    Extra tip: use a hair-dryer to heat up the grill cloth. It'll tighten and yield a better looking final product.

    • @michaelwbuncher7599
      @michaelwbuncher7599 4 года назад

      before or after you staple? it it to heat it up so it expands and you can stretch it more while stapling so it then pulls tight or it is to simply tighten it up post-stapling as if it was a winterizing window film?

    • @philchevrier
      @philchevrier 4 года назад +3

      @@michaelwbuncher7599 After it's stapled. What I do is put it on and staple it as tight and straight as possible and then, once it's all stapled and firmly in place, I heat it up. Go slowly (you don't want to overheat it, it can put a hole in it if you do). With the synthetic materials, heating it tightens it so it's almost like a drumskin, looks and feels professional. I've done this a bunch of times and the results are fantastic.

      @@michaelwbuncher7599 No problem. If it looks a bit too loose and therefore "not that straight", this should fix it nicely. Remember to take it slow, nothing worse than having to redo it all because your burned a hole in it (don't ask how I know)... ;-)

    3/4 inch spruce plywood was $20. Hardware was $50. Glue/screws, around $7. Biggest expense is the speaker. The Rocket 80 costs around $70 (cheap speaker). I've since replaced it with a Celestion Vintage 30 which is $130.

      Robert Wootton Thanks man. In my end of the world (Canada) there is a cost savings to making a speaker cab yourself. Orange & Marshall & Blackstar & Celestion items are not cheap in North America. Wood, however, is rather inexpensive. In Canada the PPC112 new costs $430 due to the Celestion Vintage Modern Speaker. If you purchase the speaker separately, it costs $160. Parts for the speaker would be at the most $100, so that is $260 vs $430, as well as the enjoyment of building your own speaker cab the way you like it.

    At last! Someone using some quality speaker cable rather than the small gauge wires which are inexplicably twisted round one another. Fundamental flaw. Good job buddy.

    • @c00lkatz
      @c00lkatz 8 лет назад +9

      Wires are sized based upon the amount of current running through them (so they don't overheat) and how resistive the wire is (to minimize voltage drop, gauge vs length). The amount of current flowing through the relatively short speaker wires used in guitar cabinets (for example) is minimal and does not require super fat wires. You size the wire based on necessity, not just because it looks cool. Also, twisting wires carrying audio signals is done to reduce noise. There are other more effective methods depending on the design of whatever you're working on, but in general it is best practice and an easy thing to do.

    I saw you drilling in wood screws to mount the speaker. Then you flipped over the speaker and baffle board to staple down the grill cloth. Wood screws were gone and replaced with machine screws. Was there any type of screws or brad nailed used to glue the corner supports in place? Or just glue as shown in the video? No hate here, other than education for others, but those glued, supported corners won't hold up in gigging and touring. Finger joint or dovetail joints were used in vintage amp construction for a reason. They still hold up today after over half a century of use, and being sat on. Many shortcuts taken here that will be at the sacrifice of durability. Not bad for a casual home jammer though.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  8 лет назад +2

      I started with wood screws for the speaker but then realized with all the vibrations the speaker would not remain fixed in place so I then used screws, washers, nuts. I did add screws to the long supports. You can see the screws when I flip the front speaker over. So far the speaker cabinet has held up well. Shortly after the video I replaced the Rocket 50 with a Celestion V30, and also replaced the thick overkill speaker wire with something much thinner.

      +hammerhead729 To properly construct a bass reflex cabinet, the box, the size of the hole (port), and the location of the hole all have to be engineered and calculated accurately to ensure that the sound coming off the back of the speaker will come out of the hole in phase with the sound coming off the front of the speaker. If you just cut any old hole, the phases will not match up and the combined output will sound like crap. Unless you get lucky. Do you feel lucky?

    What thickness would you recommend keeping weight and toughness in mind?

    • @markschmitt5550
      @markschmitt5550 8 лет назад +2

      Yes... the wood thickness does affect the tone... and so does adding batting inside... try using 3/4" for the sides and then 1/2" for the speaker mount and the back for a guitar and 3/4" for a bass... the type of wood also matters... I use maple furniture grade plywood because of its strength and density. Try thinking of a speaker cab as a type of an acoustic guitar with a speaker for the sound hole. You might also try removing the back. I prefer an open back cab for guitar and you use a sealed, with a forward facing port, for the bass.

    A cheap dado blade set for your table saw will allow you to make a finger jointing jig. Better joinery would make it last and be giggable. Also, to attach speakers to panels of wood or MDF you should use T nuts instead of just a screw and bolt. #10 machine screws and T nuts are pretty standard.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  8 лет назад +1

      If you look on any on-line speaker accessory store you'll find most parts. Input jack is just the 1/4" input jack. You can get a jack plate for it (square or round). The speaker cable in this video was over kill. All you need is much thinner speaker wire (not cable). The slip on ends can be purchased at any automotive or electronics store.

      With the V30 in the speaker box the sound is pretty much identical to the PPC112 cab.

    if Id use solid wood instead of layered plywood, would that resonate more than plywood? could I pad the inner walls to prevend that?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  8 лет назад

      +Alex Romgard No worries. Plywood and solid wood, not much difference in the end. Some solid wood cabinets are made out of birch, but then again you can buy birch plywood for less and I would guess it would give you the same results. If you pad the inner walls, you'll dampen the sound which may or may not what you hope for. Most people have two options with speaker cabs... closed back or open back. if you allow air to flow in and out of the back (by removing 1/4 of the back) , then the sound is more open (notes ring out). If you keep the back closed tight, then you have a much tighter bottom end. It all depends what end result you are looking for.

      Parts Express has them for a decent price. They also have guitar speakers and grill clothe.

    God you make it look easy. I want to try this but I know I'll fuck it up. How much harder would it have been to cover it in tolex rather than staining it? Nice work bro!

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  10 лет назад

      Thanks! Tolex would take a bit of talent to get the seams and corners just right. Staining or painting is the quick way.

    New to non-combo amps. What is the benefits of a 4x12 vs this style of cabinet? Looking to get the 6505MH and will do direct recording, but would also like a cabinet. Thanks.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  8 лет назад

      +Curtis Henken A 4 x 12 cab will give you plenty of bottom end at high volumes. A 1 x 12 or 2 x 12 cab will give you outstanding tone at lower volumes. In my comparison video of the 6505 MH vs the Orange OR15, I use this 1 x 12 Cab for part of the demo and then later use a 4 x 12 cab. ruclips.net/video/ggxz9FNJdao/видео.html

    Thank you so much for the video. Super helpful. I want your opinion on something. Do you see a huge advantage in having the upper end Celestions like the vintage 30s or g12 h30s or black and blue alnicos? Is there something you'd recommend that's more affordable.

      Well the rocket 50 used in the video is low quality. If you want afforable that sound good go with warehouse guitar speakers. Theyre like $70-$80

    If you were to paint the amp instead of stain it what would happen and would it negatively affect the tone or sound of the the cab.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  8 лет назад

      +FLUFFYBUNNIEZ It would have no effect. Most speaker cabs are just covered in tolex material.

    If you only have one input how did you stack it with another orange cab??

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      Max Armfield Guitar Ahhh... you're thinking of speaker cabs that have the ability to daisy chain one speaker cab into another (one's that have two input jacks on the back). In the demo the sound was only coming from the newly built speaker cab which was plugged into the 16 ohm output of the Orange amp. However, with an Orange amp, like most good amps, you have the option to plug two 16 ohm speaker cabs into two separate 8 ohm outputs on the back of the amp (you don't need to have speaker cabs with the daisy chain option).

    Awesome video! Me and my dad are planning on making our own cabinet this weekend. How heavy was your cab? We're planning on making a 2x12 out of either oak or birch. I assume it'd be in the 50-60 lbs range?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  10 лет назад

      Wuzuw The speaker box in this video is just under 40 lbs. A 2 x 12 case would be a bit near the same weight I would think, depending on weight of speakers and hardware.

    Hello, can you give me some hints about the speaker cable? I can't find one. Did you do it by yourself or just bought somewhere? What do I have to search for?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад +1

      +Lorenzo Calabrò You can buy speaker cable at any electronics store such as Best Buy... or even Home Depot. I used a thick speaker cable in this video but I'd suggest you go with a much thinner one (the thick is over-kill). You only need a short piece (i.e. 1 foot) so the cost is really low (under $10).

    • @lorenzocalabro4785
      @lorenzocalabro4785 9 лет назад

      +jAMMAN798 First of all, thank you for the answer! :) I didn't do my *huge* props on you for this amazing work. Ok, I got already a generic speaker cable, but did you put manually the pins after you bought one or you bought it like we see on video? If at one point there are these pins, at the other there is the female jack part. I wonder if I can find a cable already done in that way, or I have to fabricate one on my own.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      Lorenzo Calabrò Thank you! The tabs at the end of the speaker cable can be purchased at any electronic, hardware or automotive store. They usually come in a package of 10.

    • @lorenzocalabro4785

      +jAMMAN798 so I'll have to buy a pack of these connectors and a female jack speaker cable and the trick is done? Sorry if I do plenty of questions, but I'm not so practical in such things. 😅
