what mods could you do to be quicker off the line? racing slicks that you warm up (is that possible)....and will the new 4680s make the car take off faster (more power)?
I’ve got Nitto NT01 race tires on the Tesla, and traction is not usually an issue. But the car just won’t give any more power off the line. It clearly has a “map” of the maximum torque delivered at each MPH… (Obvious because our 2019 dual motor Model S is 200 pounds heavier and yet has a nearly identical 60-foot time: 1.49 seconds)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel thanks, do you imagine tesla is giving you the fastest drag times with the current hardware...or could they open up more juice for you specifically running 1/8 and 1/4 miles?
@@tomrynkewicz7674 Then a heavy roll cage (200 pounds) would be needed to race at all our local 1/4 mile dragstrips in Florida. The only reason we don’t need one is the exception for “100% production factory stock vehicles”. Can’t remove any weight, not even change to the tires or wheels. 200 pounds is about 0.2 seconds slower…
It's almost a given these days that a tesla would beat that rotary or the majority of ICE engines, at least at the lower speeds and off the line. But just curious, what are the specs on the rx-7's rotary? Turbo or N/A? I know there are some pretty fast N/A drag rotaries, especially when paired with the light 1st gen rx7 chassis, so I didn't want to assume it's turbo'ed.

It takes more than spinning triangles to beat a plaid. How about spinning hexagons. Yup!! That's what the plaid motors are made of!! Hexagons, many of them.
The plaid is very impressive but there are many rotary cars running 6 second quater miles. Show me a plaid that can do that and I will agree with your post
For many (slower) cars, it might not make any difference at all, especially if they are on street tires. But for fast cars on drag radials that are competitive with the Plaid, and running 9s in the quarter mile, a complete loss of traction at the line (and then having to “pedal” it) will usually cost about a full second. We saw it recently with a 900+HP Redeye and even again just last night with a fast turbo Supra. Right around one full second was lost. The burnout doesn’t guarantee traction of course, but without warming those drag radials, losing traction is almost guaranteed.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel so it about not losing time not gaining time shame , I was wondering if a software mod to allow the Tesla to selectively turn off the traction control to allow the tyres to be warmed would reduce the 1/4 mile time.
@@alanrickett2537 Well, your first sentence is mostly true for most cars. But the Tesla is unique because it does not give the driver 100% of the available power in the first ~60-100 feet or so. This is clearly noted because it has the same 60-foot times as our 2019 Tesla Model S, which has only ~700HP (and 200 pounds heavier) and yet also runs 1.49 seconds to 60-feet. Tesla uses an acceleration map that gives a maximum amount of power based on what they believe is the maximum amount of traction that the car can have with the stock tires at any given MPH. (And then it only comes down from that power level if Traction Control detects slippage.) If they were to increase the off-the-line power, most drivers would have immediate Traction Control intervention every time, but it would be great for a drag racer on drag tires! ⚡️🚙💨
you have to be old to remember what a sensation they used to be from 1978-95. Mazda made a few models featuring the 12 and 13b twin rotors. Sold lots of them until Ford stepped in to ruin it with the RX8. There are LOTS of vids that can tell you all about them, but IMHO the ultimate Mazda design was the one that won Le Mans in 1989. It beat everyone. There was so little wear, they said that it could run ANOTHER 24 hour race if they just put in fresh oil. Not a good drag racer because of the low compression, and ALL drag racers are loud -except Tesla :)
👍 Strongly considered, but everyone who sees the damage immediately says “what post or wall did you hit?” It really has the appearance of a hit-and-run (property damage) incident. (With the Plaid being the offender, not the victim 😳) So that has made it much more of a stigma than a badge…
Price difference of $120K? We’ve raced Lamborghinis and Ferraris that cost far more than $120K MORE THAN the Plaid, and beaten them too. Plus a Bentley and a couple of tuned Turbo Porches that were more than $250K. We trounced those too! (but wouldn’t have made excuses if we lost)
What a beautiful engine Tesla Struggling to keep up near a naturally aspirated 80 cubic inches 1.3L Rotary engine (is smaller in dimensions than the tesla motor) only 3 moving parts made in the 80’s😱 Now that whats what I call technology 🔥💪👌🔻🔺
@@thatcornfedrx8guy372 1/4 Mile? So that the Tesla could win by more than 10 car lengths? The RX7 had no top end, was passed like it was standing still, and would be lucky to hit 130MPH in the 1/4, whereas the Plaid hits 150MPH…
Yah, I thought those slicks, long wheelie bars, and full cage looked stock 🤣. How much faster have new Mazda’s gotten in the last 40 years? Surely much, much faster, right? Meantime the Tesla is 0 cubic inches and 100% showroom stock, not modified at all ⚡️🚙💨
Not taking any credit from the Plaid but by the sound of it this is a N/A 13-B which in the best case it would have 350hp and that's about 1/3 of the Plaid h.p., that RX-7 Just needs a 150h.p. shot of Nitrous and it would kill the Plaid ánd a Turbo 13-B with that setup would be an overkill for the E.V.....let the trashtalk begin now 🤣🤣
You know these things last a lot longer than a tradition drag engine? Don’t believe me? Lookup Len bacon, I think 1320 has a video talking with him after some passes where he’s said he’d done a few dozen passes on the engine m, and he drive the car to/from the track, not trailered. Also, if you do watch some of the baconator, show me a Tesla that can dance like that….
I’m not taking sides but that rotary is far from heavily modified I’ll be surprised if that rotary have five hundred hp and second it doesn’t have any exhaust so how do you expect it to sound just a down pipe so you guys need to stop love tesla it’s a beast but don’t exaggerate

(And then it only comes down from that power level if Traction Control detects slippage.)
If they were to increase the off-the-line power, most drivers would have immediate Traction Control intervention every time, but it would be great for a drag racer on drag tires! ⚡️🚙💨
Excuse my ignorance but what is a rotary?
The Wankel engine is not easy to describe in a couple of sentences. See this excellent page: mechanicalboost.com/wankel-engine/
you have to be old to remember what a sensation they used to be from 1978-95.
I THINK WORLD RECORD QTR MILE IS STILL LOQUITO KILLER. 6.1 SECONDS FROM A TURBO 3 ROTOR
Not sure that one has a factory stock powertrain and is still covered by the manufacturers warranty? (Ours is 100% 😀)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel a Tesla is maxed out form factory, no Tesla is doing 6s in the 1/4 as a full bodied car
I want an rx7 soo bad
RX was a rocket up to 330' Then it died down
Great race! Not gonna lie I was secretly hoping the rx7 won. Lol. Gotta love old school Japanese cars.
Rx7 was very fast up to 330 ft
👍Very lightweight and quick!
Has the Tesla been fixed?
It goes in for the body work and paint next month. I’ve got another EV lined up to race with during the repair downtime ⚡️🚙💨
See current damage at 0:30
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I'd leave it as a badge of honor 🤣
👍 Strongly considered, but everyone who sees the damage immediately says “what post or wall did you hit?” It really has the appearance of a hit-and-run (property damage) incident. (With the Plaid being the offender, not the victim 😳) So that has made it much more of a stigma than a badge…
@@TeslaPlaidChannel you do have proof for any nonbelievers. But I do understand your stance completely 👍
Only took three gals of 110 and two quarts of oil to run that rotary.
I lold
It is amazing you can buy a production car that is faster than purpose built speed machines. Tesla is the first company to do it I hope not the last.
I can't tell, is that thing a rotary? 🤔🤣
Sounds like diarrhea hitting a bucket and turns out to be slower.
Lmfaoooo
This is funny how you can heavily modify a all motor that has factory internals from 1985.comparing a $5,000 dollar car with a tesla plaid.
For those of you that like a loud rotary, umm, hell no! Did you talk to the driver after you showed him what was what?
We weren’t able to catch up afterward but we have talked a few months ago when he was first tuning and not ready to race yet. Nice guy 👍
This guy has never lost a race, this is bull
You lie. Plenty of losses posted here. Like these two recently: ruclips.net/video/N_DqzSt29sY/видео.html
Tesla = Pass everything but a charging station!
👍 Good thing we won by THREE FULL CAR LENGTHS, even in this short 1/8th mile race 😃
@@TeslaPlaidChannel make it 1/4 mile and race him again
@@thatcornfedrx8guy372 1/4 Mile? So that the Tesla could win by more than 10 car lengths? The RX7 had no top end, was passed like it was standing still, and would be lucky to hit 130MPH in the 1/4, whereas the Plaid hits 150MPH…
Big Morty vibes from you, sir~
N/A Rx7
All that noise...and it lost.
Ice is dead.
Paltelo puñetaaaaaaaaa.
No todaaaaaaay
That was a lightly modified 80 cubic inch 40 year old engine, they'll run in the 4s in the 1/8 when highly modified 😂
Yah, I thought those slicks, long wheelie bars, and full cage looked stock 🤣. How much faster have new Mazda’s gotten in the last 40 years? Surely much, much faster, right?
Meantime the Tesla is 0 cubic inches and 100% showroom stock, not modified at all ⚡️🚙💨
Not taking any credit from the Plaid but by the sound of it this is a N/A 13-B which in the best case it would have 350hp and that's about 1/3 of the Plaid h.p., that RX-7 Just needs a 150h.p. shot of Nitrous and it would kill the Plaid ánd a Turbo 13-B with that setup would be an overkill for the E.V.....let the trashtalk begin now 🤣🤣
...there may also be a weight difference between these two? Not sure... (Tires also? Or is that RX-7 on full slicks?)
No doubt about the weight difference between this 2 cars but the tires I wouldn't mine that much because the Plaid is an AWD car.
Rx7 engines can beat electric
Sometimes, but not usually. We’ve raced several, but only recall being beaten once 😃
After all that spit and noise, its Back to the mechanic and an expensive rebuild for the RX…
That’s a naturally aspirated rotary.. lol. Sorry brother but next time mess with a turbo rotary
Thanks for enlightening us; everyone was wondering why it was so super slow, and so super quiet as well! 🤔
And pretty sure this rotary is entirely *stock*, right? 🤔 They all shoot fire 🔥 out of the pipe, straight from the factory? (The Tesla is stock, BTW.)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel rx8 shoots fire stock
I’m not taking sides but that rotary is far from heavily modified I’ll be surprised if that rotary have five hundred hp and second it doesn’t have any exhaust so how do you expect it to sound just a down pipe so you guys need to stop love tesla it’s a beast but don’t exaggerate
Yep, and those tires and wheelie bar are both stock from the factory 🤣
