- These are the must-have features on my tractors or else I'm not buying it. After a few years of owning this particular tractor, I"m confident that I wouldn't own this tractor without these things.

One critical factor you didn't touch on, dealer support, that is a game changer in my opinion, no matter what color tractor you buy if the dealer won't or can't provide the parts and service you need in a timely and honest way you end up with a lawn ornament. The deciding factor when i purchased my DK55, same place you bought yours, was all the folks at that dealership were committed to customer service, they were then ( 2009) and still are after many years.
That third function option is a total game changer, I will never own another tractor without it.
Hi Sandy one thing i could do not without is a 4 in 1 bucket once you use it you can not go without it anymore specially picking up gravel or dirt it can also be used for grading both ways
Hi Sandy. In 2.5 years, I've put about 200 hours on our JD 2025. I use it for a variety of chores around our 5 acre lot. I'm almost 73 now. The tractor allows me to work at many chores my back wouldn't handle.
For the past 2 weeks, I've been clearing a spot in the woods for a new storage shed. The tractor has moved slash, logs, the topsoil I've stripped, and ripped up a few small stumps.
The only time I really miss a cab is at -25 (in central Alberta) when I'm clearing snow from our long driveway. Even though I dress warmly, by the time I get off the tractor, after 2 or more hours, I'm very stiff and almost frozen solid.

I bought my first tractor this year. It's a 20 years old, 2WD, no front end loader, no cab, no hydraulic functions, but it's doing what I need it to do for now. I would like to have all the features you mentioned, especially the 4WD and FEL. You did a great job explaining everything.
Sandy, I bought a kioti nx5510 cab, hydrostatic, and loader a few years ago. I bought it used and absolutely love it. I wish I had this setup 30 years ago .
I find tire chains to be a great help in winter for hilly icy conditions.
Actually now that you mention it. That would for sure be an add-on I'd have to have. I don't think I could live without the ones I have
Excellent video, Sandy. Tractor size is all important. Bigger isn't always better. On my 3-acre place, forty-years ago, a 25hp, Ford 4WD was perfect. My nephew had 70hp and 141hp Kubota's 4WD on his 170-acre ranch. The 70hp was enough for me. It would do everything I needed, to include hauling three round bales of hay (3,400 pounds+/-). The 141hp... too big and too many levers, knobs, and dials. It's so big, it's uncomfortable to operate. As for a cab; I consider it a required item. I've put about 300 hours on his (cab enclosed) excavator. You mentioned several positives about a cab. It's heated, air conditioned, and probably equipped with a radio, CD player, or something to make music. IT KEEPS DUST AND DIRT OUT WHEN YOU'RE WORKING!!! It prevents limbs and branches from 'bitch-slapping' you while you're working. There's nothing worse than being directly downwind when working on a dusty project, and MOST IMPORTANT...The first time you knock a wasp nest out of a tree, or stir a hive, that (enclosed) cab will pay for itself a hundred-fold.
Finally, for the 'first time buyer,' go talk to someone who has a ranch or farm similar to yours. Find out what size tractor he would find ideal, and what implements he recommends. I box blade is of little use if what you need is a snow blower, a PTO-driven roto-tiller for a small (less than an acre) might be more practical than a disk harrow. A brush-hog mower is better for clearing weeds in a large field, but a sickle-bar mower is better if you're cutting a hay field. Finally, a front loader should be a required item. It's limitations are only governed by your imagination. And the list goes on.... (The saleman will gladly sell you everything you desire. Better to get a couple things you need, and then add implements as you determine the need)....

The only real benefit of buying all the implements at the time you buy your tractor is you can roll it into the same financing as your tractor if you are going to use financing that is

I love my RX7320. it's not HST, but the power shuttle is very sweet, and lots of power. Great videos Sandy.
Excellent advice Sandy!! If a person is buying new, it simply doesn't pay to skimp on a feature that you will regret not having forever or constantly looking to upgrade because you didn't get it the first time!!! Also, if a person is looking at used tractors, it is important to know what parts are of the highest value and anything it lacks, it must first be able to do the job that you need it to do, and secondly it must be at a price that you are compensated for anything missing or substandard!!

That's a well thought out list of essential tractor features. I agree with them all. The only thing I will add is get the next larger size engine. If you think 40hp is enough, get the 45 or 47 hp option.

One thing I would add is 3pt. Quick hitch. I consider that a must.
I do like those as well Russ. Only reason I didn’t add it to my necessities list is because it doesn’t work on every attachment I have so I’d have to take it on and off

I bought a used (2014) Case iH, Farmall 45B CVT… wow that’s quite the model name lol
Anyways it had 900 hours when we got it about 6 years ago. It was leased by a township for snow removal for 3 years. It’s a great machine. It has a cab which was a bonus. Probably couldn’t afford a new one with a cab but this worked out well. Came with a loader and bucket. I bought a 90” HLA snow plow for the front. Driveway is over an km long.
Eventually bought forks and also a winch which has been great. It has 1600 hours or so on it now. Been a great machine.
That sounds like a great machine! That snow pusher sure would be handy too I bet

@@sawingwithsandy someday I hope to have a nice tractor for rear attachments as well as my T190, but at that point I may end up feeling spoiled! Then the hardest decision is which toy.. er... tool to use first!

your tractor has a crazy good FEL... most bigger tractor doesnt lift as much or very little more compared to their size. the DK SE was a diamond and still is.

I can personally recommend the Kioti RX7320. The one drawback is they are not available with a Hydrostatic transmission. Mine has a power shuttle transmission. Tim in northern Tennessee
Agree with all of that my tractor cab is great in winter but no aircon but we don't have the bugs you have so I have addapted it so the doors come off in the summer works well I have 2 spools on the back but one is run forward to the loader so only one usable so I ran some hoses to a 3 lever hydraulic valve I fitted in the cab and ran hoses to 3 sets of connectors I fitted into the rear wall so now I have three rear remotes really handy for the hydraulic top link and topper side shift I was lucky that my loader came with 3 functions for the 3 in one bucket and grapple and when I need the third one on for the front mounted hedge trimmer I just lock the lever over fab little tractor and 40hp like yours but the front loader is not as powerful as your but I get by
Hello Sandy. It was good to see the cabin again. I was hanging around for just about everything you spoke about except for the actual buying of the tractor. As for the buildings you have, I think the shed where you do some work and the initial sawmill platform and storage sheds behind it are all that I have not seen being built by you using the wood that you milled. I am sure that this video may have been the point where someone that was thinking about purchasing a tractor helped to finalize that decision. I look forward to seeing the changes you will be making around the sawmill.

I know what ya mean there. I sure like shopping for tractors and all other equipment but the whole buying part is what keeps me up at night lol. Coming up Saturday there will be another sawmill video coming out. I'm glad you have been following the build series. Should be a good one!
Good video. I'm currently shopping for a larger tractor and my latest review had me considering gear drive. I see a few benefits of gear drive the biggest being cost savins. However, I don't think I would be happy placing logs and doing loader work with it...I expect to go with HST.
The 3 point hitch control at the rear should be on all tractors
You get little bit more horsepower out of a gear drive than a hydrostatic, which may be a big deal depending on what you’re doing. For me I don’t do a lot of repetitive loading work. if I do any loading work it’s just sort of here and there so I went with a gear drive and it has been fine for general land maintenance, logging and some construction work (grading and loading).
I have a cab tractor. I did break the door glass. Which is the whole door. Not in the woods though. Caught it on a post on my way out of the pole barn.
Sorry to hear that. I"m sure my time is coming too. I'm just hoping it's no fault of my own (although is probably will be) as that way I won't feel guilty lol
Sandy, Gadday eh!, just want to say i love your videos, always chock full of informative topics. Always wanted to play with big toys although i run in a different sphere than you. I have my own toys welding.woodworking,mechanic, aspiring machinist and by trade avionics electronics/electrical.

My bud bought a portable mill and i went and set it up for him after watching your invaluable advice. (After all it’s simple mechanical stuff).Just wish i would have played with one before he bought it. There are so many must have time saving additions he should have on the machine in order to make it a one man job.

Good info. Live PTO and Hydo with a loaded a must. Only 4x4 for small tractors.

Good information for some looking to buy, i guess ill just keep my old Kubota 275,no cab, stick transmission, but i can always dream.

I have a DK 5310 no cab I keep it in a garge use it for firewood or helping the neighbour on his ranch would not have one without a grapple the third function is kit is most useful for moving or lifting logs or moving the dump trailer.

My neighbour has the Kioto RX7320. It’s awesome. Quite a bit larger than mine actually. I have the industrial tire tread on mine and he has the agricultural (R1?)ones. Big difference in traction too.
I actually cut grooves in the lugs of my rear tires to provide a bit better traction in winter and it worked out well. There’s a few hills on the driveway and in the winter even in 4x4 I’m sliding around alot.
I sure like those RX7320. I’d imagine if the money tree ever falls I’d upgrade to that unit

Good advice. I'm shopping around right now and my use case is very similar to yours! I have a JD now, but I'm leaning toward the Kioti DK series so far as a favourite!
