Legendary rock critic Greil Marcus once said something to the effect that punk was unique because any good punk song had the ability to convince you, for the duration of the song, that it's the greatest song ever recorded. It's why I love punk.

I Once saw JELLO BIAFRA doing a spoken word presentation in Denver in the '90s & that "lecture" had the same over-the-edge feel that this anthem has. He is truly charismatic, to say the least! One wouldn't think a speaker could inspire that punk high quite the same as a close-up dose of the music did... but: there it was!

Just finished it. And in case you didn't know, Jello Biafra is the name of the lead singer and he writes their stuff and he created his own record label called Alternative Tentacles, which got raided by the FBI at one point. It also became a very important label for alternative music.
Also, I wondered if you guys got the Pol Pot reference at the end where they keep repeating his name over and over? Not only does the music feel visceral, this is an incredibly dark and grim and sarcastic song.
They're talking about the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia that emerged from the conflict in Vietnam. It was absolutely horrible and gruesome. I can't even go into it here but you can read about it. It is horrific beyond imagination. He was absolutely ruthless.
Think about the song in that context and suddenly you will see that it's even a lot more punk than you were thinking it was.
For something a bit more uplifting, check out their Too Drunk To F*ck.
Oh yeah, in 1989, Ice-T sampled Jello Biafra for the opening track of his third album The iceberg / Freedom of Speech... Just Watch What You Say! ... It's a great album and it's the one right before his huge breakout album, OG. He also sampled Black Sabbath on that same album.

As an old-school hardcore punk fan from the '80s, it was *so great* to see you guys love this song and rate it so highly! It's a punk classic. Back in the day, many people misunderstood this band and wrongly took them to be a "shock-rock" act, due to the name, but they were very serious, lyrically and musically. Holiday in Cambodia" displays their willingness to call out both the extreme right *and* extreme left.

Sonically gruesome, but lyrics succeed in delivering a message. This is the value of your channel-- between you and your community, I've been exposed to a whole lot of music I'd never have heard otherwise-- thanks. Hey, since I'm alone here in the comments section, maybe I've got your attention: you really WANT to listen to 801 Live's version of "Tomorrow Never Knows". You will absolutely flip over the bass. 801 Live is not a group-- it's a concert collaboration that includes Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera. No one has heard of it because it has no name recognition, but the musicians, performance and production are unbelievable.

Im so glad you guys finally got around to this band and song. I was a 19 year old punk chick in L.A. and man, fell instantly in love with the DK'S music. I was singing their virtues to everyone and let me tell you, it either blew their minds or they freaked out. I had a friend in Chicago keep telling how great the new Reo Speedwagon lp was and I'm going, "Uh, yeah, okay but listen to THIS." You had to drill it into some people, but eventually they see the light.
Seeing the band (first time was at the Whisky) was super cool and I saw them many times over the years. I was especially thrilled to find on YT an early interview with Jello at Oki-Dog (a food stand punks all hung at) to find me in the background by accident. He had been using DK records as place mats during the interview so when it ended, I hopped over and got them signed (and still have them too!)

The DK's went beyond pushing the limits, as "Holiday in Cambodia," demonstrates. It hits every nerve. When the album is titled Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, you know you're about to hear something dangerous. "Police Truck", "California Uber Alles," "Kill the Poor," "Let's Lynch the Landlord," "Chemical Warfare," "Terminal Preppie," "Winnebago Warriors," or "Buzzbomb," are all worthy follow ups. And if you must go "commercial" check out their covers of "Rawhide," and "Viva Las Vegas."
Jello Biafra has a great Spoken Word album on which he explains the FBI Raid, which was provoked by the PMRC, relating to the DK's Frankenchrist album which used a 1973 H.R. Giger's painting, XX Landscape, on the cover. The case ended in a mistrial and all charges were dropped.

Excellent choice! I had this DK album back in the day. NYC in the 70’s & 80’s was a grimy, gritty but highly energized time. The only way to find combat boots was at Army & Navy stores (they were exceedingly uncomfortable).
Some other iconic core bands worth checking out are Minor Threat and Bad Brains (Banned in DC great tune). FYI Butthole Surfers have a song where they poke fun at the DK’s (Bird).
Not sure if your generation knows this but people in the pit back then generally did not slam hard against each other; it just looked that way. Something that sucked was that women were not welcome into the pit. It was really sexist back then.
The precursor to punk was garage rock. Some of the more iconic bands include MC5, The Stooges (original stage diving) , The Cramps, The Velvet Underground and The Modern Lovers (Roadrunner been covered by many bands).
The energy put out by old school Core bands (and the audience) is unparalleled to anything I’ve ever experienced.
love your reviews guys. Keep up the great work!

This is a true musical document. Also, Anne Murray once said how much she loved the Dead Kennedys. She said "of all the things to treasure in the world, I love the taste of raw meat... the Dead Kennedys give me that, in Punk form..."

Hmm. Some of the comments here are dismissing this song as “crap”. It’s fine if one doesn’t like a song, but what does calling it “crap” contribute? I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and while I didn’t listen to punk then, I’ve come to appreciate it. It was music encapsulating the anger and nihilism of the era (post Vietnam, stagflation, “morning in America”, preppy nonsense, etc. ). I like some of the classic rock, some of the prog, some of the funk, and some of the punk. The world needs it all. And sometimes rich kids who think being rich makes them special need to hear a different opinion from Jello Biafra 😂

That analogy was one of the best things I ever heard 😂😂 I had the absolute pleasure of seeing these guys live in 2003 (albeit with Brandon Cruz rather than Jello Biafra) and the complete and utter privilege of meeting them backstage and going out for a few beers with them after the show. It was a night I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I highly recommend you listen to California über alles, Kill The Poor, Police Truck, and then the singles recording of this. I actually prefer that version.
