Is there a business conflict between Kikuyus and Somalis in the Eastleigh region of Nairobi? Eastleigh was previously occupied by various Kenyan communities with most being from the Kikuyu community, but this has since changed with the area becoming a Somali dominated business district. The loss of affordable housing has pushed many long-term inhabitants out of Eastleigh into neighbouring slums, and raised rents for those who can afford to remain. We spoke to different business operators and they seem to have a different say.

I know the content creator has a good intention, but as a Kenyan Kikuyu, I sincerely do not like the title and words such as "take over," which only instigates ethnjc hatred rather than healthy competition. Also, the phrase "Kenyans or Somalis" assumes that all Somali are not Kenyans. Somali, who are Kenya citizens, are just Kenyans. Somali, who are Somalia citizens, are also Somali. We should look at the bigger picture beyond tribe, even beyond Kenya, etc. Kenyans are in the best position to exploit business opportunities under the Africa free trade..

I'm a Kikuyu. I don't think there's any conflict between us and the Somali community. If anything, what I see is a level of collaboration that we didn't have before. Waliahs have actually been very helpful in creating a more robust and expanded market. Our real problem in the NYŪMBA is some of our very own. Unlike the Waliahs who hold the hands of their own, our Kikuyu billionaires are extremely very selfish and self-centred. They exploit & enslave their own.
You will one day open your mind and understand the source of their money then you will realize, we are not on the same level field. Kenyans are very naive.

I should not be called a Ugandan citizen when I was born and raised in Kenya ... Even though I have family on both sides of the border. These borders are European inventions. United we Stand and with hard work we archive something for all of us. Somalis' in Eastleigh have made us buy affordable new clothes, shoes, household items, interior decor from the little salaries we have. They are united and caring. I went for check up in an hospital and i was told i have to be admitted that day. I refused kabisa crying, then the somali sisters came and comforted me. I met some of them in the ward and we comforted each other until i got well and was discharged. Somalis want good for everyone. They are hardworking and united.

Most are from Somalia because they came like a storm in mid '90's after the fall of Siad Barre . Those who were there before made very little impact. They started calling Eastleigh little 'mogadishu' instead of little 'Garissa '.

Kikuyu are not visitors in Eastleigh. Every river north of Eastleigh bears a Kikuyu name. Mathare, Gitathuru, karura , Ruaraka (Rui ruaka, 'river of women '). These places were inhabited by Kikuyu before the colonialists eg Muthangari, Kangemi, Kasarani (Gatharaini) Runda, kitsuru (Gitathuru), Dagoretti (Ndagurite), marurui, Muthaiga, Kangemi/ Loresho, Westlands, Kawangware etc.

@@abdikatar8410 Masai were nomads and used to camp where we have the railway when there was a lot of grass but would leave when it's over. Kikuyu as farmers once they take land settle permanently. After Nairobi river no other river has a Masai but Kikuyu names. The colonialists had taken our land then we got most of it back at independence.

I believe the Kikuyus are the biggest winners here. A plot that was valued at 20 million shillings was sold at 160 million shillings. I was told recently that a kikuyu lady pocketed a whooping 350 million shillings from her plot in Eastleigh. Kikuyus are again the biggest purchasing group in Eastleigh.

You’re diving into the unknown historical context to address current issues. No correlation. The only difference between Agikuyu and Somalis is the philosophical approach to business. Kikuyus are pure capitalists while Somalis adopt a social approach and this is why: Kikuyus have lots of collateral that can give them huge individual loans but Somalis must pool their resources together. That’s how Somalis have bought off almost all Kikuyus from Eastleigh but the Kikuyus only relocate to other areas since they don’t have any particular place they prefer but only go where they can make money as individuals. I’m Somali and US citizen and at same time I work here and I live here in the USA doesn’t mean we’re taking over here. When I have a chance I like to go vacation to Kenya and spend my time and my money there, even though I go to Somalia as well so if I don’t have any families or relatives in kenya I wouldn’t spent a dollar there. On the other hand we love Kenyans they’re the nicest people in Africa and I would love to see them to invest my country as well.
