- On a recent visit to London one of the biggest forces in New York radio, Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg, linked up up with our very own Stormzy for an adventure around East London's Shoreditch area.
The pair discuss cultural differences between Hip Hop and Grime, language barriers and why you don't need radio play to become a superstar in 2015 - all while taking in the scenic drive, a bagel and some shots (of course).
Join in the conversation #BagelAndShots.

I just love that level of admiration you see on Rosenberg's face build when Stormzy starts going in
I don't think anyone in the UK has ever blown up as fast as stormzy
sneakbo ?
***** I wouldn't know I don't look out for snitches
LOOOOOOL
J Hus blew in 2 months
South Manny He's not on stormzy's level tho, stormz worked with Jools Holland on BBC, he worked with jadakiss and performed with Kanye , I mean fucking hell he's even chilling with peter Rosenberg from HOT 97. I don't even think J hus will last long , he's not that talented tbh
when stormzy starts spitting you can see rosenberg suddenly realises that he's actually good
As an American I like grime artists better when they're not trying to conform. They have their own style. That's what people want to hear. Imagine if Kendrick or J Cole start rapping with a British accent to sell more records in the UK.
+Cris LeRoi couldn't agree more.
Very good point, drake already did that
Ashraf Frayne yes, like once. no rapper wants british accent lol
+EB 4LIFE You ever heard of Slick Rick? He let his UK sound out every now and then
Lev Myshkin wasn't he born there?
skepta can pop off in states cause he speaks clearly and doesnt use to much slang
+saif jarral Shutdown
Stormzy and Skepta are popping in NYC because its the melting pot of America and we have the most west Indian culture here which uses the same slang/dialect as it is in the UK...so we understand yall more but to the average american to really pop off in the USA is a hook and the song has to be really catch.. SHUTDOWN was close but its wasnt enough skep is close though
j
saif jarral Fuck you talking about ? was you there at central park stage last year this summer was you at PS1 moma ? Fools Gold's day off ? Or was you even at the Fader Fort for CMJ week this week ? I bet you never heard of these events get out more and get off the computer...
fight me bro
Im American nd i gotta say shout out to Shadrack nd Abenigo for teaching me about Bagel King lmao
"Dont go bagel king fam"
"MAN GET SKATED ON INNIT, MAN GET ROLLED ON WITH THE SKATES"
Looooool you're crazy for this my nigga! I'm English and you just reminded me
UK nd US are distant cousins uknow lol. Black Lip Pastor we make sure we are aware of whats poppin across the pond.
I'm sorry
Nah America and Canada are... We don't care about England
Canada is more like england than us mate.
Stormz spitting for Rosenberg was epic. But he needs to meet Kano / JME / Wiley to get a better understanding of the scene
That's true. Stormzy didn't really have good answers
***** exactly. he'd getter a better appreciation for our scene then from people that created it. Stromz ent articulate enough here...
***** yh I'm glad, im happy for him he's absolutely killing it and fully representing the scene.
Evo Thompson ehhh it's not really his fault.. he's still fairly new to the game. Right now pretty much everyone is looking to Skepta to bridge the gap between the UK and the US. I'm surprised that other OGs in the scene haven't been picked up on as much
But why are the British so obsessed with getting to link up with Americans? It's like they are dedicated to be noticed by people who ain't interested, they don't give a shit about Britiain or bloody grime! If it never happened years ago it won't happen now
Who’s here after watching the hot 97 interview with Stormzy lol 💯
At 4:17 Peter Rosenberg said for the uk to blow in America it wud have to go 1 of 2 ways 1 being that it's so funny and catchy that Americans will like it - Big Shaq is that guy. My man called it
Doja - central cee
big up stormzy, so grounded. respect for the way he's biggin up other artists too. my g
Morleys....Its the dirt, but the good dirt! LOL! Sick vid
shout out rosenberg dont see many yanks doing this
Stormzy is one cool guy,humble
Holy fk Rosengberg predicted fkin big shaq about how it has to be unique or funny
The beat for ''It aint safe'' by skepta sounds like a old 50 cent song
This is great to see. This guy can definitely sell in the US.
This is a Good look for Stormzy, doing the UK proud
That last freestyle was MAAAD
Always kinda rated Stormzy but after that freestyle I FULLY rate him, big up
Much Respect to Stormzy! BUT, 'It Ain't Safe' is NOT a grime song. It's Hip Hop, straight up southern Three 6 Mafia type of track with a British artist from the Grime culture.
Before everybody thumbs me down listen to 'Project Pat - We Aint Scared Hoe' (especially the verse) the drum pattern and rap flow is to bait to deny this comment.
Big up though.
Shemzy Anthony I think he only brought it up bc Rosenberg mentioned about having a British rapper with an American hook.
Shemzy Anthony after i just heard project pat tune I'm saying this is the realest comment on youtube tbh
this is really good interview
quality GRM
Stormzy is SO intelligent... what a legend
I dont think it aint safe is the song that is the most representative of grime right now, and rosenberg is right in that is sounds like a hip hop song. It reminds me of something asap ferg would do. Thats not me has the old school grime sound and attitude that grime is known for. Thats the type of grime that should be getting exposure to americans.
Spitting on that pied piper instrumental was a good look, gave rosenberg an idea of what grime sets are like.
I've never even considered It ain't safe a grime record.
***** i agree, but in the end it is just a british guy rapping with an american on the hook. Listen to novelist - take time, its different yet also familiar to old grimenheads at the same time. Thats what america needs exposure to,and if they dont like it, its their loss because fuck conforming.
range567W True but I think for american's to get used to grime they need to get used to the accent first which songs like it ain't safe can do rather than jumping straight to grime where the difference in beat and accent will make them not even give it a chance
I Love Grime...til the end of time!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I dont think people understand how big this is. Literally UK grime is doing so well even America wants a sniff
rosenberg predicted shutdown
Hot 97 is primarily a Hip-Hop station. If some 13yr old kid living in Trenton or Neptune NJ, who has never been to NYC, tunes in one night and hears a Grime MC, he is not going to make a great distinction between Grime and Hip-hop. It will, as it does, sound similar. Now, just as a historical backdrop Garage (meaning Paradise Garage) had a close affinity to Hip Hop culture as it made its way downtown and found Dj's willing to play the music in clubs that had previously played Disco. That Garage morphed somewhat when it got to the UK is not worth splitting hairs over. These musics are all connected to the original African Griot (Djeli) Blues, Calypso, Mento, and then on to the DJ's who began "rapping" (Rufus Thomas, Jocko Henderson, Jack "The Rapper" Gibson etc). Whenever I hear anyone pick up a microphone and use vocal expression that is not singing, and that uses rhyme, it is connected to this long and varied history.
Good to see the lads with there seat belts on
Such a big look for stormzy 🙏
I don't know how many of you have heard stormzy's live performance of only one, but songs like that would have greater potential chance at blowing up than other grime type songs.
Stormzy is doing it big this is a good look
I really want a bagel now 😁 lol
Don't really feel this whole getalong-gang thing going on with America. How long have bruvvas in the UK been hustling without the yanks? This scene's been here since 2002, since Eskimo and other dark garage instrumentals. Why do they give a shit now? History repeating itself, anyone remembers what happened to Dubstep when it went to the US? I dunno why everyone is so fucking obsessed about getting our sound big in the charts, if it does, sick. But Grime is underground music, it ain't made for the chart and that's how it should stay. Who gives a shit if yanks don't understand Grime? We do our thing and they do there's. Hustle on.
Rónán Flynn Facts.
I second that!
I'm a yank and stormy is my favorite grime artist. Don't stereotype the yanks some of us pay attention
Ben Stone I hear that but Grime's been hear since 2002, I don't understand what the fascination with it now is? If your favourite artist is Stormzy you probably ain't heard of Ghetts?
+Rónán Flynn Yeah but from an american's perspective its still fairly new, grime is only now getting exposure to the US. with stomzy bridging the gap between grime and rap, and being marketed commercially as an artist, the grime genre is finally getting recognition globally. ghetts is an excellent lyricist, but commercially he's not marketable, That's why he's never cracked it.
Big up Stormzy for shouting Bagel King! 🙌🏾🙏🏾
Rosenberg was just throwing shade at UK rap the whole time 🤣🤣
Excellent dialogue between the two!
Big up Stormzy reppin da endz
That it aint safe song reminds me of project pat.
Cris LeRoi I know what you mean with the hook like if pat dropped it, it would sound natural lol
I roccs wit da Grime & have been for years...can't wait til they tour venues in the States cuz that exposure is needed here!
Here from da stormzy hot 97 interview 🔥🔥
When he spat for him jeeze stormzy tight g 👌✌️
Stormzy making some moves
The skepta song that stormzy shows is the exact song that pulled me into grime as an american.

Big up stormzy, doing things !
Morleys is So Bait aha!
He's 100% right about Morleys
I can explain to this turkey why grime is indeed very different from U.S. hip-hop (if that can be generalized as one thing).
I think grime has a lot of obvious influences from rap music.
10:38 the US geeza feeling it u can tell respect UK G! g

This was a good look.

Stormzy went innn
I can't find the freestyle with both of you
I would of said grime spawn'd from garage with the mc flow taking more of a hip hop vibe over time.
introduce rosenberg to these albums boy in the corner, home sweet home or treddin on thin ice. if not those then joseph junior adenuga

Grime is not the same as rap! Play Rosenberg some Skrapz, Nines, Potter Payper etc. Some real UK rap. Stormzys freestyle was hard tho.
That was big!
Yo Stormzy repped it right on Pied Piper
Stormzys ill uno guys cold still
man said I'm taking you Morleys
I fuck with skepta and chip and I'm Mexican so it's happening
Anyone know where I can find the link for a shortened version of this video of just stormzy's freestyle? Thanks
nice one stormzy
This was so awkward 😂😂
Grime is a sub genre of hip hop(period) not "American"hip hop. The biggest difference is the tempo(rhythm), flow, accent and slang. It's a different style, no need to try and separate yourself from Hip hop culture especially since grime wouldn't exist with out it.
can someone give me a link to the instrumental played at stormzy's freestyle
lol oh man. loading this up right now
That song he played sounds like 8-Ball & MJG
Man like morleys yeah
tempa t and j spades by faar have the right sound and energy to cross over tempa t has the energy j spades got that yardi/english flow with hard bars and solid beats that are simple to understand bmt tempa t could blow someone needs to make a vine send it worldstar truuus me lol but obv man might be wrong still

Oi what's this Riddim near the ned I heard it in thiago Silva by Dave and Aj Tracey prod 169 but idk what it is
So... if I rap with fast flows over a grime instrumental but I rap in my native language (bulgarian) will that be considered grime ?
They look like a zebra crossing in the back of he cab....
