Fantastic analysis from Pastor John Piper, it always saddens me to see how many believers do not understand fundamental aspects of the Word and Christian worldview. There tends to be so much misconception around very important issues, and a series like this, where things are clarified, is of utmost importance.
True sin starts in the heart as a twisting of desire and is later manifested in actions.
Satan deceived Adam and Eve by saying that they would become like God in eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge (experience) of Good and Evil, yet they were already like God. Desiring to become like God and to be wise wasn't wrong, as a child desiring to be like their parent or to grow in understanding. But, that initial desire was twisted into a perverse desire to subvert God and call Him a liar. In their deception/rebellion they severed their trust and dependence upon God, they chose the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil over the Tree of Life, in other words rejecting a dependence on God, and like Satan, wanting to decide for themselves what was good and desiring an absolute independence from God. Eve chose to trust the Serpent more than God, thus calling God a liar. Adam knew better but chose to act in rebellion, in order to defy God. Their action ironically severed the fact that they were made in the image of God, and their spirits died, aka they became far less like God than they had formerly been. Sin also introduced the death and decay of all things through the curse. If they had chosen the Tree of Life, then they would have lived forever, but due to their flesh becoming hosts for sin, God exiled them from the Garden so that Sin would not dwell forever within this world through them. Even in the face of Original Sin, God had mercy in protecting us from its eternal influence and already planned for Jesus to be the Savior to conquer Sin and Death, as the Second Adam.

Jonathan Watson, Yes,it was indeed a very good explanation by pastor John... However, in the latest part he was a bit confused when he said that God cannot be tempted according to James, and yet Jesus was tempted because he believes that Jesus is God...

@Jonathan Watson , You wrote: ''But, that initial desire was twisted into a perverse desire to subvert God and call Him a liar.'' Sorry, to say this, but It seems your accusations to Adam and Eve is excessive... Can you please give a verse that support your accusation to Adam and Eve... They are your Great Grand parents.. You should have some respect to them.... And another thing, Satan did NOT deceived Adam... He deceived Eve only, but Adam listened to his wife to have a bite of the fruit because he was in-Love with his wife....

@@reynaldodavid2913Jo Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. Psalm 78:41
And 50 other verses that say God was tempted. But not effectually tempted. The same word carries different meanings.
I will say I didn't like this guy Piper's answer to this question. It came off confused and needlessly complex.
That said, Mr Piper is right on at least this much: Jesus is the Lord Jehovah.
      No, I won't be debating.

Question: Why would God allow Adam and Eve to touch the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but they could not eat of the fruit? When Eve was in her discourse with the Serpent, she mentioned that God told them not to touch the tree, but the scriptures never mentions that God gave them a commandment not to touch the tree.

I think it could be because touching the tree did not open their eyes. It was in eating the fruit that there eyes were opened

I have a question, after hearing this video say what John says from @0:58 to @1:48
"If some very strong person took hold of your arms and forced you to stab somebody, against your will, and you resisted with all of your might..."
I found a sin that a Nazarite could seem to commit contrary to this principle. Help me understand! Please.
“...If someone falls dead beside them, the hair they have dedicated will be defiled. They must wait for seven days and then shave their heads. Then they will be cleansed from their defilement. On the eighth day they must bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest at the entrance of the Tabernacle. The priest will offer one of the birds for a SIN OFFERING and the other for a burnt offering. In this way, he will purify THEM FROM THE GUILT THEY INCURRED THROUGH CONTACT WITH THE DEAD BODY." from Numbers 6:1-23, concerning the Nazarite vow.
The Nazarite had it in his heart to NOT TOUCH A DEAD BODY, but the person standing beside him die and fell against him. He has to offer two offerings - ONE A SIN OFFERING FOR HIS GUILT. Would THIS sin of the Nazarite send him to hell if he died, or would not offering the two offerings for this freak accident be the actual sin that would send him to hell?

eve sinned before eating the fruit, she lied about what GOD said. eve said you must not touch it, or you will die. That was a sin, that is not what God said.

No, According to you, the Bible was written before they sinned! They sewed fig-leaves together. Where did they learn those skills? What did they use for needles and thread? Fig-leaves are very fragile. Why did the thread not tear out immediately? Your answer would have to be: "Don't be a spoil-sport.'

That's a good thing. I believe tests help us to know where we are in our walk of faith. For example Abraham's test proves that he "fear God" (Genesis 22:12) without this test how would Abraham know. Test confirm our believes

I think the desire for sin is always sin. Maybe I'm miss understanding you but if I'm hearing you correctly I dont think I can agree. Jesus was hungry and desired food. He didnt need the devil to tempt Him for Him to feel that way. I think simply finding satan's temptation attractive is always sin. I dont believe Jesus ever found Satans temptations attractive at all. I think as humans we like to give ourselves alittle break with sin but in doing so we lower our image of God and I'm not on board with that. If you think finding sin attractive isn't sin then you dont believe God gave you a new heart with new desires. Your new desires depend on Jesus and if He ever saw sin attractive then consider yourself hopeless. Gladly He never did.

Dude has completely misprepresented the story of Jesus in the Wilderness... First of all there's no indication this was "Satan." The text simply uses the term 'daibolos' or devil which means false accuser/slanderer. This could be anybody. The only reason people think it's Satan besides the modern vernacular of the term we use as 'devil' is when he offers Jesus the land in exchange for worshiping him, which again, could be interpreted many different ways and not just an evil cosmic deity. Also, the accuser didn't 'tempt' Jesus. The word 'piratzpo' is better translated as "test" rather than tempt. Whoever this slanderer was, likely a Pharisee, was testing to see if Jesus was indeed the Messiah, as they often did for Messianic candidates. There was an entire team of Pharisees who's job it was to test these candidates. Which brings me to the bread. The accuser didn't offer Jesus bread. He said to Jesus, if you're hungry and the Messiah, why don't you just turn this rock into bread. Again, it was a test to see if he was the Messiah. Just like when he tested him to jump off the building. The only time Jesus was 'tempted' was when He was offered the Kingdoms in return for worshiping whoever this accuser was, and it was very unlikely "Satan."

Soooo the pharisee, in an instant, showed him all the kingdom's of the earth? (Luke 4:5-7). And says that their power has been given to him and that he can give it to anyone he chose?? What, did he draw these kingdoms in the sand??? I also highly doubt a Pharisee, in their reverence for God -- whose name they would not even use out of respect (preferring Adonai "my Lord" instead) -- would then direct Jesus to worship them:
"And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.” - verse 6-7
