I know I haven’t made any videos on it yet, but at the moment, Invincible is EASILY my favorite running animated series. As someone who has generally been pretty tired of superhero stuff recently, this series is such a breath of fresh air. A world that’s inspired by and pays homage to the comics that came before, while making a pointed effort to subvert expectations and more thoroughly explore the nuances of this kind of world. In both its world building AND in its character relationships. And I think one of the reasons Invincible manages to feel so fresh despite being so clearly inspired by other works is because it’s willing to really explore those gray areas. It’s not a show where everything or everyone is clearly good or clearly bad, good characters do bad things, bad characters do good things, and everyone has to reckon with the decisions they make, regardless of their intentions or motivations. This is brilliantly illustrated in the majority of the characters in the series, but I think there’s no better illustration than in the dueling, inverted arcs of the title character Invincible, and his father, Omni-Man.

Just want to say Debbie is a MVP. Her actions raised Mark in the right direction and her humanity eventually rubbed off on Nolan by getting him to feel basic human emotions and regret the things he's said and done. Genuinely love her
Gonna make an entire video about her!
Yesssssss do it @@Johnny2Cellos
@@Johnny2Cellos Yessssssss do it. She deserves all the love
Best civilian character in the series by far, not even just for how her actions shaped Mark & Nolan to ultimately become a good people but also her love for Oliver despite his conception being everything she hates.
Who would win? Presumed thousands of years of fascist programming and brainwashing, or one (1) human woman with basic compassion and empathy. The answer is more likely than you'd think!
I don't see anyone talk about it, but the 'think Mark think' speech feels like Nolan talking to himself more than anything.
I think his whole massacre (along with beating/lecturing Mark) was Nolan trying to convince himself
it literally is lmao
when mark says "you dad" nolan had no more arguments... he could always have another son, but no one would be like that one specific.

Mark's character only gets better in the upcoming stories. He will truly live up to being called Invincible. Let's hope Amazon renews it enough to finish the story.
Yeah I personally can't wait for the "Get Smart" volume to be adapted.
They recently renewed Invincible for season 4 and 5. Just three more seasons, and I'm confident this show become even more popular which each successive season.

I love how Debbie is the reason the main universe is so unique because shes the one who raised mark
the scene with angstrom hed me genuinely tweaking. the creators did a really good job of quickly turning what is essentialy a blank slate character into someone very hateable very fast.
ong man, watching him snap debbie’s wrist made me want mark to kill him in the gruesome way he did actually kill him
Really? I was bored outta my mind. I was thinking hurry it up already.
@@ShmadenShmuki.yeah I really struggled to care about angstrom. I cared about what he did to other characters ofc, but him as a standalone? yawn from me
I feel like Angstram is a very gray character. Same with all the Marks. There is no evil Mark or good Nolan, they all are just people who see things from their lense that make sense.
They are definitely evil their just way more casual with their excuses , yes I understand that up bringing is a big factor but when you reach the point of crushing kids heads with the same attitude of handing out samples I’m pretty sure that might be a bit outside the gray area
So much about Nolan’s arc is basically a litmus test on the audience’s capacity for forgiveness and understanding.
forgiveness is cringe

We see in the alternate realities that Viltrumite rule isn’t benevolent either, in every world where Mark sides with Nolan the world suffers horribly, thereby showing that Nolan’s Viltrumite indoctrination is all bullshit.
Well yeah, i figured Nolan lied about it being beneficial for humans. It was always about enslavement
@@nickdavis5516 no its not its just because they always fight back
My theory for Viltrumites connecting with humans- and learning from them- is that when Nolan said that he saw humanity as “animals” and Debbie as a “pet”, he meant it far more literally than simply “they are beneath me”. Animals that we have domesticated tend to clearly exhibit near-human traits- happiness, sadness, surprise, loneliness, love, empathy, etc. And many “pet” animals- dogs and cats- have slowly evolved more human-like facial traits, like larger eyes and less pronounced teeth. What I’m saying with all this is that Nolan went to Earth, saw a lot of things that looked a lot like him, and did the natural social thing of adapting the common practices to fit in. And that stuck with him.
Hard disagree. He only said she was like a pet because he was trying to minimize how important she was to him. He loved her. She was the mother of his child, he's spent the last 20 years with her, which while not a long time comparably, it's still a vast amount of time. But he didn't want to love her, so stating she was like a pet was his way of affirming to himself that she isn't his equal, but below him. She absolutely was not like a pet and he merely only said that to try and convince himself that's all it was.
@@dadecalder7796 kind of. he mainly called Debbie a pet because of their lifespans. Her lifespan is like a pet. So however nuch he loves her, he knows it wont last
@@dadecalder7796 He related to her, but he couldn't bring himself to put himself on the same level as her. So he compartmentalizes his feelings despite never having treated her like a pet.
My personal read is that it's supposed to be a flawed metaphor for all of the reasons above. He calls her a pet because doing so minimized the pain from both having to conquer her and outlive her, and he probably chose it because, for Nolan, that extra two way level of that connection could easily be written off in his mind as the way he would love a pet, even though deed down he knows it isn't
Anissa legitimately scared me when she showed up in this season. Even if I didn't know what she would do to Mark in the series the way she grabbed Amber and forced Mark to talk to her in the sky genuinely got me to brace myself. She just came out of nowhere!
Whilst I wasn't particularly pleased with how they handled Thula on Thraxa, they hit the ground running with Anissa so far.
@@kingdomcomesuperman3669It does make me wonder how people will react to that infamous scene in the comics...
@kingdomcomesuperman3669 thula didn't lose. she just was weaker than most. and she clearly regained the upper hand afterwards.
she almost killed him in fact.
@@irisdaniels2318 Mark had Thula by her throat in which she only got the upper hand out of that scenario when he hesitated. Comparing how she fought against him when he went all out compared to Lucan it was night and day, whereas in the comics its closer.
I see the first 2 seasons as a kind of "Nature vs nuture" Nolan was raised for hundreds of years to be a merciless killer, but a part of him wanted to find a way to defeat viltrumites to the point he went around looking for all their weaknesses, and wrote them down in a book for anyone to find and read, and around 20 years around people who want to do good was enough to reshape his whole worldview. Meanwhile Mark was raised by incredibly kind and caring people, but in most universes, he's outright evil
So cool how we finally got an explanation for why the show is called Invincible even though he appears opaque - it's in reference to his wings he uses to fly!
Mark doesnt have wings
@@AFed69 no there invincible!
You win dumbest joke
If anyones missing the joke, it's a reference to the dinosaur dimension where they think Mark is using invisible wings
From Bojack to Invincible is like sad depression to brutal depression.
Sad depression to brutal hope
@@BonnieBoestar That's really good!
Something worth adding onto this point? Mark isn't just battling with the internal struggle of not being like his dad (his Viltrumite side), but also being a worse version of himself, hence Season 2's Angstrom Levy, a mirror of Mark's sins across multiple realities. Mark doesn't need to just be stronger to contend with the Viltrum Empire, he also needs to fight against his very own human inclinations that could lean toward evil.
Our Mark isn't just one of the few good Invincibles, he also needs to be the best one if he's going to stop himself, which is a literal plot in the comics: The Invincible War. If anything? It's not typical for a Viltrumite to lose their composure, they're rather disciplined and controlled for all intents and purposes. No, letting rage, anger, and fear overwhelm yourself is a very human thing, something that Mark is starting to recognize he needs to work on.
Invincible's storytelling is such a masterclass, only thing they could improve is the animation and we'd have a masterpiece on our hands!
One of my favorite Nolan scenes is actually at the end of the Atom Eve special.
When Mark getting his powers is potentially called into question, after Debbie walks away, Nolan briefly considers ending it and just restarting. Then he hesitates. Then he stops. Then he hangs his head in shame and covers his face, disgusted with himself for even considering it. Mark is shown very young in that scene. It goes to show that, despite Nolan being on Earth for an EXTREMELY short time (to Viltrumite standards), Earth was rubbing off on him. He knew that deep down, he truly does care for Mark. He truly does care for Debbie.
To be honest, I think he was fearful of Viltrum. He thought he was the only Viltrumite to ever turn against their ideology. Who knows what Viltrum would've done to Debbie and Mark? So he forces himself disconnect from Earth. He calls Debbie a pet as a way to disconnect himself from her. He mindlessly slaughters thousands of people during his fight with Mark. He did everything he could to convince himself that he was better than them and that Earth was beneath him.
"What will you have after 500 years?"
But he's convinced by the one person who will permanently tether Nolan to Earth.
"You Dad. I'd still have you."
I love how original i always thought of the name invincible as ironic because he gets beat up so much but then I realized it’s not his physical self that’s invincible, it’s his spirit
The line delivery of "I think... I miss my wife" hit so damn hard the first time and still does. The genuine realization and regret for his behavior is insanely well done.
No ones talking about how Mark’s first suit makes him look like Generator Rex💀
Omniman is "alone", as Viltrumite he only has The Empire. Relationships for him are a "blink" so there is no attachment. When he asks Mark "What will you have after 500 years?" and Mark says "You dad", Nolan understands he is not "alone" anymore, he has someone to share life with for 1000s of years. Suddenly he can "have" what Debbie told him about humans. He does not *need* the empire anymore
I am glad to hear you’re an Invincible fan! It’s easily my favorite current animated series, and probably my favorite superhero story in general right next to stuff like One Punch Man. I read the comics and they really do have me hyped for the rest of the show.
Genuinely Mark has amazing character development throughout. He goes through a lot of phases and a lot of conflicts about what he really should be using his power for. There are highs and there are lows, but you can always see his good intentions shine through no matter what he gets put through. In general, the grey morality of the characters in the series really is the highlight of it. Reminds me of that quote from Fallout. “Everyone wants to save the world. They just disagree on how…”
Mark: I’m gonna live a normal life, going to college and be with Amber all while being a superhero on the side.
Anissa:Well yes, but actually no
Mark: alright well, at least I don’t kill
Langstom: Allow me to introduce myself
Mark: (shaky sigh) well… that was a one time thing and I will never kill again
Conquest: Hold my beer
Ssh we've only seen Conquest in a single panning panel, some of the people watching don't know who he is
On a real note, I can't wait for that to happen along with a certain war coming very soon(probably S3) I'm hyped
I'm really enjoying the character arcs/storylines in this show. Nothing in it feels faked for drama, and I enjoy it also flying in the face of common old school superhero tropes. It's the kind of thing Robert Kirkman is really good at. I think this show being a much more faithful adaptation of the comics than TWD's TV show helps demonstrate that.
As someone who read the serie its great to see a show accurately adapt the comics so well, mainly keeping the same beats and just rearranging the events.
Comic was a great celebration of the superhero comic genre whilst fitting with the, at the time, 2000s morally grey storytelling which the show is doing great at so far.
Nolan shouldn't have looked down on the machine-head episode. He could have tried his hand against Battle Beast. Lol😂
Honestly I think Battle Beast would have that. Dude went toe to toe for like a week with Space Freddie Mercury
@@ethanbrown2019 BB would play with Nolan 😂

@namishjain9238 Facts, it's why I can't wait for the real power players to pop in and start pitting in some real work. If people think Omniman is this all-powerful being, they won't be able to handle some of the things that are coming real soon

It is exactly that, It's the grey area, the realism, the what ifs. And the bad people do good things and good people do bad things. humanizing heros away from their stigma. So thanks
That was a great invincible analysis video , J2C.
I never considered the fact that Mark and Nolan adopt more of their opposing ideologies where Mark is living more like Nolan and Nolan gains more of Mark’s mindset.
The show is overall really good with the focus of other characters like Rex, robot and Eve, so I can’t say the focus on Mark and Nolan carries the show, it is the most engaging part of the show, which makes sense since they are main characters but I still enjoy it the most.
It really does have so many great characters, the Eve special is one of my favs

Man I love this show and comic. It’s my favorite comic ever and the show just improves on it in every way. Loved the video!
One of my favorite things in the show as well was seeing at the beginning of Season 2 where Mark insists to Cecil that he isn't his father and Cecil being wary of that and not believing him to at the end, Mark thinking he is his father and Cecil knowing now that Mark is not his father and being a kind of anchor for him to remind him that. The one character he was trying to prove himself to was the now the character, helping him realize how much he was right.
This video was absolute banger Johnny.

Mark's rage and anger issues is well fleshed out and pretty understandable or believable. I feel like it's one of the best uses of such a mental complex being a plot device. Indeed a masterclass in the character arc.
I never noticed, but they even have the same black eye, when they make their discoveries about themselves. Fine visual storytelling in that department!

its a story that teaches hope and dedication to become better even in the worst of times and to not give up to false solutions and easy escapes and i love it for that.
Debbie and Nolan COULD Reconcile IMO if he is able to explain his perspective adequately. Imagine your entire life your beliefs have been reinforced over and over again, and then when you're going to exert those beliefs like you have a thousand times before, Some random person you only knew for a few weeks has somehow made such an impact on you that you emotionally, not rationally, but subconsciously realize that YOU WERE ALWAYS WRONG. Not only were you wrong, YOU WERE A MONSTER. You realize that for better or worse, that person helped you see the lie that YOUR ENTIRE LIFE has been built around. Who are you without them? Though you've only known them for a tiny fraction of your life, they are INTEGRAL to who you are now. Who WOULDN'T want to go back to that?

J2C talking Invincible? Hell yeah.
This is the perspective that i had too after watching the show, unlike other youtubers who are saying that Mark is turning into father, but it's actually not that way, it's just his insecurity that he's turning into his father, he is fundamentally human and always fight only when it is necessary.
can't wait for season 3, dodged this show for too long and just recently finished it

Reginald Veljohnson is an absolute GOAT and I love that they got him on board for the show
I’d have said it was my favourite animated show of the moment, but I happened to watch Blue Eyed Samurai a little before I started watching season 2, so I’m only just getting it because I bounced off hard after that glory.
One thing we should realize is this “indoctrination” term being thrown around. If you think about it, Mark is just as indoctrinated by Earth as Nolan is indoctrinated by Viltrum.
I absolutely love everything about Nolan’s arc so far, but in all honesty, my first reaction to that last line was more along the lines of “this bitch!”
my favorite thing about the comics is how Nolan becomes more human while mark becomes more like a viltrumite
If you look at this in another angle, disregarding the fictional elements of powers and empires, this is not so different than a story of a child and a parent learning to become better people. Traditional story elements applied to a setting more appropriate for this age, it's fucking beautiful, and makes me bawl my eyes out everytime nolan starts to feel more human.
what about the human rage boost or whatever ive heard about that appearently amplifies the viltrumite power
I do love the inverse stuff they’re doing with Mark and his dad but I’m also worried about Mark😣
the greater good helps us all as individuals too in the long run...
take back your identity as a group...
no matter what that group is... your people are important to you as mine are to me...
and if your people are oppressing other people just stop doing that and peacefully separate...
nobody needs to get hurt since we can reason with one another
The "I think...I miss my wife" from Nolan really gives off the same kind of vibes as dracula learning how to be human in Netflix's castlevania
Another great evil turned somewhat good
As much as I hate multiverse shenanigans, I thought Angstrom Levy was pretty neat when we finally got to the end of the season. The way his existence serves to show the ways Mark is not his father, even in his most brutal moments.
Just wait. I'm not spoiling anything but the story gets soon intense. And it's just starting
So family turns them into each other
Finally, someone who gets the Zod homage
Side note is that Mark also occasionally says "he" while he rambles about strength
Thinking that he COULD let go of his control because Mark thought Ansty Boy could handle it
Like how Nolan only fought things that COULD fight back
The End Of The Fucking World on Netflix is kinda the same with inverter character arcs, except Teotfw is much less violent and superhero like, but I still highly recommend
I see omniman as what if Zod developed humanity rather than what if Clark lost it
