Try these steps before sending your Playstation 5 in for repair which could result in a hefty bill that could have been avoided!
I know this video is several months old, but after taking apart my optical/disc drive about 10 times trying to fix it (after my toddler jammed something in there) the missing ingredient for me was making sure the gear slider was in the “disc ejected” position. My gears kept jamming because I had no idea there was a certain starting position that slider needed to be in, I assumed the system would know and adjust to default accordingly. This video saved my PS5! Thanks, man!
Does this mean you could just use the hole on the outside of the disc drive to manually crank the disc out? Without having to disassemble the whole drive?

@@abanieleahk I actually have an update on this! I used tape to hold those black disc drive flaps open and looked inside with a flashlight. Then I eventually noticed a weird copper piece on what would be the bottom/right side of the disc drive (depending on if you're looking at it upright/sideways).
Anyway, I noticed it wasn't a real part of the disc drive. It was an aquarium souvenir smashed penny that had gone missing a while before.
I laid on the floor next to the sofa and propped the console on the cushion above my head (so that, if the penny came loose, it would fall OUT, not deeper inside the PS5).
Got it out and didn't have to pay a huge fee or take my PS5 apart!

Great video I took my drive apart and when it went back together it would not load the disc doing the clicking and your video helped me fix it.

Thank you so much. The oddest thing happened when I open the two cover of the PS5. When I began to unscrew the disk part I barely fully turn the screw but just a small twist & all of a sudden I heard something slide back in place & I was like hold on this thing did not just slide back before I even began & soon as I turn the ps5 on & inserted the disk it grabbed it & I was like phew I was saved because I am a new PS5 owner & know so little about this console other than how to open the cover correctly. Anyway thanks for the guide. Ps they were mean for making it harder to do our own repairs lol.

I had this same issue on my ps5. It happened after manually ejecting a game, which I was doing to fix vibrations in the drive (a process recommended by sony on their website). After ejecting the game I plugged in the system and tried to insert it. It didnt go in and made some nasty sounds. I believe this happened because I didnt turn the system on first, or when ejecting the disk i didnt go far enough with the screw before pulling the disk out.
Following your video, I was able to fix the problem and my drive works again. Another thing of note is the magnetic spindle was stuck down when it should have been popped up, so I had to pop that up myself. I was able to pop it up by taking the chassis off like in the video, but playing around with the gears caused it to get stuck again. I found out if you turn the manual eject screw while there is no disk in the system the spindle will get stuck in the down position and the wedge/lever is not strong enough to pop it back out. If anyone is having this problem make sure you do not move the manual eject screw after realigning the gears.

@@tygah5203 Its still noisy after fixing it sadly. I've discovered that some of the PS5 disk drives are just noisy and you can't do anything to make it more quiet. The issue I had was the gears came out of place when trying to make the drive more quiet. Thankfully I was able to fix it. That's all I can remember.

For anyone watching - before you take apart your console, try a system update in safe mode(hold power button). I couldn’t insert discs and was beginning to open the system up but turns out the issue wasn’t hardware related.
*Even if the PS5 in regular mode says you’re up to date, still check in safe mode.

I've been fighting with this disk drive for about 3 days now trying everything under the sun I thought the gear had to be touching the teeth in the track. I haven't tried this yet I'm going to right now, you might have just saved the day and quite possibly the entire month will update shortly

Problem: Cuando desarmé la PS5 el engrane estaba a la mitad... lo liberé como lo menciona en el video y problema resuelto, ahora no hace ruido al encender, acepta y lee los discos.

hey everyone. I recently got my new ps5! I'm super excited to have one, I have bought the ps5 disc edition. my first few days of having it was amazing! I got my favorite games on it and they ran perfectly! On the 5th day of having it, my first disc game arrived! it is the new AFL 23, since I'm Australian and a fan of AFL, my ps5 is booted up and running, I take out the disc from the cover, and I put the disc print facing left, as I heard on videos. the disc just does not go in, I thought most PS5s just suck up the disc and it's meant to work? I was talking to one of my mates that came to my house today, and he says there's foam blocking the way of the disc, which could be true but I do see the cut bit for the disc to go in, he said maybe they forgot to take it off in production, however, I took out the side panel and I could see they glued it down meaning it should stay there to protect the disc drive, ill send a picture of it. but when I boot up my ps5 and it makes the first noises, I'm able to put in the disc perfectly fine, however, my ps5 can't read the disc. A disc can be mildly forced into the disc, but it's not on far enough so it doesn't read. i have my ps5 in the Horizontal position but I tried vertical and that didn't fix anything either. im hoping this is a self fixable matter because i don't want to go to a shop to fix it. I hope I get a response that works as I'm eager to play the game. thanks and goodbye

Update it's still not working however it is looking properly lined up now so I'm one step closer but for some reason it won't suck the disc into the system it'll power on but it won't suck in the disc could this be the motor that turns the gears I can't imagine that burning out but I can't think of any other reason why it doesn't power on to suck in the disc also I kind of greased up the rollers thinking it would be smoother and then I found out that they're supposed to be a little bit sticky to pull the disc but still that wouldn't explain the motors not turning on or any sounds any ideas brother? I'll probably try three or four more times and then after that I'll just give this console away to somebody I dislike and let them deal with the stress

I bought my ps5 from a friend and it makes a rattling noise every time I turn it on, won’t accept disks and I don’t know if there is a disk stuck in it, I think there’s somthing wrong with the disk drive but I’m not tryna break my console by messing somthing up. Any suggestions?
Update 27/08/21: after 5 days from the receiving I had the same problem with the white component, with also the first spring inside the cd drive that go out from the place.

Hi, I did everything in your video, from unscrewing to cleaning, cleaned the rollers, put them back on and adjusting the lever etc however when I test it, it still won’t accept the disc. It seems that the roller won’t budge. This is my problem now and I don’t know what caused it.
Before I can still insert disc and it will say unrecognizable disc. Then I play a downloaded game from PS Plus(like a warmup game), insert the disc, and it will read and I can start playing. Now, all of a sudden, can’t insert disc anymore that’s why I followed your video. Any additional pointers/suggestions please?
Not sure if you still have this issue or if this will help you but what I did when I took it all apart in the drive was put a little tiny tiny small amount of Grease or even WD-40 with a toothpick or a Q-tip and just put it on the gears and the rollers but not enough that it's wet just a tiny bit to lube it up so they spend easily freely and smoothly it worked for me just remember don't get it on the lens and don't pour it directly on just use it cotton swab or something
Hello I disassembled it to remove the disco. Put it back together. It takes and ejects the cd’s perfectly but it’s not reading. Getting message to insert the disc. Note, I didn’t touch or tamper the lens. Removed the two small (forgot their names, the flat ones)cables without ripping and the small plug cable and put them back on.

Mine doesn’t pull the game in all the way it’ll pull the game but I can still see a bit of the disc not fully in so it just make a loud noise and just doesn’t read the game
I suspect that my problem with the drive is that my gear (as in your video timing 6:44) fell from an even space onto the teeth and therefore the ps5 drive "thinks" that the disc is in the console's drive and starts to rotate these rollers, although the disc it doesn’t have it. Help me figure it out please

Does doing any of this void my warranty? I have a 3 day old ps5. Every time i put in a disc it wont eject it without making a clicking/gear slipping noise and usually takes a few power on/off cycles to get it to eject. I just dont want to take it apart and look at the drive and try to figure it out if it makes my warranty smoke.
If you cant afford to pay for a repair or a new console dont ever do any that could destroy the warranty…

Hello, i have issues where disc while inserting goes really slow in vertical sometimes to the point it gets stuck halfway and drive works rly loud however for some reason if i blow into the disc drive the disc would go smooth once again and it would stay that way if i put it horizontal but as soon as i changd to vertical again after some time the disc would go rly slow again. What could be the cause of that i doubt its big issue since blowing temporary solves it....

Yes, you can still use the disc version of a ps5 as a digital.
Hello, sir. I have a problem with my ps5's diskdrive. A sticky dvd got stock in it( I know. Very stupid) After 4 hours I pulled it out, by taking the ps5 apart and the disk drive. (The black sticker screwing trick didn't work, since the dvd was sticky as hell) so i put the ps5 back. It now has no problem taking and ejecting the disc. It beeps, makes funny noises as if it would swollow the disc for 5 seconds and then it won't read the disc. Any suggestions?

So if there is a disk stuck inside there is no possible way it will take another disk ?
you can open it, on the drive use a small phillips screw driver to break the black sticker and you can turn it to manually eject the disc.

Hi, I am having an issue with my disc drive as well and an issue with my software update. It keeps giving me this error su-101312-8. I don’t know if the two are linked in any way but my ps5 isn’t taking in my discs as well. It isn’t installing the update either. Whenever I try is always gives me this error and says something went wrong. Any help with this?
I have this EXACT same issue and error code. I have tried to disassemble the optical drive and ensure everything is in functioning order according to this video mechanically. It seems I’m not getting power though, as my drive doesn’t even want to take the disk. The software also won’t update because I think the system needs to recognize that the drive is there and working to update the system software. I’ve literally been stuck in this loop for a couple months now and Sony has no clue. Of course, launch model so out of warranty.
I’m considering trying to get some new ribbon cables or trying a new optical drive altogether, but if ANYONE finds a fix for this PLEASE share!!!

I couldn't figure what was wrong but I had wi-fi hooked up but that was first game I got him and it works now idk why you have to do so much now and days

Same here I literally just got it out the box I noticed unplugging it helped it work but to have to unplug and replug it back into just eject a disc is crazy I may have to take it back and try another if keeps up , I was hoping to be able to play without internet connection in a new house and no internet just built , using a hotspot to do software update then home to be able to play without internet any way good luck hope you can get yours worked out or returned and get another that works , my new Xbox had same issue it’s almost like they don’t want us using discs idk whats up lately everything I’ve bought new is not working right or built like crap

Theoretically you could just lift the hand up or push it with a disk until it clicks...
Pro Tip: If your PS5 isn't ejecting the disk, try laying it horizontally and ejecting the disk again

I took mine to a place that says they can fix it, they simply tried to replace the disc drive, claimed that the console was bad. I won’t be selling it to them, because I’m sure that’s why they couldn’t fix it. If it’s broken, and they cannot fix it, then they can buy it from me for cheap, and then sell it to someone else for more.

I just got one a month ago and the DVD drive is already not working. A disc got stuck in it and when I restarted it , it ejected itself. Now it won't accept a disc at all, acting like there's already one in there.

Sony is fixing/replacing it now. The update wouldn't finish and I think it's because it thinks a disc is in the drive.

@@swagkidm10 they received it on the 4th, so it's been 2 weeks. They said 7 to 10 business days so perhaps technically it's been 10 weekdays. 11 really cause FedEx showed they delivered it the day before SEI says it received it. Probably took a day to scan the truckload of broken garbage they get in a day. I wonder what percent of ps5s have come back to then or had to be repaired by a third party? Even still I am excited to get it back and in full working order. I've had a wonderful experience with my PS4 pro. I'm looking for that in the 5. So far we aren't off to a great start. Why don't they drop the discs all together and let people port

When you can't eject the game out of your ps5, try to first hit the option button-Stop the game-wait untill the fan and disc stops working and it's quite-then eject.
