The funny thing is he was trying to move *away* from roles like this, which was more of a callback to his early 90s work. The last role he had with this kind of energy was 12 Monkeys in '95. All his recent movies were straight dramatic roles (ie. Meet Joe Black). Critically and commercially the movie was a flop at the time... and according to many critics it damaged his efforts to be seen as a real actor. In reality, it cemented his status as sorta the modern version of alpha cool that guys like McQueen had. It's kinda like Tony Montana in a way for Pacino.
