- Washington, DC, has a little bit of everything for history buffs and foodies, but it's Ben's Chili Bowl, which sits on the historic U Street once known as Black Broadway, where the two come together. Insider's Lisa Paradise stopped by for a bite of the chili half-smoke: a half-pork, half-beef sausage smothered in homemade chili crafted from a generations-old secret family recipe that has remained popular for so many generations it was named the city's signature dish.

This Must-Eat Chili Dog Is Washington D.C.'s Signature Dish | Legendary Eats
There's just more than taste. Ben's chili bowl is a landmark. I hope it stays, to tell us all, That time passed but history remained.
@David Hester Are you talking about the chili? Cuz straight chili don't give you toots, beans do.
Yes, and it's true that everyone is welcome. They even created a vegan chili dog option for the new hipster residents.
Yessir
First time I saw a good comment on Insider.
Just kidding. Or am I?
@David Hester aoc has a head like a llama
We need more places like this back again. Family owned, community, great food, and especially love.
And we need to make them hipster and blogger restricted
Ime the mom and pop places are where I get the worst customer service....they often think bc they have no corporate overlord they can do whatever and treat customers however.
It IS on an establishment to not rest on their reputation...but we as customers need to regularly support such places.
Agreed
Also black owned
I love this place. The half-smoke with chili, mustard and onions (well, let’s be honest... 2 of them) is to die for. The staff really is friendly, and I love supporting family businesses. And it’s living history.
Lies again? MUC MUD
@@NazriB What??
You're so lucky to have these locally.
@@henryottis295 Well, I currently live around 5000 miles from it… :(
@@tookitogo
Oh, it sounded like you were a regular there !
Too bad, it's not in my neighborhood either, but I agree with you about supporting family businesses.
When I visited D.C. while in college I went to Ben's for a half-smoke certainly but mainly for the history. Iconic joint and a must-visit for sure.
What did it taste like is it the best hotdog in America
@Greg Siwek Too long ago to describe it today but as for it being the best in America? Nah. That's just subjective. I'm sure lots of D.C. locals might say this but everyone in New York and Chicago would make this claim as well. Personally I love a basic sauerkraut and mustard dog but my favorite style is a Carolina slaw dog.
@@tosht2515 ok thank you sir , for the explanation, and your knowledge.
I'm half asleep, and stoned from my wake and bake, and just started sipping my coffee here in NYC.... all I read was "I went to bens for a half-smoke, it was an iconic joint".... me: worddddd, must have been good getting one of them chili dogs, after blazin up. lmfao. Then I realized the Iconic JOINT was the place, and the half-smoke was the dog. Also like you said in your reply.... me as a New Yorker would argue this dog isn't anything crazy... looks good sure... but best in the world? Come on... Also, it's a hot dog lol... it's not like it's a burger, or pizza, or bagels... things that are actually hard to make... or can have a certain level of quality to them... hot dog is sausage in a bun... your sausage can be great yeah... but the only star here, or the only thing that could highly vary in quality from horrible to incredible would be the chili...
@@batman4452 dude, just the difference between an all beef hot dog and one made with chicken and pork or turkey is huge. It way more than just the chili.
I’m a Washingtonian and we were learning about this DC landmark in our history class, yes Ben chill bowl been through it all it was here before they went underground to build them trains, it was here before a lot of this new dc buildings, condos etc but I been here for 21 yrs and I Haven’t been to bens chill bowl😬

I thought I was the only one... she skipped some key steps...lol
This place is great. Their milkshakes are worth trying as well.
No lies there. The first time I had Ben's some 13 years ago I was told that the shake was a must try. Between the half smoke, the chilli cheese fries and that strawberry shake I was almost in a food coma on the ride back to my friend and his wife's place. So good. I can't wait to come back.
Unless you are white, right?
@@goprodog4304 Nope. The two times I was there I saw all nationalities, races etc. in there enjoying good food with no issues. If you're bothered by them saying black lives matter then you miss the point of that statement. It's not that black lives matter more than any other lives. It's saying that black lives matter just as much. Plain and simple.

“Having worked in restaurants to pay his way through university”.... oh boy wouldn’t that be a delight if that were still viable.

@Cody CC-2224 True, bro! Cause I am Georgian, currently stationed by my employer in DC. 👍🇬🇪🍷
Nice, a Georgian and an Armenian have tried Ben's Chilli Bowl. I wonder if an Azerbaijani has tried it. That way, Ben's Chilli Bowl has had customers from the three South Caucasian nations.

Had a conversation with Virginia Ali today. Went to DC for the sole purpose of getting a half-smoke. Was trying to relay with fam but didn't end up working out. I don't think either of the kids were there, but Virginia showed up towards the end.
She came in talking and smiling, very small in stature but very proud in tone. She talked to me about the boom box there and complimented me on my longboard, followed by the comment "Oh be careful now, you could get yourself real messed up on that thing".
Absolutely made my day. This woman is a national landmark.
