Many decades ago we spent a week in Paris. My husband went to work every day and I walked everywhere until my feet complained and I got a taxi back to the hotel. I bought lovely silk for my wedding dress near Sacre Coeur.
What a great way to visit Paris! I still love wandering around on foot - there’s always something new to see and it’s such a walkable city. I’m so glad you were able to experience Paris that way!

I love love love fabrics! Come from a family who historically sew their own clothes. I sadly don’t sew much. But I do have a dressmaker who I do take fabric that I find and like and he makes me stuff to wear. I like to look different and stylish. And not always impressed with mainstream fashion. I am from South Africa 🇿🇦 thank you Sarah!!!! Love your video 🌸
Great info on fabric shopping in Paris--my favorite place to find really unique pieces. I wanted to mention a couple of places that are a bit pricier--both in the Montmarte area near Sacre Coeur, as well. My fabric budget is tight, but these two are lovely for just picking up a super special trim or sewing notion. The first is Frou Frou--right around the corner from Tissu Reine--cutest place!! Lots of quilting fabric as well, thousands of buttons in those fun plastic tubes, and gorgeous knitting supplies, too. The other is Mokuba--a japanese trim shop---walking in the door literally takes my breath away! The minimalist way that the ribbons and trims are arranged on clear walls of rods is just beautiful!
Still have fabrics that I purchased in Paris back in the 1990s. Tissus Dam was my favorite, very high end and expensive. Doesn't exist anymore. This is a great tour, thank you.
I was drooling over all the beautiful fabrics! I would especially enjoy seeing the shop with all the trims. I know about Liberty fabrics from watching videos by some ladies in the UK and Australia.
Thank you for a balanced excursion. The architecture and celebrated buildings in Paris astonish me no matter how many times I see them. And the shopping fulfills my thrill of fabric shopping, but doesn't cost me a penny. (Nor does it add to my already sizable stockpile)
Just found your video and I'm so glad I did, as my husband and I will be heading to Paris for a month in September and never thought of buying fabric and now I will. The timing is perfect as I just found a fabulous seamstress where I live. Can't wait to go fabric shopping in Paris and thank you for making this video - so informative!
I have been to Marche St. Pierre and Tissus Reine and would love to visit Paris again. The sooner, the better. In spite of having really, really enough fabric.....
Thank you so much Sarah Naomi for mentioning the BRENÉ top 🫶 ! I love all the places you mentioned and didn't about Tissus de rêve ! I like to go to TissuMarket but it can be a bit more expensive (18 Rue du Sentier, Paris 8). I would also add the "Modes et Travaux" shop. I believe this is the same as Coupons-Saint-Pierre but the location is different (10 Rue de la Pépinière, 75008 Paris) and they also sell patterns. Have a beautiful day 🌞 !
Thank you Monty! I've got 4 BRENÉ tops planned on my sewing list this summer - it's such a beautiful summer staple and so simply classic ❤️ Thanks for mentioning the TissuMarket shop too, I didn't know about it and I'll have to check it out!
Thank you for your lovely video. It was really interesting to follow you through the various establishments, and learn all about them. In our Country, we have a wonderful textile supplier called "Waste Centre", and they colour code all their textiles, making it very enjoyable to visit them. because visually it's really beautiful to see each colour and it's various shades and tones, whether printed with patterns or plain. They do also present them in categories of kind of textile, for example upholstery is separate from curtaining etc. Wishing you many hours of joy and success.
You have so amazing fabric shops in Paris! Thank you so much for this video, i will check them out next time. The first time i went to the Sacre Coeur area i was to afraid to enter one of the shops, because i don't speak french. So silly of me.
Oh so jealous!! We have practically zero in person shops where I recently moved 😥 (Unfortunately we couldn't choose location based on in person fabric shops!!) But absolutely whenever we travel the first thing I look for is fabric shops in the area so I can scoop up some souvenirs!
I'm sorry to hear that you don't have many fabric shops to go to. It's sometimes essential to be able to see the fabric in person to understand it, but I'm glad you can travel and what great souvenirs!
Love the fabrics you purchased; especially the silk -- one thing I've learned is if you see something you later think about, you should get it; you won't regret it! Also loved the clothes you made that you modeled. You are a real seamstress and that's a talent.
My favorite shop is Léonie pique,pique,138 rue du théâtre Paris 15ème because all the fabrics are bio ethic and during the sales till july, the 23,the prices are fine.Thank you Sarah for all your tips adresses.
I might have bumped into you! I was fabric shopping in springtime too. Great shops, will definitely go back. I live in Antwerp, Belgium so we're lucky to be able to drive to Paris.
Hello Sarah, thank you for such a lovely video and the links to all the fabulous fabric shops. I will look forward to watching your videos. Have a wonderful week-end.
Thanks Sarah. Would have loved to hear your recommendations last year. I was in Paris in 2024 for a little stopover to shop fabric. It was an amazing shopping experience near Sacre Coeur. I got some beautiful fabric from Sacred Coupons! Next time the deadstock stores!
Hi, great video ! I've never been to Sentier for fabric shopping although I konw some of the store you mentioned. My favorite place to shop fabrics is Stop tissus in Couronnes, just near le quartier chinois de Belleville 😅 so I can buy chinese food at the same time 😂
I live in the South of France and we dint have many fabric shops in my area, and now that Toto is closing its even harder! I go to 2 good shops when I go to Toulouse but Paris is the best, wish I could get there more often! I love Reine and Marché St Pierre and there is a fab tiny haberdashery store near Marché St Pierre. I also go to Tissus Laīk which is on a tiny street, my friend Pascale has a fab range of Indian printed cottons, many ither cotton fabrics I use for the products I make for my shop plus loads of upholstery fabrics and gorgeous cushions and quilts.
I'm so sad that Toto is closing soon too, it's such a great shop. I've never been to Tissus Laïk, thank you for mentioning them and I'll go check it out soon. Enjoy the summer in the South of France!
RUclips recommended this video and I am not even looking at fabrics but your energy and passion shines through. I just wanted to share with you in case you didn’t already know. Your videos are playing back on my 1080p TV with slight pixelation. This could be due to the software you are using. Just some feedback! Keep up what you are doing!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video even if you weren't looking for fabric shopping content! Thanks for the feedback about the playback quality, it's good to know.
Merci beaucoup pour la visite. Grâce à vous, je prends un cours de français cet été ici à San Francisco. J'espère visiter vos magasins de tissus à l'avenir. ... My teacher giggles at my Spanish accent in French, but I keep trying. One of these days ...
Oh ! Je m’en réjouis ! That makes my day, thank you for telling me! And yes, French and Spanish can be so similar, the brain gymnastics switching to a new pronunciation must be hard. Bon courage et bon apprentissage !
II would find it impossible to choose just a few fabrics! Nothing makes me happier than to browse shops for inspiration. Thank you for this and I look forward to more videos. New subscriber.
Hi Sarah, I also loved all those fabric stores and bought fabric from each store when I was there last year. We are thinking of going again this year, we absolutely love France. Nice fabrics you bought.
Wonderful guide, thank you. Makes me want to visit these shops (I live nearby). For non-Europe/UK people, it's probably worth making clear that the ground floor of a building here in France is called rez-de-chaussée (RDC). The 1st floor (premier étage) is one storey up (not the ground floor level). I hope that helps :)
wow I love those fabric stores, and all the notions inside the store too. my next trip to Paris is to visit some of the fabric shops. I make tote bags and small purses. Its hard to locate zippers and hardware for tote bags, that are not expensive. Merci Beaucoup
I adore Paris. I had the privilege of studying there for six weeks in 2018. It was amazing. I loved every minute of it. How did you end up living there? I’d love to hear about how you found a job and managed to live there full time.
I'm so glad you were able to experience living here and that you had a good time! I'm thinking of filming another Q&A video soon and I'll keep this question in mind!
Great video, thank you Sarah. I will save it for my next visit to Paris! Last time I was in Montmartre I was struck about how expensive all the precuts have become. I didn’t think there were real bargains anymore, to be honest. But of course I did buy something 😊. My tip for you is Mahlia Kent. I visited her store for the first time and came home with two beautiful fabrics. I didn’t buy of the bolt, just from the remnants, because her fabrics are expensive. But also unique. Real treasures. Greetings from Amsterdam.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you’ll be able to come visit Paris again soon! I’ve never visited Malhia Kent because their fabrics look beautiful, but so expensive and I’m afraid I’ll be tempted! But good tip, I didn’t know they sold remnants there too 😊
I love love love fabrics! Come from a family who historically sew their own clothes. I sadly don’t sew much. But I do have a dressmaker who I do take fabric that I find and like and he makes me stuff to wear. I like to look different and stylish. And not always impressed with mainstream fashion. I live in Chicago and quality fabric and notions are hard to find. The most well known store sells to much synthetic fabric and mainly for crafting. I was in Paris for three months. I did not venture into the fabric shops but I did see that they were very busy. In the flea market in Saint-Ouen there was a button shop that sold the most beautiful buttons I have ever seen.
Oh man, that must be frustrating not being able to shop for quality fabric in person near you. Thank you for suggesting the Saint-Ouen flea market, I haven't been in ages and I didn't know about the button shop. I'll have to go check it out!
Thank you Sarah for the lovely video! Is there cashmere fabric for coats! I am in Brazil but my aunt is going to Paris next month, so if you let me know whether or not I would ask her to buy it for me! Thank you ❤
The available fabrics to purchase in the shops I mentioned change often that I can't say for sure, but I know some of them stock cashmere coating fabric often like Sacrés Coupons and So Tissus. I hope that helps!
Hi! You are spoiled for choices! Just gorgeous. I live in upstate NY and we have a few quilting shops that carry a few fashion fabrics, and we have JoAnns. Neither are the best for either price or quality. I looked at a couple of your recommended online sites for the shops you listed. It didn't look as if they ship to the US. Do you happen to know if any of them do? Thanks for all the work you put into making this video.
Thank you for your kind words and I’m sorry to hear there aren’t many affordable fabric shops around you. Although, I have visited upstate NY before and it’s a beautiful region! I’ve just checked and it’s not always indicated up front or in English, but the following shops featured in the video ship internationally (in order of appearance and including my favorites!): Tissus de rêve, So Tissus, Coupons de Saint Pierre, and Sacrés Coupons. I hope that helps!
Hello Sarah. I just find your video today and subscribe to your channel 😊 This video was very interesting to me. I am live in US now and dreaming to move to France. I have a question for you - it was difficult to learn new language and change life style?!! I love to sew too, just don’t have enough time for it. I am originally from Ukraine and live in Us for 19 years. In Ukraine I was studying sewing in special sewing school for 3 years 😊 It was interesting and remembered years of my life.
Hello and welcome! And wow, that must have been a big change and journey coming to live in the US from Ukraine! For your question, yes it was pretty hard to learn French and integrate here, but part of that was because I was very young at the time, figuring out what I wanted to do (and what would be viable) professionally, dealing with financial difficulties, and trying to make friends! I'm sure that now that I'm older and wiser (and now smartphones and translation apps exist!) I could move and make a life elsewhere easier! Although I will say that it took me about 2-3 years of living in France to feel confident speaking French on a daily basis 😊
@ thank you very much for your answer. It’s was very interesting to hear your journey . I am just wishing to move to France, buy it’s not easy, because I have a family, and all of us don’t speak French. I guess I will learn as much as I can for myself, because I want to visit your country some day and want to understand some basic language. I like to watch you videos, it’s very interesting, thank you!!!
Thank you for this video. I like your boatneck top, and have already purchased the pattern. What type of fabric is your top, and where did you buy the fabric? I plan to order other patterns, the Donovan skirt and cami.
Hello and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I made the boatneck top out of a slinky viscose jersey from the French fabric shop Mister Tissu a few years ago. I hope that helps and happy sewing!
@@Sarah_Naomi. Thank you!! I’m looking forward to reviewing the websites of the stores mentioned. Hopefully, they’ll have shipping to the USA available…and an English language option because I don’t know French!
I live in the tropics where the temperature is mostly warm. I only like natural fabrics with no blends. Basically cotton and linens and sometimes silks for evening. I love pique because it does not crease much and always looks elegant and cool. I have travelled a lot but now at my age it is not that easy. I want access to online fabric shopping. I am not familiar with that method of shopping but i can learn. Please send me information on this.
That was so interesting. I live a couple of hours away from Paris so rarely get to buy fabric in person. However I do use Coupons de St Pierre and Tissus de Reve. I have got some really lovely stuff from Coupons de St Pierre but I think you have to be very careful as they sell a lot of polyester or polyester blends and they don't always list what is in a blend. Nevertheless I still keep up to date with what is new there and jump on it if something lovely comes up. For instance I once got a gorgeous linen jersey fabric at a very low price, so it is just a case of keeping an eye on their site.
Hello, No, I don't quilt (yet!), so I'm not familiar with the quilting fabric shops here. However, I did see a selection of fat quarter bundles at the Marché Saint Pierre shop and they have a wide variety of what I think are quilting cottons, so you'd probably find some nice quilting fabrics there!
Hi Sarah, I enjoyed this video so much! How do you choose patterns? Do you ever buy pattern magazines like Burda or Couture Actuelle or stick with individual patterns?
I’m glad you liked it, thank you! No, I don’t really keep up with sewing magazines and pattern collections, I almost always buy and sew individual indie patterns because I find the sizing and instructions to be easier to work with. How about you?
@@Sarah_Naomi I buy magazines and Patrones as well as its French version Couture Actuelle are my favorite. They are a perfect fit. I don’t speak Spanish and have a bare minimum knowledge of French but I find their patterns easy and very doable. I wonder if you tried any French pattern brands? Do you know which ones are most popular?
Funnily enough, the first thing I noticed when clicking on the video was, how typically 'French' you look. I would have never guessed, you're from the USA, originally. The striped, boat neck top, minimalist jewelry and natural makeup/hairdo are all so classically French. Or what the internet likes to present to us as 'typically French', haha. But anyways, I envy you the shopping opportunities! We're down to one proper fabric store, here in Cologne, Germany. Plus another one that mostly specializes in home decor fabrics and a small corner in a department store. With the most boring selection of fabric you could imagine - it's like they don't even try. I'm the kind of person who gets inspired to sew by seeing (and buying) beautiful fabrics, I don't really enjoy ordering online.
@@praxisfurnaturheilkunde5394 I used to live in Berlin and Karstadt Hermannplatz had a really nice fabric department as well! But the one here in Cologne is just sad. They have some nice quilting fabrics, but they're like 18€/m for 1,10 width fabric, so I don't even look at them. And the rest of the selection just completely lacks any 'showstoppers'. I feel like they would do better specializing in some kind of defined clientele. Like predominantly offering special occasion fabrics. Lingerie making. Whatever. Something to draw people there. Doesn't help, that they're all the way up on the fourth floor and the staff is completely disinterested.
I get that often, it's funny you saw that too! It's one of the (smaller) first things that had me thinking I should stay here when I first came over for my studies - the more natural (compared to the US) makeup and hairstyles just correspond to my personal preferences better (not that there's anything wrong with wearing makeup or hair differently)! I'm sorry to hear that you're down to one good fabric store for sewing clothes, eek! I hope it survives and multiplies!
Oh my, the response to that question could be the topic of an entire video! In short, I studied French in university and came to finish the degree, then felt a sense of belonging too strong to ignore, fought to stay, and succeeded!
I don't quilt (yet!), so I'm not familiar with the best places to go, but I know that I often see what looks like quilting cottons (often sold in fat quarters) in fabric shops that are also haberdasheries like Marché de Saint Pierre or Tissus Reine. I hope that helps!
Really needed this for my upcoming trip to Paris. Thank you Sarah ❤. It will be my first time in Paris. Where would you recommend I stay where I can easily commute to these locations? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You’re welcome! Oh, that’s a hard question, there are so many great neighborhoods in Paris, it’s hard to get it wrong! I would avoid any very touristy or busy areas (like big train stations or super-central Paris) and for a great neighborhood with easy access to the shops I mentioned, I would recommend staying in the 11th arrondissement (near Bastille, République and Oberkampf) in the east. I hope that helps!
Hello! You can check out my sewing plans videos for lots of pattern recommendations. Otherwise, are there particular kinds of patterns you're looking for?
Ose patterns are just gorgeous, like many French pattern companies, but they are all cut for slim ladies with not much bust or hips, I would love to find a French company that worked for more hourglass shapes..if anyone knows of any...
Here in Switzerland, fabrics cost a lot more and there are hardly any fabric shops. Wool, sewing thread, buttons and accessories are also enormously more expensive and 40 euros for 3 meters of your favorite fabric would be completely impossible here, it is not offered that cheaply. I think it would have cost three to five times as much. You can dream of such prices. Unfortunately, everything is extremely expensive in Switzerland, and this applies to all areas of life. Buying online is also only possible to a limited extent because Switzerland is not part of the EU and the delivery conditions are not the same.
This amazing choice of fabric shops in Paris indicates a high level of home sewing skills in France .

But good tip, I didn’t know they sold remnants there too 😊
Thank you Sarah - great video. Looking forward to checking out some of these shops for fabric ‘souvenirs’ when I next visit Paris.
Beautiful vid!! Enjoyed it even tho I don’t sew, I’ve passed it on to 4 girlfriends who do!!❤❤❤
I'm so glad you liked it and thank you! 😊
I love love love fabrics! Come from a family who historically sew their own clothes. I sadly don’t sew much. But I do have a dressmaker who I do take fabric that I find and like and he makes me stuff to wear. I like to look different and stylish. And not always impressed with mainstream fashion. I am from South Africa 🇿🇦
thank you so much
Great video!!!!
Love this video! A wide variety of stores 😊
Yay! Thank you!
U are so talented and lucky
Super video, I’m hoping to come to Paris early next year and will definitely buy some fabric as a souvenir x
Thank you and I hope you’ll be able to come visit soon!
I agree! Sometimes they have some really beautiful fabric, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for those rare finds!
Loved this video❤
Glad you liked it!
Hi Sarah, can you recommend any shops in Paris that specialise in (or sell a wide range of) quilting fabrics?
Hello, No, I don't quilt (yet!), so I'm not familiar with the quilting fabric shops here. However, I did see a selection of fat quarter bundles at the Marché Saint Pierre shop and they have a wide variety of what I think are quilting cottons, so you'd probably find some nice quilting fabrics there!
Would like to know where to order pure cotton pique, in diff colors and designs
The fabric corner in our Karstadt in Freiburg is quite large and I help to maintain it's existence by shopping there 😂
@@praxisfurnaturheilkunde5394
I used to live in Berlin and Karstadt Hermannplatz had a really nice fabric department as well!
I’d go crazy in those fabric stores! What made you decide to move to France?
Oh my, the response to that question could be the topic of an entire video! In short, I studied French in university and came to finish the degree, then felt a sense of belonging too strong to ignore, fought to stay, and succeeded!
@@Sarah_Naomi That is so cool!
We are quilters here in the USA. Any recommendations for fabric shops in Paris that would be ideal for quilters? Thank you.
@@Sarah_Naomi thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Anywhere montmatre. Was there last month and spoilt for choice.
Hi from Luxembourg, could you recommend some good patterns? Thank you! :)))
Hello! You can check out my sewing plans videos for lots of pattern recommendations. Otherwise, are there particular kinds of patterns you're looking for?
@@Sarah_Naomi Thanks, I'll do that. Have only just discovered your videos. :))
Ose patterns are just gorgeous, like many French pattern companies, but they are all cut for slim ladies with not much bust or hips, I would love to find a French company that worked for more hourglass shapes..if anyone knows of any...
Sarah, je vous propose le “budget-friendly” :
Cozen-stop Tissus
62 Bd de Belleville, 75020
Je ne connaissais pas encore celui-là, merci !
What will be happening to Toto?
Most of the Toto shops around France are closing definitively due to judicial liquidation.
So sad that Toto is closing...
❤
xXX👍👍👍
Here in Switzerland, fabrics cost a lot more and there are hardly any fabric shops. Wool, sewing thread, buttons and accessories are also enormously more expensive and 40 euros for 3 meters of your favorite fabric would be completely impossible here, it is not offered that cheaply. I think it would have cost three to five times as much. You can dream of such prices. Unfortunately, everything is extremely expensive in Switzerland, and this applies to all areas of life. Buying online is also only possible to a limited extent because Switzerland is not part of the EU and the delivery conditions are not the same.
I'm so sorry to hear it! That must be very frustrating.
But the Swiss earn accordingly...
