the penis. To Maori, the head is the most tapu or sacred part of the body. To the point where, even now, we get a whack from our grandmothers or aunties for putting a hat or a brush on the table that we eat food off of, or for sitting or standing on the pillows that we lay our heads on to sleep. So to eat your enemies head was both an insult and a way of absorbing the mana, or status, of that enemy after battle. You would not eat the head of a slave for example. No mana.
    Edit: No, we dont eat people anymore (except maybe in the uruweras 😂) Obviously. This practise ended about 200 years ago. Nowadays the whētero represents an act of defiance or a challenge.
    Edit 2: I am being 100% serious when i say we used to eat people. My mothers koro's (grandfather) Iwi/tribe (Te Rārawa) takes its name from the word "rāoa" meaning "to choke". We got our name for tricking and slaughtering another Iwi. There were so many bodies to eat that several warriors choked on the flesh of our enemies.
    It's not an exaggeration.
    Edit 3: to those asking how I know this. This is my full time job. I am a Māori language and performing arts teacher.

      @@hirakaiko5570 Well.That has been my perception. No culture is entirely flawless. But i do remember a Maori gentleman m as many years ago commenting that the Maori had to return to their original roots in order to address the social, economic, health and mental issues prevalent in his community at that time. He mentioned that he did not want his people to suffer the fate of African Americans. A people who have no country of their own. Total loss of original identity, cultures, languages, institutions and traditions. As an African American myself I was not insulted by his words. I do commend you for being so honest. May I ask why do you feel the way you do? Am I wrong in saying that it is a challenge for Maori women to break through firmly entrenched gender roles within the culture itself?

    "Ka Mate Ka Mate," comes at the end of quite a long thought process inside the mind of the composer Te Rauparaha, whose life is at the mercy of his enemy, the hairy man in the haka, Te Wharerangi. Te Wharerangi hides Te Rauparaha from a pursuing party that want to kill him, by placing him beneath his wife Te Rangikoaea. This position is an unthinkable position for a warrior to place himself. However the pursuing enemy respect the wife's position, because she is menstruating and this makes her sacred above all else. They don't look for Te Rauparaha under the woman, despite believing that Te Rauparaha was indeed underneath her. He is spared and the enemy leave Te Wharerangi and his people. Te Rauparaha emerges from the pit where he was hiding and performs "Ka Mate Ka Mate," for Te Wharerangi, who saves the life of his enemy. Ten years later, those pursuers return to Te Wharerangi and his people, and massacre many of them including Te Wharerangi. Why is "Ka Mate Ka Mate," the most famous export to leave Aotearoa? Because, it is about a man that lay down his life for his enemy. The Bible says, greater love has no man, than he lay down his life for his friend. I am 7 straight line to Te Wharerangi, and this is our story about our tupuna (ancestor). Many people have other versions, but this is the one held by the most direct line to this haka. If Te Wharerangi doesn't save the life of Te Rauparaha, there is no "Ka Mate Ka Mate." If history is ordered as it appears to be, the God did this. It is a celebration of life in the Sun (Son of God).

      When they say he hid under her skirt, they didnt mean literally.. he hid in a hangi pit which was dug into the side of the hill, she stood on nop, although this is tapu because it will take away ones Mana a Karakia (prayer)was said so TeRauparahas Mana would stay intact, the reason he hid under her skirt was because some who were among the hunting roopu were Tohunga (Spiritualist) who were tracking TeRauparahas Noa (spitual energy) and it was strong so the only way he could hide it was hiding under a womans skirt (hangi pit in the side of a hill) lol under her skirt she must of had a hoola hoop ball gown skirt on if u think that he was litterally under her skirt

      If the concept of a menstruating woman is sacred for the Maori culture, there is one more reason for me to admire your cultural background. In a world where women are taught to be ashamed of their gender specific traits and even they themselves use be-grating comments for their own nature pointing out the natural circle of life as "THAT time of the month...ugh, eww", I find inspiring that your ancestors held that circle sacred and worthy of respect. What a story! Thanks!

    1985. I was coming to the end of my NZ experience and had not met one Maori. Went down the pub, before getting the coach to Auckland and home. There was a sign behind the bar "No Spitting, fighting" and something else, forget. Centred my mind a bit, just wanted an ale or two :) Someone came over, a Maori, the place was packed with them. We chatted, on the third jug I went to relieve myself, then took a wrong turn out of the loo and ended up at a large marquee at the end of the cul de sac where my digs were. Music was coming, you could see flashing lights. I poked my head in the tent and asked if this was a private party or can anyone join ? "For 5 bucks, anyone can come in here" She replied, you also got two tickets for a pint of beer each. Brown Ale to be precise. I hadn't drunk a brown ale for many years. It was delicious, someone came over. FFS ! Talk about sociable ..... brilliant. We chatted I was introduced to about thirty Maori of approx 300, I was the only Pakeha in there :) I had one of the best times I'd ever had in my life. I woke up vaguely remembering the previous night before. Well I met some Maori :)
