In Ode To Viceroy he talks about how much he enjoys cigarettes. He didn't mean for it to encourage so many of his fans to start, but it probably did. Now that he's seeing a kind of following and some of it revolving around his smoking, he is first hand making sure to tell people that it's no good. I think the song "Watching Him Fade Away" is kind of an Ode to that. He was a wild kid and now that he's in the spotlight he's taking responsibility and his music really reflects that too. I like the mature Mac Demarco. Makeout Tapes and his early work are awesome, but I love who he's become.
I imagine he's dealing with some stuff with his family and it may have to do with smoking as well. It kinda sucks for him because part of his image is smoking.
I'm seeing this awesome guy for the first time tonight in Missoula, MT. I had a buddy in high school who introduced me to Mac when I was about 16, and I've been a fan of him since. I'd wager that same guy is going to see Mac DeMarco tonight and likely get a VIP (if anybody is obsessed with DeMarco, it's him). I really do love this artist's music and his attitude and realistic look on things. He's a really good guy. I hope I can meet him someday.
