  • We are mixing "theGroovynators" for a church event in Cary, NC. FOH console is the Allen&Heath QU-16 (A&H QU-16) with Yamaha DSR-115 FOH speakers.
    This video is an extended view into the overall sound system setup; load-in, setup, line-check, and load-out for an event. The weather started out good, but got hot toward the end of the event.

    You do some amazing work man! Its really incredible how you load, unload, pack, and mix almost the entire show by yourself it with little help. Im a part time engineer and theatre tech and gigs like this are TIRING! Brilliant work man, very under appreciated.

    I've gone digital for the snake. Haven't gone back to analog. 1 Ethercon cable connects 48 Channels in and 48 Channels out. I can link ethercon cables, so by carrying 3 cables, a pair of 100 Foot and a 50 foot, and 2 couplers,I can do any 50 foot increment between 50 feet and 250 feet. All the snake cable and couplers fit in a laptop bag. For limited power locations, leave the class AB amplifiers home and go high efficiency class D for more sound on less power. An AC watt-meter is essential to watching your consumption in limited power locations. Tripped breakers is no fun.

    Why not use Velcro direct on the back of the speakers to connect the shade protectors over the amp modules?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +2

      Good observation. I am working on a video covering this exact topic. Not too long ago, I had some velcro remove the finish and paint from a console doghouse; since that time, I have had to change the strength of velcro I use (on cabinets). In the "Video 37" video, I tried those sticky strips because of the velcro issue with the doghouse. Recently, I came up with a velcro solution for the sun-shades. That video should be done by next week (~July 20, 2022)

    What do you recommend to eliminate ground loop humming out of your audio

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Год назад +1

      Make sure all the electrical power for the sound system is originating from the same source. Also, the use of ground-lift XLR cables can help. These usually fit on XLR cable connections that run between FOH and the stage.

    if a usb stick that is solid state gave you problems, imagine a regular hard drive...

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      This was my initial thought as well. Actually, a regular USB hard drive (like the one in the video) worked flawlessly. A hard drive contains a buffer, which allows for multiple simultaneously streams to be recorded at the same time. The USB stick does not have a buffer (or perhaps a buffer not large enough) to handle the many streams of data continuously. There were 0 recording errors with the hard-drive, compared to at least 32 errors with the USB stick. I like the idea of a USB stick (size, convenience), but it does not work. Thanks for the comment.

    What is monitor used in stage .also what advise for reduce the feed back if your used mixer dynacord ...thanks

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +2

      Hello. The monitor is a JBL. It has an 8 inch woofer. I do not know the model of the monitor. It belongs to the keyboard player. Reducing feedback starts with setting proper gain... too much gain equates to feedback. Also, using subtractive EQ on the mixer channel input will help with reducing feedback.

    How are you liking the reverbs on the Allen & Heath board? I find myself tweaking them an awfull lot everytime I get to an AH board. I'm used to lexicon verbs.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      The reverb (I don't recall which one I'm using) works ok, but has taken some time to get it "tuned" for what I'm looking for. I may need to look further into the other verbs available on that console. It does ok. We use two Lexicon effects units when using our analog system... those units are great!

    • @karstenpe
      @karstenpe 2 года назад +1

      @@stageleftaudio As I said I need to tweak the reverb quite a bit on those AH desks as well. I'm using the Lexicon MPX200 usually. When I'm not using my yamaha desks.
      What I have experienced is that you need to go into the expert section and tweak. I usually turn the "ref lvl" (reflections level) down on the last (I think) page. And you alså need to mess with the "colour" parameter.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад

      Yes, more tweaking with the reverb sounds about right. I'll take a look at the "ref lvl" and the colour level. Thanks!

      @dustinthiessen 2 года назад +1

      @@stageleftaudio I'm not sure if you can do it on QU, but on my dLive, I'll use a regular buss, instead of the FX buss, which gives me more processing on the input of the reverb unit, so I can EQ and compress as needed before it actually hits the engine, which can go a long way, in addition to the expert settings, to getting some really great reverb/delay sounds

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      Good info. The QU has an odd routing option for their #3, and #4 effects. Their #1, and #2 effects are routed like a regular console, but #3 and #4 are different. I'll take a look to see if the #3 and #4 effects can be routed to one of the buss'.

    thanks for uploading the video, I've been a subscriber for a few years and really enjoy your videos. I also offer audio re-enforcement in my community and I really like the stage that you have here. Can you share any information on where they were purchase? What they are made off etc... thx in advance.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for the great comments! I'm happy you are enjoying the videos. The stage belongs to the church where this video was recorded. The legs and support of the stage are steal; the surface of the stage is wood (plywood) that has a finish on it. The legs of the stage are fixed, meaning they cannot be adjusted. This is the reason the location of the stage had changed from where I originally was told it was going to be setup (last year). Staging can be purchased from a lot of different places. Stages with adjustable legs usually cost more than fixed leg stages. Hope this helps.

      @@stageleftaudio Hey. Yea I ran a volt/watt/amp meter on my powered Behringer 15" tops and my powered Behringer 18" subs (Both Class D amplifiers) and even after turning them up, I was surprised by how little amps they drew. I had an event at a local airport with NO power and had to use my 1800 watt inverter Generator (15 amps like you did). I ran two tops, four subs, one 12" powered monitor, a small Behringer 1202 mixer, a DBX 360 speaker management system and a laptop. No problem the whole day. Great event and a great sound. How did you get the Bass to come out of the house without a sub? Usually the bass would be too heavy for tops without a sub.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад

      For this event, most of the lower end on the bass was handled by the bassist's onstage bass amp. I asked him to turn up his bass amp a little more to cover most of the low-end. I had some bass in the FOH, but not much. The event did not require nor need a lot of bass (like other shows sometimes do). Not much power was used for FOH on this show.
      Those DSR 115 speakers are decent and they could have easily handled more bass.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. Yes, I think that is a 510 model. That speaker actually belongs to the keyboardist; he uses it for his monitor. He's made the same comments about those speakers as you have.

      @@stageleftaudio we have over 20 JBL 15"s & 18" + these little guys. They look like toys but really are good for the small areas or extra remotes and sound bigger that they are. Another note, we use actual umbrellas on the tops for sun and light rain protection, gear tie them to the side handle.

    Not sure if this could cause interference, but maybe a couple of small magnets to hold the sunshade to the outer edge of the powered speaker control section.
    "Realized I made a stupid statement" edit
    There's a much larger magnet on the opposite side of the control console. Duh. Interference shouldn't be an issue.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      That idea could work. Since making this video, I found a velcro solution that will probably work, and I'm finishing a video covering it. I've had issues with velcro removing the surface finish/paint on things when pulling the velcro off. I think your magnet idea would probably work on certain setups.

    • @abassplayer4life

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      No issues with the stage, was well supported. The hand cart is not flat on the front; it's easy to move speakers around with the grills facing the cart; there's minimal contact between the grill and the cart. We do have a flat facing cart but will put blankets between the cart and anything we carry on it. Also, about once a year, I go through and refresh the paint/textures on all equipment.

    • @stageleftaudio

      I use both. It depends on the event and if the band wants to be recorded. For the larger shows, we use the Presonus Studiolive Series 3 consoles (and will record the event). The A&H and the Presonus 16.4.2 consoles are still used for the smaller channel-count events. If the band wants to be recorded, and it's a low channel-count event, I"ll use the A&H.

    Why don’t you Use the two track out of the desk to go into your camera for your audio feed I do it’s very successful especially the fact that you use in crowd mic as well so you get all the ambience

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  2 года назад +1

      We do that sometimes, but it requires we leave the camera in a stationary area. Also, the mix from the board never equates to how it sounds for where the mix is. For example, in this video, we didn't have much bass in the console because the bass player was providing most of the bass from his stage cabinet; the bass would have been missed in the mix. The crowd mic would not have done well picking up the band; it would have done well picking up the guests.
