Nikon D850 Low Light Photography | Brisbane City Laser Show

- Decided to do some Nikon D850 low light photography capturing a laser light show in my home city of Brisbane, Australia. I haven't used my Nikon 14-24mm F2.8G lens in a while, so decided to pair it up with the D850 to see what I'd get. I also bought along my Nikon 50mm F1.8G lens in case I needed a bit of extra reach (which I did). This laser light show is part of the Brisbane Festival which celebrates the season of Spring every year. I had a lot of fun on this night, I used the D850 and my GoPro Hero 7 Black for some time lapses as well.

The laser show ran from 7-9pm, so I only had 2 hours to get all the filming and photography done 😅 Feel free to share this video with anyone who may have missed the show as it finished 26th September 🙏

What a fun video Adrian! Excellent production quality and loved the choice of music as well. I think my favorite image is probably around the 2:45 mark. I'm a huge sucker for nighttime images though and you captured them beautifully. It might be one of those that lends itself more to video but the images were very cool as well.
I didn't realize you had been holding on to that 14-24 F2.8? I'm just about to make some pretty dramatic shifts in my equipment (waiting on everything to come in to make the trade) so I'm looking forward to seeing the differences in image quality. Hope you are having an excellent weekend!
Thanks heaps Rob for watching. This was such a fun night. It wasn't too crowded where I was luckily. The 14-24mm still is an awesome lens, just weighs a bit though. I mainly use it for astro or aurora shots, but I last used it for a portrait shoot would you believe. Be interested to see the new gear you get and the results on the images. Wow! Great stuff here. I enjoyed the whole thing but my favorites came from Kangaroo Point with the nifty 50. The pano stitched nicely and looks great! Brisbane looks like it might be a great place to practice street photography too! Thanks, Adrian!

Hi Adrian! What a beautiful skyline you have there. Wow, the shots with the 50mm were spectacular! I thought I was going to like the video better as well, but was amazed by the 50mm stills. Thanks for watching Paul. Yeah Brisbane really is amazing. Kind of the same temp year round as Florida. I remember flying out of Orlando to LA after a tornado had just hit. One hell of a bumpy ride haha! Sydney is beautiful too around near the Opera House and Bridge. Was fun to sit back and watch the laser show after the photography. Loved the style of editing and sort of “techno” vibe you went with for the video, works perfectly! Great shots mate, I reckon kangaroo point cliffs made for some great images. 👌🏽 😊
Cheers Rauri thanks for watching mate. The city looked amazing that night. I liked the fact there was some heavy cloud too. Kangaroo Point was a nice angle, but I didn't go for that one angle that a thousand other photographers always go for where you can't see the Story Bridge. That's how I was able to get that pano with all the city seeing from the Story Bridge to Southbank. Have a great weekend mate, cheers 👍🙏📸
Thanks again for a great video. I am curious when shooting with your 14-24 the photos you showed you didn’t adjust for the curvature of the buildings. Is that a personal preference, should it be adjusted out, I’m not sure which is best?
Thanks Jeff, appreciate you watching. To be honest I was running short on time to get this video done, so I didn't go too much into the post production of the photos instead more editing the video. Hope you have a great week ahead, cheers 👍🙏📸
Fantastic photos! I'd be worried about one of those lasers poking someone's eye though. I'm going to finally upgrade to FX and decided to go with either the D850 or D780, but from what I've seen the D780 has better technology and focuses very well in low light and you have the option to take much longer photos. I also prefer the ability to quickly use a preset setting with the flick of the dial. I like the D850 for the lit buttons and better resolution, but beyond those two things I don't know of any other advantages. How well was your D850 for low light focus (much less light than you have here)?
Thanks for watching. The D850 focus in low light is pretty good. The D780 has better autofocus for video and has basically the same sensor as the D750 (both are good for low light photos). Z6II would certainly be worth a look though. I think it's better than the D780.
