Pockets that tie around the waist and can be hidden under clothes are a great option too for carrying things like money and cell phones. Keep the precious items close to your body, external bags can get jostled and items can fall out. There can also be sticky fingers in big crowds.
I was going to say the same thing! They can be really big, and then you can swap them amongst various skirt colors. It makes the skirts easier to sew. I make mine from ikea curtains or bedsheets. I will say, if you’re planning to really fill them up it helps to have tabbed stays on, as they help to keep the pockets from slipping and distribute the weight evenly. Same with heavy belt bags.
on footwear, if you opt for sneakers or whatever because they're more comfy than matchy-matchy shoes, you can always make shoe covers so they match better to your costume
WAIT I'VE SEEN THAT MUSHROOM VIDEO AND I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS YOU !! I love mushrooms and renaissance fashion and I thought those costumes were the coolest thing i had ever seen
Bonus cat! Very helpful. My hiker/camper boyfriend was thrilled with you mentioned the high-tech polyesters, but I can't actually SEW with that, so I just avoid poly... I was raised in the humid south. I don't wear plastic. :p Thank you!!
Currently building outfits for myself and my kid for MDRF, thank you for these perfectly timed suggestions! (High cut flat boots for the win, seriously... so many roots to battle!)
Going to the MD faire this weekend!! I was going to wear my sequin covered fairy costume but am thinking of pivoting due to rain/mud 😅 So this was super helpful, thank you!
Lots of great info, thank you. The "thrown together" outfits are a fabulous inspiration. I'm currently fostering a black kitten that makes high pitched protest sounds like Baby Bat lol. Little Yoongi will probably be a foster-fail because omg so cute!
I’ve been stalking a pair of tall vintage foundry boots for a few years now and after I saw that you have some, I finally pulled the trigger on them! Will you show us how you style your tall lace up boots for everyday wear? 😊
I’m preparing for my local faire next week and there’s no shade lots of dirt and it can get cold and windy this time of year so I’m doing a more casual simple look this year because like you said I just don’t have the energy to keep track of all my usual accessories. I figure go simple and I most likely will get a bodice or corset to add on while there lol. Targets wild fable is my FAVORITE brand to get for base pieces too! I wear that style as my usual outfits too!I made the mistake of wearing flats once, NEVER AGAIN, my feet were so blistered
I’m going to Renfaire for the first time this year and I have already done cosplay in the past for different events and I’m making my garb and I’m very excited about it
I knew Renaissance Fairs existed but definitely not anywhere close to me so I didn’t bother (despite absolutely loving historical fashion) So when a brand new one started within a reasonable driving distance I got really excited. Then I actually started looking into it and realized that Ren fairs are “Renaissance-ish but historically inaccurate to the point of tears so it’s actually just fantasy” My heart loves all the whimsy but my head hurts knowing they didn’t have corsets until the very end of the 16th century 😢 I’m still probably gonna go, but I’m lowering my expectations and I’m also might look weird wearing a 1490s gamurra😅
It depends on the fair! My local faire has plenty of fantasy vendors and attendees but it's organized by historical enthusiasts and it's centered on Queen Elizabeth's reign (I think they're in the 1580s now). There's another one in my state that does one weekend as-fantasy-as-you-want and the other weekend hardcore historical. So there's a solid chance you won't be alone!
@@erinshear8026 I actually ended up turning around in the parking lot and not going in. I had a terrible headache and didn’t want to spend $50* to do a lap then leave. I saw a lot of people dressed up (nothing accurate lol) but my dress turned out to be too small and I didn’t have time to fix it (and I did a mock up even! The extra layers messed it up somehow) *Tickets for me & husband Husband consoled me by saying that we should plan a trip to Minneapolis for the Minnesota Renaissance Fair instead because it probably would be a better experience, and we were already looking at taking our son to Mall of America. Next summer we will have fair in our city again and I’m told it’s really small but really good.
I checked out Linen Naive and fell in love with their designs. However, it seems they might be a scam. They are based out of China and their quality does not match the prices. I read some reviews online, and people are saying to not buy from them. What a shame.
Here in New Mexico, we have a Ren faire in Santa Fe that happens in early autumn, so of course desert place and summer weather sticking it will be hot but it is nice and the fairy grove has a lot of trees so best area to go and cool off from the heat while still outside, then there is a Celtic Fest in Edgewood the season is early spring, and since this is New Mexico the weather will be unpredictable and possibly very windy since it is behind the mountains and it will snow. I have been to both and they very are nice, if it is pretty windy expect some of the dealers might pack up and leave.
@@moth.faeriedo you have any suggestions for people with reduced mobility, I mainly use a wheelchair or walker and other people may use walking sticks etc..
Ok I need HELP!!!! Ohio is having Renn Faire end of August thru end of October I want to go to the Highlands Weekend as hubby is Scottish heritage and I’m Irish Heritage. He will not do. Costume but I want to. That weekend is Sept 21-22. So weather is Ohio and who knows! I’m thinking light for day and maybe a tartan shall for night I don’t tolerate heat exceptionally well
I know I want the linen underdress and something else a little h heavier if it drops I will have our tartan to use using this is my first run fair and I really want to have a good time as not only my heritage comes from the Scottish and Gaelic and Irish time periods. My husband is a descendent of the clan Campbell. I know I can’t get him costume but I would like to get him into one of their clan shirts with their myselfwith something of a dress with her crest and my son that would like to go possibly two sons who would love to go I need help how can I reach out to you? Can you help me through this?
Wanted to make a comment and ask a question. I want to maybe use leather in my outfit, but.. I have no idea how to wash and take care of leather. Maybe you or other individuals can help me out with this? I really want to make a pirate and eventually a Viking/Norse outfit, I hope I can pull it off. 😅 (Don’t know how to sew btw, oof.)
I don’t know much, but I do know that leather is hard to “wash”, like don’t throw it in the wash/soak it in water, it will shrink and become stiff. Always make sure you are wearing a base layer to keep the leather from getting too sweaty. Also, it will be more difficult to try to learn sewing leather. You could just sew it by hand or piece it together , tying it with leather strings (then it is adjustable if you gain/lose weight!) good luck :)
you mentioned preferring real leather over pleather. Do you happen to know where someone could find some pleather outfit pieces if they had that preference? My partner and I try to live as vegan as possible and ren fairs are always filled with leather, hides, bones, and other animal biproducts :/
so I try not to use pleather bc most pleather is plastic and doesn't biodegrade, but leafling bags makes really cute backpacks and belt bags made of vegan cork leather so definitely recommend them!
I had jaw Botox for teeth grinding and it’s narrowed my face a bit! Ty for the compliment, but I’d like to just personally request no more comments about weight as it’s something I tend to fixate on if brought to my attention! Edit- I mean comments specifically praising for weight loss, and this is more a general request for everyone not just for you! Sorry if that was confusing!
There's no need to fixate on anything. You looked good before and you look good now. Wanting to change or fix something is normal but you have nothing to worry about.
Adding to the costume year after year is what I've been doing. I compare it to levelling up a D&D or game character with new props and clothing pieces
love this way of looking at it ! 🥹⚔️
omg same!

Yes! Tie pockets are a great idea 🥰
i was going to comment this!! 18th century embroidered pockets are perfect
I've really grown to love runners belts for this. They go under my shirt and its just big enough to hold any essentials without adding awk bulk

Mdrf has some rough terrain 😅 I guess that’s the trade off for all nice shade
Old Navy also has a lot of cottage core dresses and in natural fibers (cotton & linen).

Why do you care what other people are wearing? You’re the type of person who ruins things for others. Thanks for not going.
I regularly go to Bicolline in Quebec, which is a week long larp. This advice is really good for clothing there too!
i really want to to go to bicolline next year!

ngl, I was kind of hoping for a dramatic romance novel pose at the end with those outfits, lol
Me having made my own RF costumes for 15 years -YTF have I never added pockets to my gowns
How do you find the themes? I’m looking in the Maryland Renaissance Festival and can’t see that

careful, viscose is really pollutant, tencell is the better alternative although slightly more expansive

It’s just a product of decades of diet culture, so still working on it!
