    There are many dozens of factors that go into grip, hand size is only 1.
    I’m 52, I’ve been playing for 46 years. I play to an 8 hcp, and my seasonal range is from 5 to 9. All my life I’ve played a Standard grip. Recently, my hands have begun hurting, and I’m getting trigger finger in my left ring finger and pinky. It was suggested that I try a midsize grip. I chose the the golf pride tour velvet midsize plus 4.
    The results have been shocking. Traditionally I fight a death grip, the plus4 has reduced my grip strength. My club head speed increased from 107 to 113. My normal big fade is now a high baby fade. There is more carry distance, but total distance is roughly similar in the 290’s, so my shot shape has been optimized in my opinion.
    So for myself, my choice in a much thicker grip is a result in 1, lightening my grip to reduce pain and moving pressure points to end the trigger finger. My hand size had nothing to do with it as I wear a med/lrg glove. Certainly not large enough to justify the midsize plus 4.
    Everyone is different. Be open minded to what works for you.

    Thanks Gary...I have always been fitted in places that do not have the ability to change grip size, so I have been fitted with standard grips and order clubs with oversized grips. When I get the clubs, I don't hit them anywhere near as well. I have just recently figured out that depending on the grip, there can be 20-30 grams difference in grip weight, which significantly lowers the swing weight. The Winn DriTac 2.0 Oversized are similar to the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Standard in weight, which is the factory grip for most brands.

    I've been struggling with this exactly issue. I'm in my 50s and have been suffering with arthritis in my hands, so went to thicker grips and as tacky a model as I could find. With the midsize grips, I struggle with a fade to slice. I'd love to go back to standard to get more release, but I don't think my hands could handle it. I saw another RUclipsr test the JumboMax grips and he said you have to put the grip in your palm on your lead hand, which is a cardinal sin for most golf instruction... like you said, you really have to change your swing to use the really big grips. The video really shows the importance of swing weight as well as grip size.

    • @garymartingolf
      @garymartingolf  11 месяцев назад +1

      You may need more weight in the head, but if that’s going to make the mass too heavy, it maybe lighter mass shafts before you add thinking grips and more weight to the head.

    • @garymartingolf
      @garymartingolf  Год назад

      Crazy isn’t it, I’ve done Exactly the same! Order brand new ping irons, had them sent grip less and fitted some midsized myself as it was cheaper than their up-charges, now my swing weights are C1 when they should have been pings standard D5 for 1/2” longer.
      Definitely something to check and get right, it will make a difference. You could maybe google the weight of grip the club originally had, and try to find a midsized grip the same weight. Apparently, Winn do light midsized grips.

    Jumbomax ultralite in XS are actually 43G grips, so lighter than most standard/midsize grips which are usually 10G heavier generally before any extra wraps of tape so possibly about 15G difference. I have the Jumbomax Ultralite Str8fit XS fitted on all my clubs after playing midsize for years without having any prolonged decent consistency from them, slightly bigger than a normal jumbo, I play to 3 H'cap, massively improved my all round game. a slight decrease in overall swing-weight if anything and i can feel the club head better now, cheers 👍

      @garymartingolf yea, I'm in process of changing grips on irons. My fitter didn't test grips but threw in at the end that he was going to add 3 wraps to make them more midsized. I tested and love the midsize MCC +4 in my 7 iron and am going to change entire set now.
      I was just wondering because I had spent a bit of time weighting my shirt irons that felt too light and was wondering if I'm going to have to go down that road again.

    Getting a Takomo ignis 5 wood (which comes with 3 seperate head weights) (15g 20g and 25g) so if i put a oversize grip on i should increase the standard 15g to the 25g??

      I’d say the 20g for midsized and 25g for jumbo to keep the swing weight as close to standard as possible. Its hard to guess as all grips weigh different, but if we was taking calculated guess, that’s the best I could do

    Gaz, I find the grip (for me anyway) the most important part of the club. I get all my feel from the grip and pressure which really starts the tempo of my swing. The current system sucks for trying grip size and I want to go a thicker grip (midsize + n-number of wraps) but literally no good way to test it. HELP?!

    You can alter grip size without increasing weight to any real degree , a heavier grip would actually make the club ‘feel’ lighter .
    Its much more noticeable with shaft changes , put a sub 120 shaft in a wedge and it may carry further but it’ll feel like a brick on a stick .
    Personally i dont think different size grips help with hooks or slices or much else apart from arthritis or hand size it should just be what you know and like and brings a confident feel to your hands .
    Its just another rabbit hole for rabbits .

    The golf club is a tool designed to propel a small ball. As with everything in life the more experienced and better one gets the better tools are required. Mr Average will use a £5 hammer to hammer nails, an experienced carpenter would use a balanced top notch £100 hammer.
    All this fitting and swing weights ect may be beneficial to the elite but to your average hammer swinger does it really make that much difference?
    I would say Cat1 golfers and better may benefit but hey what do I know apart from how to make a banging cuppa ☕️ 😊

      That’s an absolute fantastic comment, and it’s a question I want to answer, by taking a high handicapper for a tour level fitting. It may prove not to have the result I had with my driver fit, but I’d love to know what it would do.

    • @mikecooke2357

      Personally I think it is more important for a less skilled golfer as top pros can manipulate ill fitting clubs more . Just watch tour pros hitting 'box set clubs' with whippy shafts , they still score under par !! A less skilled player will be slicing or hooking for fun, with wrong shaft weight and swing weight and thinking its just his swing !! Trust me i was that guy 😂

    • @DogsHealthShop
      @DogsHealthShop Год назад +1

      @@mikecooke2357 I can absolutely see your point and would really love to see not a high handicap player but a mid teen golfer who has a certain level of basic skill and club control along with a decent understanding of the game. A high handicap player may gain massive results just because the fitting clubs are a massive upgrade on his/her/they/them/he/she/it’s daily gamers.
      Would be interesting 🤔
