I am Greek and so is my wife, my maternal grandfather fought in the war with Turkey he was taken prisoner and held for 5 years. My Grandfather lived with us in Canada and I heard all of his stories growing up. The stories made me sad, and then very angry. In 2013 my wife wanted to take a break from our annual trip to Greece and suggested we visit Turkey. I did not want to go for all that i had heard growing up, my wife persisted and said "go visit the place your grandfather fought and was held for 5 years" I was hesitant but also curious I wanted to see where all the things my grandfather told me about, so we went..... We toured the whole of Turkey starting in Istanbul I was amazed to see how much Greek history was there, but more importantly I had the chance to meet people in small villages had coffee in small cafenia like we have in our villages, the people looked the same, sitting outside enjoying coffee and telling their stories just as we did in our villages. If you would have blind folded me and dropped me off in one of these Turkish villages i would have thought i was in Greece, in my village just outside of Tripoli ....(Thanas)The people were kind, warm, and generous. Politics and politicians along with religion have started many wars and bitter hatred between the people.Let the politicians play their games LIVE and LET LIVE ! In the end I'm very happy my wife took me to Turkey, i have let go of a lot of negativity and now have my own perspective of a country and a people i was taught to dislike.

Best thing to do is to get over the past because you cannot change it. The way I deal with it is that I do not blame either side for a certain outcome but rather just see it as history and learn. For instance my Turkish friend was stabbed by a crazy Greek dude in 2004 but I cannot allow that to make me hate all Greek people.

I have visited a couple of times Turkey and tons of times Greece (mainly in the summer). Both countries are super! People are nice and friendly. The food is super. And the atmosphere is fantastic. And when I visit these neighboring countries I see many commonalities with Bulgaria.

I have messaged you here, as I can respond-tag you on this msg, because you responded to this persons msg... Anyways, I hope you’re getting my msgs, as I hope I am not wasting my time responding, lol!
      So here is my msg...
I somewhat disagree with your statement regarding your 7th point. Greece’s population isn’t homogeneous. At best it is between 80-85% native Hellenic. Greeks/Hellenes will probably tell you that they’re all homogeneous in a civic nationalist solidarity of their identity, which is fine; as a lot of them want more people to share in their culture and feel Hellenic/Greek. But if we are speaking scientifically, Greece’s modern population aren’t all native to Mainland Greece and it’s Islands. I could refer to the many minorities within Greece, like the ethnic Turks or Albanians obviously (Albanians however overlap/cluster genetically with Greeks).
So I’m specifically referring to Greek citizens who identify as ‘Greek’, but who are genetically only a small fraction ‘ethnic Greek’, or barely Greek at all (like Cappadocians). These groups are the ‘Pontic Greeks, Cappadocian Greeks and Cypriot Greeks’. These 3 aforementioned groups in Greece together represent probably ~12.5% of the population (possibly as high as 15%). Pontics are the biggest group, representing anywhere between ~5-10% of the population. Pontics and Cappadocians are almost the same as other Turkish and Armenian people genetically speaking, and have very similar phenotypes to Western and Northern Turks (which is especially noticeable in their eyes).
      ...(to be continued)

    • @christopherzantiotis
      @christopherzantiotis 3 года назад +3

      @@gus1thego
...(continued) Pontics and Cappadocians ended up in Greece because they were dispossessed of their land and a genocide was committed against them, as well as the Armenians and Assyrians. A population exchange occurred at the same time between Greece and Turkey, exchanging Christians who ‘identified as Greek’ with Muslim Turks. So this leads me to my next partially disagreement, which is with your 9th point regarding looks. The genetics of the Greeks native to mainland Greece and its islands is indigenous, dating back to the Mycenaean (~1900BC) and Minoan (~3000BC) periods, but also genetically ~70%, to the Neolithic times (~7500BC). Some small genetic shifts occurred from the Mycenaean period to now, mainly being the Slavic invasions in the Greco-Roman Byzantine era.
So back to the ‘looks’ comment you made...
You mentioned the ‘majority’ of Greeks have European looks. But I must inform you that because natively ethnic Greeks are genetically ‘European’, they automatically have European looks. Because it doesn’t matter what your subjective opinion is on what ‘European’ looks are or what they should be, because being genetically European means that whatever your ‘look’ is, it is by default European. I guess unless you’re a nordicist... But that is not scientific/objective obviously!
Now I highly recommend you google a Quora response post I wrote... The title of the Quora Question is: “Are Greeks considered White”. I am the top question respondent, so you don’t need to scroll down. The post I wrote explains what I’ve already mentioned above, but gives details using an accurate genetic Autosomal PCA chart, which I circle and explain. In it I circle and explain where the Pontic and Cypriot populations are genetically relative to the Ethnic native Greek population. I didn’t explain where the Cappadocians are on there. But they are close to the Pontics Genetically (within the Turkish Cluster).
So type in google: ‘ Are Greeks Considered White Quora ‘
      It’s well worth the read!
PS... I did forget to mention one thing, and that is that some percentage of Western Coastal Turks have some similar looks to some Greeks, mainly Dodecanese Greeks. This is because some Turks have a significant percentage of Greek DNA ( less than

As a Greek who's lived abroad half his life,I'm gonna say this.
In our times,I find southern Europeans and Spaniards in particular to be the closest to us in terms of lifestyle, mentality etc.
Also, belonging to a certain branch of Christianity(Orthodoxy) is not as important as some may think.
If that was the case, then we should be sharing similarities with Russia or Ukraine and the same thing would go for Poland and Mexico due to Catholicism ,yet all of these countries are nothing but worlds apart.
Let's not forget, Greek culture was at its peak before Jesus was even conceived.
Despite the proximity and a few food similarities,I find Turkish culture very different in many ways and a lot more conservative, including the western part of the country that's supposed to be more similar to us.
Does that mean I don't like Turks?
No, quite the opposite, Turkish people have always been very kind to me.
I hope we can be good neighbours and wish nothing but peace for the future generations.

It is called Mediterranean my dear compatriot..ofcourse you will find several similarities with all nations around the big lake, however the main difference and the ironic thing at the same time is the type of influence the western countries received due to renaissance which was totally based upon the Grecoroman civilization when at the same time Greece was part of the mighty Ottoman empire. Therefore and for this reason mainly i would think that we share more cultural ties with our friends from the Eastern mediterranean region rather with the ones from the west..In regards to conservatism now i personally connect it directly to religion which was exactly the case in Greece until at least the late '70s when church was in full power before the collapse of all traditional institutions.

I think you can change it later but I don't think you can put there Atheism because Atheism is not a religion. Sometimes the government using that section for political benefits because it's easy to claim that 99% of People are Muslim in Turkey with religion section, but we all know that it's not true and it's just a number. Visit the oracle of Dodona, the Vikos gorge, go to Leukada and to the most beautiful island I’ve been to, Paxoi/Antipaxoi, go to a panegyri (village festival) and listen to epirote music, it is incredible. Climb the mountains of Tzoumerka and talk to the people living in villages to see how different they are to Athenians. Also, some Greek grandmas wear something similar to hijab sometimes, the μαντήλι/μαντήλα although it’s a Christian thing and has to do with mourning.
