I am a Scandinavian in Kenya. Now for a decade. Staying mostly in coast Here less people speak English. But it is slowly changing. Because they have realised that by speaking English, they can access a much wider “audience”.
Tanzanians are perhaps starting to realise that, too.
My partner is Kenya so I have some help, here as well as in Tanzania, while I struggle to learn Swahili.
What we see in Kenya is so amazing and will impact the African continent more than anywhere else. Because Africa has a huge young population and their own special problems with massive corruption and elderly men who are glued to their presidential seats. And human rights violations. - Different from the West.
In Rurope, we don’t hear much about the “revolution” in Kenya. Because we simply don’t have relatable problems. We can demonstrate when we like, without getting killed or abducted. And we have minimal corruption.
Snd the youth were tech savvy for decades.
But the impact in Africa and perhaps even the Middle East will be memorable, I hope.
You are so wrong. I have been in the USA for almost 40 years and most demonstrations end up with deaths. Did you see the Watts riots in California, Rodney King in South Central Los Angels, George Floyd to mention but a few. As for the language, kiswahili is our Afrikan lingua franca for black or Afrikan people in Afrika and the diaspora. For your information English is not the only language in use in this world. Majority of the people in the world speak Chinese and Spanish plus other languages. English is probably spoken by 700 million not that far away from Kiswahili that is spoken by 450 million. Korean is not even spoken by 200 million people and what about Japanese? Those Asian countries are in a minority league when it comes to language but they use it for production. I want you to know that Afrikan languages were suppressed by your mzungu people during slavery and colonialism but I can tell you one thing, stop interference in Afrikan languages and we shall determine our future without your punitive loans from IMF and the world bank. Sadly some Tz countrymen do not see or don't realise why Kenyans are on the streets...they find it as some sort of entitlement or tantrum AND are only seeing the property loss. Why can they not see rhe bigger picture...NO ONE wants to lose a loved one/just 1 innocent life lost is too much..No ONE wants ro see their country deteriorating.
