At the end of this golf season Andy, I was visiting with my son, who is a very good golfer, and talking over some of our various golf rounds we shared this summer and fall. It was interesting to hear his take on where he thought i was dropping shots during my golf rounds. The take away from our discussion was that my insistence on playing a 3w and my low flying 21* UW was consistently costing me 3 or more shots a round. He detailed a number of shots over the last several months and all of the shots from the last few weeks. He was right and I wasn't seeing the problem as clearly as he was as an observer.
So . . . my 3W and 21*UW came out of the bag and in went a TM mini driver for 'shorter than driver' tee shots. My 3w off the fairway was replaced by an easy to hit 5w. And my low flying 21*UW was replaced with a higher flighted 7W. I know, 2 clubs came out of the bag and 3 went in. But i was only playing 13 clubs so i had the room for the addition.
Results . . . well, i am finding myself in much better places with the Mini, 5 and 7 and while i only have a couple rounds under the belt with the change, those two rounds were a couple of my better ones. So I'm hoping this is a trend.
Thanks for your average golfer insight.

From one Andy to Andy, totally agree with you here 100% ………….. for me a 50° wedge short /medium distances 120 yards down to around the greens. Watched another of your vlogs dropped the 3 iron , 7 wood in the bag ………fairways, distance, off the tee, punch shots unbelievable and putting. Shortened the stroke now making more putts and never leave way short. My advice always play what works for you, forget what your mates say in a group “ that’s a 7 /8/9 iron all day long” whatever works for you just use it !! Again keep up the fantastic work , we all need to keep tweaking 😉

Great advice Andy! I’m nearly 60 and have only played for 2.5 years, taking up the sport after finishing tennis. Like you, 12 degree driver (choking down on the shaft) 7 wood, 4 & 5 Ping G430 hybrids plus Sim2 Max 6 iron through to 54 wedge

Really enjoyable video. For me, your most important comment, other than the stress on confidence, was 'learning to drop the ego a bit'! That has allowed me to prioritise fairway over distance with the driver, and also to be far more realistic on what distance I can achieve with all clubs. I always remember the comment by Gary Player saying that the most common mistake of all amateur golfers in all situations from tee to green is leaving the ball short!

Brilliant Andy, and quite agree. This past year I’ve added a 9 wood to my bag and over Christmas I’ve ditched the 48 and 52 degree wedges in favour of a 50 degree for the same reasons you state. I carry a 56 for the sand only. Today I’ve picked up a Paradigm 7 hybrid for a bargain price so will game 7, 6 and 5 hybrids. My longest iron will be the 8 iron. I’ve never had a 3 wood, but do use a 5 wood. Essentially, trying to make the game as easy for me as possible!

Even good for chipping, as mentioned in the video. Also my game is little different as I am lefty so in some situations my game has it's own challenges. After over 20 years away from the game, I was only lucky to break 100 way back then) My brother brought me back to the game. I am 59 now (and with some similar stubbornness/denial). the longest iron in the bag is my 8 iron. I picked up a 44.5 in. shaft but I use a 10.5 loft (I will use the TM Mini 11.5 as well on a windy day).
5,7,9 wood along with 5,6,7 Hybrid 8,9,pw,45,50,54 & putter is the setup now. I will swap the woods for a 2,3,4 Hybrid (All Ping G430 Max except the Mini) setup on windy days. Picked up a GC3 as a retirement give and went to school. but between you and Danny Maude in 6 months I've been able to fairly consistently get into the 90's. I was losing 10+ strokes to lost balls alone a lot of the time. these days it's usually 3 or less. Fairway finders is the perfect label, Thank you for the advice,

Thanks for these tips and all preceding over the past year! Yup, I've moved to one wedge (56 for me) and a 5H; haven't gone the mini-driver yet as I'm pretty confident with mine -- at 12.5* loft along with one other change I think you mentioned sometime in '24 -- fewer clubs. My 3W is no longer in my bag nor are a few minimal distance irons. I'm down to driver, 5W, 7W, 5H, 6i, 8i, PW, 56* and putter,,,and at the end of the season broker 80 a few times. Can't wait for spring!

Wild watching this and I've started to do all 3 of these things. It's definitely helped me.
    1. Relying more on my 56.
    2. Choking down more on my Driver to find the fairway more consistently
    3. Added a 26.5 degree 5 hybrid to my bag.
It's been really big for me. However, I think the biggest thing for me is course management. I try to play myself into positions where I can use the 4 or so clubs that I'm most confident in whenever I can. Great video, cheers.

I have been working toward your tips for a while now and appreciate your advice. My driver is a full sized head, 14 degrees of loft, and 42" total length. with this a rarely miss the fairway. While I still carry both a pitching wedge and a sand wedge things improved when I went back to my 37" length clubs. My army induced back injuries make it hard to get normal length clubs low enough. I also now finally the hang of using a hybrid after 2 years of trying. The times that I succeed with it I hardly feel the club is striking the ball. It is so pleasant to hit with.

I agree with the 1st and 3rd point. I've dropped my lob wedge(58 or 60 degree) and decided to use the sand(54 degree) wedge for everything 100 yards and in. And it has instilled a lot of confidence in my short game as well as consistency. Also, it lightened my bag as I carry when I play.

This past season I've made some changes to my Mizuno ST-Z driver. I've cranked up the loft to the maximum of 12.75°, added a JumboMax grip, small size, and gripped it down an inch. Combined with the single plane swing it's made a difference in my driving game. I'm hitting it about 220 yards, not bad for a 70 year old.

Very sound advice Andy. I'm 74, 7 h'cap, my regular partner (same age) is 15 h'cap. I've kept my key stats for over 40 yrs and have been keeping his for 15+ yrs (numbers don't lie). He's often asks for advice but rarely took it...until this year. We both play the same woods so I fitted my 3 wood shaft into his 5 wood head - he's hitting more fairways now. I convinced him to drop his 3 wedges & replace with a 54, & only change his landing spot to regulate pitch & chip shots - he's putting better because he's nearer the hole more often! He also dumped his 4,5,6, & 7 irons replaced by a 7 & 9 wood. For the first time in years, he's looking forward to next season, with only 9 clubs in his bag.
Conclusion: As others have said, confidence is gold, & better to have the right, not the most tools for the job!

Another great common sense video. I do something very similar to what you are doing. I switched to a 12 degree driver. I keep the standard length but choke up the vast majority of the time. It is a fairway finder. My 25 degree hybrid is my favorite club. I have a ton of confidence in it and I am very consistent with it. Finally, I play 50, 54 and 58 degree wedges. I use the 54 whenever possible and the 58 only when absolutely necessary. I hit the 50 for 100-110 full shots and for chipping around green when I need a lot of run and want the ball rolling sooner as opposed to later. At any rate, another good video.

I started playing golf again 3 years ago after a long hiatus. My set of clubs is/was modest & it's from 2001. Due to a lack of funds & with the goal of trying to make the game easier, I decided to replace some of my old clubs with modern alternatives. My old set was very traditional, it consisted of a Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood, 3-9 irons, SW, PW, and a putter. The process of replacing clubs with the best bang for buck was actually a really good thing as it forced me to really think about what I needed. First, I bought a 22-degree PXG hybrid, and my scores improved immediately as I now had a long-ish club that was easy to hit off the tee and off the deck when needed. Then I got a Wilson Chipper, which helped no end around the green, a 19-degree hybrid, and just recently a new putter. So I reached many of the same conclusions that you did in my own way, though your advice certainly helped. Eventually, I'll replace all of my irons and Driver. I haven't worried about brands, I have mixed and matched, my original set was Maxfli, my 22-degree hybrid is PXG, my 19-degree hybrid is Cobra, and my chipper and putter are Wilson.

Next I found by going from a 10.5° driver that I loved to the exact same driver in a 9.5° head help tremendously in distance and accurately off tee. Still using a Cobra S9-1M offset from 2009. Last thing that helped my game was to take the fairway woods out of the bag and go with all hybrids 2-gw.

Interesting. On wedges I carry PW at 43* GW at 48* and SW at 56*. For chipping I use only the PW or one length 21* hybrid. Have been using an 11 degree driver for several years and can adjust it up to 12.5 which I do on wet (after significant rain) courses as I get no roll out. As for hybrids, carry 21* and 24*, both are single length same as my 6 iron. The 24* is a substitute for a 5 iron, I use the 21* for long chips and when I need a low shot (under a tree). I also carry a 7 wood at 21* which I prefer, but not able to hit the lower trouble shot with 7 wood. As an older senior (77) I carry a 5 wood (no 3 wood) and don’t carry that extra wedge so I still only have 13 clubs in my bag. And I am an average golfer with an 10.8 index.

The wedge idea is valid only if you have the time and inclination to practice quite abit to dial in distances with different swings with one wedge. For most other average golfers who don't have the time or perhaps the inclination to practice as much because, you know, they are average golfers, having several wedges with well know full or near full swing distances is actually a far easier route to take. I carry 3 wedges but only use two most of the time. The 58 degree wide sole wedge is exclusively a get of of sand trap jail for free card. The 53 degree is a 105 yard dagger and the 48 degree is a 115 yard dart. I dont consider the 44 degree pitching wedge a wedge even though is labeled that way. It's a 9 iron for all intents and purposes. I don't have to guess at the distance when needed for full swings and I do practice just enough to hit greens from shorter distances with the 53 or the 58 if close enough. I love that you pointed out that there's more to shortening your driver than simply cutting down the shaft. Choking down isn't consistently the same and simply cutting an inch to inch and a half off the length doesn't usually work well in and of itself. You almost always have to add loft, sometimes lie adjustments and head weight. A shorter driver built correctly almost always leads to increased fairways hit and I've never built one for an average Joe who didn't decrease their scores after. As for hybrids I play a 22 degree but I also carry a 21 degree 3 iron. I hit both very well but the hybrid hits much higher and from worse lies. The iron is great in the wind, off the tee and from tighter fairway lies where I want or need more run out. There's room for both in the bag so why not? I switched from a 19 degree hybrid to a 17 degree 4 wood. Haven't carried a 3 wood in 25 years. If my driver wasn't working there was nothing a 3 wood was going to do to correct for that so it was always a losing proposition. 42 inch 17 degree 4 wood is money. While there's no one size fits all solution for everyone I do think if more golfers would reconsider what they think they should use even though they've never tested alternatives they would score better. At the very least you're getting people to ask themselves, well, what if I did this?

I've been using a 5h since my 2nd year golfing (going into my 5th) and it's been my absolute fav. I've got about 90-91 mph clubhead speed with it and still, it's just the best. The only "problem" is you're often getting a crazy flyer lie but still, highly recommend to most golfers

Interesting video as I'm 75 now and play a Wilson Triton driver set to 12.5 degrees and a 25 degree Hippo 7 wood that seems to perform miracles at times. The Triton finds the fairways for me and gives me good length, also. My problem is that I tend to think "hit" rather than "swing" at times. Executing a good swing is what makes for good contact for me and I also need to realize that I'm not 25 anymore.
BTW, I'm in central Florida and I find it fascinating that your course has sheep grazing while you're playing. Here, we have Sandhill cranes and gators with the occasional water moccasin but no sheep. Best regards.

..Curious if anyone plays both a 7 and a 9 wood?(is it a good idea) If so, how has gapping been between the two? Is it worthwhile having both?
Have seen your video played best round on how versatile a 7 wood 195 yards I bought one love it. Wondering if the 9 becomes redundant?
about me: Im 65 h/c 25 at my course in Australia .80 driver ss, low spin and low ball flight, miss is a steeper pull slice, play in PNW, soft conditions, tight, tree lines courses with small greens.

I've taken tips from you in the past and done well. I reduced my bag to 10 clubs now and gained confidence with those. I took your review on the Big Bertha 5 wood to heart and tried one. It is now my goto fairway club. I turned it up to 20 degrees and took my favorite Cobra 7 wood and turned it up to 24. I hit both much better than irons or hybrids and I'm finally scoring in the 90s consistently and only a few putts away from breaking 90. I also went to 1 wedge, a 56 degree Cleveland full face cbx. As you may remember from my previous comments, I still rock my Halo XL irons. I never let ego get in my way, I want to have fun and make it easy on myself. My LAB df2.1 puts that to the test! Love the advice. Have a great season!

I've hit some beauties with 4 and 5 hybrid the past two years. Trouble is, I've also hooked too many of them, especially the 5. The only clubs I ever hook, other than the occasional accident.
My Cleveland HyWood may be my most reliable, other than 8-pw.
Launch is no problem my 10.5° set at 11° on driver, but would love to try a 12.

Andy you talk about building your fairway finder driver with 44 inch shaft , but did you increase the head weight to bring it back to original swing weight ..? As you loose swing weight by shorting the shaft .

I also play 1 wedge for almost all chips or pitch shots and it's a 52 degree mizuno S23 but I do also carry a 56 for bunkers. I haven't went to a shorter shaft in my driver but may consider it. I don't have any problem hitting fairways and keeping it straight off the tee. And the one club in my bag that's been great for me is also a 25 degree Mizuno ST max that I have set at 27 that I use for longer par 3s and approach shots from around 160 I love it

I'm 78 and just shot my age a couple of months ago at a course that usually eats me up. I'm still high over it. On average I shoot 85-90. It wasn't the woods or irons that did it, but my putter and some good chipping. I only hit the ball + - 180 yds off the tee. That said I just bought a Wilson Launch Pad 2 hybrid iron set and all the fairway woods and hybrids. Guess you could say I'm chomping at the bit for next season or when we get some weather breaks.

  • @markspence5288

Great vid mate. I’m off 4. Best thing I ever did was replace my 5 iron with a hybrid. I go from 3 wood to carry 3 hybrids. All I would disagree with is the wedge info. I think golfers regardless of handicap should play “more club” so instead of hitting a full out 54 u hit a knock down 50. U need to have the arsenal with wedges in any position.

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  Месяц назад

Thanks Mark, hybrids are a real eye opener for me this last year and hope they work this season. I agree regaining a full shot with wedge but why not use a 3/4 PW rather than have another wedge?

    • @markspence5288
      @markspence5288 Месяц назад

@ I think it’s all down to yardage that u have in to the green. I’m really poor with wedges. Pitching and inside 100 yards is my worst part of my game. I just think that u should get used to getting good at all distances. With stronger lofted PW that a lot of players carry (me included) if u just carry a 54’ wedge I think it restricts you. Ur relaying on a lot of up n downs. That if we’re honest a lot of golfers struggle with. Why not carry enough wedges to hit the green from say 110 out giving u a birdy put. Also I think golfers should just aim for the center of the green. Ignore the flag if u hit centre of greens ur never going to be 20 yards from the pin. Just my opinion. Not a criticism of what u have put out
