- We are mixing for "beckwith" at the Colonial Inn in Hillsborough, NC. using our Allen & Heath QU-16 console. The Colonial Inn has a performance area where bands play for guests and for anyone whom may want to stop by for live outdoor music.
The video covers a basic sound system setup (load-in, setup, console setup, load-out).

Here is proof that you need to keep your eyes mostly on the stage, rather than the mixing board. In that instance, if you hadn't have been doing things the way you do them, you'd have missed the request. SPL levels are something I have to keep a close eye on in events such as these. It the areas I work, you are allowed to be 15dB above ambient level at the threshold of the closest residence; it's amazing what can be achieved with creative stage and speaker positioning.
Great comment! It is a balance between the PA, monitors, acoustic sounds, and the band's amplifiers.

I bought 8 of those wire mats on amazon..I love them. I use to just use rugs or rubber mats.
Those mats/covers work great. We still use rubber mats for some shows.

Set up is done in outdoor and then rain with wind.
Love your work. I'm a sound company from south africa. As a suggestion, why don't you connect a router to the qu and then you can do monitors via the app on an iPad. But I love your work and always wait for new videos. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for your comment. I think iPads are great, but for us, they are more suited for bands to use with their own sound systems. I have used iPads to mix for bands on their gear; it works perfect for them. For us, physical consoles are a much better solution for the services we provide.
@@stageleftaudio I run a A&H Qu-pac it stays at the stage, no snakes, no amps. Just the drive racks, wireless receivers, IEM transmitters and Power conditioner oh also the wifi router that plugs into the board and the driveracks. Everything stays plugged into the mixer and then plugs into custom patch panels via Siamese cables. Everything is controled via an iPad or two. Monitors and FoH are QSC K series.
I then sit anywhere with signal and mix.
We’re you able to get a punch out of the kick drum, sounded great in the video. I am using 18” subs but would love to size down in equipment if possible
Much of the punch you heard from the kick drum, was actually from the kick drum. Due to noise regulations for that area, we could not drive the system too loud. The drum kit was actually very loud without the use of a PA.
The "punch" out of kick drums (when going through a PA) is all about moving air. Most 18" subs do a great job moving air. Moving to something smaller (like a 12" sub) will probably not produce the same type of "punch" result that you would get from an 18" speaker.
RCF has other powered 12" subs... you may want to check them out. The speaker setup in the video (RCF EVOX8) did a pretty good, but the sub in that setup was not being used to its full potential (due to noise regulations).
Outdoor Gig eh?? Always a challenge...I don't know what kind of output that RCF rig puts out.but if it is like the Bose tower pa they don't push any air and the sound so thin and high pitched. There good for a small bar or parlor. Alto monitors are "tinkertoys" no wonder the lead singer couldn't hear anything. How do.you.like the Allen and Heath digital board. There quite nice and quite intuitive to get used to.
Rain sucks on outdoor gigs. After the gear is back home I let it air dry with the cases open.and then clean the mud off the cables. But..you got trough it...good job.
That RCF speaker (EVOX J8) did well for this event. No "tinny" sound (I've heard that sound before in other small-format systems). It was probably the right size for the coverage and needed volume level. The QU-16 is a great compact board; sounds good and is somewhat easy to use. Its controls and functions are layed out pretty good. I still favor our Presonus StudioLive Series 3 consoles. I think they sound great and have the best work-flow of the digital consoles I have used.
Yes, rain adds a level of stress to these shows... last week, I worked with the Groovynators on another outdoor show... it rained at the end of the show. I'm working on the video for that now.

that small speaker mounted on a/the sub, was that the only foh speaker? were there two of those? i only saw 1
Yes, that was the only FOH speaker. It did very well for this gig.
What is your impression of the RCF EVOX J8 in general? Also, where did you have the gain set on the J8? ... I have 2 J8's, and I think I love them, particularly outdoors.
This is the second time I have mixed on that J8. It's great. It's a perfect solution for smaller shows. I think the sound quality is really good. For this show, I think we had the gain set about 3/4 of max. Though, I think the gain control is designed to be turned all the way up to ensure a full input level (unlike a lot of their other powered speakers); this may have to do with the passive top and powered bottom working together.
Any info on those sound panels behind the drum kit?
Unfortunately, no. Those panels looked very similar to something found in a gym to do "floor exercises" on.
Question, what made you guys go with the Allen and Heath board over something like the X32 Compact?
Good question. The X32 Compact is good for a small format console. Though, (in my opinion) having mixed on a few Compact boards over the years (for other bands), I found them to be "clunky" and lacking a good work-flow. The sound quality of them seemed good, but in my opinion, the usage of them seemed to take more work than other small format consoles (i.e. Presonus StudioLive, A&H QU series). Having mixed on a QU-24 a couple of times, the QU series was a better direction for us.

Have you ever considered getting a digital board that can use a digital snake instead of that heavy analog snake I always see you using? I'm always looking for lighter weight ways of doing things and it seems it would not only be easy to transport but it would save all the plugging and patching for every gig.
Yes, we have considered it. The QU-16 (in this video) supports a full digital solution. As well, we use two Presonus StudioLive 32 consoles for larger productions (which support a full digital solution). There's a lot more involved with a digital solution than a single digital snake (CAT-6 cable), despite all the marketing hype. Moving to a full digital solution (as a sound provider) can be very expensive (switches, stage-boxes, power, extra CAT cables, racks, PDU/UPS). We use two different digital consoles (A&H and Presonus), each that has their own digital protocol. This means we would need two separate digital solutions... very, very expensive! The snake we use in this video does not weigh much. The time it takes to patch a snake into a console is less than 1% of the time it takes to load-in and setup for a show. Digital is a great tool, and we enjoy using digital consoles. At some point we may move to a full digital solution. Thanks for your comment.
