I don't think people know how ground breaking this video was. First the innovation of the mini-documentary at the beginning and then the actual visit of a Western pop band to China. China in the 80's was still a closed communist society and nowhere near as open as it is today. It would be like a band visiting North Korea today.

@@chrisolagrim3597 Me too, Especially knowing that Communist China only had access to western music starting around 1978, so the fact that by the mid 1980’s the PRC got their first taste of New Wave British Pop back then and the band to do it was Wham! is like a huge cultural event I feel got forgotten (I know the western groups that played in the USSR were as important later, but I feel this is as big). It’s also important to remember, this was pre 1989 Tiananmen Square, it’s amazing to see this tbh. 🕊&❤️ in 2022

hearing stories about Wham! from my mom makes me so happy. How she had their posters, singing their songs in her school functions. If one thing I could turn back in time, was to take her to George Michael or Wham concert....

uhh.. Bubble burstingtime.. that is not some kind of magical connection.. that is simply human nature coupled by marketing.. I Reccomend you travel some and see what that connection you speak of are really doing to other cultures and people.
Heard this song a few days ago here in 2021. Hadn't heard it since I was a kid of 8 years old back in the 80s. I had to pull my car over and just sit and listen to it. I was put into a time machine where the world was happy. Some things sucked, some people were treated poorly, some people lived in poverty, but there was still a vibe and spirit of joy back then. Fast forward to me being 45 years old in 2021 and I sit and wonder "How could anyone have this much joyful energy that almost 40 years later they can STILL make me smile and make me tap my feet?" Make a commitment TODAY to be THAT person people remember 40 years ago, and when they remember you, they smile and feel the joy. The stress and anxiety of today will be NOTHING in 40 years.
I'm the same age, and you pretty much summed it up. That's exactly how I feel when I hear great songs like this one from the 80s. Miss that era...there was none like it.
Maybe nobody has mentioned it, but if George Michael visited China today, he would not recognise much of it. A lot has changed. He was a great soul and I love his music--I am sure he is still popular in China, even with all its changes over the past 40 years.
One of the many reasons why I love George Michael & Wham is that he&they always made the audience so happy, smiling and dancing. I'm grateful I was lucky to have that experience once in my life. Thank you George for everything. I'll miss you forever.
I wish comments had a weekly or monthly reminder anniversary as a remind you to come listen to it . I'd leave this comment here and be reminded to listen every week or month.. Busy lifestyle doesn't give us time.
When they gave the concert in my city in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall(as you can see in the video), Guangzhou, China, I was like one of those little boys in this video. I also remembered a local newspaper reported that a member of the band got too excited during their flight to Guangzhou, a panic attack or something like that. Love George!
I've always wondered what happened to the little children in the video. I remember how fascinating this video was to many of us here in the West...when the veil between the East and the West had been opened a little.
4:51 So what did the announcer say in Mandarin? When I first saw this back in the '80s with those young people dancing away in the auditorium, my first thought was "What would Mao think if he saw this?".
She said: ...is going to give us a wonderful performance. Let's welcome them on stage with rapturous applause. I don't think Mao would let Wham! enter into China, but Deng Xiaoping did.
Now they have their own little kids. A lot have changed since then. It is kind of emotional watching the city I live 30 years ago. Yet the concert venue, the Hall, virtually remains the same. It is still like that in the video.
Introduced my granddaughter to Wham. She's loving the music. I'm happy to pass on the love of the music to her. She told me today that she has a crush on George. ❤
I’m the same age as George Michael. Loved him, had such a crush back in the day, loved Wham and George on his own. And yes, there was nothing like 80s and 70s music, I still listen to it all the time. Not like today’s garbage.
I cannot emphasize enough how mature, classy and non-judgemental George Michael's introductory commentary here was, especially given the time and given his age. This really elevates my appreciation of him not only as an artist but also on a personal level. He understood that he was not sent there to preach, lecture or moralize and that this was a completely new experience, a journey into the unknown for both sides which should simply be experienced and left to its own device rather than overanalyzing it or forcing it into the political context of the day. Some other artists may not have been able to stay so grounded, non-judgemental and open-minded. So, kudos to him for this, he really did manage to serve as a cultural ambassador here in the best sense of the term!
I was ten when this came out and too be frank was never a fan but as the years have passed, I find myself frequently listening to 80s songs that literally almost have my eyes welling up remembering long lost family members and various memories!
Im listening to this in December 2024. Wham ! Was a phenomenon. Hit the world by storm.

I love the reaction from the audience. A lifetime of oppression and when they get some freedom in their ears they go mad🤣. Beautiful
🕊&❤️ in 2022
@@MrKenichi22 and now it’s oppressive again
@@humanchannel7825 To be fair, China’s goal was to technologically and economically equal the west, not to become a free Democracy.
Cool Breeze it wasn't as fun as it looked a lot of things happened there that were scary kids got beat for dancing George didn't find out till after the concert
George Michael and Midge Ure best 80,s voices in one single.
-Freedom (Wham)
-If a was
FLAWLESS. Simply perfect❤❤
cant stop my tears, thanks for the songs..
Give me back the 80s... Great decade for music. Todays music is shit!
Same. Feel so emotional watching this.
😢😪😪 I feel the same way 💗 What a time to be young and carefree, listening to this song on the radio on the way to the beach with your friends, or just having fun 💜
Indeed. Its heavy on my heart, makes me cry, i remember where i was when it came out & what was going on then.
That’s only because you’ve forgotten all the shite music from the 40 years ago. Time is a filter.
90s had also been a great decade for music
I like how the majority of the audience don't understand the language but enjoy the music.
+GenXtasy ...Music is a universal language of it s own
So nice to see young people having fun - now, if only the older generation.....
This is my favourite song of theirs.
Mine, too.
same here :(
Mine too...which is strange because many people have never heard it. They usually like wake me up.
song is amazing and the lyrics too
He was a good human being
George Michael will be irreplaceable there will never be another one like him.
hearing stories about Wham! from my mom makes me so happy. How she had their posters, singing their songs in her school functions. If one thing I could turn back in time, was to take her to George Michael or Wham concert....
Isn't it beautiful? We come from all different countries/continents from the world, but we all share the same love together ! Peace and love to you all! ❤️✌️☺️
+BLUEBOORABBITT thnx from Copenhagen 😊🙏❤️
Just wish everyone was like that
uhh.. Bubble burstingtime.. that is not some kind of magical connection.. that is simply human nature coupled by marketing.. I Reccomend you travel some and see what that connection you speak of are really doing to other cultures and people.
Die Hard Fan, I am well traveled. Care to elaborate?
i dont see intergration as a positive
What POP MUSIC!!! George Michael was GENIUS!!! Man, from 5:30 minutes onwards I can't stop the tears ... SO NOSTALGIC!!! 😍🎶🎧🎵🙌❣️
Back when music meant something. Rest easy George
Fast forward to me being 45 years old in 2021 and I sit and wonder "How could anyone have this much joyful energy that almost 40 years later they can STILL make me smile and make me tap my feet?"
Make a commitment TODAY to be THAT person people remember 40 years ago, and when they remember you, they smile and feel the joy. The stress and anxiety of today will be NOTHING in 40 years.
I certainly hope you're right. Im also 45,young enough to remember those times, though not necessarily young anymore! Caught in the middle
@@trtb056 My children! I'm 76 and a George fan !!!!
I'm the same age, and you pretty much summed it up. That's exactly how I feel when I hear great songs like this one from the 80s. Miss that era...there was none like it.
Omg, you' re right !
So eloquently put, bravo sir.
I'm here because Wham and George Michael's music are still part of my life. Thank you! R.I.P ☺️
Takes me back to my teens..Bring back the eighties please!
+1000
A masterpiece of 80s tunes.
Yes!!!
I wish comments had a weekly or monthly reminder anniversary as a remind you to come listen to it .
I'd leave this comment here and be reminded to listen every week or month..
Busy lifestyle doesn't give us time.
George Michael RIP your music will last forever
So sad today. I can't believe it. This song definitely takes me back to my teen years in the 80's. Long live the 80's! Love live George Michael!
couldnt agree more with u charles...my teen idol from the 80s...RIP Georgie

Same here.
Every person deserves freedom. Personal, Sexual, Religious and more
We are a free people and George knew this from the beginning.
this is a very different kind of freedom
I was 13yo in 1984 when I first heard it and now is 2024 53yo still enjoying it damn !
RIP Mr. Michael .... one of two songs I really loved by him.
Yes, we need Freedom.
What was the general feeling of the man on the street about Wham's visit and western culture in general?
Introduced my granddaughter to Wham. She's loving the music. I'm happy to pass on the love of the music to her.
She told me today that she has a crush on George. ❤
Can only improve her life compared to rubbish today, both my boys love 80's music and I will definitely play it to grandchildren when I can ❤
Not many good things about being older but we did grow up when music was AT ITS BEST!
martind586 You got that right brother!
I’m the same age as George Michael. Loved him, had such a crush back in the day, loved Wham and George on his own. And yes, there was nothing like 80s and 70s music, I still listen to it all the time. Not like today’s garbage.
very true indeed rip
Strongly agree
Yes we did.
one of the best songs Wham ever did RIP George Michael...x
It's hard to believe unless you were there, but George Micheal was as big as The Beatles and as hot as Elvis back in 1987
I cannot emphasize enough how mature, classy and non-judgemental George Michael's introductory commentary here was, especially given the time and given his age.
The only singer I could hit his range perfectly. Love my tenors!!! U will be missed George!!
Im crying. WE LOVE YOU GEORGE!!!
I miss that beautiful smile,And everything else With a heart of GOLD RIP Beautiful soul🌹

I was ten when this came out and too be frank was never a fan but as the years have passed, I find myself frequently listening to 80s songs that literally almost have my eyes welling up remembering long lost family members and various memories!
